[h=1]Rumor Patrol: The Flash Movie Casting Characters & Villains Revealed[/h]

Despite underwhelming reviews and downright vitriolic online debate, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has pushed forward – bringing in over $830 million at the global box office. At this point, it’s near-impossible for the film to cross the $1 billion mark (barring a theatrical release of the R-Rated Ultimate Cut) but with home video sales and an entire slate of films scheduled through 2020, DC fans shouldn’t worry too much about whether Dawn of Justice will throw a major wrench in the DCEU. Judging the success of DC (on its second shared universe film) relative to Marvel Studios (which now has over twelve entries in the MCU) was never going to be a truly accurate comparison (even though Iron Man 2 only pulled in $639 million worldwide and was also criticized for favoring shared universe setup over quality storytelling).

As a result, while Batman V Superman may have been a disappointment to some, it set the stage for DC’s shared Justice League universe – even if Dawn of Justice sometimes suffered in the process. However, with Suicide Squad wrapping up, Wonder Woman actively shooting, and Justice League Part One now in production, fans will soon have a much wider sample through which to judge the longterm viability of the DCEU – especially since Warner Bros. doesn’t appear to be slowing down on their shared universe plan any time soon. Today, we’re getting early reports on what roles the studio is using to cast for the first post-Justice League Part One DCEU entry, Ezra Miller’s Flash movie – including a couple parts with interesting implications, should the rumor reflect actual plans for The Flash.

The casting report comes from industry scooper Umberto Gonzalez at Heroic Hollywood – who, as anyone following comic book movie news knows, has a mixed but still notable track record when it comes to superhero movie scoops. According to Gonzalez, Warner Bros. is currently using five roles to cast lead parts in The Flash solo film – though the report suggests the studio could simply be using these roles to cast for “type” not necessarily a character that is confirmed for the film.
Check out the roles and a few minor details below:

  • Iris West is described in the breakdown as having Christiane Amanpour’s brains and Carrie Bradshaw’s style. An overcaffinated doe. A reporter at The Central City Citizen. Actresses are currently testing for this part.
  • Eobard Thawne is described in the breakdown as Central City’s Bill Gates. The smartest man in the room and he suffers from advanced degenerative disease like Stephen Hawking. Thawne is confined to a chair.
  • Fred Chyre is described in the breakdown as a gruff detective who first meets Barry at the scene of a crime. Now they’re colleagues and the closest thing Barry has to a friend. Chryre is investigating the unusual death of someone at Thawne Laboratories
  • Len Snart is described in the breakdown as being ex-military and turns out to be working for Thawne. Have a feeling he is the muscle the way Anatoli Knyazev (aka the KGBEAST) was the muscle for Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
  • Jay Garrick is described in the breakdown as being a former Central University professor who was fired for fringe science, and was working on the speed force program. Supposedly his role is just a cameo.
Gonzalez is traditionally known for his insight into Marvel Studios projects but also dug up several accurate pieces of Batman V Superman news – so, he’s not completely outside of his expertise here. That’s all to say: elements of this report could turn out to be true and offer early insight into what fans might see in The Flash movie but, for the time being, it’s worth taking all of this with a grain of salt – especially since Gonzalez himself indicates the names might be used to thin the casting field (by testing for a certain quality of performance without actually revealing an actual film role).

The names on the list shouldn’t be much of a surprise – given that each one is a known associate or antagonist of Barry Allen’s Flash at some point in DC history (both recent and past); still, there’s no question that, with four out of five of these roles already present on CW’s Flash TV series with well-liked actors in each part, a Flash movie with so many of the same characters in place would be a gamble for Warner Bros. This isn’t to say the information is inaccurate but fans will likely hope that The Flash movie is prepared to do more than re-adapt storylines that worked on the TV show as a big screen feature in the DCEU – even if that big screen version was slightly more “grounded” and “gritty.” After all, what’s the point of a multiverse if Warner Bros. utilizes most of the same characters?
Still, the breakdown also makes sense within the larger DCEU strategy of introducing characters that may play a smaller role in the present film for potential payoff down the line. As a result, supporting parts and/or cameos for Len Snart (aka Captain Cold) and Jay Garrick (aka The Flash), especially, might sound strange at this stage (because: why test for a cameo so early?) but could actually be an indicator that, like Batman V Superman before it, The Flash may also feature fleeting looks at storylines, heroes, and villains that will payoff later-on in the shared universe. While The Flash was only a brief cameo in Batman V Superman, having Ezra Miller in place for the part, years before he’d shoot Justice League, produced more excitement and connective tissue than a faceless costumed red streak would have – so the studio may be taking the same approach with Garrick, especially.

That all said, while the casting report certainly hints that Eobard Thawne could be the main baddie in the film, there’s always the possibility that Thawne and Captain Cold (as his henchman) won’t be the only threats Barry will face – and could easily “create” monstrous threats for Barry to face – as few actually believed that Warner Bros. would introduce Doomsday in Batman V Superman years before the character was confirmed in marketing.
As stated, for now, the report is little more than hearsay – and casting is still in the early stages. The script and main parts are likely very much in flux – assuming that these names are even part of the current plan. We’ll be sure to provide updates as official details are announced.

