Black Adam Release Date Moves to July 2022

Big things are coming to the DC Extended Universe and perhaps the only thing as big (bigger?) than the Justice League itself, is Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The actor has been set to play the antihero/villain Black Adam in a Shazam DCEU solo film for years now, but of late there have been more and more signs that momentum on the project is picking up, ahead of its scheduled 2019 theatrical release date.
Johnson has been quite vocal about his enthusiasm towards the Black Adam character in the past; most recently, he met with DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns, to discuss the future of the DCEU and Black Adam’s role in it. Well, it turns out that the character is going to be playing a much more substantial role in the next “phase” of the DCEU than was previously expected.


Deadline is reporting that Johnson as Black Adam is now getting his own solo movie, as part of the DCEU. It would appear that the plan now is to introduce Black Adam in his own film, ahead of Shazam (a character who has yet to be cast) being incorporated into the larger narrative tapestry of the DCEU at a later point in time. THR‘s Borys Kit is also reporting that the plan is for Black Adam to not be the main villain in the first Shazam movie, but that he could appear in a sequel. Moreover, Kit says that Black Adam himself could first show up (via cameo) in an upcoming DCEU feature like Aquaman, prior to his own solo film release.

Johnson is currently one of the most dependable draws at the box office and he looks to only increase his starpower over the year ahead, between his roles in projects like the Baywatch film reboot and the next Fast & Furious movie, The Fate of the Furious. It’s only natural, then, that Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment would feel confident enough to give the go-ahead to a Black Adam solo movie anchored by Johnson, despite the Adam character himself being relatively obscure in the larger pantheon of DC comic book characters. Then again, the same could be said for Shazam, so perhaps having Johnson’s Black Adam step into the spotlight first will help to better build general interest in the former’s own solo movie.
As for Black Adam’s ability to carry a solo film: Johnson has said many times over that the reason he chose to play Black Adam rather than Shazam is because he feels the former has a richer backstory and is overall more compelling, by comparison. The fact that Black Adam is getting a spinoff movie of his own only further bolsters the argument that the future of the DCEU will be decided by DC villains and antiheroes, not DC superheroes. Indeed, with a Black Adam film, Suicide Squad spinoff Gotham City Sirens and Doug Liman’s Justice League Dark all being on the way now, the basic fabric of the DCEU might soon be noticeably different than that for any other superhero cinematic universe that is currently out there.

Fans of DC’s Captain Marvel have undergone what can only amount to a badly-paced emotional rollercoaster since the future of the DC Movie Universe began to take shape. Even before some Justice League members had their solo films (or stars) in place, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson had let the cat out of the bag concerning his own upcoming superhero role. His star power would do plenty to anchor the DCEU’s Shazam movie, but he would be doing so as the superhero’s arch-enemy: Black Adam.
At the time, audiences were still used to the one-and-done supervillain formula, and wondered if a non-hero role would be a missed opportunity. But Johnson’s enthusiasm for the role grew, and before long it became clear that whoever landed the title role, Shazam would only be the first appearance of Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’ in the DC Movie Universe – not the last. Apparently, no Shazam actor is needed at all, with the latest news that Johnson will star in his very own solo film: Black Adam.







The news caused concern among some general superhero fans, since a movie focusing on a comic book supervillain – playing the hero of the story – was unconventional, at best. At worst, another sign that DC’s unexpected direction with talent and characters was doomed to fail. But for the well-versed DC fans, the concerns were just as present before the announcement, wondering how a Shazam film could truly do justice to a villain as complex and justified as Black Adam. A solo film… that might make a lot more sense.
Not just to breathe some fresh air into a formulaic genre, and not just to give Dwayne Johnson the time needed to show why Adam is more intriguing than most villains (OR heroes). Given where WB and the DCEU have placed their time and energy in fleshing out the heroes and villains of their movie universe, a Black Adam introduction doesn’t just make sense – it could make the inevitable Shazam movie even better.
[h=2]Introduce Magic To The DCEU[/h]

Some may read that heading and think that Suicide Squad kicked the door to magic in the DCEU wide open, and with less than stellar results. While it’s true that Squad focused on an antagonist tied to otherworldly and mystical forces, the film itself made it clear that the Enchantress was a being from another dimension, once worshipped as a god by humanity in its distant, ancient past. If Squad proves anything, it’s that the task of establishing the more mystical, cosmic, demonic, or magical facets of the DCEU is far from over – and can be done better.


