The recent on-screen DC universe has a few key architects, and producer/screenwriter David S. Goyer is responsible for a fair amount of its storytelling brickwork. Goyer worked on the screenplay for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and scripted Zack Snyder’s recent Superman reboot tale Man of Steel, and is also a showrunner on NBC’s new Hellblazer TV series Constantine.

DC comics are currently pretty well served on TV, with four different TV shows based on DC properties currently airing across a range of networks. There hasn’t, however, been a live action Superman series since Smallville drew to a close in 2011, and Gotham has somewhat one-upped the concept of Clark Kent’s teenage years by introducing a pre-teen Bruce Wayne. Now it’s Superman’s turn to up the stakes of the comic book prequel show, in a new series called Krypton that seems to be set before Superman is even born.

This report comes from Bleeding Cool, which recently broke the news of a new Supergirl TV series and live-action X-Men TV show; according to Bleeding Cool‘s sources, Goyer is currently developing Krypton. That’s the only detail that’s currently available, but it sounds lot like this show will be about life on Superman’s home planet prior to its destruction. Since Krypton exploded shortly after baby Kal-El escaped from it, it’s safe to assume that such a show wouldn’t feature the planet’s most famous son.

Details about Krypton (or even confirmation that it’s more than just a rumor) are sparse at the moment and it’s unclear which network the show is intended to air on. Supergirl, which will follow the adventures of Superman’s cousin and fellow Kryptonian Kara Zor-el, is headed to CBS and there’s always the possibility that the two shows will be connected. Either way, it’s easy to imagine a show like this being snapped up quickly amid the current comic book adaptation frenzy.

The lack of concrete information leaves plenty of room to speculate based on the title, and with the wealth of Kryptonian lore in the comics that could be drawn from there’s certainly potential for an interesting sci-fi show set on the planet. Goyer’s involvement suggests that the show could directly tie into the version of Krypton seen in Man of Steel and expand further upon the politics of that world, perhaps by following Jor-El during his younger days.

Right now all we have to go in is guesswork, so let us know in the comments what you think would be the best approach for a Superman prequel series to take, and which depiction of Krypton would be the most interesting one to explore.

We’ll keep you updated on Krypton as more details emerge.

[h=1]Krypton TV Show Ordered to Series by Syfy[/h]

Syfy orders Superman prequel TV show Krypton to series. With the rise in popularity of comic book superhero movies, the genre has also found plenty of success on television. The CW has expanded their DC TV universe to include four separate superhero shows – Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl – with the network recently ordering a fifth to series in Black Lightning. Fox has also found success with DC Comics series Gotham and Lucifer, while Marvel TV has set up television shows at ABC, Netflix, Hulu, and Freeform.
Another DC Comics project that has been in development for some time is Krypton, created by The Dark Knight and Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer. The project has been in development at Syfy, with the network ordering a Krypton pilot last spring and casting announcements arriving in the fall. Now, after mysterious teasers surfaced for the Krypton pilot earlier this year, Syfy has officially granted the show a series order.
The Wrap is reporting that Syfy has ordered Krypton and two other pilots to series. Though it’s unclear when Krypton or the other series are expected to premiere, Syfy is launching a brand reboot on June 19. The network also released an official description of Krypton:

Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, KRYPTON follows Superman’s grandfather (Cameron Cuffe, “The Halcyon”) — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.