[h=1]The Flash Movie Loses Director Seth Grahame-Smith[/h]

As the DC Extended Universe continues to expand on screen with this summer’s Suicide Squad, future projects are in production and development leading up to the highly anticipated Justice League ensemble films. But, as Warner Bros. has made certain alterations following the DCEU launch with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, changes are in store for the studio’s big screen take on The Flash.
Alreadyset for release in March of 2018, Warner Bros. had previously announced a writer/director and star of The Flash film. However, though Ezra Miller debuted as Barry Allen in a cameo role during Batman V Superman, and will carry the role through the Justice League films, the future of the director’s chair is more uncertain.
THR is reporting that director Seth Grahame-Smith has left his position on the production, citing “creative differences” for his departure. While Grahame-Smith is still working on two other productions under the Warner Bros. umbrella, it seems as though plans for the film didn’t quite line up to the director’s vision.
Following Grahame-Smith’s exit, it’s possible the studio will move forward quickly in the search for his replacement on the film. While there aren’t any details on the specifics, and neither Warner Bros. nor DC has confirmed the news, it’s likely set in stone and fans can expect the project to move forward with a new director.

Grahame-Smith is fairly well-known for his work as an author, taking traditional stories and putting a comedic horror-inspired spin on them, leading his past work — which includes Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, as well as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter — straight to the big screen. While the up-and-comer might not be sticking around to occupy the director’s chair, the film will retain Grahame-Smith’s script, which was based on a treatment by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Speaking of Lord and Miller, Grahame-Smith’s other WB projects still moving forward include the LEGO Batman Movie as well as the other project in which he’s involved, Beetlejuice 2.
Grahame-Smith’s exit comes as no surprise in the developing DCEU, which saw the original director of Wonder Woman leave before Patty Jenkins stepped in. Elsewhere in superhero film franchises, while Ant-Man was in development, director Edgar Wright left the project over creative differences. Regardless, the film still went on to be fairly well-received under the hand of Peyton Reed, and the character will continue to appear throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In terms of The Flash’s future, Lord and Miller were originally looking at the film as a directing vehicle, and other directors may jump at the chance to join the DCEU. Needless to say, finding a replacement might not be a very long process, and no changes in the film’s schedule have been announced as of yet.

[h=1]The Flash Movie Writers Praise New Director Rick Famuyiwa[/h]

When Warner Bros. officially kicked off their DC Comics Extended Universe earlier this year with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the film was met by many fans and critics who weren’t pleased with the tone of the movie or the attitudes of their beloved superheroes. However, in the time since BVS caused an incredible stir among fans, Warner Bros. has shifted gears to the next release, Suicide Squad, and also recently lifted the embargo on information from Justice League set visits, both of which have helped fans get a better idea of the DCEU.
Enter The Flash (Ezra Miller), who, from descriptions of his time in Justice League, sounds like he lights up every scene he’s in. This shouldn’t be a surprise to fans of Barry Allen. Fans may have been concerned about the state of his upcoming solo film when Seth Grahame-Smith vacated the director’s chair over “creative differences” with Warner, but since then, Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) has taken on the project, and the film’s writers couldn’t be more pleased.
Chris Miller and Phil Lord (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) penned the story for The Flash film coming in 2018. They were recently interviewed by IGN, and seem to be genuinely excited about the way the project is shaping up, calling the hiring of Famuyiwa “the best.” Said Lord:

We worked with Rick and have been developing a pilot with him for a little while and are really big fans of his and Dope. I think he’s a rad choice.

Miller agreed. When the two were asked if they had an influence on the levity Flash was bringing to the universe, he noted, “They had that planned for him in the first place. That’s why they were talking to us in the first place because that’s how they wanted to go with that character.” Lord added, “That’s all Ezra.
He brings new energy,” Miller said, comparing Flash’s role to that of Spider-Man’s in Captain America: Civil War.
Batman has to be kind of bummed out because his parents died and Superman is already established as a serious person and Wonder Woman’s angry about stuff. Stuff’s happening. But then you’ve got a guy who’s like, ‘Eh, whatever, I run fast!’
Miller and Lord have a knack for turning every property they touch to gold, no matter how preposterous the premise. While Justice League‘s aim is to be respectful to the established worlds and heroes, it sounds like they’re simultaneously attempting to broaden the wavelength of tone across DC’s film lineup.
Considering how bleak BVS was, a bit of levity and camaraderie seems like they could offer a huge improvement to the franchise, perhaps even creating a crowd-pleaser on the level of The Avengers. Whether or not Justice League will be the film to do that remains to be seen, but many fans will be pleased to hear they’re moving in a positive direction.
Stay tuned to Screen Rant for further updates on The Flash and the DCEU lineup.
Suicide Squad will arrive on August 5, 2016, followed by Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 16, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.