Instead of having to worry about matching a modern tone with the ancient gods of mythic history, Black Adam can begin at the beginning. Follow Adam as a member of an ancient Egyptian (or ‘Khandaqian’) civilization as he is ushered into the mysterious Circle of Eternity, where a council of mystical figureheads select a champion of Earth to be blessed with “the living lightning” and become a demigod overnight. We already know Justice League will anchor modern films to pre-history, so a similar level of spectacle and wonder is to be hoped for. Not to mention room to shape a Shazam mythology without having to force it into a larger DCEU continuity.

It’s a rich and inclusive mythology spanning a number of world cultures, regions, and traditions, but also runs the risk of leaping too quickly into lighthearted stories like Percy Jackson or Harry Potter. If it’s first seen from a child’s point of view, that risk increases. But with a strong, stoic, adult slave being chosen the tone and style of the magic matures. It also allows a stronger contrast when Adam reaches the present day: his confusion at mankind surviving without magic hits even stronger if the audience has seen it…. and seen the tragic story that convinced the wizard Shazam to deny the world another champion for millennia.
[h=2]Tell an Origin Story That’s (Actually) Tragic[/h]

By now, everyone knows that superhero origin story: some tragic event leads our hero to achieve the goodness and greatness in the outside world that they hold within, acquire a special ability, struggle with a conflict, falter, regain faith, and win the day. It’s the story of Superman, Captain America, even Ant-Man and Hulk. Let us say it plainly: that is not the story of Black Adam. No his is a story of a slave forced to watch as his loved ones are killed, powerless to stop it. And when he gains access to powers well beyond mere humans, and far greater than the pharaoh responsible for his loss, he metes out righteous vengeance on all responsible.
Dwayne Johnson has often mentioned this slave origin story as part of what makes Adam such a compelling superhero – there is no ‘happy ending’ for him, and he carries his pain and anger for eternity. Now, exactly how he gets those powers, and how he puts them to use varies a bit depending on the version of the story. Black Adam was first introduced as a formulaic ‘bad guy,’ turning his powers to evil. But there are two modern looks at Black Adam’s origin that will likely act as source material… considering that Geoff Johns and David S. Goyer wrote them.

The first story, told in the pages of JSA (1999) saw members of the Justice Society travel back to ancient Egypt and encounter Teth-Adam blessed with his powers, but serving the noble Prince Khufu as part of his inner circle. Having been chosen as the wizard Shazam’s rightful champion, Adam was busy serving the Prince when his home nation was invaded, and his family killed. And it isn’t long afterwards that he finds the villain responsible, beginning down his path of darkness.




The other, New 52 instalment of Black Adam might be a bit harder to swing for a “fun, optimistic superhero movie.” In this version, it’s Adam’s nephew who’s chosen to be the wizard’s champion, and chooses to share the lightning with his uncle. But when Adam sees only compassion, mercy, and optimism in the boy, he kills him to claim all the power for himself. From there, he begins a terrible campaign to kill those who enslave the people of Khandaq in all forms.

[h=2]Show Black Adam is More Than ‘Shazam’s Villain’[/h]

The simple fact that Black Adam is a killer, a conqueror, and a ruthless warrior, but only in service of his country so that those who enslave and torment will not live to continue, and its people may be free makes him a more complicated character than most. The comics had traditionally categorized Black Adam as “a villain, but with his own motivations and code,” but modern storylines haven’t been so quick to define him. In the modern era, Adam has become a hero of wish fulfillment for many: ignoring diplomacy, killing terrorists and tyrants, and refusing to put anything ahead of his people’s best interest. He’s an extremist, but when the people he’s effortlessly killing would have killed innocents, things become all manner of shades of grey.







