Warner Bros. is developing a movie about the origin story for The Joker that will not be part of the DC Extended Universe. WB is only a few years into launching the DCEU and has done so to varying levels of success. Financially, the films have been box office hits, while the critical reception had been mixed at best, prior to Wonder Woman‘s success. The studio has no intentions on stopping the DCEU or its lineup, and has several projects currently in development with release dates staked out till 2020.
But, the DCEU is not enough for the studio. WB is now intent on creating a new banner of the studio that will further explore the DC Comics characters at their disposal in new and interesting ways. To kick this off, an origin story for Batman’s most iconic villain is in store.

Deadline is reporting that The Joker will be the first film to come out of this new banner and has already lined up a director, writers, and one mega producer. The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips will direct the origin film with 8 Mile‘s Scott Silver co-writing alongside him. They will be backed by none other than Martin Scorsese as a producer, but THR cautions his involvement is still fluid. The film will star a new actor in the role, with this report pointing to a possible 1980s setting.

Moviegoing audiences have already seen three live-action portrayals of Joker, with Jared Leto’s being the most recent and controversial, but none have explored the character in this way – especially not with him being the focal point. What makes this film even more intriguing is it not being attached to the DCEU. This will allow the creatives involved to tell truly original and standalone films that take characters in drastically different directions than the main DCEU story, almost like the Red Son Superman movie Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is keen on.

With so many shared universes popping up in Hollywood, this is one way for WB to keep their comic book movie lineup fresh and different. Even though the clamor for a Joker origin story may not be there now, the possibilities that WB would have with this new banner are unlimited. They would have the freedom to tell any story they desired and take a similar approach to their Elseworld comics. The lack of continuity holds the potential for something new, but also creates the chance for confusion.
The question still remains why they would launch this idea with a Joker film that is already being criticized. A Joker origin story is not something many comic fans want to know, and it is an odd move to make with the DCEU finally hitting its stride. It will undoubtedly be confusing for many to see a young Joker film one year and then see Leto reprise the role with a different take in a different universe soon after. Recasting Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and so on for these films would also be surprising, possibly eliminating them from these stories.
Clearly, this announcement raises a lot of questions, but also presents WB and DC’s characters with plenty of possibilities. With The Joker just starting to be developed, it may be some time before we start to learn more.

[h=1]The Walking Dead Actor Wants to Star in Joker Origin Movie[/h]

Actor Steven Ogg has expressed his eagerness to play Batman’s arch nemesis in the DC Extended Universe-separate The Joker standalone film from Warner Bros. Best known for his recurring role in The Walking Dead from season 6 – 7 and finally becoming a mainstay moving forward in the show’s upcoming eighth season as one of Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) most loyal followers, the Canadian thespian has been doing work for the small, as well as, big screen and even dabbled a bit in video games. But nabbing the lead part in one of the most intriguing superhero films could definitely catapult his acting career to greater heights.
Since news broke that Warner Bros. is exploring their DC superhero options outside of the DCEU, fans were shocked and confused about what the film studio is trying to do. Skepticism quickly clouded the project as it could undermine the recent massive success of Wonder Woman and the potential of Justice League and Aquaman if this separate pocket of DC film series kicks off. That said, with a talent like Martin Scorsese attached to produce the film and The Hangover director Todd Phillips set to direct, viewers arguably become more accepting of the idea and actors get interested in partaking in the production – including Ogg.

Speaking to CinemaBlend while promoting the upcoming season 7 Blu-ray release of The Walking Dead, the actor shared that he is down to take on the Architect of Anarchy in his upcoming solo movie:
“It’d be fun. I mean, it seems to screw everyone up, whoever does it. They end up going a bit crazy, except if you look at Nicholson’s Joker. But what I was reading, and I’d love to do it, is the younger, like ‘how The Joker became The Joker’ is what they’re working on. So I’d assume it would be a younger person. But that type of character, there certainly would be a lot of interesting things to explore with him. I would love to do my own different take on it, on him. So yeah, if you’re offering it to me, I’ll take it.”

Despite all these talks about a separate Joker film, Jared Leto, who has been previously established as the DCEU’s version of the mad clown will still continue to play his role from last year’s Suicide Squad. While no official announcements have been made, he is expected to star opposite Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the Joker/Harley spin-off from Crazy, Stupid, Love directors, as well as, another appearance in the fast-tracked Suicide Squad sequel.
As of now, there are still a lot of unanswered questions regarding the plannedJoker film. And arguably, while casting is obviously going to be a huge part on how people will receive this separate iteration of the character, other narrative aspects of the project are still very much unclear. It remains to be seen whether a separate Batman will be introduced (a pretty controversial idea given persistent rumors of Ben Affleck wanting out of his DCEU role) given how tightly integrated the characters’ stories are, as well as, what the long term implication of this standalone to the DCEU will be if it becomes a massive success.

[h=1]Rumor: Joker Origin Movie Will Be ‘Super Dark & Real’[/h]

Warner Bros.’ recently announced Joker origin film may feature Batman’s classic foe in a dark and realistic way, and as a kid. With the DCEU still riding high off Wonder Woman‘s success and looking forward to a Joss Whedon-assisted Justice League in the fall, the studio has made the surprising move to create DC films outside of it’s already established shared universe. The studio plans to begin with a Joker origin film, making it a project to keep an eye on, as it will star a new actor in the role, be directed by Todd Phillips, and supposedly produced by Martin Scorsese.
The all-new origin story is believed to take place in the 1980s, and be “a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film”. As is usually the case with rumors, a new one recently lined up with this assessment, and also managed to tease a look far back into Joker’s past.
[h=3]Related: How DC Movies Can Have 3 JOKERS Like DC Rebirth[/h]MMA fighter-turned-actor Brendan Schaub was recently a guest on Joe Rogen Experience (via Batman-News) and during the interview, the topic of the Joker origin film was brought up. Schaub, citing second-hand information from Todd Phillips’ agent, Todd Feldman, shared what he’d heard about the project. (Obviously this means the information should be taken only with a grain of salt, and while there is no proof whatsoever that this is the direction the film will take, it does make for some fun conjecture.)