[h=1]The Flash Movie: Iris West Casting Shortlist Includes Dope Star[/h]

Lately, we haven’t heard much detail about the DC Extended Universe’s The Flash, most likely because the next two films in the franchise (Suicide Squad and Justice League) are currently hogging the spotlight. We first met “movie Flash” (played by Ezra Miller) briefly in director Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice when he jumped through time to issue a warning to Batman (Ben Affleck). A video of The Flash in action at a convenience store was also discovered by Batman via Lex Luthor’s (Jesse Eisenberg) secret metahuman file folders in Batman V Superman.
We will soon be graced with The Scarlet Speedster’s presence once again in the upcoming Justice League movie, where he will be recruited by Batman (his mentor). If you have any doubts as to Ezra Miller’s ability to perform well, our own Justice League set visit suggested he’s got what it takes to become a breakout solo star.
In June of this year, The Flash movie recruited a new director after previous director Seth Grahame-Smith (screenwriter of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) dropped out due to creative differences. Enter Rick Famuyiwa (who has already been called “the best” by writers Chris Miller and Phil Lord) the screenwriter and director of such films as Dope, The Wood, and Brown Sugar. While we expect Famuyiwa to pen a fresh Flash script draft based on his own ideas, when will he begin casting?

Variety reports that Famuyiwa has, in fact, already gotten started on casting The Flash and is considering Kiersey Clemons for the female lead, having already worked with her on the critically-acclaimed indie film Dope. Since her breakout performance in that movie, Clemons has risen to stardom landing a role as a sorority sister in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and one of the leads in Sony’s remake of Flatliners starring Keifer Sutherland.

THR reports that other contenders for The Flash‘s female lead (who, yes, is Iris West) include singer Rita Ora and Lucy Boynton. British-born Ora best known for her voice does have some acting experience. She played the role of Mia (Christian Grey’s sister) in Fifty Shades of Grey and has appeared on a few British TV shows. Boynton, also a British actress, has much more experience than Ora and recently starred in the surprise indie hit Sing Street (2016) and just finished production on Rebel in the Rye, an upcoming J.D. Salinger biopic. These three potential leading ladies do have one thing in common – they are all lesser-known.
It’s safe to assume that the leading lady role is, as THR claims, Iris West, Barry Allen’s best friend, eventual lover, and badass news reporter at Central City’s Picture News. In the comics, West is also the proud aunt of Kid Flash a.k.a Wally West, and grandmother of the 4th Flash, Bart Allen. Iris’s current portrayal on The CW’s The Flash (played by Candice Patton) is a bit different from the comic books, and there is no way to tell what her role will be in The Flash movie as of yet.
As we have already seen with other castings in the comic-book film genre (Marvel for example), lesser-known actors end up getting a big boost in their career, often becoming megastars. Joining the DCEU as a major character isn’t just a one-time thing, especially considering how closely Iris sticks to Barry’s side throughout most of his life. If either of these three actresses are chosen, they better be in for the long haul and nail the on-screen chemistry with Ezra Miller.
Suicide Squad is scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman is slated for release on June 2, 2017; followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash is currently without a release date.

[h=1]The Flash Movie Casts Dope’s Kiersey Clemons as Iris West[/h]

The Flash movie director Rick Famuyiwa is now officially one of the filmmakers who is actively helping to build and expand the DC Extended Universe (which began with Man of Steel in 2013 and continued with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year). During Warner Bros. Pictures’ San Diego Comic-Con 2016 Hall H panel, Famuyiwa took the stage alongside his fellow DCEU directors (Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, David Ayer, James Wan, and Ben Affleck), shortly before a teaser trailer for Justice League was shown – providing a better look at the DCEU’s Barry Allen (played by Ezra Miller), at the same time.
Famuyiwa is currently in the process of not only researching The Flash movie (that is, reading up on Flash comic book stories), but also casting the film’s main players. Among the more important characters in the film will, of course, be Iris West and it’s now being reported that Famuyiwa has indeed found his Iris in the form of a tried and true collaborator.
Variety is reporting that Kiersey Clemons has closed a deal to costar in The Flash, with the site’s insiders saying it’s all but a given that Clemons is playing Iris West – “the tough-as-nails journalist and friend of Barry Allen,” as the site puts it. Clemons is also a friend of Famuyiwa, having previously starred in his acclaimed indie comedy/drama, Dope (see the picture above).
Barry Allen/The Flash (Ezra Miller) in Justice League

Currently, Famuyiwa is drawing from a Flash script draft that was penned by the project’s previously-attached director, Seth Grahame-Smith (writer of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), and based on a story treatment by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie). An unofficial casting report for the film previously described the Grahame-Smith script draft’s version of Iris West as follows:
Iris West is described in the breakdown as having Christiane Amanpour’s brains and Carrie Bradshaw’s style. An overcaffinated doe. A reporter at The Central City Citizen. Actresses are currently testing for this part.
Famuyiwa generally has a hand in crafting the scripts for his directorial efforts, so it’s a fair bet that he will likewise be re-tooling Grahame-Smith’s screenplay for The Flash. He will presumably be tweaking the role of Iris West too, so as to make the character an even better fit for Clemons and to better differentiate the film’s version of Iris from the Flash TV show version of the character (who is played by Candice Patton).