If his interests are aligned, or his people protected, Adam has had successful careers working alongside the Justice Society, the Suicide Squad, and even the Justice League in efforts to save all of Earth’s inhabitants. And, in his defense, he comes from a time in which the punishment for a serious crime was death – and not as quick as he usually delivers. Timelines and sentences aside, it is very hard to see Adam as a villain when foreign criminals bring him a kidnapped woman as a peace offering… only to have their heads crushed.
Not for harming the woman, but for assuming his favor could be so easily bought. You want Adam to do what he does, but only to a limit, and only when it’s fitting. The problem is: he’s a god, and can do what he likes.

The point is, Adam is all of those things centuries before Shazam becomes a superhero. His identity is not actually defined by Billy Batson’s own story, it’s the other way around. The DCEU has already made efforts to give their supervillains actual motivations, based in personal trauma (Zod’s entire purpose was to see Krypton survive, Lex Luthor wanted to expose the fallacy of an “all-powerful, all good God”). And if Batman got a crash course in the dangers of extremism, Black Adam can take things to a whole new level.
If Adam must kill a thousand guilty souls to save ten innocent ones, he will do it. And that is the kind of character that an satisfying, action-packed, unorthodox, and problematic superhero origin story can be built around. When all is said and done, people might want Black Adam to break free of the wizard’s prison. They might see problems in the modern world that only he is strong enough to solve, the hard way.
[h=2]Make Shazam The Newcomer To Adam & The Audience[/h]

Keep in mind that, if a Black Adam movie tells the kind of story mentioned above, the introduction of Billy Batson is a completely different kind of story. For starters, not everybody will be on the side of the wizard Shazam, since not all will agree that Black Adam should have been locked up for eternity. Regardless, watching Adam lose everything, and still find the strength to remove tyrants, and safeguard his people through any means defines him as a leader – whether or not he’s one you would want to follow.
Enter Billy Batson: a kid who is chosen to be the next champion of Shazam, transforms into every bit the superhero, and puts it to use entertaining his friends, getting revenge on bullies, and generally wasting his powers the way any child would, if made Superman for a day. When the story begins with Billy, that wish fulfillment and light tone is intended, and Black Adam seems a power-hungry, stereotypical villain. But if the DCEU establishes Adam as a whole, understood (if extreme) character first, then the audience can find compelling threads on either side of the conflict.
Sure, who wouldn’t want to be Superman? And honestly, Black Adam doesn’t have a patent on the powers, or they wouldn’t have been given to the kid in the first place. But is the power best used by someone who has no personal temptations? Should such power be entrusted to a child, or someone be willing to kill the world’s most terrible and merciless leaders, carrying the moral and legal burden for the greater good?

Certainly, the idea that Black Adam and Shazam would treat the material with a “mature” mindset will have detractors convinced that no story, no matter how whimsical, is too lighthearted to survive DC’s darkness. But the content remains as fantastic as ever where Billy Batson and Shazam are concerned. So is it really a bad thing to make his antagonist a more complicated, persuasive figure? At this point, we’ll take a “villain” defined as such for doing what heroes won’t over one bent on world domination any day of the week.

Dwayne Johnson: Black Adam & Shazam Movies Part of DCEU World Building

Not long ago, Warner Bros. brought Dwayne Johnson into the fold of the DC Extended Universe, offering him the role of Black Adam. While he was initially set to be the villain in Shazam!, the project’s slow development and Johnson’s enormous popularity gave rise to his own solo feature, Black Adam.
Even with Johnson in the lead role, news regarding the project has been scant, but the actor recently revealed that both Black Adam and Shazam! are intended to be two parts of a much larger whole.
MTV spoke to Johnson about his involvement with Warner Bros. and the DCEU, and the actor addressed the question with enthusiasm regarding the still-growing cinematic universe and the potential for his role in it. Johnson said:

“We’ve had great discussions with Geoff Johns over at DC. This is a really fun, cool time for DC right now because they’re world-building. We’re seeing that with Wonder Woman and Aquaman. We have a few surprises down the line. So what we decided to do was to create a scenario where Black Adam has his stand-alone movie, and Captain Marvel, Shazam, has his stand-alone movie. We’re building our world that way, and then we can come together at some point.”

