[h=1]Jessica Jones is Marvel’s Most Compelling Series Yet[/h]

[This review of Jessica Jones season 1 may contain mild SPOILERS for the first half of the season.]
The world of superheroes is one typically tied to the notion of high-octane action, bombast, and spectacle, the kind where the stakes are generally of the world-ending variety. Even for a street-level series set against the dark, grimy brickwork of a fictional Hell’s Kitchen, Marvel’s Daredevil still made a super-heroic demonstration from its frequent brutal fisticuffs and tale of a nascent hero triumphing against seemingly insurmountable odds. But if The Man Without Fear took a decidedly murky, slightly less fantastical approach to the idea of superherodom, then Jessica Jones is a stark reminder that one show’s darkness is another show’s bright, sunny day.
Make no mistake, Jessica Jones is dark; it’s the darkest thing Marvel has done, and it is also the studio’s most compelling, grown-up offering to date. The series from showrunner Melissa Rosenberg is an emotionally complex story that is riveting in its depiction of surviving trauma as a woman, and learning to trust everything again after such a distinct and harrowing violation. But it is also about will and determination; the different kinds of power superheroes often talk about when they are at their lowest point or facing a seemingly unbeatable foe.

As such, the idea of power, then, becomes the foundation on which the series is built and where it focuses most of its storytelling energies throughout the first season. Power comes in all shapes and sizes in Jessica Jones. From the raw physical power of Jones and her new acquaintance Luke Cage (Mike Colter) to the emotionally and mentally manipulative power of her nemesis Kilgrave (David Tennant), the series makes terrific use of its central theme. Moreover, the show smartly uses the different forms of power to deepen its thematic structure and build its story around a character in recovery. At the same time, it also manages to be a true to form hard-boiled detective story – complete with a boozy, defensive, and embattled private eye at its center.

Krysten Ritter is superb as the “hard-drinking, short-fused mess of a woman” around which the series revolves. Her performance in Jones hints at the sort of nuanced dramatic work she delivered during her brief stint on Breaking Bad, except this time Ritter has become the one who knocks – or rather the one who break locks with less effort than most people put into unscrewing the lid on a jar of pickles.
With her anti-social, occasionally violent, and reliably drunk characteristics, Jones reads like the sort of brash individual better known for headlining some of the most popular and critically acclaimed series of the last two decades. But rather than present another Walter White, Don Draper, or Tony Soprano, Jones is something else (there’s less sense of entitlement in the way she carries herself, for one thing). And yet, perhaps because of the specific needs of the genre in which the show ultimately takes place, there is a built-in emphasis on Jessica’s stumbling attempts to do good (and make good on her abandoned career as a superhero), as opposed to seeing her break bad.
To that end, it’s interesting how appropriate it feels for the viewer to draw from his or her experiences with certain television dramas than with the shows and films whose stories and characters exist within the same universe as Jessica Jones. That isn’t to say other series under the Marvel banner aren’t adept at drama or aimed at adults, they are; it’s just that Jones offers a different experience than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter and, to a certain extent, even Daredevil. All three shows service the needs of their characters and audience quite well, and following that logic, so does Jones; it’s just that this particular character has very specific, very different needs. The series may belong to the aforementioned universe, but it feels wholly unlike anything Marvel has attempted so far.

The distinctiveness of the series extends to the supporting cast as well. Performances are terrific all around, with the aforementioned Mike Colter distinguishing himself as Luke Cage long before his own series begins. Additions like Carrie-Ann Moss and Rachael Taylor offer the narrative a chance to breathe and focus briefly on their subplots. Moss’ Jeryn Hogarth, a powerful defense attorney who sometimes throws Jessica some work, is embroiled in a messy divorce from the always-fantastic Robin Weigert (Deadwood, Sons of Anarchy), while Trish is recovering from traumas of her own – one involving her time as a child star with a manipulative mother, and another that occurs as a direct result of her bruising the fragile ego of the series’ villain.
One of the side effects of having a villain as beguiling and twisted as Kilgrave – a fact that is further bolstered by David Tennant’s engaging performance – is the tendency for the story to be blinkered by his presence. By the time the first episode comes to a close, the plot is already swirling around Kilgrave, making questions of Jessica’s connection to and fear of him impossible to resist. While this serves the plot, giving it immediate drive and focus, it does position Jessica in something of a vacuum. The series mitigates this somewhat through her interactions with Trish and Jeryn, as well as neighbors Malcolm (Eka Darville), Ruben (Kieran Mulcare), and Robin (Colby Minifie), which help round her character out, demonstrating how she can simultaneously inspire loyalty and frustration in those who know her on any level.

The intense, limited focus of the narrative is mostly welcome, but it works as something of a double-edged sword. On one hand it makes Kilgrave an intimidating presence from the get-go. It’s similar to how Daredevil introduced Kingpin through the frightened whispers of minor criminals in the underworld of Hell’s Kitchen. And yet, after just a few episodes that intense focus can begin to feel constrictive and emotionally taxing – making a straight binge watch possible, but perhaps not recommended.
That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since the examination of the emotional fallout from what Kilgrave did to Jessica (and many, many other people) is what makes this series so distinctly different from other entries under the Marvel or even DC banner. In that sense, Jessica Jones is a refreshingly different take on the world of superheroes, one that defines itself as such without thumbing its nose at the conventions of the genre. If anything, the series embraces the predominant notions of power and responsibility, and presents them in a way that nonetheless enthralling.