Suicide Squad
is scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman is slated for release on June 2, 2017; followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. [h=1]The Flash May Begin Filming January 2017 in London[/h]

The DC Extended Universe’s version of the Justice League – as assembled by Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman – will assemble under Man of Steel and Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder’s watch in 2017. Where the first team-up for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was preceded by multiple solo Avenger films, the DCEU is taking a different approach with the members of “the League”. Diana Prince’s backstory will be revealed during her solo movie in 2017, but the solo vehicles for Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen and Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry won’t start filming until after Justice League is done, next year (with the Ray Fisher-starring Cyborg not scheduled to arrive until 2020).
The Flash has Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) onboard as director, with Miller headlining and Dope costar Kiersey Clemons lined up to play Barry’s loyal ally, Iris West. Although the film recently lost its official March 2018 theatrical release, the fact that additional casting is actively underway for Famuyiwa’s DC superhero movie suggests it’s still moving forward to make a 2018 release date. And now, the latest update on The Flash has corroborated as much.

OLV is reporting that The Flash is gearing up to begin principal photography in London by January 2017 – further suggesting that a theatrical release the following year is in the cards for Famuyiwa’s movie. Justice League is now in the midst of production at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, so The Flash ought to be the next DCEU installment to film on that studio space after Snyder’s movie wraps up.
There’s an October 2018 release date staked out for an “untitled” DCEU installment that The Flash could ultimately wind up taking. There are other possibilities too; for example, if Aquaman director James Wan wants more time to refine the film’s script, The Flash could take the former’s July 2018 date and Aquaman can move to the October date, instead. Either way, we can probably expect an update on The Flash‘s release date situation in the foreseeable future (maybe even before the cameras start rolling on the movie).

On a related note: there are signs that WB/DC have learned a lesson, following what was reportedly a difficult and rushed development process on David Ayer’s newly-released DCEU addition, Suicide Squad. Multiple sources have now reported that studio executives tried to make significant changes to Suicide Squad after Ayer had filmed his vision for the movie. WB/DC now appears to be following Marvel Studios’ lead and working out any such creative differences before a single frame of footage is filmed on its upcoming DCEU movies (as Marvel is known for doing with its MCU films).
For example, Aquaman‘s script continues to be further refined, until it’s to the approval of everyone involved. Similarly, The Flash originally had Seth Grahame-Smith (screenwriter of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and WB’s upcoming animated LEGO Batman Movie) lined up to direct, but Grahame-Smith was replaced by Famuyiwa in June 2016: more than six months before filming is slated to begin. It was also reported at that time that Famuyiwa was hired because he was a “very compatible” fit to direct Grahame-Smith’s Flash script draft, based on the treatment by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie).
In other words: there shouldn’t be a repeat of the Suicide Squad situation, where Ayer reportedly had to put together his script draft in only six weeks. That’s all the more encouraging to hear, given the potential for greatness in a Flash movie that pairs a skilled and energetic storyteller in Famuyiwa behind the camera with up-and-coming talents such as Miller and Clemons onscreen.

Suicide Squad
is in theaters now. Wonder Woman opens on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, the Batman solo movie and Man of Steel 2 are currently without release dates.

[h=1]The Flash: Ezra Miller Praises Director & Iris West Actress[/h]

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC have taken a critical beating this year with the DC Extended Universal installments Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and now Suicide Squad – both of which have, alternatively, done very well commercially. In the future, however, the studios would obviously like to deliver DCEU films with wider (and less divisive) appeal. With an emphasis on the more playful tone compared to earlier DCEU movies – specifically Man of Steel and in particular Batman V Superman – the Comic-Con trailer for the superhero team-up movie Justice League suggests that film will indeed be more “fun” than its predecessors.
One character who already appears to be garnering high marks from critics – at least those in attendance at the Justice League set visits – is The Flash. However, with the television iteration of the Scarlet Speedster, led by Grant Gustin, already a crowd-pleaser heading into its third season, it appears as though the Ezra Miller-portrayed DCEU Flash will have to work that much harder to win over fans. However, it does appear as though Miller is already convinced that the DCEU’s solo Flash movie will be a hit – as he’s been singing the praises of the film’s director and one of his costars.

During an interview with MTV, Miller discussed his anticipation for the DCEU’s Flash solo movie; at the same time, praising director Rick Famuyiwa and Iris West actress, Kiersey Clemons, and even alluding to a race with TV Flash Grant Gustin. Chatting about his excitement for the film, as well as admiring Dope filmmaker Famuyiwa’s expertise, Miller had this to say:
I think there’s just an intention to make something extremely fun and something superhuman and something deeply human. It’s the thing we’re all trying to do, but I think Rick’s mind and his heart are in an excellent place, and his expertise as a filmmaker, as evidenced by Dope, all come together as very exciting factors to me.

