Haven't played the DLC. Is it set after the ending, or does it flesh out earlier parts of the timeline?

Unlike ME2, all the ME3 DLC has to be done before the ending, and is generally set before the final fight for obvious ending reasons, and doing them before the finale has some very tangible conversation additions at the end. Specifically, Leviathan.

Played some Mass Effect 1, and...this has not aged well for me. Bullet sponge enemies, horrendous cover system, weird animations, the melee mechanic seems like it's from a PS2 games. They should've at least brought the cover system more in line with that of ME2/3.
ME2 Shadow Broker is just as good today as I remember it all those years ago.

Yes, RPGs deserve a free pass because reasons lol. There are plenty of shooters with progression-based damage numbers where most enemies aren't bullet sponges, Destiny being one example.
Mass Effect 2 itself was a notable improvement over 1 in this area.

Sorry Mr. Game Designer but not all shooters with a progression system are RPGs.
Besides, even at the highest difficulty you can gun down enemies fairly quickly if you have the right weapon stats for enemy types.

Love it or hate it, can't deny ME3 has a very strong opening (minus plot-child)
Watching the earth get decimated within a matter of minutes by the Reapers is an incredible way to open the final game in the trilogy.
