I would suggest first reading all about buying your first guitar...Read and research as much as you can....I am assuming, after reading about Electric guitars, Acoustic Guitars and Semi Acoustic guitars, you have chosen Electric. Dont read anything beyond this if you havent heard all three of the properly (with all they have to offer)
read all about single coil and humbuck pickups(http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/archive/index.php?t-88517.html) , manufactures, design, neck, wood type..spend 3,4 days just reading and researching..until you get a clear picture of what you want, do not waste your money.

Watch youtube videos (there are too many to count)..Just do your research before buying, so you know EXACTLY what to look for and what you need.

Go to Justinguitar.com and read his beginners manual

understand all of this, then go to saddar (not as expensive as khadda market or other shops)..and find an appropriate guitar..in range of 10K -15K......

You can use guitar with
Amp
OR hook it up to PC (and use amplitube, etc software)

A must read :Pros and Cons of Real Amps VS. Software Amps

A PC option is going to cost you waaaaay less (due to all effects, equipments, etc) simulated on software..no need to buy hardware

.I live in Germany, so I can tell you about online sites from here...like thomann.de or http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/EUR/G...RRE-GITEGSTRAT...trusted sites with international shipping
Bad Mofo or Ranger Taffles might be able to help you aswell

I don't know about website, but if you're in Karachi, check out V-Sel Music. It's in Khadda Market someplace. They've got a nice bunch of beginners packages, which have an electric guitar, an amp, a tuner et al.

You do need an amp if you want to play the electric guitar. Like I've said before, the amplifier is half of the instrument in an electric guitar.

25k seems okay, I guess. I mean, it should be around $200 abroad, but this is Pakistan. I personally hate Ibanez guitars, but that's just personal and shouldn't be something you should worry about right now!

read this :
The Difference Between Single Coils and Humbuckers.

General knowledge.

Pickups are essentially magnets. Your strings are made of magnetic metals; usually electric guitar strings have a steel core wrapped in nickel, or are just plain steel. Your pickup creates a magnetic field that when the strings move, disturb. This disturbance is transferred to an electrical signal by your pickup, effected by all your guitar's electronics and eventually reaches your amp and is turned into vibrations which you hear as your guitar.

Pickups get their magnetism from either a magnet attached to their base, or from magnetic pole pieces. Pole pieces are the metal cylinders that come out of the pickup under each string. The pole pieces are wrapped in magnetic wire (usually copper), which increases the strength of the magnetic field. One set of pole pieces wrapped in copper wire is called a coil of a pickup.

There are 3 main types of magnets used in passive pickups; Alnico II (2), Alnico V (5), and Ceramic.

Alnico II is the lowest output and the smoothest/warmest/bassiest of the 3 main magnet types. Alnico V is higher output than Alnico II and has more trebly/midrange bite than Alnico II. Ceramic is the highest output of all and the most trebly/biting. In general, Either Alnico II or Alnico V can sound good distorted or clean, but ceramic pickups generally produce a tone that isn't as pleasing clean, but somewhat preferred for heavy distortion.

Depending on the type of wire used to wind the pickup, it's thickness, how it was prepared and how old it is, the wire can affect the pickup's overall sound greatly. Companies generally do not list information about what wire type they use in order to keep their pickup formula somewhat guarded. In general, the more wire that is used will give you a greater output and a bassier tone.

As you may have noticed, if you pick closer to the bridge of your guitar, the sound you get will be quieter and more trebly than it would be if you picked closer to the neck. When pickups were first made, they didn't account for this and your bridge pickup would sound very quiet and trebly, while your neck pickup would sound very loud and bassy. Eventually, people began to realize that if you over-wound the bridge pickup, so that it became hotter and more bassy, and under-wound the neck pickup, so that it became quieter and more trebly, that you could create a greater balance between the pickups. In general, bridge pickups will still sound more trebly than neck pickups, but not in all cases.

So, now that you have some general knowledge, we can move on to the pickup divisions.

There are 2 main different pickup constructions, single coil and humbucker (2 coils). Single coils and humbuckers come in all different sizes and shapes.

Here are some various single coil pickups.

http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/images/STL-1.jpg
http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/images/sld-1.jpg
http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/images/ssl-2.jpg

Here are some various humbuckers.

http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/images/APH-1.jpg

Hopefully you know, visually, the difference between humbuckers and single coils now.