Of course, a quality Barry Allen story has to feature a fantastic iteration of Iris West, and according to the Perks of Being a Wallflower actor, the film will showcase just that.
Kiersey is amazing. I had the opportunity to read with her and do some explorative acting in our chemistry read … the results of these experiments clearly were positive. I’m just deeply excited about what these people carry in their hearts, and I’m excited about the radical intention that everybody seems to be bringing to the genesis chamber of this film.
Regardless of the reception of Warner Bros./DC films thus far, it appears as though the main cast of these comic book films are truly enjoying themselves on set and are additionally publically sharing with fans reasons to be excited for the studio’s upcoming slate of movies. By all accounts, it appears as though Ezra Miller is nailing the beloved Barry Allen character so far, too.

[h=1]Cyborg Reportedly Confirmed to Appear in The Flash Movie[/h]

The DC Extended Universe has only just begun, but Warner Bros’ ambitious plans have already been laid out. Even with only three films under their belt, they have announced eight upcoming films. As if that was not enough, they have staked claim on several other dates for future and, as of this writing, unannounced DC projects. One of those upcoming films is The Flash, which will mark the first solo outing for Ezra Miller as Barry Allen.
He has already made his debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and a brief cameo in Suicide Squad, and will once again appear in Justice League prior to being the leading man. However, if the latest report is true, then a fellow Justice League member will be making an appearance as well.
Variety is reporting that Ray Fisher has been confirmed to reprise his role as Cyborg for The Flash movie, prior to him also getting a solo movie in 2020 – though The Flash is currently without a release date. Cyborg has already been shown in the trailer for Justice League, and now an appearance in The Flash as well will give audiences a minimum of two movies to get acquainted with the actor prior to him leading his own film, Cyborg.

This news should not come as a surprise with DC making an effort to keep the “solo movies” packed with various other members of the DCEU. In fact, executive producer Deborah Snyder hinted at Cyborg’s appearance in The Flash during the Justice League set visits earlier this year, as reported by Forbes. This has not been an uncommon practice on the Marvel side of things either, with actors constantly making cameos in other movies that are not their own.
There has not been much news on what the story for The Flash movie will revolve around, but we do know that Kiersey Clemons will also be featured as Iris West. Once they continue to flesh out the cast and director Rick Famuyiwa settles on the story, we should learn more about how the movie will fit into the DCEU. It has already been revealed that they could start production on the movie as soon as January of 2017 in London, so the process looks to be moving quickly if they have decided to include Fisher as well. With Cyborg now reportedly set to appear, the only question that remains is what other familiar faces could pop up as well.
Suicide Squad is in theaters now.

[h=1]Rumor: The Flash Movie’s Villains Are Captain Cold & Golden Glider[/h]

While still in its adolescence, the DC Extended Universe is finally up and running, with three films released thus far. While responses to Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, and the recently released Suicide Squad have been mixed, there is no shortage of excitement for the future installments of the DCEU. We are less than a year away from seeing Wonder Woman make her solo feature film debut, and that will be followed by perhaps one of the most anticipated films of all time – Justice League.
While Marvel approached its shared cinematic universe by introducing the Avengers in solo outings before teaming them up, Warner Bros has taken a more streamlined route with the DC Extended Universe. Outside of the Trinity, the other members of the Justice League will appear in their own solo films after the release of the big team up. Still, despite in some cases being years away, rumors continue to swirl around the developing productions of Aquaman, The Flash, and Shazam. While The Flash is yet to receive a release date, there has still been much discussion as to which villains Barry Allen (played by Ezra Miller) will be facing off against. It was recently rumored that Flash would have his hands full with the team known as the Rogues. But this may not be entirely true.

Jeff Sneider, a reporter for Mashable, has suggested on Twitter that these rumors may not be entirely accurate. Rather, he says that the last he heard, “villains are Rogues members Golden Glider and her bro Captain Cold.
Seeing rumors about the Rogues in THE FLASH. FWIW, last week I heard villains are Rogues members Golden Glider and her bro Captain Cold.
— Jeff Sneider (@TheInSneider) August 29, 2016
Should this report be more than just a rumor, this is an exciting development. In part due to The Flash, the Grant Gustin-starring series on The CW, Barry Allen is more popular than ever and certain members of the Rogues have prominent roles in the series, which has caused their popularity to skyrocket as well. While Golden Glider has only appeared in a few episodes, Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (played by Wentworth Miller) recurred on the series before earning a starring role on Legends of Tomorrow, and then being upped to a regular across all Arrowverse shows. He is no doubt one of the more popular characters in the Arrowverse.

