So i currently have an i7 920 and Asus P6T. I still have the boxes and stuff but the items have no warranty. I would have been happy with it except that it doesnt have USB 3.0 and thats a problem. So its time to upgrade. I am trying to keep the budget for upgrading my processor and motherboard to 10k, maybe a bit more. I prefer buying items that are used rather than buying brand new. I dont overclock but I like all the bells and whistles you get with a good motherboard, so I would prefer something thats not completely basic. I am partial towards Asus since they have been serving me well till now. I am not going to use SLI or crossfire but I dont mind if the motherboard has the option for it. On the motherboard there should atleast 6 or more sata ports, one of the ports will be used by an ssd that I also intend to get. USB 3.0 and Esata is a must. I would also need slots to install my ATI 4890 and X-Fi Titanium.

I unfortuantely no longer have the time to overclock or play video games. So the primary reason for having a good processor is that I like having something thats fast and high end, and also the boasting rights, that definitely shouldnt be forgotten.

So what would you guys advise

i7 920 only lacks USB3 (other features of 2nd/3rd/4th generations are useless)... otherwise you don't need to upgrade... as you will get a lower setup in 31k

whatsoever, you can try to find used i5 2500k/2600k with a suitable mb. in 25~30k range

if new, then i5 4440 with a mb. like Asus B85M or Intel DH87RL

also i doubt your setup goes in 21k :) ... however you can try to sell it at best possible price

buy a usb 3.0 card if you want usb 3.0 and do raid 0 with intel older x25 or 320 sata II ssds, they are killer, 1366 is still a best and the overclocking is old school and really easy, 2nd, 3rd and 4th i have used all with many combo, zero different in genral and gaming, in price to performence it the best and its so stable, there is 90$ card that a\has sata 6 two ports and it give 500mb read and 460mb writes max, problem is its 90$ :(

point is what ever he get in that price will be a downgrade, 2500k with a p67 or z87 board is a good option but those boards will die quickly newer gen boards are so buggy if you buy a mid or high mid range used, i suggest not to update, well in 2014 and 2015 pci slots for ssds and with better and stable controllers with ddr4 and pci 4.0 thats worth of the upgrade, if you are concerned that the system wont last that long or you have got bored with the hasswell refresh Q1 2014 is the way to go.

Ok i am using an intel 520. Apparently it seems i need sata 6gb/s to get full performance from it. So that seems to be another reason for me to upgrade

Voodoo my friend, in the end its one simple question. 3rd gen i7 3770 setup or 4th gen i5 4440 setup? LoL. Either way it seems i wont have to spend more than around 12k.

Currently i am edging towards 4th gen i5, but its so hard to find the mobo and processor in used. I already good option for 3rd gen i7 but i am not going for it