[h=1]Jessica Jones Showrunner Talks Abandoned Captain Marvel Appearance[/h]

This weekend, many a comic book fans will be firing up Netflix to watch Marvel’s Jessica Jones, with Krysten Ritter playing the show’s namesake. The new TV series is Marvel and Netflix’s follow up to their widely popular Daredevil TV series released earlier this year. Jessica Jones, like Daredevil, take place in Hell’s Kitchen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While Marvel is trying to build a larger universe with Iron Man, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy on the big screen, they’re also trying to build a smaller street-level world with Daredevil and Jessica Jones that will ultimately culminate in The Defenders mini-series on Netflix. Interesting enough, one superhero that we’re going to see in Phase Three was originally going to make their debut on the Jessica Jones TV show (rather than in movie theaters).

In an interview with IGN, Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg (Dexter) talked briefly about an older version with superhero Carol Danvers (AKA Captain Marvel) on the TV show. Apparently, Danvers was featured in early development before Marvel Studios decided to expand the cinematic universe with her own movie in 2019. Rosenberg revealed:
“Back when it was at ABC Network, I did use Carol Danvers, but between then and when it ended up on Netflix, you know, the MCU shifted, and it also shifted away from the universe in the [comic] book. So in the book, the powers are very out in the open and the themes of that are about ‘the other,’ and in the cinematic universe that’s not the mythology. So there was a lot that I had to move away from, just in terms of sheer plot, and Carol Danvers got her own movie.”
Krysten Ritter and Rachel Taylor on Jessica Jones

So instead of Carol Danvers appearing on Jessica Jones, the character Patsy Walker (Rachael Taylor) was added in her place as Jessica’s best friend. For the uninitiated, Patsy Walker is a former child star/model and Jessica Jones’ best friend. She’s not a superhero on the Netflix TV series (yet), but eventually becomes Hellcat in the comic books. Rosenberg continued to explain why Patsy Walker was a much better fit for Jessica Jones than Carol Danvers:
“But as it turned out, Patsy Walker ended up being an incredibly—a much more appropriate fit with Jessica. It was better that her best friend was not someone with powers. It actually ends up being a really great mirror for her.”
It’s a smarter move for Marvel to have Carol Danvers lead her own movie instead of introducing her as a supporting character on TV. Keeping Marvel’s Netflix TV shows smaller is the main reason why they’re so successful with comic book fans and Netflix subscribers. It’s believed, Carol Danvers is a way to connect Marvel Studio’s cosmic universe to Earth because Danvers got her superpowers in an accident involving Kree alien technology. At the moment, though, it’s not clear what direction Marvel will take Carol Danvers once she does join the MCU.
[h=2]NEXT: Jessica Jones Season 1 Review[/h]Daredevil Season 1 and Jessica Jones Season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage Season 1 and Daredevil Season 2 (a.k.a. Daredevil V Punisher) will premiere on Netflix in 2016. Iron Fist and The Defenders will arrive sometime thereafter.
Captain America: Civil War will release on May 6, 2016, followed by Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 5, 2017; Spider-Man – July 28, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; Black Panther – February 16, 2018; The Avengers: Infinity War Part One – May 4, 2018; Ant-Man and the Wasp – July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel – March 8, 2019; The Avengers: Infinity War Part Two – May 3, 2019; Inhumans – July 12, 2019; and as-yet untitled Marvel movies on May 1, July 10 and November 6, 2020.

[h=1]Jessica Jones: Krysten Ritter Says ‘There is Lots of Story Left to Tell’[/h]

If Daredevil proved that Netflix was the perfect home for a dark, gritty Marvel property, then Jessica Jones pushed the limits of what that platform could do for the studio. The most recent series produced by Marvel Studios tackled some truly somber topics, but did so with such a careful, masterful skill that it has left pretty much the entirety of the audience begging for more.
Luckily enough, the creative forces behind the highly acclaimed Netflix series seem to share our own interest in seeing Jessica Jones fleshed out further. One of the behind-the-scenes champions of the series is Jessica Jones herself, Krysten Ritter, who admits that there’s still quite a bit of story left to give to the audience.

Speaking with THR, Ritter explained that the story of Jessica Jones on Netflix is far from over, and although she couldn’t discuss the possibility of season 2, she is definitely up for it:
“It’s such a tricky thing. I’m not supposed to talk about that. But I think there is lots of story left to tell with Jessica and I really love playing the character. I would love to throw on her boots and leather jacket anytime.”
Those who have watched Jessica Jones would likely agree with her take on the matter. While the first season of her solo series showcased immense growth for the character, Jessica Jones has thus far only really explored her relationship with Kilgrave (David Tennant), and that specific era of her life. Prior to being brainwashed by the psychotic mind-controller, she had already gone through numerous ups and down throughout her life that the series touched upon, but never fully explored.

Whether or not the next season of Jessica Jones takes place after the events we have already witnessed remains to be seen. The fact that she has now met Claire Temple, a.k.a. Night Nurse (Rosario Dawson), seems like a solid enough jumping-off point for her to further integrate herself with the greater MCU. Then again, any era of the character’s life could make for a potential goldmine in terms of storytelling.
Later in the interview, it’s mentioned that Jessica Jones often brings up the fact that being a hero never fully worked out for her. Whatever her reasons for getting back into the hero game must be by the time The Defenders rolls around will have to be pretty serious to convince her to join forces with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Even Ritter is curious as to how it will all work out.
“…it will be interesting to see how Jessica Jones fits in with those other guys because she doesn’t want to be a superhero. She doesn’t want anything to do with that. I have no idea how she’s going to be forced to team up with all of them.”
As the first season of her solo series ended, audiences saw that Jessica was just beginning to re-enter the business of being a hero. And that idea has seemingly opened up endless possibilities for her as a character.
Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 and Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix in 2016. Release dates for Iron Fist and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.