As if Johnson’s promise to help build out the DCEU was not enough, he also teased that a big announcement regarding Black Adam is on the horizon. This could be the announcement of a director for the film, or even a potential release date, which would mean the movie is inching ever closer to the start of production. Black Adam is a new project that was not included on the studio’s original slate, so Warners will likely want to garner fan excitement by announcing when they expect it to bow in theaters. On the other hand, Johnson’s news may pertain to the character making his debut in another upcoming superhero film first.
That said, with Johnson being one of the busiest men in Hollywood, it is difficult to find a time for him to work in his DCEU role in the immediate future. He is currently out promoting The Fate of the Furious and has both Baywatch and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle coming later this year. He is already scheduled to film Rampage and Skyscraper throughout the rest of 2017, so it may not be until 2019 before Black Adam sees the big screen — and that’s assuming Warner Bros. isn’t planning to release four Batman-related movies.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson confirms Adam Sztykiel will be writing the script for Black Adam. Warner Bros. launched their unofficially titled DC Extended Universe with Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 – a follow-up to the filmmaker’s 2013 film, Man of Steel – and they continued expanding the newly-formed shared universe with David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman. And while the studio has already planned out the next few years, Johnson’s Black Adam may squeeze in at some point.
Johnson revealed his involvement with Warner Bros.’ DC universe in 2014 when he confirmed that he was cast as the supervillain Teth-Adam, aka Black Adam. For those that don’t know, Black Adam is the archenemy of Shazam (formerly known as Captain Marvel). Despite David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! film moving forward, Johnson will not be making his debut as the titular villain in that flick but will rather be headlining his own solo movie before facing off against Billy Batson’s superhero half – and Sztykiel reportedly signed on to write the script for that standalone film.


Johnson confirmed on Twitter today that Sztykiel, who recently co-wrote Brad Peyton’s Rampage movie, will be penning the story for the Black Adam film. The actor went on to exclaim his excitement for the character and the movie, saying, “This character’s in my bones. Ruthless code.” Update: Johnson has posted on Twitter again, saying Sztykiel’s DCEU vision was “extremely impressive,” which is why he got the job in the first place.

What’s interesting about Johnson’s tweet, though, is that he describes Black Adam as a gritty anti-hero, not a supervillain. While the character has dabbled in heroics before, he’s primarily a villain first and foremost. Although Black Adam started out his career as an adversary to DC’s Captain Marvel, he’s been redefined in recent years under the leadership of DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns, who’s now running Warner Bros.’ DC Films division. And given that anti-heroes and villains doing good things seems to be on the studio’s mind, it makes sense that they would want to give the character his own story, while also allowing him to explore his heroic side. That would also explain Black Adam’s absence from the Shazam! film.
At the moment, it’s unconfirmed when Johnson will finally make his debut as Black Adam, though he has promised a surprising introduction. Recent reports suggest that Johnson will appear as the character in Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2, thus allowing a brief introduction to his Egyptian past before being spun-off into his own adventure. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens, but for now, the Black Adam movie seems to be moving smoothly behind-the-scenes.

