I have been away from the gaming scene too long. Now starting back to built the pc to get back. I have put together the following machine

Ci5 2310
8gb
Asus P-55 GA 550 watt supply

And now looking for the final piece of the puzzle i.e graphics cards.
The resolution I will be gaming for now is 1080.

I have narrowed down my search to 770 or 960 as I am getting both for the same price.

I have seen the reviews and benchmarks and 770 is bit better then 960 but requires more power and probably produces more heat.

Also 960 is 128 bit. Would that create any problems in case I start to move to 1440 resolution later? Etc etc and finally what would be a better investment?

Ok. Any point going for 4 gb variant considering the 128bit interface?
your pc specs show u have "Monitor: 15.6 inch (1366x768)", if this is true then 2 gb is more than enough
if u got a 1080p monitor then 2 gb would be enough for most games, if u afford 4 gb version then get it, otherwise reduce some graphic settings in those games which utilize 2gb+ vram at ultra settings

Those specs are to be updated, i will currently game on 1080 with possible plans for 1440

for 1080p, 960 4GB is recommended from above. On 2GB version you will compromise few Settings Bcoz it is not sufficient for Ultra gameplay. Modern Games consumes a lot of VRAM.

for 1440p, 960 would not handle the High Graphics Gameplay. Atleast 280x/970/290/390 would do fine.

Under the Mercy of the Creator
770 and 960 are incomparable.
770 is one tier above in performance
960 is however also and efficient GPU in 4GB

Spoiler: show
needless to say 280x/380 beats them both in price per performance ratio

Amd drivers are plagued with issues
280x struggle with software in very few NVIDIA based titles like Dying Light. there are only few NVIDIA titles Batman and dying light. Overall 280X best bet at 22K range. sometimes it closed to 780 in performance. Software issues mostly with newer AMd cards.

P.S At start AMD always struggles to reach to its equivalent NVIDIA GPU but after sometimes Same AMD beats NVIDIA equivalents easily.

So i have been looking at reviews and saw that 970 gives around 50% more performance compared to 960, so i am increasing the budget to go for it.
Would there be any bottleneck on gpu considering i am using second gen i5?

i dont think so. 4 core/ 8 threads are sufficient for most Games. no Game consumes more than 4 cores.

970 great choice for Short run. due to shortened 3.5GB Vram. in comparison i'd say better opt for 390 8GB Card. in future and long Run you will see the difference also DX12 a noticeable factor between AMD and NVIDIA.

Point is, In almost same price you will have card worth more than NVIDIA right now. you might see in future Game developers inclined toward higher Memory usage from start.

from reviews it looks as one is ahead in one game and other in next game

YES they are close to each other. 290/390/970 are competitors. the only difference is Vram and software support. games with higher memory usage perform much better with 390 and Dx12 is the future of Gaming industry so decide likewise.

If in near future you go with 1440p. For another 2 year 390 is better choice. for 1080p and short run (6 months) 970's fine.