“My boy Todd Feldman put this together with Todd Phillips. It’s dark. It’s like a dark Joker. As a kid, he had a permanent smile and everyone made fun of him. It’s like on the streets of Brooklyn. It’s super dark and real.”

Again, given the degrees of separation at play here, Schaub’s little tidbit is closer to an urban myth than an inside scoop on a movie that’s currently in the earliest stages of development. Still, making Joker a victim of bullying could raise some eyebrows. Following a bullied kid’s rise to become a psychotic killer and crime lord could make it a lightning rod for controversy, or it may result in the character being portrayed in a somewhat sympathetic light, which Joker is not.
Concerns over the necessity of a Joker origin film are valid, but the character’s earlier days have been explored to some success in the comics, making this concept not nearly as outlandish as it seems.

[h=1]What Leonardo DiCaprio Could Look Like As Joker[/h]

In the wake of the news that Leonardo DiCaprio starring in the Joker origin movie would be Warner Bros.’ pip-dream, digital artist BossLogic has delivered a fan art rendering – giving us a better idea of what Leo as the psychopath comic book villain could look like.
DiCaprio is one of the biggest actors in Hollywood, an extremely recognizable face that’s become synonymous with quality performances and projects. Therefore, when the news broke that he’s the “dream pick” for the Joker origin movie that Warner Brothers and DC are working on, there were mixed reactions. For one, the film might be produced by Martin Scorsese, who is Leo’s go-to director since the two worked together on Gangs of New York in 2002. Plus, DiCaprio has shown himself to be a versatile actor through the years, making him a not-too-outlandish choice for the role. But is it possible that he’s too famous for the role, given how important it is that audiences see the Joker as a harbinger of destruction and not just another actor playing the character?

If you’re having a little trouble visualizing what DiCaprio as the Joker would look like, famed digital artist Boss Logic has put together a bit of concept rendering of what Leo would look like as the Clown Prince of Crime. Courtesy of Comic Book, BossLogic’s take on the potential casting (see the image below) mixes several of the previous iterations of the character. All made-up and psychopathically evil, DiCaprio looks like an amalgamation of the other adaptations of the infamous villain that have come before him.

At first glance, the rendering most evokes the menace and anarchist look of Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight, right down to the colors used to bring the image to life. It’s important to note that their are several differences, as the hairstyle is more in line with the comic book character or even Suicide Squad’sversion played by Jared Leto. The creepy smile in the image certainly evokes classic Joker.
It’s important to note that this DiCaprio news came courtesy of a feature piece by The Hollywood Reporter and is not official news, but merely insider talk about the studio’s intention. The chances of DiCaprio joining the project are “slim to none,” and in fact, Scorsese is not officially attached to the project yet either. What we do know about the Joker origin story for sure is that it’s set to be be directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover trilogy, War Dogs) and is separate from the DC Extended Universe. There are many fans weary of the idea already, and others may well be confused by the out-of-universe approach. Still, keep checking Screen Rant for more news on this Joker origin film, including who Warner Brothers is able to actually land for the lead role.

[h=1]Jared Leto Reacts to Joker Origin Movie, Teases His DCEU Future[/h]

Jared Leto has commented on Warner Bros. developing a new Joker film that will not feature him. The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman debuted as the Clown of Prince of Crime in David Ayer’s anti-hero ensemble film, Suicide Squad, last year. Unfortunately despite Leto’s method-acting technique and the impressive resume he has, DC fans were not exactly thrilled by his portrayal. Since then, rumors of his future as the supervillain have started to spread, which got worse when news of the separate project about the character broke.
Not much is known regarding the production for the isolated Joker movie but a lot of big industry names are attached to it. Prolific filmmaker Martin Scorsese is being courted to produce the film while The Hangover director Todd Phillips is set to helm. No actor has been announced to take on the role, but recent reports claim A-list actor Leonardo DiCaprio is Warner Bros’ dream casting. With a talent roster like this, it’s no surprise that some fans are excited about the project. However, it poses a lot of other questions regarding how the project will affect the already existing DC Extended Universe, specifically Leto’s ongoing stint as the Joker.

While attending the Destiny 2 launch hosted by Bungie and covered by ODE, the 45-year-old singer/actor shared his candid thoughts with regard to the other Joker project and just like everybody else, he also seems to be clueless how everything is supposed to pan out:
“I’m a little confused too, but yeah, there are a couple of things happening in the DC world and I loved the Joker, he’s a great character, a really fun character to play. It’s a big universe and when you play the Joker, there’s no ownership there. You have the honor of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off. But there are other films in development and I’m excited to see what comes from them.”