Marvel's Jessica Jones Renewed for Season 2 by Netflix

At the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, Netflix announced they've renewed Marvel's Jessica Jones for a second season, comprised of 13 new episodes. Jessica Jones was one of five Marvel series initially announced for Netflix and the second in a row, after Marvel's Daredevil, to get renewed for Season 2 after a well-received first season.

Daredevil: Season 2 is set to debut on Netflix on March 18th, followed by Luke Cage (starring Jessica Jones' Mike Colter), which is now in production, later this year. The third Netflix/Marvel series, Iron Fist, recently found its showrunner in Dexter alum Scott Buck, though no casting has been announced yet, so it remains to be seen if we'll get Iron Fist: Season 1 or Jessica Jones: Season 2 first on Netflix before The Defenders series teams up all four Marvel characters.

UPDATE: I asked Netflix's CCO Ted Sarandos when we might see Jessica Jones and he says it will all depend on the scheduling of The Defenders, which itself is still to be determined. So whether we'll see the new Jessica season before or after The Defenders is still a question.
It was recently revealed that Netflix is also developing The Punisher as a potential series, spinning off the character after his introduction in Daredevil: Season 2.

[h=1]Jessica Jones Showrunner Talks Season 2[/h]

[This article contains SPOILERS for Jessica Jones season 1.]
Marvel’s Jessica Jones explored new ground in the superhero genre, focusing not on an up-and-coming hero but on someone who tried to be a hero and found out the hard way what can go wrong. Jessica brought a lot of baggage to the first season of the show, and it seemed to only get heavier as the season went on.
The second season of Jessica Jones was officially confirmed at the Television Critics Association’s 2016 winter press tour. At the show’s panel, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg and members of the cast discussed where Jessica was at the end of season 1 and where they hope to take the show in season 2, now that the ongoing adventures of Jessica Jones are officially on the table.
Speaking to reporters after the panel, Rosenberg discussed what she wants to do with season 2 of the show:
“I just want to continue with [Jessica’s] character. She’s a very damaged character, her damage goes beyond Kilgrave. There’s a lot to mine from in her backstory and in her present day situation, so I think we’ll find something.”

Rosenberg also discussed the character’s comic book origin and the fact that much of the story of season 1 was mined from the Marvel Max series Alias. Though Jessica has been featured in other stories and was one of the main characters in The Pulse as well, Alias is still considered by many to be the definitive Jessica Jones book. Rosenberg hopes to continue using it for inspiration, saying, “I will always use as much as I can from the book,” but acknowledging that it may not be possible to follow the comics closely as far as Jessica is concerned. She explained:
“Unfortunately, we’ve moved away from the mythology of the book. The MCU is very different from the comics in terms of its mythology. In the books there were things building towards Civil War and all that, and here that’s not the case. The nature of that is we’re probably not going to be able to continue to do parallel storylines, but I’ll always take as much as I can because it’s really just so good.”
Others involved with the series also commented on season 2 as well, including star Krysten Ritter. In looking forward to Jessica’s continuing journey and where the character is psychologically, Ritter had the following to say:
“For Jessica, that final moment, that victorious, triumphant moment when she killed Kilgrave, I found that very conflicting. He’s the reason why she got up every day. He’s the reason why she went out in the world, and it really gave her a purpose. I don’t think that the past trauma doesn’t go away with his death. Her head space is really complex.”

Rachel Taylor, who played Jessica’s best friend Trish (Patsy) Walker, was asked about her character and whether she thought that the character might assume her “Hellcat” alias from the comics moving forward. She stressed that they had just found out about the renewal earlier that day and didn’t want to get ahead of herself, but eventually did relent and added:
“But, of course, it would be amazing! It’s already a privilege to play a history that has so much lineage within the Marvel universe and to take it that one step further, is something that, yeah… I’d love to get my teeth stuck into whatever happens to the character.”
Fans are excited at the prospect of a second season, even though it’s too early to know much of anything about it. With season 2 of Daredevil and the Luke Cage series both coming before it (and possibly Iron Fist and even The Defenders), there’s a lot going on in the Netflix corner of the Marvel universe that could affect how season 2 of Jessica Jones plays out. There will likely be a lot of speculation about it as well, including some rereading of Alias issues to see if there are any plot points or characters that might find their way into the MCU once season 2 hits.

Jessica Jones
has been renewed for a second season, though a release date for the season is not yet known. Daredevil season 2 debuts on March 18, 2016, and Luke Cage is set for release later in the year. Iron Fist and Defenders are expected to premiere sometime in 2017.

[h=1]Jessica Jones Season 2: Rachael Taylor Hopeful for Hellcat Storyline[/h]

Marvel’s Jessica Jones was a big hit for Netflix; following on from Daredevil, and setting things up nicely for the Luke Cage series which is set to arrive later in 2016. In fact, Marvel has quite the slate of shows lined up for Netflix, including another Daredevil season as well as Iron Fist and The Defenders (dates to be announced), and it’s no surprise that a second Jessica Jones season was ordered too.
Gritty, raw, and undeniably real, Marvel managed to paint superheroes as flawed, everyday individuals and deadly villains as people you’d like to get coffee with, until you realized what they were capable of. One of the many highlights of Jessica Jones was undoubtedly the strong friendship between Jessica and her childhood best friend, Trish Walker.
The character of Trish is based on Patsy Walker (her child star name in the show), the Marvel comics character better known as Hellcat. Played by Rachael Taylor, Trish did not assume her superhero alter-ego during the first season, but there were hints about her possibly doing so in the future; not least in her desire to fight for justice alongside Jessica. Now Taylor has discussed that relationship dynamic a little more, in an interview with CBR News (via Comicbook.com).

