Enough time has passed for even casual movie fans to notice that where big screen blockbusters are concerned, the superheroes of DC and Marvel Comics reign supreme. But while Marvel has dominated the box office, the combination of DC and Warner Bros. Television has taken over TV with alarming speed. Shows like Gotham, Constantine and Supergirl are spreading the comics universe to other networks, and are clearly just the beginning. But with The CW (WB’s own network) laying claim to Justice League members Arrow and The Flash, many fans suspected that a link to the budding DC Comics movie universe could be in the cards.
Rumors of Arrow star Stephen Amell joining a Justice League team-up movie have circled for some time, but speculation picked up when The Flash (a lock for any version of the League) was similarly brought to live-action by Grant Gustin, the star of one of the best pilots of the season, and The CW’s most-watched program ever.
Sadly, hopes of seeing Gustin’s take on Barry Allen alongside Henry Cavill’s Superman or Ben Affleck’s Batman were dashed; first when DC Entertainment boss Geoff Johns explained that DC’s TV and films would be separate universes, and finally, when The Flash movie was announced for 2018 with Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) in the title role.
Apparently, it isn’t just the fans who were surprised (and possibly disappointed) that Gustin’s well-received take wouldn’t make the jump to film. Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Stephen Amell was asked: if a Green Arrow film was on its way, should he have the first chance at reprising the role?
The actor’s response is one with which plenty of CW fans will agree – especially where Grant Gustin’s Flash is concerned:
As DC’s TV universe has continued to grow, Amell has taken the task of building hype on himself (including playful jabs at the competition), so it’s no surprise to hear him offer a heartfelt reaction, followed by a clarification. Geoff Johns has also explained his view that all DC content, TV or film, is a multiverse just like the comics – there’s no ‘true’ version of Oliver Queen or Barry Allen; simply ones that certain fans will like best.
That may seem like a cop-out, but it’s one that’s existed as a comic book convention for decades. And while a Green Arrow film not starring Amell could be seen as a slam, the actor himself isn’t concerned with the difference (for the record, the film version of The Flash has been in development long before Gustin’s take). Amell has made his feelings on the notion of ‘earning’ a feature film known in the past, explaining that the old way of thinking – that TV is somehow less than film – just doesn’t apply when The CW is building a Justice League every week.
When he was asked if he was preparing himself for either making – or missing – a leap to the big screen, the actor stated that his views haven’t changed:

“I am completely indifferent. First of all, wanting a movie undersells the idea that making 23 episodes a year isn’t a huge achievement. It is, and I would put that degree of difficulty up against any feature film that has ever been made… except Lord of the Rings and that gigantic Peter Jackson-led undertaking… and maybe Titanic. But, other than those two movies, I’d put making 23 hours of interesting content in a TV season up against anything on the film side.
“It is difficult to me to want or envision an Arrow movie when we are shooting the 10th episode of our third season with 13 more episodes to go and in all likelihood 3 more seasons on the other side of that. I’m interested in keeping that content fresh. Once we get to the end of that road, maybe then I’ll shift my focus.”
There will still be fans who think Gustin’s talents are worthy of the big screen, but there is wisdom in Amell’s words. Producer Greg Berlanti has gone on record with his belief that superhero origin stories may be better suited to TV than film, and Amell seems to be citing the same reasons for his stance. In Warner Bros.’ shared film universe, that superhero will be portrayed by actor Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), who is expected to appear in the two-part Justice League extravaganza, as well as his own solo vehicle in 2018.
Unlike a majority of recent WB/DC casting decisions (Ben Affleck, The Rock, Jesse Eisenberg, etc.) Miller is not a household name. He has starred in a number of well-received indie dramas (see also: We Need to Talk About Kevin), but the masses won’t become familiar with him until he dons Flash’s costume. That could be an intimidating task for a rising star, but the youngster is enthused by the opportunity presented to him.
While speaking with HitFlix, Miller discussed his feelings about being the one to portray The Flash for the next handful of years, highlighting the fact that it presents him with longterm job security:

Miller’s comments are not that different from the ones Henry Cavill recently made, where the Superman actor stated that he hopes to play the Last Son of Krypton “for years to come.” Starring in a major blockbuster franchise such as this can be a daunting task, and it’s easy to get burned out by the lengthy process of making just one such film. For now, though, Miller has a positive attitude and hopefully he’ll be able to bring that excitement with him to the screen when he gets his chance to play Flash.
It’s not hard to see why a thespian in his position would be so eager to take on a role like this. It’s no secret that everyone in Hollywood wants in on the superhero game; if Miller becomes a fan-favorite, his blossoming career will continue to go up and give him other opportunities to build upon his résumé. It’s true that a majority of Miller’s time will be spent in the DC universe, but as Affleck has shown, that doesn’t mean he’ll exclusively be in that world.
As for the full extent of Miller’s contract, that’s difficult to gauge at this point in time. He’s obviously on board for multiple pictures, but he played coy when it came to saying the actual length. The two Justice League films and The Flash standalone movie give us the industry-standard three movies, but there’s always the possibility for cameos in other features, or even a Flash sequel if things work out in the long run.
In the meantime, it is a positive sign for fans that the actor WB is entrusting with this part is looking forward to putting his stamp on it and carry the mantle for a number of years. Regardless of how many times we see him, we can take comfort in the fact that his mind is in the right place and he’ll try his hardest to please all the DC fans that will be carefully watching him.