Then again, we are talking about an Academy Award winning actor so it really is hard to decipher whether what he has said is his true comments about the ongoing commotion regarding the other Joker film or not. Earlier reports suggested that Leto was caught off guard when news of the other Joker film broke, but is committed to reprising his role in more films moving forward. Thus far, he is expected to appear in the Joker/Harley spin-off opposite Margot Robbie, from directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love), as well as, another appearance in the fast-tracked Suicide Squad sequel and Gotham City Sirens.
In hindsight, it is unfair for Leto’s performance to be judged with just one outing. Usually, even one whole film is not enough to gauge how one actor could play a role, (case in point: James Bond) let alone with very limited screen time that could only amount to a small part in an already packed movie. It would be great if he is given more opportunities that are meant to help show off his acting skills rather than just peppering him in a movie that does not give him enough space to maneuver.
At this point, the Joker origin film is still very much a mystery, even for those who are already working with Warner Bros. – like Leto. It is important to note, however, that amidst all of this, no official announcement has been released by the film studio so it is better to sit back and watch this whole thing to unfold before getting attached to any of the speculations and jump to conclusions.

[h=1]Darren Aronofsky: Joker Origin Movie Resembles His Batman Pitch[/h]

Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky recently revealed Warner Bros’ Joker origin film sounds very similar to his early pitch of a Batman movie. Last month, news broke that Warner Bros. is developing a Joker standalone movie that would be separate from the already existing DC Extended Universe. The report quickly garnered interest from fans not just because it would be the supervillain’s first standalone film, but because acclaimed filmmakers are attached to the project. The Hangover and War Dogs director Todd Phillips will helm, while Martin Scorsese may potentially produce the film. It’s not clear how the studio will promote the movie separate from their existing banner, or how it will affect the DCEU moving forward, but latest intel on the Joker project suggests it will be very dark and gritty.
Aronofsky is currently at the center of attention with his latest project mother!, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem getting critical praise ahead of its wide release this Friday. But while all eyes are on his current gig, it did not miss the director’s attention that some of his earlier concepts for a Caped Crusader standalone could possibly be used, ironically, for his arch nemesis’ proposed film.

While doing press for mother!, Aronofsky was asked by First Showing about his known previous attachment to a shelved Batman project dubbed Batman: Year One, a collaboration he did with Frank Miller. The version of Batman’s story is a little different from the comic book origins – Bruce Wayne is a homeless, orphaned boy, adopted by Big Al who grows up to fight crime wearing a ski mask, cape and brass knuckles:

“You know what, I think it’s finally… I think we were basically – whatever it is – 15 years too early. Because I hear the way they’re talking about the Joker movie and that’s exactly – that was my pitch. I was like: we’re going to shoot in East Detroit and East New York. We’re not building Gotham. The Batmobile – I wanted to be a Lincoln Continental with two bus engines in it.”

Despite his early Batman concept not coming to fruition, Aronofsky added that some bits and pieces from his darker version eventually made it to the big screen via other projects, particularly Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice:
“Some of my ideas got out there through other films. Like the ring with “BW”, Bruce Wayne’s ring making the scar was our idea and I think that was in Zack’s or something. Which is fine, you write these ideas and they get out. We were all about reinventing it and trying to make it more Taxi Driver visceral. That was the whole pitch. But the toy people were like, “Oh it can’t be a Lincoln Continental, you have to make a Batmobile.”

Aronofsky’s comments do not seem to be intended to bash Warner Bros. or Snyder. It simply is an acknowledgment that some of his concepts have been adapted by other filmmakers in other projects. That said, it is interesting to wonder how Batman would be perceived now if his Year One project was greenlighted more than a decade ago. While there have been various iterations of the Bat of Gotham in film and other media, his origin story has remained the same all throughout.

[h=1]First Draft of The Joker Script Expected Next Week, May Shoot in 2018[/h]

New intel claims the script for The Joker origin movie is expected to be turned in next week, indicating filming may start in 2018. Separate from the already existing DC Extended Universe, the Warner Bros. film is developing at an unusual speed as it has only been a few weeks since news broke of The Joker origin movie being in development at the studio in the first place.
With The Hangover and War Dogs director Todd Phillips on board to direct, and critically-acclaimed veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese reportedly interested in the project, it’s hard not to get excited for the film. Reports suggest it would trace the history of the Clown Prince of Crime as a bullied child who would still strive to keep an optimistic perspective, which is obviously very different from the Joker fans know. So we can expect a slew of events that would factor in his turn to the dark side, perpetuating rumors that it would be a very dark and gritty movie.
[h=4]The latest report comes from Variety’s Justin Kroll, who broke the news via his official Twitter account. Without name dropping any sources, he shared an update on Warner Bros’ Joker origin movie.[/h]

This may come as a surprise considering that when word of the project first came out, it sounded like everything was still fluid – even Scorsese’s involvement. And now, the first draft of the script is apparently being finished, which makes us curious about when Warner Bros. really started developing the movie. Most importantly, will this be another case of a rushed job, like Suicide Squad, which writer/director David Ayer only had few weeks to pen. The end result of that production wasn’t entirely successful, ut and it would be a gamble to risk having the same thing happen to one of DC’s most iconic characters, especially when it is supposed to launch a brand new film series.
At this point, we do not know what exactly Warner Bros. is aiming for with this Joker origin story film or for this DCEU-separate banner. But if Kroll’s tip holds true, the project’s fast-tracking is an indication that the film studio is up to something with regard to this. Lest we forget, however, that despite the fact that Jason Momoa and Jame Wan’s Aquaman is the only DC-film slated for release next year, there are other previously announced movies under their superhero cinematic universe that will be in various stages of development. Shazam! is slated to kickoff principal photography next year and a slew of films that already have release dates are expected to also start pre-production, like Wonder Woman 2.
Additionally, the nagging question regarding Jared Leto’s future as the Joker still begs answers. When asked regarding the separate origin story featuring the character but without him, the Academy Award-winning actor seems as confused as everyone else. He previously shared that he is committed to reprising his role in more films moving forward including the Joker/Harley spinoff opposite Margot Robbie, from directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love), the fast-tracked Suicide Squad sequel and Gotham City Sirens.