If it turns out that the villains in The Flash are Captain Cold and his sister, Golden Glider, rather than the entire Rogues, this could prevent the film from suffering the effects of overcrowding. Comic book movies have been known to throw in too many characters on occasion, and not always to the film’s benefit. Films like Spider-Man 3, Batman & Robin, and The Amazing Spiderman 2 all featured numerous villains, allowing little time to develop any of them properly.Perhaps the best route for Warner Bros. to take is to introduce only a few members of the Rogues before having them team-up in a sequel to The Flash. Maybe Captain Cold is unable to defeat Barry Allen, so he needs to seek out help. Could he break Captain Boomerang out of prison? Possibly. Of course, this is all speculation, but that’s what makes it so much fun.Suicide Squad is in theaters now. [h=1]The Flash: Billy Crudup in Talks to Play Barry Allen’s Father[/h]

Perhaps in an effort to win back audiences who were turned off by the grim atmosphere of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Comic-Con trailer for Zack Snyder’s upcoming superhero team-up movie Justice League prominently featured Ezra Miller as the wise-cracking speedster Barry Allen a.k.a. The Flash. Barry will be the star of his own solo movie in 2018, directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) and co-starring Kiersey Clemons (Transparent) as Iris West, which is expected to begin production this year.
Now, another intriguing bit of casting news has broken, as Variety reports that Billy Crudup (Watchmen) is in talks to play Barry’s father (Henry Allen, unless the movie decides to radically reinvent Barry’s backstory). Warner Bros. has yet to comment on the news, but Variety is generally a very reliable source. It sounds like Crudup isn’t locked in for the role just yet, but this would certainly be great casting.
Crudup recently wrapped production on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus follow-up Alien: Covenant, and also appeared in Tom McCarthy’s journalism drama Spotlight, which won an Oscar for Best Picture earlier this year. To superhero fans, however, he’s better known for playing (largely via motion capture) the terrifyingly powerful character Doctor Manhattan in Snyder’s 2009 adaptation of acclaimed Alan Moore graphic novel Watchmen.

Not only does Crudup have a connection to one of the DC Extended Universe’s chief architects, as well as some great recent credits to his name, he also bears a resemblance to Miller that would make the two of them very convincing as father and son. This would actually mark a reunion for Miller and Crudup, since they recently co-starred in true-life drama The Stanford Prison Experiment. Moreover, the TV version of The Flash over on The CW has demonstrated how emotionally powerful a father-son relationship can be on screen (using both Henry Allen and Barry’s adoptive father, Joe West), and prominently featuring Henry Allen would continue the DCEU’s trend of exploring superheroes’ strong connections to their parents.
In other words, let’s hope those casting talks turn out well, because Crudup would be an excellent addition to what is already shaping up to be an extremely buzzworthy solo movie outing for the Flash. There’s even a possibility that Crudup could make an appearance in Justice League, either by sneaking in at the end of principal photography or jumping in during additional photography. At the very least, Barry will probably have a picture of his father lying around.
Suicide Squad is in theaters now. The Flash, the Batman solo movie, Man of Steel 2, and Justice League Dark are currently without release dates.

[h=1]The Flash: John Wesley Shipp Praises Henry Allen Movie Casting[/h]

The Scarlet Speedster has a way of confusing even the most quick-witted of individuals, at least if they’re not paying close attention – mostly because no one outside the superhero realm can move at the speed of light. To wit, the popular DC superhero will now be in two places at once, although not technically the same two people. The upcoming The Flash movie will see Ezra Miller step into the role separate his small screen cohort Grant Gustin on CW’s The Flash.
On the CW, though, Barry Allen’s father Henry (played by John Wesley Shipp) also enjoyed universal fluidity, returning to the show on Earth-3 even after his character’s death. At the same time, his dimension hopping won’t transfer to his big screen counterpart. However, Shipp does seem pleased with Warner Bros’ probable choice for Henry Allen.
News of DC’s cinematic casting choice, that of Billy Crudup (Watchmen), recently reached Shipp through Twitter (via Comic Book). The actor, who also plays Earth-3 mirror image Jay Garrick – received a Tweet from a fan who praised Shipp, saying that Crudup had “big shoes to fill!” Shipp responded in kind, saying, “Billy Crudup is AWESOME actor. Love this choice. Can’t wait to see their take on it.
@markymarc70 @Variety @krolljvar Billy Crudup is AWESOME actor. Love this choice. Can't wait to see their take on it. Thank you Marc!
— John Wesley Shipp (@JohnWesleyShipp) September 10, 2016

Shipp and Crudup are both fantastic actors, but taking on the role of Henry Allen is never an easy one. If the movie runs parallel to its source comics, Barry’s father will be framed for the murder of his mother Nora. Henry subsequently dies in prison before The Flash can exonerate him. Although unlikely, the film could also choose a similar route to the CW show – where Barry clears his father’s name and gets him released from prison. Unfortunately, Henry doesn’t have long to enjoy his freedom, before zippy scoundrel Zoom cuts him down. Either way, things aren’t looking up for Henry Allen.

While Crudup’s role hasn’t been officially announced, it’s a good bet he will get the part – especially since he already has a good rapport with DCEU world-builder Zack Snyder. Shipp’s role as Henry Allen/Jay Garrick certainly would be a good inspiration for Crudup, since the former brought charm and wit to his mirror roles in the Arrowverse. Of course, Crudup has a solid track record as a thespian as well, showcasing his acting chops as Dr. Zimbardo in 2015’s The Stanford Prison Experiment, as well as lending real weight to Doctor Manhattan in Watchmen (a character who is, interestingly enough, DC canon as of “Rebirth”). As long as DC retains the strong father-son bond that drove Barry Allen to use his powers for the benefit of humanity, the Justice League spinoff should retain the humor and heart of its titular hero.
At this point, though, it’s still too early to tell which direction the DC speedster’s film adaption will take. Director Rick Famuyiwa won’t even begin shooting until at least January of next year, in plenty of time for The Flash’s release in March of 2018. He may take some cues from the CW favorite, analyzing what’s worked and what hasn’t played as well on the show thus far. Of course, he and scripter Chris Miller will probably avoid rehashing plot lines from their TV counterpart altogether. Either way, there ought to be plenty of dramatic moments and lightning-fast action to go around.