Dwayne Johnson believes that his upcoming Black Adam movie should start filming in 2019. Johnson initially signed on to play the DC Comics supervillain-turned-anti-hero as part of Warner Bros.’ unofficially titled DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in 2014, but things have been slow going ever since. Up until last year, it was believed that Johnson would play the antagonist in David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! film, which is slated to release in 2019. But that didn’t turn out to be the case.
Kingsman and Sherlock Holmes actor Mark Strong is actually playing Shazam!‘s titular villain, Doctor Sivana. And instead of appearing in next year’s DCEU installment, Johnson will first appear in a solo Black Adam movie before eventually facing off against the superhero Shazam, played by Zachary Levi. At the moment, the Black Adam movie is without a director, but it recently received a script from Rampage scribe Adam Sztykiel. And it seems that the powers that be behind the project are happy with what Sztykiel delivered, for they are now looking to enter production sometime next year.


In an interview with Yahoo Movies for his latest film, Rampage, Dwayne Johnson briefly discussed Warner Bros.’ production plans for DC’s Black Adam movie, saying that the film should start rolling cameras in 2019 if everything goes according to plan. He said: “The script came in, it’s great, we’re working on it. If things come together in the way we anticipate them coming together, that feels like a 2019 movie, in production.” Johnson also discussed his and DC Films’ hopes for the movie and properly serving the source material:

“Marvel is doing such an incredible job of universe building and building out … and DC is doing a great job finding the footing and tone of their movies, certainly with like Wonder Woman, for example. I look forward to James Wan’s movie that’s coming out, with Aquaman. So, Black Adam is this phenomenal opportunity for us to nail the tone, make sure that he’s badass, make sure that we’re serving the mythology properly, but then, also make sure that we can have intrinsic DNA tied to a lot of other properties in DC. So, it’s not an easy thing to do, but I think we’re going to nail it.”

Although DC’s Black Adam movie seems to be progressing smoothly behind the scenes with cameras expected to roll in 2019, that doesn’t mean comic book fans will have to wait until 2020 (or whenever the movie releases) in order to see Dwayne Johnson’s introduction as Teth-Adam in the DCEU. Last year, Johnson said that he had been discussing with DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns about when and where to introduce Black Adam, and the actor said that they have “a really cool surprise” regarding the character’s introduction.
The most likely option is that Black Adam will show up in Shazam!, but that won’t necessarily be a surprise. Comic book fans would expect Johnson to appear in that film, especially since he’s signed on as an executive producer. But what may surprise general audiences is a potential appearance in Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2. Black Adam has appeared in the Suicide Squad comics before, and it’s been reported that Task Force X could be seen hunting down Teth-Adam in the upcoming sequel film. That would certainly qualify as a surprise introduction, at least for non-comic book fans. But we’ll just have to wait and see what happens on that end. For now, DC’s Black Adam movie seems to be targeting a 2019 filming start date.

[h=1]Black Adam Movie Script Reportedly Features Hawkman & Stargirl[/h]


Dwayne Johnson's DC anti-hero may fight Hawkman and the Justice Society of America in his solo Black Adam movie. Back when Warner Bros. was still etching out the original plans for a DC shared universe, one of their earliest moves was getting Johnson to join as Black Adam. He was originally going to be the villain of the upcoming (and currently being praised) Shazam!, but the decision was made to give the god-like character a movie of his own first.
The Black Adam solo film was announced back in 2017, but there has yet to be any major movement on it. This is partially thanks to Johnson's incredibly busy schedule not being able to find time for the movie, but also because they are still working on the script. Adam Szytkiel was hired to write a new scriptfor Black Adam near the end of 2017. Any and all plot details have remained under wraps so far, but now we may know that a few DC heroes will be mixing it up with the protector of Khandaq.


According to That Hashtag Show, Szytkiel recently turned in an updated draft of his Black Adam script and it includes Hawkman in a major role. The studios will look to cast an actor between 30-39 years old who can believably stand opposite of Johnson. In addition to Hawkman, Black Adam will also reportedly include his fellow JSA members Stargirl and Atom Smasher, and they will look for an actress and actor between 20-29 to play them. Hawkman has previously appeared on Legends of Tomorrow, while Stargirl has her own series coming to DC Universe.