[h=1]DC Confirms Joker Origin Movie is Separate From the DCEU[/h]

It has now been confirmed that DC’s in-development Joker origins movie will be separate from the DC Extended Universe film continuity. Last month, news broke out that Warner Bros. and DC are working on a film that will explore the Clown Prince of Crime’s backstory. The caveat? It will not feature the version of the supervillain played by Jared Leto in the DCEU and will otherwise be unconnected to the current series of live-action DC Comics movie adaptations.
Despite the initial confusion brought about by the news, the potential of the unknown Joker-centered project quickly piqued the interest of fans. The Hangover and War Dogs director Todd Phillips is attached to co-write and direct the film, with Martin Scorsese in talks to produce. Although WB’s pipe dream about Leonardo DiCaprio starring in the Joker origins movie is highly unlikely to become a reality, production on the film is nevertheless expected to start as early as next year. Thanks to Johns, we also now have some official insight on the project’s status.

During an extensive interview with Vulture regarding the future of WB and DC’s upcoming movie slate, it was confirmed that the Joker origins film will be part of a new offshoot banner that does not, in any way, connect with the other films from the DCEU slate. Instead, they will be independent films that will open up opportunities for great standalone DC Comics adaptations to be made instead. Johns added that the official title of this DC film side label will be revealed “soon-ish.”

This new information gives us more confidence about the project, as it seems like Johns and his WB/DC cohorts have a concrete plan regarding the Joker origins film and the new DC movie line that it will help launch. The company has received heat before for supposedly fast-tracking their DCEU projects to catch up on Marvel’s Marvel Cinematic Universe’ success. This upcoming plan, however, proves otherwise and is definitely a good move on their part, as it gives them the opportunity to be a pioneer of something different rather than just be a mere follower of other’s business formula. Meanwhile, from fans’ perspective, this could also mean great things ahead, offering a fresher approach to keeping the comic book/superhero movie genre alive and going strong.
How Johns and WB spin this new side label featuring the Joker origins film still remains to be seen. From the sound of it though, an announcement is imminent, which will hopefully give us an insight on how they are planning to effectively have the upcoming line and the DCEU exist simultaneously but separately, without confusing audiences.

[h=1]DC’s Joker Origin Movie Features Joker As A Failed ’80s Comedian[/h]

Warner Bros.’Joker origin movie will introduce him as a failed comedian in the 1980s. While the studio is still working on expanding their DC Comics-based shared universe, they’re not shying away from making other, non-connected DC films. For instance, they’re continuing to stay in the animated space with Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, to further appeal to kids. They’re also looking to branch out further by telling the Clown Prince of Crime’s origin story.
The upcoming film is being directed by The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips from a script by 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver, with acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese on board to produce. It was just recently that reports of Joaquin Phoenix circling the role surfaced, but nothing has officially come out of those talks just yet. In fact, it was only a few days ago that Phoenix seemed to indicate that he had no idea the Joker origin movie even existed. Despite that, the first real details on Joker’s origin movie has been revealed, though it’s not much of a surprise.

The Wrap reports Todd Phillips and Scott Silver’s take on the iconic Batman villain sees him as a failed comedian in an ’80s Gotham. The story update shouldn’t be much of a surprise to comic book fans of the character who’ve read one of Joker’s many origin stories in The Killing Joke. But what’s interesting is that the movie will reportedly also take inspiration from Scorsese’s King of Comedy film starring Robert De Niro, whose character is also a failed comedian.

As mentioned, outside of Scorsese’s own previous work, the failed comedian origin is one that was previously used in Alan Moore’s famous Batman: The Killing Joke graphic novel. In that version of Joker’s beginnings, he leaves behind a steady job as an engineer to pursue his dream of becoming a comedian. It isn’t until he fails miserably that everything in his life falls apart. Eventually, he becomes wrapped up in a plot to rob his former employer but flees the scene after his wife dies and Batman shows up to thwart the robbery. That’s when the Joker falls into a chemical vat, thus leaving his skin bleached, with bright red lips and green hair. That’s when he becomes the Joker.
Since that’s just one of many comic origins for the character, there’s no telling what changes Phillips and Silver could make for the film. They could just loosely adapt the comic, but such inspiration also raises questions over what the film’s focus and tone would be. Since Phillips comes from a comedy background, could this approach point to a film that actually has a great deal of humor? Previous reports said that the Joker origin movie would be “super dark and real.”Additionally, its still unclear how much of an “origin” movie this will be. They could probably stretch this out over an entire film – ending it with the turn – or this could just be the first-half that leads to the Joker actually climbing the criminal ranks in Gotham. As the Joker origin movie moves closer to production this May, hopefully more details will come out.