Goyer is serving as executive producer on Krypton and he penned the script for the pilot with Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow, Stargate SG-1), who will also serve as an executive producer as well as the series’ showrunner. Cameron Cuffe stars as Superman’s grandfather Seg-El, and he is joined by Georgina Campbell as Lyta Zod, Ian McElhinney as Seg-El’s grandfather Val-El, Elliot Cowan as Daron-Vex, Ann Ogbomo as Alura Zod, Rasmus Hardiker as Kem, Wallis Day as Nyssa-Vex, and Aaron Pierre as Dev-Em.
As revealed by the Krypton series description and previous reports about the show, it will follow Superman’s Kryptonian ancestors on his home planet generations before it’s destroyed (the event that sets young Kal-El on the path to becoming a superhero on Earth). Additionally, as evidenced by the name of fellow lead character Lyta Zod, Krypton will depict the family of classic Superman villain General Zod.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether Krypton will find success by diving into the history behind the well-known origin story of Superman – especially since even casual comic book fans know what happens to the planet of Krypton. But, with DC film veteran Goyer involved and a boost of confidence from Syfy with this series order, fans will a chance to see Krypton for themselves once the series debuts.

[h=1]Krypton TV Show to Premiere in 2018[/h]

The TV show Krypton will premiere on Syfy at an unspecified point in 2018. DC comics has been enjoying quite a bit of success on television. Arrow is about to conclude its fifth season and spawned the Arrowverse – with The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow all connecting to each other and all renewed for next year. Gotham has also received a renewal, telling the story of how the various heroes and villains of Batman’s story came to be. So it is no surprise that another prequel series is in the works for a popular comic character. Syfy has given a series order to Krypton.
Set on the home planet of both Superman and Supergirl, it was Krypton’s imminent destruction that sent the cousins to Earth. Krypton is generally considered to have been an advanced planet, with incredible scientific achievements and technology. But in spite of all their knowledge and accomplishments, the people of Krypton either could not or simply did not prevent their entire planet from exploding. Only a few escaped the destruction of the planet, many of them making their way to Earth and becoming either heroes or villains when the yellow sun gave them super powers.
While an exact date has not been announced, SyFy has revealed that the new series will premiere some time in 2018, so there is quite a bit of a wait left for fans to anticipate the show. The show’s description is also available:

Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, Krypton follows Superman’s grandfather (Cameron Cuffe, The Halcyon) — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.

Not much of the planet Krypton has been seen on film and television – since the planet’s destruction happened when Clark/Superman was still a baby and generally is used to kick-start his story. More of the planet has been shown though his cousin Kara/Supergirl, who was older when she left. Aside from the late attempts to save the planet made by members of The House of El and the adults sending their children away, most of the filmed knowledge of the planet has come from the image of Jor-El in the fortress of Solitude, and from the Supergirl episode ‘For The Girl Who Has Everything’ where Kara was trapped in a fantasy on Krypton.
As the comic’s fans know, much of Krypton’s description and story has changed over the years, giving the writers of Krypton many different elements and options to take for their story. The planet is home to many strange and wondrous creatures and stunning landscapes who will hopefully be shown, as well as marvelous technologies only dreamed of here on Earth. The one big consistent is that the planet has a red sun. Since Kryptonians get their superpowers from the radiation of our yellow sun, this is not going to be a series about people flying around and saving the day. The characters on Krypton will not be powerful heroes, which should ironically make this series a very human story.

[h=1]Krypton TV Series Finds Its Adam Strange[/h]

It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 that SYFY’s Superman prequel series Krypton would add DC superhero Adam Strange to the show. We now know that the character will be played by Shaun Sipos, who has appeared in Melrose Place, The Vampire Diaries, and Life Unexpected.
Officially announced in 2014 and developed by David S. Goyer and Damian Kindler, Krypton takes place on the home planet of Superman two generations before its destruction. The show will follow the story of Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) who has to fight to redeem the honor of his family, the House of El. The series will also explore a present-day conspiracy to prevent the birth of Superman.

Deadline reports that Canadian actor Shaun Sipos has been cast in the series regular role of Adam Strange. Krypton‘s version of the character is described as a “world-weary human, who finds himself stranded on Krypton as the unlikely mentor to Seg-El, Superman’s grandfather.”