Discussing the “imperfect relationship” between Trish and Jessica, Taylor referenced the hints of jealousy we saw between the two in season one; particularly in the way Trish upped her fight training in an effort to stand alongside Jessica on more equal footing:
“I think Trish would really like to see Jessica use her gifts, her superhero powers, to a greater extent than what she probably does. I think Trish is very much an alpha personality type. I think she’s a very ambitious woman. And I think probably, if she had the same superhero powers that Jessica had, she thinks that she would probably do a lot more with them.”
As yet, very little is known about Jessica Jones’ second season, mainly because it’s only just been ordered, but showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has said she is looking forward to exploring more of Jessica’s backstory. Of course, that would potentially involve a closer look at how Jessica and Trish came to have such a deep bond, which was touched upon in flashback during season one.

When asked outright if Taylor would like Trish to become Hellcat she was once again vague in her answer, which was hardly a surprise given that it’s unlikely she has any hint at what’s to come for her character or Jessica Jones as a whole just yet.
“I mean, I try not to get ahead of myself and think about it too much, because it’s easy to get carried away and think about things. I already feel like I have more than my share, in a way, being on Netflix, being in the Marvel Universe, being in this show that has resonated so deeply with people. But of course, I mean, it would be amazing. I mean, it’s already a privilege to play a history that has so much lineage within the Marvel Universe. And to take it that one step further is something that, yeah, I’d love to get my teeth stuck into whatever happens to the character.”
It would certainly be intriguing to see Hellcat come to fruition; to have her fighting alongside Jessica would be the ultimate in female superhero duos. However, even if it doesn’t come off, we still have more of the great friendship we saw between the pair to come in Jessica Jones season two.

Jessica Jones
has been renewed for a second season, though a release date has not yet been announced. Daredevil season 2 debuts on March 18, 2016, and Luke Cage season 1 is set for release later in 2016. Iron Fist and Defenders are expected to premiere sometime in 2017.

[h=1]Jessica Jones Season 2 To Film Right After The Defenders[/h]

Marvel has placed itself in a unique and interesting position when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the one hand, the studio has earned the title of heavy weight champion at the box office, with movies like Captain America: Civil War. For eight years now, Marvel has been slowly taking over the cinematic world, dominating the competition and weaving an intricate web of stories that keep fans coming back for me. The good will it’s earned from its cinematic success has led the studio to take some experimental chances in the world of television.

These experiments have evolved into another side of the MCU, one that’s every bit as rich and exciting as the world they crafted with their movies. The MCU’s Netflix shows have added layers of texture to the universe established by the films, and have allowed audiences new insights into people that comprise the fantastic world of the MCU. Their first Netflix outing, Daredevil, earned praise from critics and fans, and solidified plans for what’s become known as The Defenders—an Avengers-like team up of smaller scale heroes following the momentum building releases of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones season 1 was one of Netflix’s biggest success stories in 2015 too, earning praise for its handling of trauma survival and the handling of a character with a complex psychology. That series left fans chomping at the bit for even more if the titular heroine, and now we’ve got out first indication of when the follow up season may come to light.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter offered some new hints about when we can expect to see Jessica on the small screen, and also when Jessica Jones season 2 will likely arrive. According to Ritter, season 2 won’t film until sometime after The Defenders (which is set to begin production near the end of 2016):
“They’ll be back-to-back. I don’t know if they’ll overlap a little bit. It’s about to be a serious undertaking. I’m starting my physical training—lots of weight training and boxing.”
From the sound of things, it’s about to be a very busy time for Ritter, with The Defenders and Jessica Jones season two filming in such close proximity. Unfortunately, this means we probably won’t see the second season of her show until 2017 at the earliest, but Ritter, for her part, is excited about where the story might go.
“I’m excited to see what happens next for Jessica, and the end of season one left a lot of doors open and questions unanswered. Kilgrave was her reason for getting up every morning. Saving people gave her purpose. I wonder how emotionally taxed she’s going to be now. That opens a lot of doors as to who will come out and play. We all live in the same universe, so there are endless possibilities.”

While that settles questions of Jessica Jones and The Defenders, there remains the possibility that Ritter might appear on Netflix again when Luke Cage is released later this year. Luke, of course, was introduced on the first season of Jessica Jones, where the two characters forged a tumultuous relationship, and in the comics, Luke and Jessica are married and have a child together. Whether or not she’ll appear on his series is still unknown, though Ritter was suspiciously coy about the subject when asked.
“Marvel have this grand plan. Luke Cage will come out, then Iron Fist. In terms of scheduling I don’t know how it will all come out and I can’t even tell you if I’ve filmed Luke Cage. But I’m excited for Mike [Colter] to have his own show. I know the tone of that show is going to be very different.”
Marvel is, of course, notoriously secretive about their projects, as fans will remember regarding the previews for Civil War. Despite having announced the appearance of Spider-Man in the movie, the studio withheld images of the web-slinger for months until the release of the second trailer. With that in mind, it’s important to note that Ritter didn’t explicitly deny being involved with the production of Luke Cage, so the door remains open for now.