That could be changing soon, with a new report claiming the studio is currently pursuing directing duo Phil Lord & Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 22 Jump Street) to helm The Flash solo movie in 2018.
On the latest installment of SchmoesKnow‘s MeetTheMoviePress, TheWrap‘s Jeff Sneider touched on a few DC Comics movies which, for the time being, seem to still be in the early stages of development.
But on the Flash front, Warner Bros. is swinging for the fences:

Yet the idea of a comedic take on The Flash in Zack Snyder’s Justice League universe may be the biggest surprise.
It was screenwriter Marc Guggenheim who first implied that The Flash would take a darker turn (before Man of Steel showed a more serious superhero was DC’s preferred vision), describing his now years-old treatment as part thriller, part superhero story, and part sports movie. That story was constructed with the help of Greg Berlanti, and those influences can still be seen in the TV show that the duo would go on to executive produce.
With Lord & Miller now a desired creative team, it would seem that Warner Bros. is looking for a far more comedic slant. That’s not a surprise or risk in itself, since every animated Justice League has seen that it’s the team’s speedster who tends to bring the comic relief. Miller’s energy and charm have been somewhat overshadowed by a number of dramatic roles, but fans may get to see his lighter side showcased in Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck this July.

The Flash Movie: Vampire Hunter Scribe In Talks to Write & Direct
Warner Bros. and DC is nearly done assembling a team of directors to oversee their DC Extended Universe – the shared DC movie universe that was established by Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013 – on through to 2018. WB/DC is taking a so-called “filmmaker-driven” approach to building the DCEU, which is why it’s fitting that the filmmakers currently onboard for big screen DC Comics adaptations are all experienced industry veterans; including Snyder, David Ayer (Fury), Patty Jenkins (Monster), and James Wan (Furious 7).

I'm not that interested in this movie, because Grant Gustin is the true Flash to me. Ezra Miller is some stoned gay emo looking kid, who doesn't fit the image of Barry Allen.

It’s plausible that Allen’s outfit from the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game will serve as the basis for inspiration when designing the movie suit. That costume certainly has a distinct look that fits the rumored description of an armored look. A variation of this would also fit aesthetically into the DC Expanded Universe, as the costumes worn by Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice all look like they’d be suitable for military applications. In terms of expansive comic book universes, Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has pioneered a version of cohesive multimedia continuity for its superhero franchises wherein the events of their movies, television shows and Netflix series are designed to be happening in-tandem, with events from one medium effecting the others and characters (most of the time) able to cross over between platforms. At the same time, rival studio Warner Bros. has opted to go a different route with their DC superheroes, in TV series like The CW’s Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and the web series Vixen all take place in a shared continuity of their own, they do not (officially) connect to the continuity of either CBS’ Supergirl or the emerging DC Extended Universe spinning-out of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Fans have reacted with mixed feelings, with many who’ve already become loyal to one version of their favorite hero resenting the idea of being asked to accept another existing in an adjacent franchise.
But one person who’s not upset is Grant Gustin, who portrays the speed-powered Barry Allen on the hit CW series The Flash. In fact, the actor isn’t having any of this hero-vs-hero talk, and recently took to Twitter to clarify that he has no issue with someone else donning the Scarlet Speedster’s tights for the Justice League movie.
Reacting to some news outlets erroneously reporting that he was somehow unhappy with another actor taking on the role for the movie side of the DC Universe, Gustin posted a snap of a lengthy text explaining his thoughts in greater detail that he doesn’t condone the “bashing” of prospective “Movie Flash” Ezra Miller, despite having “liked” several Tweets from fans who had expressed their desire to see him continue the role instead.
Gustin recently stated:
If Miller’s Flash does in fact arrive on the big screen in BVS, it will be interesting to see how fans react, and whether or not the character makes a strong initial impression or if he is immediately compared to his television counterpart.