[h=1]Todd Phillips’ Joker Origin Movie is a Dark Knight Prequel[/h]

Want to find out how he got those scars? Well, you’re going to. The Todd Phillips-directed, Martin Scorsese-produced Joker origin film is, in fact, a prequel to The Dark Knight, exploring how Heath Ledger’s incomparable version of the Clown Prince of Crime came to be.
Out of all the projects currently in the pipeline at DC Films, perhaps the most intriguing is the Joker standalone movie. Not part of the DCEU but the first in what could be an expanding “Elseworlds-style” banner, it will chart the origins of the Joker in 1980s Gotham, evoking the crime films of producer Martin Scorsese. It’s been repeatedly rumored that Joaquin Phoenix is the frontrunner for the role, but all that’s known plotwise is that it will tell a story akin to Scorsese’s The King of Comedy and Alan Moore’s icon Joker alt-origin, The Killing Joke. However, that won’t be the only thing familiar.
Related: Scorsese’s Joker Can Make The Killing Joke Relevant Again
On Friday, Warner Bros. released an updated production slate of movies intended for internal use that included an “UNTITLED JOKER ORIGIN MOVIE” – the first official word by the studio the project is in development – that confirms Phillips and Scorsese’s involvement. However, what’s really interesting is the plot synopsis, which reveals it’s actually a prequel to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight:
20 years before Batman saved the city in THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY, Gotham was a dangerous place. In the crime-ridden Narrows, one man tries to escape his unfortunate lot through a passion for theatrics and stand-up comedy. However, one bad day is all it takes in this city, and soon the well-meaning man has become the most dangerous criminal of all: the Joker. Directed by Academy Award Nominee Todd Phillips (WAR DOGS) and produced by Academy Award Winner Martin Scorsese (GOODFELLAS), this prequel to Academy Award Nominee Christopher Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT will explore how the Clown Prince of Crime came to be.

Yes, you read that right: Scorsese’s Joker is actually part of Nolan’s Dark Knight universe. This had been rumored in film circles for the past couple of months, but no confirmation had been found until now. It’s worth pointing out – albeit of lesser importance – that this synopsis would seem to confirm that the film will be lifting heavily from The Killing Joke; “one bad day” is at the center of the Joker’s manic ramblings.
This news is sure to be controversial in DC fans circles and beyond. One of the most beloved elements of Heath Ledger’s Joker is his “multiple choice” origin, with each telling mixing up how he got his disfiguring facial scars (while one popular fan theory suggests he was an Iraq vet, fitting of The Dark Knight‘s 2000s setting). This origin film would by design provide a definitive solution. It is possible that – in keeping with The Killing Joke – Phillips will choose to present this simple as one dramatized possibility, although nothing official suggests that.
Related: Heath Ledger Wanted To Play The Joker Again After The Dark Knight
Besides unearthing mysteries, there’s a more ethical debate. It had been assumed Ledger’s Joker had been put to rest following the actor’s untimely death before the release of The Dark Knight – he wasn’t even alluded to in The Dark Knight Rises – putting extreme pressure on the filmmakers and whoever is eventually cast in the role.
Speaking of the filmmakers, despite the actual new being buried in a slate sent around the industry – not direct to press – Phillips has responded to the subsequent leak on his Facebook page. Curiously, he makes no mention of casting:
“There have been many iterations of the Joker in his 72-year history, but none have been as iconic or defining as Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning portrayal of the character in The Dark Knight. He captured the imagination of moviegoers with his manic psychosis and unclear past. I am incredibly privileged to be able to explore that history and provide the definitive backstory to one of cinemas greatest icons. We want to do the best to ensure the legacy of Heath and his performance while crafting something surprising for fans of the Clown Prince.”

It’s interesting that there’s no mention of Phoenix. He has been coy in interviews – as is fitting of actors in negotiations, believed to be added proof he is in the running – yet doesn’t seem to be an ideal fit for the Joker presented in the synopsis. The actor is 43 years old, whereas Ledger was only 28 when he played the character, creating something of an inherent timeline issue; assuming Phoenix is playing his own age, the Joker would be in his 60s by the time of The Dark Knight‘s 2008. It’s possible that this will be explored in the movie itself, or the connection is intended to be looser than the synopsis suggests. Of course, it’s most likely that Phoenix isn’t actually in consideration for the role itself. Whoever is playing the part, expect casting soon as the Joker origin is set to start filming in May.
Related: DC Could Have THREE Live-Action Jokers In 2019
What this development does mean is that we could see other characters from The Dark Knight Trilogy appear. Gary Oldman’s Commissioner Gordon is possible, as is Tom Wilkinson’s Carmine Falcone and Richard Brake’s Joe Chill, and there’s an outside chance – depending on the timeline – of Linus Roache and Sarah Stewart as Thomas and Martha Wayne, respectively. All actors would need deaging of some sort, but it would allow for some genuine cohesion between this movie and the “original” trilogy.
It also reveals that DC Films isn’t afraid of returning to presumed “dead” continuities alongside the still-expanding DCEU (which still has Jared Leto as its resident Mr. J). If we’re going to be learning Ledger’s Joker’s origin, what’s to stop a sequel to The Dark Knight Rises with Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Batman Beyond featuring Michael Keaton?

All we know for now is that WB is so serious about the Joker origin, to the point they’re staking the reputation of one of the greatest superhero movies of all time on it. Let’s just hope it’s more The Godfather Part II than Hannibal Rising.
Christopher Nolan declined to comment.

[h=1]Joaquin Phoenix Sees Joker Origin Film as ‘Any Other Movie’[/h]

It may seem to be the role of a lifetime, but Joaquin Phoenix says that playing the Clown Prince of Crime in Warner Bros.’ Joker origin movie would be just like any other part in Hollywood.
While Warner Bros.’ DCEU still orbits Batman as one of the franchise’s biggest characters, director Todd Phillips and producer Martin Scorsese aim to bring the Clown Prince of Crime out of the shadows for a solo movie about the Joker’s origins, one that’s separate from the ongoing shared universe. Over the years, the Joker has been played by many big name actors, and as fans look forward to a new era, Phoenix may be the next in line to take on the iconic role. Although Phoenix has been cagey about the subject, it appears that he’s finally talking about the potential job.