Daredevil
season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher spinoff on Netflix have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Jessica Jones Season 2 May Have Multiple Villains[/h]

As Marvel and Netflix gear up for their third solo Defender series, Luke Cage, to debut next month, the anticipation level is high thanks to how quickly Mike Colter won viewers over during his debut in season 1 of Jessica Jones. Luke was only a supporting character to the larger story that revolved around Jessica, and ultimately became an important part in her struggle to rid herself of Kilgrave. David Tennant was able to relay a sense of charm and creepiness all at once as the latter, but with his story coming to an end in the season one finale, the question remains: who will Jessica (Krysten Ritter) be fighting once the already-announced Jessica Jones season 2 is released?
Jessica does not have the most well-known comic book villain gallery, admittedly, so Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg should be able to have her choice as the main bad guy (or gal). After focusing heavily on a single villain in season 1, it appears that Jessica and friends could have more enemies this time around.

During a recent interview with EW, Rosenberg was asked about what she is planning to put in Jessica’s way next season, and it sounds like at least two villains could be featured prominently in the story. While she did not reveal which characters in particular they are planning on using, Jessica will have more foes in her corner of Hell’s Kitchen. The reason according to Rosenberg is not just to add more people to the universe, but to change up the formula as to not try and repeat themselves with Kilgrave. As she put it:
“Or antagonists, plural. No one is ever going to beat David Tennant as Kilgrave, so you don’t do that. The biggest mistake would be to try to repeat that. You just go, “OK, we’re not doing that, so we have this open to us.”

Rosenberg was then pressed as to who “this” opportunity could be, but she would not reveal anything saying, “I can’t spoil a surprise.” One of the potential villains for the second season could be Nuke (Wil Traval) after his backstory and relationships being set up in Jessica Jones season one. Another possibility is Trish Walker (Rachel Taylor) transforms into Hellcat (like in the Marvel Comics Universe) during the show’s second season and becomes something of an antagonistic force to Jessica (a la Daredevil and Punisher (Jon Bernthal) in Daredevil season 2).
While it may sound great to feature more villains in a season, Marvel and Netflix have so far done a good job focusing on one villain and giving the audience time to learn about their story as well. That said, using an antagonist such as Nuke would allow the series to stick with the tradition of bringing in relatable villains. Even Daredevil has used multiple villains in both season that all connect to the larger villain at play. Luke Cage looks like it could do the same thing by featuring Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard) and Cottonmouth (Mahershala Ali). By the time Jessica Jones season 2 starts filming, Marvel and Netflix could have found the right, new formula to keep bringing in more villains but maintaining the high quality of each.

Daredevil
season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. The Defenders and Iron Fist arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Jessica Jones Showrunner: Jessica Will Not Be ‘Cured’ in Season 2[/h]

Following up Netflix and Marvel’s popular first season of Daredevil was no easy task, but Jessica Jones managed to make a name for herself as a uniquely tormented street-level hero. Jessica earned herself a planned follow-up season, but one that will have to wait a while. Luke Cage and Iron Fist, are next on the docket, with Jessica’s next appearance set for The Defenders series, which will team-up all four of the Netflix Marvel heroes.
The threat to Jessica in her first season was deeply personal and immeasurably damaging. Once a slave of the mind-controlling, Kilgrave, Jessica’s journey sees her attempting to overcome both her own PTSD and a nemesis that renders null the benefits of her superhuman strength.
In an interview with Esquire, Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg (Dexter) promised that Jessica won’t be magically fixed just because she overcame the source of many of her problems.

“She was kind of messed up even before Kilgrave came along, and so in season 2 we can explore what’s possible for her moving forward. I learned from working on Dexter that you can advance the character, but you never want to cure the character. With Dexter, the moment he felt guilt or accepted that he was ‘bad,’ the show’s over. He’s no longer a sociopath. The equivalent for us would be if Jessica somehow recovered from the damage that had been done to her. People don’t just heal, you don’t go through that just to say, ‘Oh, he got arrested, he’s in jail, I’m OK now.’ That trauma is a huge part of who she is now.”

Rosenberg also admitted that the long period before the second season has been a blessing in disguise.
“When I went to cable [on Dexter] having worked in network TV for many years, I realized I was doing the best work of my career, because I had the time to do it. Half of writing is rewriting, and that’s what you have the time for on a cable schedule. This is an even more generous schedule than that.”
As for Rosenberg’s role in The Defenders team-up, she says she’s “only as involved as they need me to be.” Since Jessica will be involved in a whole season of team adventures before her return to her own show, Rosenberg’s task is to pick her up from there.
“I need to know what they’re doing in order to plan for season 2 of Jessica, and they need to know what we’re planning on in turn. Marvel is very smart and they enjoy collaboration, so there’s never one maniac trying to take ownership.”
It sounds like Marvel will be employing the same collaborative techniques that have made their ongoing movie sagas so cohesive, despite being designed by multiple directoral visions. Considering this methodology is similar to the comics the characters are derived from, it sounds like the Netflix series are in good hands.
Half of Jessica Jones’ appeal is her tenacity in the face of her brokenness so it’s good to know that, just like real people, she’ll be struggling to overcome the internal threats to her well being for a long time come. This may be bad for Jessica, but it makes for great drama.
Daredevilseason 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. Iron Fist and The Defenders arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.