Adam Strange has a long history in DC Comics, having been introduced in an issue of the anthology series Showcase in 1957. Though a character in a comic book world of superheroes, Strange was less of a Batman or Superman and more of a science-fiction hero in the style of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.
The character was a human archaelogist who was transported to Rann, an alien planet in desperate need of protection from extraterrestrial threats. As the hero of Rann, Strange wore a red helmet, a suit equipped with a jet pack, and carried an energy gun. While on the planet, Strange fell in love with a Alanna, the daughter of the planet’s greatest scientist. Strange later became more relevant to the DC Universe when he began guest-starring in other prominent comic book titles such as Justice League, Swamp Thing, and Hawkman.
Since Adam Strange had no connection to Krypton in the comics, it’s possible that this version of the character is a very loose adaptation of the sci-fi hero, or it could be that his story has been altered so that he is teleported to Krypton instead of Rann.
Strange’s role in Krpyton has been known since SDCC, when it was announced that several DC characters would also appear on the show in some capacity. Superman villains Brainiac and Doomsday are also set to appear, along with JLA member Hawkgirl.

[h=1]Krypton TV Series Casts Brainiac & Superman’s Great-Grandmother[/h]

Da Vinci’s Demons actor Blake Ritson has been cast in SyFy’s Krypton as the classic Superman villain, Brainiac. This will be the second live-action version of Brainiac, with the first appearing in Smallville, played by James Marsters.
Developed by David S. Goyer and Damian Kindler, Krypton takes viewers to the home planet of Superman, two generations before its destruction. The series will follow the story of Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), who must fight to redeem the honor of his family, the House of El, after it was ostracized and shamed. Seg-El will struggle to save his world from chaos in the past, while the series also explores a present-day conspiracy to prevent the birth of Superman.
[h=3]

Deadline
is reporting that both Ray Donovan actor Paula Malcomson and Ritson have been cast in Krypton. Ritson will play Brainiac, described as “a parasitic, hyper-advanced alien android of immense intelligence,” while Malcomson will play Charys, the matriarch of the House of El. According to Deadline, “Charys helps her son Seg navigate the treacherous pitfalls of Kandor City, their Kryptonian home embattled with oppression and revolt.”[/h]

It was announced by DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 that two prominent members of Superman’s rogues’ gallery, Brainiac and Doomsday, would appear on Krypton. Johns revealed that Brainiac would serve as one of the show’s primary antagonists. It was suggested at the panel that Brainiac would play a role in the modern-day portion of the story that revolves around the conspiracy to prevent Superman’s birth. If true, Brainiac could be the character that ties together the past and present in the series.
Brainiac is a character with a deep, complex history in DC Comics that goes all the way back to Action Comics #242 in 1958. Brainiac is typically portrayed as an android from the planet Colu with green skin and a supercomputer for a brain. However, there have been multiple iterations of the character, making it difficult to say what we should expect from Ritson’s Brainiac.
Aside from Brainiac and Doomsday, numerous DC characters will appear on the show. Science fiction hero Adam Strange will be played by Shaun Sipos. JLA member Hawkgirl is also set to appear.