The first pickups created were single coils. Along with picking up signals from your strings, which they were supposed to, they also picked up stray radio frequencies (RF) which you would hear through your amp as an annoying buzzing sound. The orientation of this RF signal is related to which way the wire is wound around your pickup. Meaning that if you wind the pickup clockwise, the RF signal will travel in a different way then it would if you wound the pickup counter-clockwise. If you have 2 signals being used at once, where the RF signal is different in each, they will cancel each other out, or at least lessen their collective sound greatly.

This is why humbuckers were created.

Humbuckers are essentially 2 single coil pickups that share a large magnet at their base. Each coil of a humbucker is wrapped differently, so that the RF signals they create cancel each other out.

The only purpose in creating humbuckers was to "buck" the hum that single coils created.

However humbuckers did not, and do not, sound just like single coils without hum. Since a much larger magnet was used, and there were 2 coils of wire, the humbucker created a much louder signal.

There are many other differences between humbuckers and single coils. Some will say that humbuckers are only good for distortion and single coils only good for clean. This is only personal taste, and many people (There are too many people who use Gibson style guitars for clean to begin to list them) use guitars with humbuckers for playing clean. Also, guitarists such as Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Kirk Hammet (Metallica), both of Iron Maiden's guitarists and many others have used single coils for metal.

I could begin to describe the tonal differences of humbuckers and single coils to you, but it would be best if you went out and played alot of guitars and found them out for yourself. I could say single coils have more "quack" or "twang", but what you think of as quack may be different than what I think of, so it'd be best you come to your own conclusions.

These links have clips of many different pickups, use them to help you make decisions about pickups

The Difference Between Active and Passive Pickups

Pickups in general

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/skgs/sk/pickup_factors.htm
Go to that website for information about factors affecting how a pickup sounds.

Potentiometers are the technical names for your controls. The lower their value, the more high end they cut off. So a 500k pot will sound more trebly than a 250k pot, and a 100k pot will sound more trebly than a 25k pot.

Passive Pickups

Passive pickups were the first kind of pickups. They generate a signal which is powerful enough to drive an amp and loud enough to be used without any pre-amplification. They have many more winds of wire than active pickups and much stronger magnets. They are more prone (but won?t necessarily have) to having microphonic feedback. Microphonic feedback in your pickup is when there is too much vibration in the coils of your pickup and you get that annoying squealing sound, though some like it. Since passive pickups have more wire, there?s more of a chance of there being an error somewhere and something being microphonic. Also the stronger magnetic field increases chances of being microphonic as well. Passive pickups generally use potentiometer values of above 250, and sometimes don?t have potentiometers.

Active Pickups

Active pickups on their own are much weaker than passive pickups. They have a much weaker magnet and much fewer coil windings, which means their signal is very trebly and very low output on their own. They have built in pre-amps (which is what the battery is for), which brings their output level to one similar to, and in many cases greater than those of passive pickups. They use much lower value potentiometers because the signal is so trebly and a lot of the high end needs to be cut off to be usable. Active Pickups use pot values usually below 250k; anything too great will give a signal that is far too trebly and basically useless.

Each has their pros and cons. The main argument for passive pickups is that they sound more genuine and that you don?t have to change all your electronics to change between passive pickups, since most guitars use passive pickups to begin with. The main argument for active pickups is that they don?t have feedback, sound more hi-fi and the tone isn?t altered much with the volume controls. The main argument against passive pickups is that they?re microphonic and pull too hard on the strings, reducing sustain. The main argument against active pickups is that they sound sterile.

Neither is by default better than the other, and plenty of artists in most any genre will use either type, though passive is more common

Karachi, Pakistan
here you go
http://www.karachisnob.com/musical_instruments_stores_karachi.html