[h=1]Jessica Jones Season 2 Will Feature All Female Directors[/h]

With the premiere of Doctor Strange this fall, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will officially include 14 films, one current TV show at ABC, and three series housed at Netflix — two seasons of Daredevil and one each of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. However the MCU is continually expanding, and that’s true of Netflix’s corner featuring the street-level heroes of New York City. Iron Fist debuts next year, followed by The Defenders, The Punisher, as well as subsequent seasons of Jessica Jones and Daredevil.
One of the strengths of Netflix’s Marvel series — which have garnered plenty of praise from critics, Marvel fans, and casual TV viewers alike — has been their ability to diversify the MCU in terms of tone by offering more mature, grounded stories. However, both Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have also diversified in terms of those involved with the shows’ production both in front of and behind the camera. In the case of Jessica Jones, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg is continuing to push for more representation with the show’s second season.
During her keynote panel at the Transform Hollywood symposium, Rosenberg said all 13 episodes of Jessica Jones season 2 will be directed by women, as reported by Variety’s Maureen Ryan. It remains to be seen who these women will be, but with Jessica Jones season 2 expected to film after The Defenders — which is set to begin in early November — it’s likely we may learn more soon enough.

Season 1 of Jessica Jones was praised for its handling of sexual assault and rape, a subject that has been discussed many times in terms of pop culture in recent years due to television series and film portrayals. Game of Thrones has notoriously drawn criticism for its depiction of rape and sexual violence committed against women. However, though Jessica Jones provided a compelling and realistic portrayal of sexual assault — as well as the trauma that can result from it — only three of the nine directors who worked on season 1 were women.
However, while Jessica Jones‘ and Rosenberg’s push to have more female representation behind the scenes of the show’s second season seems to be the first of its kind for Marvel TV, documentary filmmaker Alexia Prichard, who was also in attendance at the panel, pointed out that Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar hired an entirely female team of directors for its first season that debuted this summer. Additionally, Queen Sugar featured women of color directors, including DuVernay herself.
That said, considering Marvel’s push for diversity across all media in recent years, Rosenberg’s announcement shouldn’t be too surprising. On the film side, Marvel Studios is currently narrowing down choices for a female director for the Captain Marvel film (following the lead of Warner Bros’ and DC’s Wonder Woman movie that was directed by Patty Jenkins). Additionally, Marvel hired Black creators for both their Black Panther film (director and co-writer Ryan Coogler) and Luke Cage (showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker).
Certainly, Marvel has drawn criticism for their upcoming portrayals and whitewashing of Asian characters, Doctor Strange and Iron Fist most notably. Arguably the film and television show would have benefitted from having Asian American creators behind the scenes as directors, writers, and/or producers. But Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has seemingly taken the criticisms of Doctor Strange under consideration and will hopefully improve in the future.

As for Jessica Jones season 2, although little is known about the plot, Rosenberg has previously said the heroine (played by Krysten Ritter) will continue to deal with the trauma from her sexual assault. Additionally, Jessica will need to deal with the fallout from the season 1 finale and the fact that she killed someone — albeit someone who had harmed her and those closest to her. Plus, Rosenberg previously teased that season 2 will feature more of the relationship between Jessica and Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor).
Of course, with Jessica Jones season 2 expected to begin filming after The Defenders wraps, we may learn more about what to expect from the heroine’s sophomore outing in the coming weeks and months. But, based on Rosenberg’s comments, it seems she and Marvel are trying to tell the best stories with the best team.

Daredevil
season 1 & 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist season 1 arrives on March 17th, 2017. The Defenders and The Punisher arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2 and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.

Jessica Jones: Is Nuke Actor Teasing His Return In Season 2?

Jessica Jones has officially begun filming its second season this month, following the highly publicized production of The Defenders just recently. Right now, no concrete premiere date has been set, though, Marvel and Netflix have given it a mysterious 2018 tag as of right now. However, it looks like Jessica Jones season 2 may feature the return of one of season 1’s most important players, with Nuke actor Will Traval taking teasing his possible involvement in the new season.
After initially beginning their run on Netflix in 2015, each of the heroes of Hell’s Kitchen are currently preparing to begin teaming up sometime this year in The Defenders, but that’s not the only Marvel and Netflix TV season that fans are looking particularly forward to.
That, of course, is the long-awaited second season of Jessica Jones, the most critically acclaimed out of the four Defenders shows, and which wrapped up its first season back near the end of 2015. Ever since, fans of the series have been asking when they can expect to see a follow-up season of the hit show, only to be met with mostly vague responses from those involved.
That all changed recently with the aforementioned start of production on season 2, which was quickly followed by Traval, who took to his Twitter account to tease his involvement and say the following:

Now, Will Simpson, aka Nuke, was one of the more unexpected elements of Jessica Jones‘ first season. Originally used as just a pawn of The Purple Man (David Tennant), Simpson went on to have a romantic relationship with Jessica’s best friend, Trish (Rachael Taylor), forcing his way into their operation to take The Purple Man down, before eventually succumbing to the strength-enhancing, psyche-altering pills he took near the end of the season. Most fans didn’t even realize right away that he was the Nuke character from the comics until after the show had ended when Simpson had finally begun what looked to be his total transformation into the character.

Whether or not he will actually end up painting an American flag on his face and going totally crazy in the new season will have to wait to be seen, if he even is in the follow-up. After all, Traval is careful to not actually say he’s shooting Jessica Jones, rather opting to just tease that he’ll be reuniting with some old friends soon in New York City. The timing is just too coincidental to shrug away, however, and it’d likely be fair to say that Jessica Jones not bringing Nuke back for the new season would be strange, to say the least. His fate was left ambiguous for the most part, captured by the mysterious organization that gave him the pills in the first place and was last seen being taken away from Jessica’s apartment in the season finale. Where exactly he goes from there will, for the time being, just have to wait to be seen.