Speaking to Fandango, Joaquin Phoenix breaks his silence on the Joker role and what it would be like to play the iconic Batman villain:

I see it as any other movie. I wouldn’t say…’I won’t do Westerns.’ It depends on what it is. I don’t really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that’s what you want to do. So I wouldn’t say, hands down, no – I wouldn’t do that kind of movie. There are things where I’ve flirted with the possibility where there was the potential for this to be… something that’s actually interesting to me. But then for whatever reason they never got to that place where everyone else feels the same way. And that’s key. Everyone has to want to explore the same thing or else it just doesn’t f**king work. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t make decisions on budget or things like that – it’s really the filmmaker and the character.”

Introduced back in 1940, the Joker’s origin story have been sporadically explained over the years, but there hasn’t ever been a definitive origin story for the character – and that’s the way comic book fans want it to be. While movies like Tim Burton’s Batman have tried to expand the character’s backstory, other entries like Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight have kept his origins a secret.

Phoenix has always been linked to comic book movies since the big boom of X-Men in 2000, but Joker could be his time to really shine in the genre. Superhero movies are bigger now than they’ve ever been before, and thanks to his impressive roles such as Walk the Line, Gladiator, and Her, it would be a struggle to find someone as qualified for a role like this than Phoenix. Even with the actor being known for a slew of high-profile roles, a Joker movie would be one of his biggest to date and it could propel his career even further.
Considering that Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Mark Hamill have all lent their talents to playing the Joker, Phoenix would be at home amongst the other Hollywood giants. Warner Bros. tried to showcase an edgier version of the character in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, but this is their chance to provide a different perspective on the character that hasn’t been shown on the big screen before. Phoenix is still playing coy on the chances of him playing the Joker, but it seems that the actor is at least (publicly) aware of the project. Only time will tell if he actually takes on the Joker or not, but he better decide soon as the Joker film’s production will reportedly begin this summer.

[h=1]Joaquin Phoenix Joker Movie May Start Filming in September[/h]

The Joker prequel film is set to begin filming this September. Just days ago it was revealed that the movie’s budget would be $55 million and that DC hoped to begin production this fall.
With no less than six movies featuring the Joker currently in development, this one is likely the most anticipated by fans. The movie is set to tackle the Joker’s tragic backstory as a failed comedian, which means it will likely draw at least some inspiration from Alan Moore’s seminal graphic novel, Batman: The Killing Joke. We know that Hangover trilogy helmer Todd Phillips is set to direct and that the legendary Martin Scorsese will be co-producing. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Scott Silver (The Fighter) will be co-writing with Phillips.Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly portraying the Clown Prince of Crime.

Omega Underground reports that the cameras will start rolling in New York City this September. The movie was originally set to begin filming in May, so it’s not too far off schedule, although its budget is smaller than most current comic book adaptations. As for Phoenix, this isn’t the first comic book character that the actor was considered for. He was previously considered for the role of Stephen Strange, which ultimately went to Benedict Cumberbatch.

This origin story will be set in the ‘80s and the film will not be part of the DCEU, but rather another label potentially called DC Dark or DC Black. Phillips’s Joker film will kick off the new label. The DCEU has floundered a little, to say the least, so making movies no longer bound by the continuity of that universe is a smart move on DC’s part. One of several criticisms of the DC Extended Universe is its dark, gritty feel, which the company seems to be distancing themselves from with Aquaman and Shazam! This new label will be a way for DC to tell both kinds of stories.

After Jared Leto’s divisive turn as the Joker in Suicide Squad - a role he is rumored to bereprising in his own solo movie - fans are eager to see what an excellent actor like Phoenix could do with the part. Jack Nicholson’s performance in Tim Burton’s Batman was considered untouchable until Heath Ledger made the character completely his own in The Dark Knight. To be fair to Leto, who is a great actor as well, he was given the rather impossible task of following two incredibly iconic performances, not to mention Mark Hamill and Cesar Romero. Leto’s performance may not have been too well received, but history has proven that the Joker is one character who really lends himself to interpretation. We look forward to seeing Phoenix’s take.

[h=1]Joaquin Phoenix Joker Movie Gets Working Title, More Crew Members[/h]

Todd Phillips' Joker movie now has a working title and is assembling its production crew, ahead of filming beginning this September. The as-yet untitled movie will be the first DC Comics adaptation set outside the continuity of the Justice League cinematic franchise released since Man of Steel hit theaters in 2013. Plot details are understandably scarce at this point, but it has been reported that the film takes place in the 1980s and explores the origins of the Clown Prince of Crime - drawing from aspects of Alan Moore's landmark The Killing Joke comic book, in the process.
More and more reports are now coming in that Phillips' Joker movie will begin shooting this September, with Joaquin Phoenix starring in the lead role. With a script by Phillips and Oscar-nominee Scott Silver (The Fighter) seemingly done and ready for filming, the next step will be to assemble the rest of the cast and production crew. According to the latest update on the project, that process is already well under-way.

THS reports that Phillips' Joker film aims to begin shooting in New York this September and is currently going under the working title Romeo. The site further claims that Phillips has already recruited his War Dogs and The Hangover trilogy cinematographer Lawrence Sher to work on his DC feature, along with production designer Mark Friedberg (Noah, Selma) and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges (Phantom Thread). Phillips and his casting director Shayna Markowitz (Ocean's 8) will be looking to fill out the film's cast over the next couple of months.

