We're looking at it from a 2021 lens.

But back when the game first came out, it was such a huge departure and massive improvement over ME1 in the gun-play department.

Gears, Mafia definitive edition, Outriders, and now this. I'm almost certain Necrokiller only enjoys 3rd person shooters that don't have a jump button 😄

Even with the improvements, ME1 just hasn't aged well. Quite frankly, the best part was the end credits song by Faunts coupled with the feeling of knowing that I somehow managed to persevere through the game. I'm sure ME2/3 will fare a lot better than this.

ME2 aged better than ME1, but it was still a chore to play. Just like ME1, it's not possible to climb or leap across cover spots without actually going into cover. Feels extremely clumsy. Moreover, the whole game's basically an elaborate recruitment mission. I get why some would prefer that, but not really my jam. Still, it's very impressive how story scenarios can play out differently based on your choice of party members and prior decisions going all the way back to ME1. Good game overall, but the gameplay hasn't aged as well as I had expected.

Started ME3 and instantly noticed how much better it is to play. Controls are snappier, the dodge roll is an excellent addition (it doesn't feel like Shepard is as often glued to the floor as in the previous game), double tapping the cover button finally lets you skip the cover animation and climb across cover (can't believe it took them 3 games to figure this out lol), and the hit reactions and cover mechanics are noticeably improved. On the whole, this is a very competent shooter. I'm somewhere in Act 2, and really enjoying it so far, not just because of the gameplay but also the more focused storyline. Also, characters no longer look like they were risen from the dead (I mean, Shepard kinda was, but yeah lol).

@Chandoo could you tell me which of the side missions/assignments I need to keep a lookout for to get a clearer understanding of the story? I skipped most of the side stuff in ME1 and 2 because of the combat, but I'm more than willing to take them on in ME3.

Honestly, I would say do everything.

Keep an ear out for Traynor (ME3's version of Kelly Chambers). She will tell you about some side missions, which are time sensitive, and need to be done to recruit back (and make sure they don't die) some of the ME2 cast. The game doesn't tell you that these missions have a deadline, so I would recommend to do these as soon as you unlock them.

EG, no too far into the game Traynor will tell you about a mission in Grissom Academy. It has nothing to do with the main story, but you will meet one of your ME2 squad mates here ... and if you leave this mission idling while doing the other story content, eventually this mission locks out and that squad member dies in the background.

Here's how I would space out the DLC for optimal experience:

- From Ashes (The DLC mission for Javik, the Prothean party member)
Do THIS ASAP. Javik is essentially a mandatory party member. Bring him in any mission that may involve Asari for optimal lore.

Or hell, just bring him in every mission to see how everyone reacts to a living Prothean. It's pretty fun actually.

- Leviathan DLC Missions
These missions unlock some ways into the game and they give the most back story on Reapers.
You can do these any time in the later parts of the game once you feel like you're getting closer to the final stretch.
The DLC pack is divided into a half dozen or so story missions, so you can even do one of the story missions for the DLC in between the regular story missions to spruce it up.

- Omega DLC
This is a long single continuous mission. Not my favorite, I just get it over with as soon as it becomes available.

- Citadel
This unlocks in the 2nd half of the game and IMO is the *true ending* of the game, even though it takes place before the story ending.
This is the final DLC ME3 got and a big love-letter from Bioware. Every character is present, including all the cast from ME1 and 2 (Wrex etc).
My recommendation honestly is to leave this until you beat the story for the maximum effect and enjoyment. Doing this before you finish the the the first time will just make the regular ending seem that much plain and meh.

Just a bit more on Citadel.

It's a bit DLC divided into 2 segments. 1st segment is a story based thing. 2nd segment is a huge party Shepard can throw in his new apartment involving *every single crew member* from all 3 games. It's essentially what you play this DLC for.

The huge party and its aftermath is IMO the best way to close out the trilogy, cause you're basically having a big fun blast with all the cast and it ends on a really sweet note.

The ending of the Citadel DLC alone is the main reason I always leave this for after the main story.

Oh man, I remember this DLC....nostalgic vibes....I should pick this game up now.

@Chandoo thanks for that detailed explanation. Much appreciated.

Currently just finished the mission where you have to go speak with the Salarian councilor on the Citadel.
Spoiler: show
Couldn't save her, or the female Krogan i.e. Eve (since I didn't do Mordin's favor mission in ME2 I guess).

Am I still at a point where I can access Traynor's missions?

Imagine thinking the combat will fix ME3's story :ROFLMAO:
Don't know what your issues with the story are (the ending, perhaps? Heard most people had issues with that), but so far I'm finding it more engaging than ME1/2 🤷‍♂️

Yes, I think you'll still be able to do that mission @CerebralTiger

Also, damn I've never had that negative of an outcome for that mission lol. Importing a complete ME2 save file really does change the story.

The DLCs were a band-aid solution at best.

It was the kind of band aid that stopped the bleeding :p

With everything in the package from the start, ME3 is now finally a 'complete' experience and *IMO* a worthy conclusion to the trilogy.