Jessica Jones season 2 is expected to air sometime 2018 and The Defenders will premiere summer 2017 on Netflix.

[h=1]Jessica Jones Season 2 Casts Janet McTeer in Mystery Role[/h]

Production on Jessica Jones season 2 is now reportedly underway, with Janet McTeer among the new cast additions. Though Netflix has been regularly releasing shows involving the characters of The Defenders – with the full team-up series debuting this summer – Jessica Jones fans have been waiting a long time for a second season of the super-strong heroine’s critically-acclaimed solo outing. After the death of psychically powerful villain Kilgrave (David Tennant) at the end of season 1, there are many questions about what Jessica (Krysten Ritter) will do next.
Though filming on new episodes for Jessica Jones just began this month, the showrunners did begin revealing pieces of information about the series last year. Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has promised that, though the great weight of imminent danger from Kilgrave has been lifted from her psyche, Jessica definitely won’t be cured of all that psychological damage in season 2. In keeping with the show’s personal, grounded story arcs, the even closer bond Jessica formed with her adoptive sister Trish (Rachael Taylor) will also be more fully explored.
Rosenberg has also revealed that Jessica Jones wouldn’t try to top or repeat the Kilgrave arc, so season 2 will likely include multiple villains. That could have some bearing on the recent casting news from EW, which reports that two-time Oscar nominee McTeer will appear in the series as “an undisclosed character who will have an enormous impact on Jessica’s life.”

With so little information to go on, it’s tough to guess if McTeer will take on a role originated in Marvel Comics or if it will be a new part created for the series. Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb has said McTeer’s character will fit in well with the thoughtful, noir vibe of Jessica Jones:
“We are so fortunate to have an actress of Janet’s talent and stature join what is already an incredible cast. Our second season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones aims to capture what audiences loved about our first, and Janet will be key to achieving that goal.”

Viewers may recognize McTeer from her recent role as Queen Elizabeth’s mother in Starz series The White Queen. She also appeared on the big screen in Allegiant, Insurgent, and The Woman in Black, and provided the narration for Maleficent. Showrunner Rosebenberg has also expressed her thrill at including the accomplished theater actress in season 2 of Jessica Jones:
“We couldn’t possibly be more excited to work with Ms. McTeer for our second season. Her gravitas and authenticity are the perfect ingredients for all we’re trying to create this year. She disappears into roles, gives her characters extraordinary dimension and depth. We’re incredibly fortunate to be able to collaborate with her.”
This casting news is definitely a good sign that the emotional complexity of Jessica Jones will continue into the new season. While some have speculated the actress might take on the role of Daredevil enemy Typhoid Mary, her powers and personality seem to fall too much into Kilgrave territory to fit in with what Rosenberg has suggested for the show. With the possibility of Will Simpson returning to Jessica Jones as the unstable Nuke, it seems more likely McTeer might take on a more insidious role, someone who seems to be a friend but has a secret agenda.

The Defenders
arrives on August 18th, 2017, with The Punisher coming later this year. Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Jessica Jones season 1, Luke Cage season 1, and Iron Fist season 1 are now available on Netflix. Premiere dates for the next seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage have not yet been revealed.

[h=1]Hellcat Takes Action in Jessica Jones Set Photos[/h]

Trish Walker takes one step closer to being a superhero by fighting crime herself in new set photos for Jessica Jones season 2. Rachael Taylor became a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe a few years back by joining the cast of Jessica Jones for its first season. Her debut alongside Krysten Ritter made her the best friend to New York’s least interested hero, but the disinterest was not something the duo shared. In fact, much of Trish’s season 1 arc was to put her in position to one day (hopefully) take up a superhero mantle of her own.
For comic readers, they already know that she will one day become Hellcat if that arc is fulfilled. She’s done the training and experimented with dangerous pills in the past, and all of this has now made her capable of dealing with some street level criminals all on her own.

HawtCelebs has shared new set photos from season 2 of Jessica Jones, showing Trish take on at least one – but possibly multiple – bad guys. With Jessica’s other friend Malcolm (Eka Darville) also part of the scene, this could be a drug deal gone wrong for him that Trish must save him from. Not only is this one of the first times fans will get to see Trish fight for justice on the streets, but the yellow and blue color scheme of her outfit also hints towards her potentially suiting up herself.
[h=2]CLICK HERE FOR JESSICA JONES SET PHOTOS[/h]

There has yet to be any indication that Trish will eventually take up her superhero mantle of Hellcat, but she continues to move in that direction. She has already shown an interest in costumes by teasing the comic costume for Jewel in season 1, so it would be no surprise for her to one day get a costume of her own. Taylor has admitted before that she doesn’t want to get ahead of the story, deciding to wait and see whether or not she is given that chance. But, with the fighting abilities now on full display and great subtle teases of her possible color scheme, it is certainly not out of the question.
Outside of the potential for her to fully become Hellcat, Taylor has routinely been a part of the set photos that have come out for season 2. This could point to her having an even bigger role in the sophomore season of the series, allowing for showrunner Melissa Rosenberg to put even more of an emphasis on her female characters this season – including the potential main villain. What exactly is in store for Trish in season 2 is still unknown, but with her also part of The Defenders, the team up could help launch her arc and continued effort to be a hero.