The Flash, the Batman solo movie and Man of Steel 2 are currently without release dates.

[h=1]The Flash Movie Director Completes Script Revision; Teases Cyborg Appearance[/h]

The DCEU continues to move along at a fast pace, with The Flash being the next film to start production. Warner Bros. is currently focused on finishing up Wonder Woman and wrapping principal photography on Justice League, but then the attention will turn to Ezra Miller’s solo film. In an effort to quickly establish the universe and all the characters, DC is making sure to give characters plenty of chances to appear on screen together. Not only will every major DC character scheduled to have a solo film (outside of Green Lantern) appear in Justice League, but Cyborg has been linked to The Flash.
Cyborg’s appearance was reported again not long ago, which led to director Rick Famuyiwa playing with fans’ expectations. As the movie moves closer to production, idea of Cyborg having a part in The Flash film seems more like a formality. And now, according to Famuyiwa, the latest version of the script once again suggests Cyborg’s appearance.
Famuyiwa took to Twitter to reveal that he has completed another draft of the script. Standing on top of the script appears to be a Funko Flash toy, as well as one of Cyborg. Flash’s toy is easy to make out given the design of his suit, but the possible Cyborg figure is only shown from the ankles down. While it is not an outright confirmation, it is just the latest way to tease the hero played by Ray Fisher having a role in the film.

pic.twitter.com/4wm5LbaMoA
— Rick Famuyiwa (@RickFamuyiwa) September 26, 2016
The amount of information suggesting Cyborg is in The Flash film has been so great it would be a shock when the film comes out if he does not appear. If the reports were outright false, it is much easier (and better) for those involved to refute the reports than to let speculation to continue. This will be Fisher’s second appearance after a cameo in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, so hopefully Justice League will successfully establish the relationship between the Scarlet Speedster and the Machine Man.There is not much else known about the plot of The Flash, outside of an entire team of super villains potentially being in play. This would make sense as to why Flash requires the help of Cyborg in his solo movie. Even with Cyborg’s appearance, fans should still be able to expect a heavy dose of Miller in the lead. It is his movie after all and with Barry’s father and Iris West being cast, it’s a good bet that his personal life will be a part of the film’s focus as well. Considering Famuyiwa’s breakout directorial effort Dope offered a solid look into the lives of its characters, it stands to reason that he will endeavor to bring some of that to his big-budget superhero blockbuster as well.Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters. Wonder Woman opens in theaterson June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. [h=1]The Flash Movie’s Iris West: Rick Famuyiwa Exit is ‘Very Upsetting’[/h]

Such upcoming DC Extended Universe films as Justice League and Aquaman have enjoyed smooth-sailing on their way to the big screen so far, but the DCEU’s The Flash solo movie has experienced more difficulty ingetting off the ground, by comparison. Though many fans were excited when, way back in 2014, it was revealed that Ezra Miller would take on the role of Barry Allen in the DCEU, a solo vehicle for Miller’s superhero counterpart has encountered a couple of big bumps along the way since then.
Amidst a flurry of casting news and rumors, we knew a few things for certain — Miller would play protagonist Barry Allen, Kiersey Clemons would play Iris West, and Rick Famuyiwa would replace Seth Grahame-Smith as director on The Flash. Many were excited about the Famuyiwa news, as he was primarily responsible for bringing Clemons (who he worked with in Dope) onboard. Now, in the wake of Famuyiwa’s recent departure over “creative differences,” it looks like Clemons may also be unsure about her role with the film moving forward.
In a recent interview with THR, Clemons was unafraid to voice her strong emotions over this latest production shake-up:
“Rick was one of the main reasons I wanted to do the movie. So him not being a part of it is obviously very upsetting to me…All I can do is give it up to the gods. Let’s see what happens. Let’s see who’s going to jump in.”