It was reported last week that the Joker movie could be released as part of a banner calledDC Dark or DC Black. As that name implies, this non-DCEU label may walk on the darker side thematically and embrace more adult tones or subject matter than its Justice Leaguecounterpart. The DC Dark/Black films will also be less expensive than other DC tentpoles, withPhillips' Joker movie expected to cost "only" $55 million to make. This, in theory, will allow for greater artistic experimentation on DC projects freed from the burden of continuity, similar to how DC Comics' Elseworlds banner functions.
As for the Romeo working title: it could be a reference to the movie's gloomy "love story". Phillips' film will reportedly follow The Killing Joke's lead and portray the Clown Prince of Crime as a failed comedian but a loving family man, who eventually turns to madness when tragedy strikes. However, because the movie isn't a strict adaptation of Moore's controversial comic book, it can improve upon its source material and deliver a compelling origin story for the Joker that avoids the regressive aspects of The Killing Joke. That's the hope for this film, anyway.

[h=1]Joker Origin Film Reportedly Wants Robert De Niro For Supporting Role[/h]

A new batch of character descriptions for the Joker origin movie have reportedly surfaced—along with news that Robert De Niro is being eyed for a part. Despite the mixed reception Jared Leto's Joker got in Suicide Squad, everyone was still shocked when it was announced DC was working on a separate film involving the Crown Prince of Crime that would tell his origin and recast the role. Even more shocking was the reveal that Todd Phillips of the Hangover franchise would be writing and directing, while veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese would wade into the comic book waters and produce.
The Joker origin movie will start filming this fall according to multiple reports, so we'll know a lot more before long. The onset of reveals should also confirm whether Joaquin Phoenix is truly playing the title role, adding to the already surreal production. With so much of the DC film slate up in the air, the fact that this unprecedented project is moving forward is certainly intriguing. And now, another interesting wrinkle has been added.

That Hashtag Show is reporting that Robert De Niro is being eyed for a supporting role in the Joker origin movie. Their sources were able to pass them multiple character descriptions, with it appearing a slew of new players will be invented for the film. De Niro is being considered for the role of Murray Franklin, with the only information known that the role will be 'Male (65-75) Caucasian.' There's no telling if De Niro is even interested in a film like this, but the involvement of Phoenix and long-time collaborator Scorsese will certainly sweeten the deal. Check out the rest of the character descriptions below:

Penny: Supporting female (60-74), Caucasian. Lower class, very attractive in her younger days, still feels that way about herself. But recently her health has started failing, and she's nearly bedridden in her Lower East Side apartment which she shares with her grown son who just moved back home. She's obsessed with her former employer and can't believe that this is what her life has come to, that she has ended up here, like this.
Sophie Dumond: Supporting female (27-34), to play African American or to play Latina. Not beautiful, has a hardness to her, a single mother living on the Lower East Side, doing the best she can, trying to make ends meet; worn out by the grind of the city. She understands how the system is stacked against her and the people in her community, how unjust it all is for them. She's just trying to catch a break.
Randall: Supporting male (40-59), Caucasian. Thinks he's the wisest and most knowledgeable person in any room he's in, tries to present himself as a mentor to everybody, but is really just looking out for himself, burly.
Gary: Supporting male (30-49), any ethnicity to play a dwarf. Randall's best friend, he's good-natured and a buddy to his colleagues at work, one of the only decent people in the whole movie.
Hoyt Vaughn: Supporting male (50-69), any ethnicity. The old-school manager of hotel staff. He's seen it all, and finds it difficult to give a shit about much of anything anymore.

Detective Garrity: Supporting male (50-59), any ethnicity. Police Detective in a city on the brink; a by-the-book cop, worn down by all his years on the force. He doesn't care about or take into consideration any of the societal or political ramifications of his cases.
Detective Burke: Supporting male (30-39), any ethnicity. A Police Detective and Garrity's partner; he's an asshole, who gets off by being in a position of authority. Being a cop is how he defines himself.
It's possible that the names used could be to obscure who they really are, a common practice in superhero movies. But THS has been told that the new film will not only exist outside of the DCEU, but won't be particularly tied to the comics either. The Joker has had a mysterious and changing origin across mediums, so there's certainly plenty of room to reinvent him on the big screen. What's more, but it looks as if DC and Warner Bros. are attempting a more grounded and less fantastical story, meaning familiar comic book characters may not be in the mix.
We've heard that a new label called DC Dark or DC Black could be used for the Joker origin movie, which would be the first in a proposed line of new projects set in their own continuity. The names, of course, seem to imply the long-gestating Justice League Dark could also be a part of this universe, as it's been said it will exist separate from the DCEU. The line of films could also all be standalones, avoiding the challenging feat of world-building that's alluding the DCEU since it began. Whatever the case may be, it sounds as if we'll learn a lot more about the new Joker film before long.

[h=1]Theory: JOKER Origin Movie Based On 'Man Who Laughs'[/h]

The Joker Origin Movie may go deeper than fans expect, combining the story that inspired the villain with some Goodfellas drama. We have a theory that suggests Todd Phillips may be shaping the original novel The Man Who Laughs into a modern crime story, depicting a new Brooklyn origin for The Joker, long before the caped crusader ever showed up.
And believe us, when taking a closer look at the rumored cast of this Joker movie, all the clues and talent attached finally started to make sense. Not to mention confirming that the filmmakers are staying true to the origins of the DC supervillain. Just... not the way fans will expect.
A fake-out Joker himself would appreciate - and the main reason this Joker movie just got a LOT more interesting.