Carter Hall aka Hawkman is an archeologist who is the reborn soul of Prince Khufu, an ancient Egyptian, and one of DC's oldest heroes. He was created in 1940 by Gardner Fox and Dennis Neville and is a founding member of the JSA, along with his star-crossed love Chay-Ara aka Hawkgirl. Even though they are rarely apart in the comics, there is currently no word on if Black Adam's script includes her or not. Black Adam and Hawkman's history goes all the way back to ancient Egypt, so there is plenty of source material for Szytkiel and a future director to mine to make this confrontation possible.

The inclusion of Stargirl and Atom Smasher is a nice surprise for Black Adam, and one that could help the JSA to be formed in the not too distant future - if it isn't already. Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl and Albert Rothstein aka Atom Smasher are usually romantically involved in the comics, which is likely why they're paired together here. But, Atom Smasher has also been a close friend to Black Adam, with the pair leaving the JSA at one point together and teaming up. Although this information is not yet confirmed, they could be the DC characters Johnson previously teased will be included. And as long as Black Adam's script doesn't change too much before filming begins, then DC fans should get ready to see Hawkman, Stargirl, and Atom Smasher on the big screen in the future.

Warner Bros. and DC Films are steadily moving ahead with their Worlds of DC franchise, recovering from the stutter steps in its early days of divisive movies like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice andSuicide Squad. However, with Aquaman topping $1 billion at the box office and some Shazam! reviews naming it the best DC movie of recent years, the franchise is no doubt recovering.
Further proof of Warner Bros. and DC Films solidifying their vision for the franchise's future is their upcoming slate of films. From the alternative universeJoker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and the Birds Of Prey spinoff to sequels Wonder Woman 1984 and Aquaman 2, the studio has plenty of exciting projects in the works. However, given all the various properties Warner Bros. and DC put into development over the last few years, there are still many that haven't moved forward in quite some time. One of these is theBlack Adam movie, which already has Dwayne Johnson attached to star. Now, the movie takes a significant step forward.


Both Variety and Observer report that Warner Bros. and DC Films are eyingThe Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra to shepherd the Johnson-led comic book movie. Previously, Collet-Serra was the frontrunner to direct the Suicide Squad sequel before passing on the project to work on Disney's The Jungle Cruise, which Johnson also stars in. Warner Bros. has since tappedGuardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn for The Suicide Squad. But it seems Collet-Serra may work on a DC movie after all. Varietyfurther reports that the Black Adam movie is a priority for the studio after the success of Shazam! earlier this year.
Johnson's Black Adam was originally slated to debut in Shazam! but was eventually separated out for his own solo movie. In 2017, there were rumorsBlack Adam would appear in Suicide Squad 2, but that was back when Gavin O'Connor was writing and directing the sequel. As for the Black Adammovie, writer Adam Sztykiel was tapped in October 2017 to pen the script, but with no director and Johnson's busy filming schedule, it was unclear when the movie would go before cameras. Should Collet-Serra officially join the project,Black Adam may film next year as Johnson most recently teased, and hit theaters in the coming years.


Considering his work with Johnson on Jungle Cruise and his history of almost working with Warner Bros. and DC Films on another superhero project, Collet-Serra seems a good choice for Black Adam. Further, Black Adam will give Collet-Serra a chance to work with Johnson and Sztykiel to develop the character for his first big screen appearance in this universe, rather than a sequel to another director's already established vision as Suicide Squad 2would've been. Dwayne Johnson confirms that Black Adam will start filming in July 2020. Johnson has become one of the most sought after actors in the last few years and he will soon be stepping into the role of Black Adam for DC's upcoming film. Black Adam is Shazam's arch-nemesis, who made his comic book debut in 1945 and will soon be making his first live-action appearance in the next few years.
When Shazam! first went into development, it was widely believed that Black Adam would be the main villain in the film. In 2017, it was revealed that this was not the case and instead, Black Adam would get a solo movie before facing off against Shazam. Doctor Sivana (played by Mark Strong) was chosen as the villain for the first solo Shazam! movie and it appears that Mister Mind will be the villain in the sequel. It was previously reported that Shazam! 2 was expected to start filming in 2020 and now it looks like Black Adam will start filming around the same time.