Though the actor sounds cautious about any potential new directors, she did specify that she would stay attached to the project and do her best as Iris. Clemons stated:
“Ezra and I are going to do what we promised to do from the beginning. No matter who the director is, I am going to do what I think Iris should be.”
Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons and Shameik Moore in Dope (2015)

While Clemons is understandably displeased about this latest development on The Flash, it’s nice to know that she’s committed to staying onboard to play Iris West. Whether Clemons would remain attached to the film was up in the air after Famuyiwa’s exit, since the director presumably used their previous work connection to get her involved with The Flash to begin with. Billy Crudup, who is lined up to play Henry Allen in the film, was also linked to Famuyiwa, though we have no word on whether or not his plans to star in the movie have changed.
This is likely the best recourse for Clemons moving forward, as The Flash could provide her with worldwide exposure that will help to make her more of a mainstream name – not to mention, this means that Justice League cameo that she’s reportedly filmed won’t have to be scrapped. We are all the more glad she’s decided to stick with the project based on Miller’s crowing reviews of her and what she brings to the role of Iris.
Though the wild world of Hollywood can be a fickle one, especially in a franchise as huge as the DCEU, it’s comforting to know that some things are remaining constant. So we can report — at least for now — that no matter its new director, you can still expect to see Kiersey Clemons and Ezra Miller in The Flash. (Now we just have to figure out what’s going on with Deadpool 2…)

[h=1]The Flash Movie Starts Production ‘This Year’ Says Ezra Miller[/h]

Although initially launched in the Zack Snyder 2013 Superman vehicle, Man of Steel, Warner Bros’ DC Extended Universe really kicked off earlier this year with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The second film in the shared universe introduced a bevy of new DC Comics heroes, giving large roles to Bruce Wayne aka Batman (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), while other characters received cameo introductions. Barry Allen aka The Flash (Ezra Miller) made his first appearance in Batman V Superman, appeared again in David Ayer’s villain team-up Suicide Squad, and will return for Snyder’s Justice League that debuts next year.
However, Barry Allen’s solo venture, The Flash, is seemingly without a release date and without a director since Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa recently parted ways with the project. The Flash movie was a part of the DCEU slate when it was first announced, with Miller’s casting revealed along with the film aiming for a March 2018 release, but it remains to be seen when it will be released and who will eventually sit in the director’s chair. Now, Miller offers some hint as to the timeline of when the film will head into production.
During a roundtable interview with Screen Rant promoting his next release, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miller spoke about the progress of The Flash movie and when fans can expect the film to gear up for production. He said:

“We don’t know right now [who the director will be], but I think we’ll start this year, I think it’s coming up pretty quick.”

When it was announced that the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander had been slated for release on March 16, 2018 — with Warner Bros taking care of distribution on the video game film — it seemingly indicated The Flash would be bumped from that date. However, Warner Bros has not announced any change in release date for The Flash, and if the film does enter production soon, they could be sticking with an early 2018 date — though it remains to be seen if it will be March 16 or another day.
Certainly, Miller’s comments seem to indicate Warner Bros is keeping The Flash on track for that 2018 release date, especially since it was previously reported the project would begin filming in January 2017 — although, that was prior to Famuyiwa’s exit. Earlier this fall, Famuyiwa announced a script draft for The Flash was finished and with key roles like Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) and Henry Allen (Billy Crudup) already cast, the film could be ready to go once a new director is named.
That said, who the new director will be and when The Flash movie will actually enter production remains to be seen. But, Miller’s comment about starting soon should give fans some assurance that Warner Bros has made The Flash movie a priority in the burgeoning DCEU.

[h=1]The Flash Movie: Ezra Miller Says Rick Famuyiwa’s Exit is ‘Deeply Unfortunate’[/h]

Warner Bros first introduced their DC Extended Universe with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013, though the shared superhero world exponentially expanded with this year’s releases, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Batman V Superman introduced a number of heroes, many of which are expected to star in solo outings as part of the larger DCEU slate. The Flash movie, for instance, was announced to star Ezra Miller as Barry Allen with an expected release date in March 2018.
However, The Flash film production has hit a number of roadblocks since it was first announced. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’s Seth Grahame-Smith was initially expected to direct, but left the project earlier this year. Then, Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa signed on to helm The Flash, but parted ways with the film, reportedly due to creative differences, last week. Now, Miller comments on Famuyiwa’s exit and his hope for The Flash movie’s future.
During a roundtable interview with Screen Rant promoting his next release, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miller spoke about losing Famuyiwa and the difficulties that can be part of the process of bringing a movie to life. He said:

“It’s deeply unfortunate, I’m very sad that things didn’t work out with Rick [Famuyiwa], but I also understand that these processes are complicated and really involve a lot of different factors. I trust in the process and I really trust Warner Bros with this property and I’m really excited to do it — however it happens.”

The Flash co-star Kiersey Clemmons, who will play Iris West, previously offered her thoughts on Famuyiwa’s exit, saying it was “very upsetting” since he was “one of the main reasons I wanted to do the movie.” Clemmons and Famuyiwa previously worked together on Dope. While on board The Flash, Famuyiwa additionally received praise from Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street), who came up with the film’s story.
Certainly, those who were excited to see Famuyiwa’s take on The Flash may be disappointed he left the project, but it’s possible Warner Bros may use a version of the script he had a hand in. However, Warner Bros has brought in top notch talent on their DCEU films before, and it’s likely the eventual director of The Flash will offer a unique and compelling experience.
That said, until Warner Bros does decide who will helm The Flash, it remains to be seen how the film will come together — though, considering Miller’s comment about production starting “this year,” we’ll presumably hear something soon. Still, with talent like Miller, Clemmons, as well as the duo of Lord and Miller, involved in the project, The Flash still has potential to please DC Comics fans and casual moviegoers alike.