In terms of expansive comic book universes, Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has pioneered a version of cohesive multimedia continuity for its superhero franchises wherein the events of their movies, television shows and Netflix series are designed to be happening in-tandem, with events from one medium effecting the others and characters (most of the time) able to cross over between platforms. At the same time, rival studio Warner Bros. has opted to go a different route with their DC superheroes, in TV series like The CW’s Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and the web series Vixen all take place in a shared continuity of their own, they do not (officially) connect to the continuity of either CBS’ Supergirl or the emerging DC Extended Universe spinning-out of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Fans have reacted with mixed feelings, with many who’ve already become loyal to one version of their favorite hero resenting the idea of being asked to accept another existing in an adjacent franchise.
But one person who’s not upset is Grant Gustin, who portrays the speed-powered Barry Allen on the hit CW series The Flash. In fact, the actor isn’t having any of this hero-vs-hero talk, and recently took to Twitter to clarify that he has no issue with someone else donning the Scarlet Speedster’s tights for the Justice League movie.
Reacting to some news outlets erroneously reporting that he was somehow unhappy with another actor taking on the role for the movie side of the DC Universe, Gustin posted a snap of a lengthy text explaining his thoughts in greater detail that he doesn’t condone the “bashing” of prospective “Movie Flash” Ezra Miller, despite having “liked” several Tweets from fans who had expressed their desire to see him continue the role instead.
Gustin recently stated:
“I fully support Ezra Miller as Barry Allen and the Flash on the feature side of DC. I’ve never met the guy, but I think he is a fantastic and interesting actor. Would I have liked to play Barry Allen in a film? Sure. I love this character and it has changed my life and making movies and tv is something I hope to be fortunate enough to do for the rest of my life. I “liked” some tweets from fans that expressed their support of me and said they would’ve enjoyed seeing me in the movie. Nothing of anyone “bashing” Ezra. I don’t condone that type of behavior (especially on the Internet) and I definitely don’t partake.”
Miller is set to play The Flash in the first Justice League movie (it is rumored but unconfirmed that he may also briefly appear in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) before spinning the character off into a solo feature of his own. Thus far, The Flash is the only League member to be appearing concurrently in a different franchise, but not the only DC character, as Amanda Waller, one of the primary antagonists of the upcoming Suicide Squad set to be portrayed by Viola Davis, already exists on Arrow in the person of actress Cynthia Addai-Robinson.
If Miller’s Flash does in fact arrive on the big screen in BVS, it will be interesting to see how fans react, and whether or not the character makes a strong initial impression or if he is immediately compared to his television counterpart.

As those who have seen the movie already know, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice offers several tantalizing teases for upcoming movies in the DC Extended Universe – not only by giving Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) a proper introduction, but also by offering a first glimpse of other Justice League members like The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa).
Miller in particular faces perhaps a greater challenge than any of the DCEU’s other new stars, since he will inevitably end up facing comparisons to The CW’s popular The Flash TV show, which stars Grant Gustin in the title role. Moreover, since Barry Allen is established as already having superpowers by the time of Batman V Superman, and he won’t appear in his own solo movie until after the release of Justice League, it’s reasonably safe to assume that The Flash won’t be an origin story – at least, not primarily.
That leaves the question of what kind of movie The Flash will be, and DCEU producer Deborah Snyder has just offered a big hint. Speaking to Forbes about the upcoming collection of DC movies, Snyder revealed that The Flash will feature Cyborg in what sounds like a pretty substantial role:
“As you can imagine, when we get to the Flash movie, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher — who plays Cyborg — are kind of our youngest characters, and they have a really nice camaraderie with each other. Ezra is super funny, so the tone of that film will be very different than the rest of them.”
“Funny” has seemingly been the watchword at Warner Bros. since many of Batman V Superman‘s reviews criticized the movie for being too dark; in fact, this year’s supervillain team-up Suicide Squad is rumored to be undergoing reshoots that will provide some lighter material for the final edit. Miller got a chance to demonstrate his comedy chops in last year’s raunchy romantic comedy Trainwreck, but he is perhaps better known for his role in the grim drama We Need To Talk About Kevin. He also starred in 2012 coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Fisher, meanwhile, is something of an unknown quantity, since Cyborg is his first feature film role.

Snyder also re-emphasized that Warner Bros. is a “director-driven company” and that “it’s all about the director’s point of view and what they can bring to it.” The Flash is being written and directed by Seth Grahame-Smith, who has never directed a feature film before but did write the genre mash-up novels Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, both of which have been adapted for the screen.
Of course, Snyder’s comment shouldn’t necessarily be taken to mean that The Flash will be a team-up movie in which Cyborg plays a huge role. In fact, knowing how easily interview quotes can take on a different context when written down, there’s a possibility that she was only talking about Miller and Fisher’s chemistry as an aside, and that Fisher won’t appear in Miller’s movie at all. But given the interconnected nature of these movies, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see the various Justice League members making appearances in each other’s movies.