The Defenders
premieres on August 18, with The Punisher’s solo outing also set for release this year. New seasons of Daredevil and Luke Cage have also been scheduled for a 2018 release. Jessica Jones season 2 is also expected to debut on Netflix at some point in 2018. [h=1]Jessica Jones Season 2 Casts Arrow & Power’s J.R. Ramirez[/h]

Former Arrow star, J.R. Ramirez, has joined the season 2 cast of Marvel and Netflix’s Jessica Jones. While almost all of Marvel’s Netflix series have been welcomed with open arms by fans and critics alike, none have received quite the same acclaim as the first season of Jessica Jones did. Indeed, Krysten Ritter’s take on the beloved super-powered Private Investigator quickly turned her into a fan favorite amongst comic book fans, all of whom are looking forward to Jessica’s long-awaited small screen return in next month’s team-up miniseries event, The Defenders.
Although The Defenders marks the next time that audiences get to see Jessica on the small screen, it won’t be the last, with the character already set to return for season 2 of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, likely sometime later this year. While no plot details have been released about the show’s sophomore season as of yet, production on Jessica Jones season 2 has been underway for several months now.
[h=3]Related: Marvel’s The Defenders Trailer #2[/h]One of the show’s newest additions has now been revealed, with EW reporting that Ramirez has been cast in Jessica Jones season 2.The report states that Ramirez will appear in a recurring guest star capacity as Oscar, a “devoted single father who moves into Jessica’s (Krysten Ritter) building as the new superintendent.” Despite Oscar’s young son becoming enamored with Jessica and her powers, the single father tries to keep his distance, worried about the trouble that typically follows Jessica. Executive Producer and showrunner, Melissa Rosenberg, commented on Ramirez’s casting with the following:
“J.R. is an incredible addition to our cast, bringing complex and subtle emotion and humor. He exudes warmth, edge and intelligence, and blends perfectly with our tone.”

Currently, Ramirez is one of the main stars on Starz’s Power, but Jessica Jones won’t be the first time that Ramirez has appeared in a comic book TV series. The actor briefly played Ted Grant/Wildcat in The CW’s Arrow, though, his time on the series did not last as long as many fans had expected. He joins fellow new additions like Janet McTeer, Leah Gibson, and more, in the second season of the popular Marvel and Netflix series.
Considering just how much destruction and trouble Jessica wound up inadvertently bringing to her apartment complex throughout the show’s first season, Oscar may be biting off more than he can chew as her new superintendent. There’s currently no official word on what villains Jessica may be facing off against in the new season, but her reputation as an unofficial superhero protector of the innocent will likely make it much harder for her to keep a low profile in the new season. Fortunately, she will still have a nice circle of close friends and allies to help her face off against whatever threats come her way, following her triumph over David Tennant’s villainous Killgrave at the end of the first season.

[h=1]David Tennant Returning For Jessica Jones Season 2[/h]

It has been confirmed that David Tennant will be making a return appearance as Kilgrave/The Purple Man in season 2 of Marvel and Netflix’s Jessica Jones. The news comes just a few days before Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones makes her triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe this Friday with the release of Marvel and Netflix’s team-up miniseries, The Defenders. But while The Defenders will feature Jessica teaming up with Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), it won’t be long after that before fans can finally see the long-awaited second season of Jessica Jones.

Season 2 of Jessica Jones‘ has been filming for some time now in New York, and as such, there has been a fair amount of set photos and possible story details leaking from the production fairly frequently over the past few months. While no one involved in the show has hinted at his possible return or role in the new season either, the influence/impact that Tennant’s villainous, monstrous Kilgrave may have over Jessica and the show’s other characters in the new season, has been a constant point of speculation and discussion amongst fans.
[h=3]Related: Jessica Jones Season 2 Features a “Dark and Heavy” Story[/h]This morning as well, EW has officially confirmed that Tennant will be reprising his role as Kilgrave in season two of Jessica Jones. However, aside from the first photo of Tennant and Ritter together on set (which you can see below), the publication says all details surrounding Kilgrave’s return to the series are being kept under tight wraps for the time being.

While Tennant’s Kilgrave has become regarded as one of the greatest onscreen comic book villains to date, fans were uncertain if they’d ever get to see the actor reprise his role as the character again. The first season of Jessica Jones did end, after all, with Ritter’s Jones becoming immune to Kilgrave’s mind control powers, which gave her the ability to finally kill him once and for all, by snapping his neck in the season finale. And as a result of that, the reasons behind Kilgrave’s return to the series are especially unclear as of right now.
It’s possible that Tennant could be returning in some kind of flashback to a moment before even the events of the show’s first season, which was a device that Jessica Jones used frequently throughout its freshman run. It’s not uncommon for comic book villains to return from the dead either, though, that’d be something the Netflix series would have to take some serious time to explain. Considering the impact that Kilgrave had over Jessica’s psyche as well, it’s equally possible that he could be appearing as a ghost/vision conjured up by Jessica’s mind, as a result of her own PTSD. So at this point, it’s impossible to know for sure how exactly Kilgrave is returning to the Marvel/Netflix series, but for the Jessica Jones fans out there who were desperately hoping to see more from Tennant’s Purple Man, the show’s second season will now, at the very least, be delivering on that request.
[h=2]

The Defenders
premieres on August 18 on Netflix, with The Punisher premiering later in 2017. Additional seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage are expected to air in 2018, with the new season of Iron Fistcoming sometime in the future.[/h]Source: EW