When thanking a fan for making a 1/5 scale model of him as Black Adam,Johnson expressed his enthusiasm for the project and confirmed that Black Adam will start filming in July 2020. The artist's original tweet, as well as Johnson's response, can be seen below:

Fans have been waiting for years to see Johnson as Black Adam, but they have only gotten a few updates since Johnson's initial casting announcement. Since then, Jaume Collet-Serra has signed on to direct Black Adam, with Adam Sztykiel writing the film's script. Black Adam is also rumored to be making an appearance in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, but there have been conflicting reports on the matter. Black Adam will begin filming around the same time as Shazam! 2, but Zachary Levi has previously stated that Black Adam won't meet Shazam until Shazam! 3.


Black Adam had been put on the back burner for quite sometime, but DC still seems to have big plans for the characterin their ever-growing superhero universe. Johnson confirmed in 2014 that he was playing Black Adam, but DC decided to focus on introducing Shazam first. Black Adam looks to still be a few years away since production doesn't even start until next year, however; superhero fans should be relieved to hear that the project is still moving forward.

Dwayne Johnson confirms Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and more will be part of the Justice Society of America roster in Black Adam. It's been more than a decade since The Rock agreed to join the DC Universe to play the anti-hero/villain Black Adam. Instead of his first appearance coming as the villain in Shazam!, the plan was changed to give Johnson a Black Adam solo movie first.

Even though Black Adam will be mostly focused on Johnson's titular DC character, there will be several superheroes from the comics. He previously confirmed that the Justice Society of America would be introduced in the movie, but it wasn't clear how this would be done. It was also not revealed which characters will be part of the initial roster, at least at first. Noah Centineo was recently announced to play Atom Smasher in Black Adam to help set up the JSA, and now the full roster of characters is confirmed.




During Black Adam's panel for DC FanDome, Johnson confirmed the other members of the JSA who will appear alongside Atom Smasher. He confirmed Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Cyclone will be part of the team and encounter Black Adam during the course of the movie. Concept art released from the panel even showed Black Adam flying away from the team.


This isn't the first time that Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Cyclone have been linked to Black Adam, as they were all previously rumored to appear in the film. For those who might not be up to date on DC Comics, here's a quick rundown of who these characters are. Carter Hall aka Hawkman is the Prince Khufu Kha-Tarr who is reborn every time he dies with no memory of his past lives. Khalid Nassour aka Doctor Fate is an Egyptian-American student who finds the Helmet of Fate, giving him a wide array of magical abilities. Maxine Hunkel aka Cyclone is the granddaughter of a former JSA member and has the ability to control the wind.

Now that the complete lineup for the JSA has been announced for Black Adam, fans can finally rest assured knowing how the team will look in the movie. Unfortunately, there were no more casting announcements about who will play the JSA characters. This could change soon, though, since Atom Smasher is already cast, so Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Cyclone could be found before too long. But, Johnson has played it coy regarding the actual role that they will play. The panel made it sound like Black Adam and the JSA could work together and be enemies all within the same movie potentially. Either way, Black Adam could be just the beginning of the roles Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Cyclone have in the DCEU.

Noah Centineo Confirmed As Atom Smasher In DC’s Black Adam


The Black Adam movie panel for DC FanDome finally confirms Dwayne Johnson's first co-star, Noah Centineo, and that he'll play Atom Smasher.



Noah Centineo is confirmed to play Atom Smasher in DC's Black Adam. Warner Bros. and DC Films have spent the last several years developing an exciting slate of movies for the DC Extended Universe, but nothing has been in the works for as long as Black Adam. Dwayne Johnson joined DC to play the powerful anti-hero over a decade ago, and after some sizable changes to the plan, he'll now make his debut as Black Adam in a solo film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

The Black Adam movie hasn't been in development for as long as Johnson has been attached to play the character, but it was still over three years ago when the movie was first announced. Prior to coronavirus likely delaying the start of production, Black Adam was on track to begin filming this year ahead of a December 2021 release date. With filming rapidly approaching, that meant that Johnson needed to find some co-stars for his DC movie. It was reported that Noah Centineo could be one of his fellow cast members, and now that has been confirmed.