Krypton Producer Has ‘7-to-8-Year Plan’ For the Series Krypton may have yet to hit the airwaves, but the series already has a narrative blueprint that could lead to at least seven years worth of story for the show. The upcoming Syfy series developed by David S. Goyer and Damian Kindler focuses on Superman’s home planet long before it was obliterated, which is really just as much as we know about that famed world. The Man of Steel’s grandfather, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), takes center stage as he attempts to save the reputation of his family, the House of El, after they were ostracized and shamed. It also touches on the subject of Kal-El’s fate by introducing DC hero Adam Strange through time travel.Speaking at the 2018 TCAs (via Syfy), folks behind the new series such as showrunner Cameron Welsh, executive producers Goyer and Geoff Johns, plus lead star Cuffe teased about what we can expect from Krypton. Apparently, the series already has “roughly have a seven-to-eight-year plan.” “This is an untold story and time travel is involved. History could be changed and what happens in this story can be very different from the backstory people know,” Goyer added.Welsh said Krypton is detached from the rest of the main DC franchise. And it being an “untold story and fertile ground” gives the show creative liberties to carve their own narrative without being shackled to what has already been established before. In fact, it’s even possible that they introduce their own Doomsday, hopefully, one that is more menacing and useful than the huge CGI monster we have seen in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Although speculation suggests we haven’t seen the real version yet, and the iteration that the Zack Snyder film had was inorganically made by Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg).Of course, whatever grand plan that Goyer, Welsh, and Johns have for Krypton won’t matter if its pilot is poorly received. How many times have we heard execs talk about something long term only to not see any of those come to fruition because the series was canceled even before some of the plot points introduced find any resolution? At the end of the day, this new endeavor’s future largely hinges on people’s reception. While the premise is definitely interesting, what remains to be seen is how they will spin this show in a way that is separated enough to the Superman we know that it can stand on its own.Krypton debuts on Wednesday, March 21 on Syfy.Source: TCA (via Syfy)

[h=1]Krypton: Green Lanterns & Omega Men Could Join the TV Show[/h]

Krypton showrunner Cameron Welsh says the Green Lantern Corps would be a “natural fit” for the Superman prequel series. The science fiction TV show already incorporates characters outside the Superman mythology, such as the time-traveling hero Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos). Hawkgirl is set to appear at some point in the future, too.
Developed by Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer and Damien Kindler, Syfy’s Krypton is set on Superman’s home planet two generations before his birth. The series follows the life of Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), as he fights to redeem the honor of his family. Seg-El must also contend with the coming of Brainiac, one of Superman’s oldest villains. Described as the “collector of worlds,” Brainiac is on his way to destroy Krypton in an effort to erase the Man of Steel from existence. Seg-El is warned of this conspiracy by Adam Strange, who has traveled from Earth to Krypton to preserve Superman’s legacy.

At the Krypton panel at WonderCon (via IGN), Welsh talked about his plans for the series, which include going to Earth and the possibility of exploring other planets like Thanagar and Rann. In response to a fan’s question about the chances of the Green Lantern Corps appearing on Krypton, Welsh said “That’s something that would be a natural fit for us”. DC Entertainment Vice President Dan Evans claimed that the Omega Man could actually appear on the series prior to the introduction of the Green Lanterns.

Like the Green Lantern Corps, the Omega Men are a cosmic team of superheroes. Counted among the latest iteration of the group is Kyle Rayner, one of the most prominent heroes to carry the “Green Lantern” name.
As a cosmic force tasked with patrolling the universe, the Green Lantern Corps does indeed seem like it would be a “natural fit” for the science fiction series. In fact, if they exist as a part of Krypton‘s universe, their presence in the story could become necessary, considering the threat posed by Brainiac. In the series premiere, Adam Strange explains that Brainiac has conquered numerous civilizations and has killed billions of people, which means that he’s definitely something the Green Lantern Corps would be aware of. It would be interesting to see how the Kryptonian government would respond to alien interference – considering that the people of Krypton currently reject the existence of alien life.
The main obstacle in getting the cosmic superhero team on Krypton would be the upcoming Green Lantern Corps film, which is still in development. Some DC characters, like Arrow‘s Deathstroke, are off-limits depending on whether or not they’re set to be featured in a film. It should also be noted that Krypton writer and co-creator David S. Goyer has been working on the script for Green Lantern Corps.