[h=2]WHAT WE KNOW OF THE JOKER ORIGIN MOVIE'S PLOT[/h]

We would urge very reader to get the details on the rumored characters of the Joker origin movie for themselves, including the legendary actor (and famed Scorsese collaborator)Robert De Niro's apparent DC movie role. But for now, we'll outline the main players - offered with only speculation into how these described characters relate to star Joaquin Phoenix's lead.
The breakdown begins with 'Penny,' a Caucasian woman aged old enough to play Phoenix's mother who has fallen from her younger, more beautiful days (and now lives with "her grown son who just moved back home"). Then there's 'Sophie Dumond,' a hardened, single mother who sees how the lower classes struggle beneath the wealthy. Theorized to be a love interest for Phoenix's lead, as well.
Toss in a pair of detectives from a New York/Gotham City setting, and some colorful working class players, and a story takes shape. If not a story... then at least a tone: lower-class characters from the streets of Gotham, or New York. But the small details used to set the tone may hint at a story already seen on film.
[h=2]THE MAN WHO LAUGHS: JOKER'S ACTUAL SECRET ORIGIN[/h]

The most devoted comic book historians will have heard of The Man Who Laughs, a 1928 film based on Victor Hugo's French novel L'Homme qui rit. While not as well-regarded as Hugo's Les Misérables, the film adaptation earned its place in history for inspiring a wave of horror films... and inspiring the visual design of The Joker, thanks to its star Conrad Veidt.

Set in 17th-Century England, the story follows the young boy Gwynplaine, disfigured and tossed aside, as he grows to adulthood alongside fellow orphan Dea. Once grown and courted by a wealthy admirer in King James's court, the truth comes out - revealing the grinning hero's true parentage and sudden ascent to a seat of power.
Comic fans may know the film and character best for his oversized dentures and grin, confirmed to have informed the original design of DC's Joker. And examining the story, themes, and colorful characters of The Man Who Laughs, the story that launched Batman's greatest enemy may now be the story turned to for the Joker origin movie..

[h=2]IS THE JOKER ORIGIN REALLY THE MAN WHO LAUGHS?[/h]So, are we suggesting Joaquin Phoenix's version of The Joker is a 17th-Century orphan? Definitely not... even if there weren't already reports that the Joker origin movie is set in 1980s America. But the structure for a compelling, unexpected, and potentially stunning crime film does exist. Simply swap out the royal families of England for the crime families of Gotham (either the fictional version, or New York City).
The true story of The Man Who Laughs is eventually revealed in flashbacks, beginning with a rivalry between two men (King James II and the Marquis of Corleone). The king makes his move first, taking out the Marquis, and having his son kidnapped and disfigured to remove his threat as well. After surviving through the darkest, dirtiest realities of the lowest classes, the grinning hero rises.
Here's where things get interesting for telling that story with The Joker in the lead role. Once the truth comes out - that the boy is actually the son and heir to his father's forces - he's given the wealth and power owed him... but he doesn't want it. When he decries the injustice of what the wealthy perpetrate upon the weak and poor, his words bring only laughter.
The Man Who Laughs makes a strong argument, but the grin carved into his face means it plays as only a joke. Turning away from wealth and status, he returns to the streets that shaped him.
[h=2]WHY THIS IS ACTUALLY A GREAT IDEA[/h]

While this potential adaptation of the original Man Who Laughs story is pure speculation on our part, it certainly helps connect the dots. On the surface, the shifting of such a story - a forgotten boy rising to command his father's criminal empire, only to shatter it - onto the streets of 1980s New York instantly makes Martin Scorsese's involvement as producer a perfect fit.
By extension, the surprising placement of The Hangover director Todd Phillips - also a Brooklyn native - at the helm of a Joker origin movie is less shocking, given comparisons between his tale of up-and-coming hustlers in War Dogs and Scorsese's own Goodfellas. Toss in writer Scott Silver (The Mod Squad, 8 Mile, The Fighter) on screenplay duties, and the story of a nobody's rise to power on the mean streets is the obvious result.

Fans may skim the plot and characters of The Man Who Laughs, be it Hugo's original novel or subsequent adaptations to stage and screen, and see the most likely role for Robert De Niro as the King James surrogate (or a similarly ruthless leader of Gotham's organized crime families). But with Joker's possible mother also being cast for her younger days, a more direct relationship is possible.
Most importantly, the prospect of Phillips, Silver, and Scorsese all looking to cut through the comic book lore and adapt the story that first inspired The Joker is far more interesting thanjust "another Joker movie." Not to mention a more standalone, character-driven, and obviously Batman-less film - just as it is reported to be.

This theory would also be harder for comic enthusiasts to dismiss on the grounds that "Joker shouldn't HAVE an origin story," since one could argue it's hardly adapting the character of The Joker at all (rather, the character upon which even he was based). But the film would also pack a moral and ethical punch that the 'villain' is rarely afforded.
The Joker is not a 'hero' any more than Scorsese's criminal protagonists are, but he may have a case. Live through horrors that Gotham's wealthiest inflict without a second glance, and get only laughs when showing it to their faces? Well, the audience might just be on Joker's side if he decided to burn it all down.
Now, we just have to wait and see if this is truly the plan for the Joker origin movie... and whether or not it should be.