During Black Adam's panel at DC FanDome, Centineo made a surprise appearance so he and Johnson could confirm his addition to the film. Centineo was confirmed to play Al Rothstein, aka Atom Smasher, a member of the Justice Society of America in the comics and movie. This marked the first official announcement that Centineo will play Atom Smasher in Black Adam, as he, Johnson, WB, or DC didn't comment on the previous reports.



Since news of Centineo playing Atom Smasher in Black Adam was somewhat expected, he and Johnson also teased some of the work already being done to bring Atom Smasher to life. Centineo discussed his interest in the character was because he felt Al has something to prove coming from a lineage where his grandfather was a villain. He also highlighted the workout regimen he is on to get in superhero shape, something he already teased on social media. Even though Centineo has yet to suit up as Atom Smasher, Johnson did tease that he's seen pre-viz of how it will look when Black Adam is near Atom Smasher's enlarged form and that fans should be excited to see it eventually.

Of course, the confirmation of Atom Smasher wasn't the only piece of news Black Adam's DC FanDome panel confirmed. Johnson previously announced that the Justice Society of America would play a part in the movie, which helped explain Atom Smasher's role. But, the rest of the JSA roster wasn't revealed before. Johnson used the panel to confirm Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Cyclone as the other members of the JSA opposite Atom Smasher. Even though Centineo as Atom Smasher is the only one cast, the rest of Black Adam cast could be announced soon.

Black Adam Movie Casts Justice Society Superhero Cyclone


Quintessa Swindell, star of Netflix's Trinkets, has officially been cast to play the superhero Cyclone alongside Dwayne Johnson in Black Adam.



Quintessa Swindell has officially been cast to play the DC hero Cyclone in the Dwayne Johnson-led Black Adam film. Swindell made a name for themselves in 2019 on the Netflix teen drama series Trinkets. They will join Black Adam as a member of the Justice Society of America.

Since its initial announcement, Black Adam has been one of the most hotly anticipated of DC’s planned superhero films. After the incredibly positive reception to Shazam! – which broke the streak of critical bombs that included Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad – fans have looked excitedly to Johnson’s introduction to the world of DC and continued onscreen construction of the Justice Society of America. Though Black Adam has been indefinitely delayed from its planned December 2021 release date, the project remains in the works.


According to Dwayne Johnson himself, Quintessa Swindell is now officially a part of that project as Cyclone. "Can’t wait to work with them and we ready to rumble in the DC jungle," Johnson wrote on Twitter in a warm welcome to Swindell. They will join Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher and Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman in the growing Justice Society, which will likely stand in opposition to Johnson’s Black Adam. Given the character’s anti-hero status, it remains to be seen how all the different classic DC characters will fit together onscreen.



One of the bigger mysteries surrounding Black Adam is how it will connect to the greater DCEU. Shazam! made numerous references to the other films in the connected universe. Still, it also didn’t feature any of the actors from those films, leading some to wonder if the movie might be in an independent timeline, like Joker. As DC moves closer and closer toward a full-on multiverse model that unites different film universes, HBO Max series, and the Arrowverse, tracing the connective tissue between other properties has only grown more confusing. Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia has said that Black Adam will indeed connect to the DCEU somehow, but the details have yet to be revealed.

While fans wait for more specifics on the plot and context of Black Adam, the casting announcement of Swindell as Cyclone is at least some great news to tide them over. Cyclone plays a significant role in the Justice Society through the comics, and Swindell should make an excellent addition to an ensemble cast that keeps getting more exciting. If Black Adam and Shazam! end up moving toward a full-on Justice Society movie; audiences will see a lot more Cyclone in the future.