[h=1]Krypton Renewed For Season 2 At SYFY[/h]

With the season 1 finale of Krypton just a day away, SYFY announces that the Superman prequel series has officially been renewed for a second season. The news isn’t much of a surprise as the series has pulled in good ratings for the cable channel, becoming “the most-watched season for any scripted series on the network since Defiance in 2015.” In addition, the series has been mostly well received by critics, as it managed to offer up an intriguing twist on the usual prequel series by throwing in a time travel element that introduced high stakes normally absent from such stories.
It also didn’t hurt that Krypton gave viewers the chance to see certain DC Comics characters in a new light and in a new context. Though the series revolves around Superman’s grandfather Seg-El, and his fight to save his world from not not only alien invaders but also individuals who may one day lead Krypton to its doom, it has also introduced the likes of Adam Strange, Zod, Brainiac, and Doomsday. The result has been a surprisingly well made first season that has a lot to offer DC fans.

With former Arrow co-star Colin Salmon stepping in as a time-traveling Zod and Blake Ritson delivering a take on Brainiac that’s not only terrifying but is also a faithful adaptation of how the character is presented in the comics, the show has a lot of offer on the villain side of things. But to the series' credit, it’s actually managed to make compelling characters out of both villains, playing up their importance to the future Man of Steel’s storyline while allowing them a chance to make a name for themselves in the past — whether they belong there or not.

The series’ renewal is likely welcome news for fans who’ve become invested in Krypton over the first season, but may have been reluctant to get too attached, especially after the disappointing news that SYFY had canceled The Expanse after three seasons. Though it looks like the space-faring series might have a fighting chance at Amazon, SYFY is ready to move on with more comic book adaptations, like a second season for Happy! as well as the upcoming Deadly Class, which not only adapts the comic of the same name from Rick Remender, but is executive produced by the Russo brothers, who directed a film you may have heard about: Avengers: Infinity War.

Things are looking pretty good for SYFY at the moment, as the channel is not only ready to deliver the fourth and final season of 12 Monkeys, but also has a fourth season of The Magicians on the way, as well as Nightflyers, a spooky science fiction story adapted from the novella of the same name by George R.R. Martin. With a lineup like that, it looks likeKrypton season 2 will be in some very good company.

[h=1]Syfy Casts Lobo Actor for Krypton Season 2[/h]

Emmett J. Scanlan is joining Krypton as Lobo. Syfy dove into the superhero TV show frenzy recently with the Superman prequel series Krypton. The series focuses on the Man of Steel's grandfather Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) and the inner-workings of Krypton. The show had a successful first season, which allowed Syfy to bring it back for a second season. Details on what it coming next have been hard to come by, but the season finale did set up the show for a big future with Zod and Doomsday.
During the development of the second season, though, the big tease for what is coming next pertains to the addition of DC villain Lobo. The producers announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Lobo would be introduced in season 2, but no actor had yet been cast in the role.

THR has revealed who will get to play Lobo in season 2 of Krypton. Emmett J. Scanlan is joining the cast of the show as the Main Man himself. There's no word on what brings the bounty hunter to Krypton at this point in time. Scanlan has a long career in TV with shows like Hollyoaks and The Fall. But, he's also no stranger to superhero properties. He had a small role in Guardians of the Galaxy and appeared twice in Constantine. Now, he'll get a much bigger character to make his own.

Lobo is the last known Czarnian in all of the universe in traditional DC comics lore. He first debuted in Omega Men #3 in 1983 when he was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen. He didn't get much attention initially, before he was redesigned in the 90s as a space biker. The new interpretation of Lobo helped him become the beloved anti-hero he is today for DC fans.

Thanks to this unique sense of comedy and violent tendencies - not to mention his eye-catching look - Lobo has left an impression on DC fans for years, but this will be his first appearance in a live-action setting. Scanlan has the physical tools to step onto Krypton's set and bring the physically imposing mercenary to the screen. It remains to be seen just how much of Lobo the show will feature next or in what capacity he will be used. Krypton's showrunner Cameron Welsh previously explained
why they wanted to bring Lobo to the series, noting the grounded approach they'll bring while staying true to who he is. We'll have to wait until season 2 returns to see how successful they are in achieving this goal, but at least Krypton finally has its Lobo.

Krypton season 2 will air on Syfy sometime in 2019.