copied from some blog
Sohail Music Palace – Bought my first Pakistani made guitar from there for around Rs. 2000. Was a pathetic piece of junk but I loved it. This shop is located in Saddar near Chullu Subhani Kabab House. Exact location is hard to define but its near Lucky Star. The shop is a little dingy from the outside but they keep lots of instruments there. I also purchased a Flute from there and a Harmonica. The good thing about this place is that they’ll give you the best prices in all of Karachi. The rest are all “Al Haaj Lootu Khan” as I like to call them.V-Sel Music – Probably one of the most fashionable locations for musical instruments located in Khaada Market Defence. I have been to this shop many times to get the strings changed for my guitar and on most occasions I have seen some local rock stars. The owner (or manager) himself plays for some band. The popular guitarist from Karavan (Asad) is there most of the times. Anyways the good thing about this shop is that they keep alot genuine instruments however the prices are really high. If you can pay for it, then rest assured that you’ll get a good quality instrument.
Pakistan Electronics Saddar – Located right in the heart of mobile market at abduallah haroon road, this shop has been there for quite a while. They are located on the first floor which you have to reach via a paan-ke-peekh laden miniscule stairway. The shop is actually divided into two portions, one where they display and the other where they store. The display looks quite old and when I went there to buy my second guitar (a Tansen Semi-Acoustic for Rs.8000), the place was decked with dust. Nevertheless the prices of instruments here are satisactory and well worth a visit for market research.
Pakistan Electronics Defence – The defence version of Pakistan Electronics is located opposite Jimmy Studios at Khadda Market again on the first floor of the building. This place has been there for ever as I can recall and its pretty decent place. They are fully stocked with various instruments and its a nice place to look around although the prices at this branch are higher than the Saddar’s branch. The good thing about this shop is that the manager there teaches musical instruments as well (Guitar and Keyboard as i recall).
A shop at Tariq Road near Lavish Mall – A few months ago I discovered this place whose name I cannot recall. According to the manager, their shop is one of the oldest in Karachi. The manager seemed to have quite a bit of knowledge about the instruments (or maybe he was just a good salesman) and liked to talk alot. Anyways he almost convinced me to purchase an old American Guitar, a popular brand which I forgot. Incidently he also told me that a few years ago they imported Tansen guitars (same as mine) for about Rs. 5000 meaning i got ripped off when Ibouhgt my Tansen. Anyways this shop had alot of guitar….I mean alot. They were hanging from the ceiling, piled on the floor and everywhere. So this is one location you should definetly look into if you want to purchase a guitar. They also keep other instruments and accessories.
A shop in Gulshan – I have seen a shop while passing the gulshan area but never stopped to take a peak inside.
A shop at Burns Road – I have heard alot about this mystery shop at BurnsRoad which i could never find myself. Rumor has it that this shop’s owner supplies instruments to most musical instruments in Karachi. But its only a rumor.
A shop behind Zainub Market – A shop used to be located near the Levi’s Factory Outlet but this closed down pretty soon and I know why. They were the ultimate Lootairaas.
An area in Saddar – There is an area in Saddar near Regal Market where you can get second hand musical accessories. Have heard that they keep real nifty Amps there, though never bought anything from there.
Beatles Center – Its a shop located near Jheel Park in the Bahadurabad area.
Hard Rock – This shop located in defence phase 5 gizri area is one of the oldest shops in the area and considers itself a very popular spot for aspiring muscians.
Guitar Lab – This shop is located in again in defence phase 5 but in the Tauheed Commercial zone on the 25th street.
I have collected this information from personal experience over the years. If anybody knows anyother shops, then please do let me know and I’ll review them as well. Hope this information was useful for the future musicians of Pakistan!

Well..... yes and no.

If you want metal, then yes, you need something with humbuckers. Firstly, they make less noise when distorted heavily. Secondly, there's something called "palm mutting" that's easier to do on a humbucker. You know, that chugga chugga rhythm sound in metal songs? That's palm mutting.

And no as in both kinds of pickups really sound different. High end single coils these days make little to no noise, but you still can't distort them hard enough. But still, nothing beats the clean sound of a single coil. Humbuckers are "metal", and they get the job done for all other genres. But single coils have more 'soul' for lack of a better word.

But screw that. Get the Ibanez. For high gain sounds you really can't go wrong with a Line6. Like I've said before, the amplifier is half of the electric guitar anyway, so get a nice one.

If condition is great and usage was low, then go for it.
I would suggest showing it to a friend who has been playing guitars for a decent number of years
Sadly noone of my friends plays a musical Instrument :( Ill pm you the link . the strings look weird cause they are green for some reason lol . Although I often get interested in some things and often buy them and then use for for 1-2 months and then let them rust . Im thinking of not spending any real money atm and buy some Chinese electric guitar and amp for now and see if im still interested in learning how to play one . Do you think I should do this ?
What was your first guitar? :D
