Actor Stephen Lang has confirmed that a sequel to Don’t Breathe is in the works. The orginal horror thriller released in 2016, where it proved to be a solid hit with critics and audiences alike. Tallying an impressive 87% fresh rating with Rotten Tomatoes, it pulled in over $157 million on a budget of just under $10 million. With numbers like that, a follow-up was all but inevitable.Don’t Breathe told the story of three young thieves (Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto) who attempt to rob a blind Gulf War veteran (Lang) after he’s received a significant settlement from a car accident that resulted in the death of his daughter. The burglars soon find that they’re in over their heads with their would-be victim, who’s not nearly the easy target they assumed him to be. Their robbery attempt becomes a battle for survival, as the Blind Man has even more secrets to protect than he does cash in his safe. We’ve heard grumblings of a possible Don’t Breathe 2 before, but in Screen Rant‘s recent sitdown with Stephen Lang, the star confirmed the rumors. When we asked if any sequel or prequel talks had taken place, Lang confidently responded, “Oh yeah, we’re doing a sequel.” Since horror movies are often produced on reduced budgets, sequels are more common than they are with any other film genre. Even if the original film doesn’t really leave the door open for a follow-up, movie studios usually find a way to make them happen. Thankfully, that’s not the case with Don’t Breathe, whose ending (SPOILER ALERT) saw Jane Levy’s Rocky escape Lang’s Blind Man with the stolen cash in tow. She left his home believing that he’d died as a result of their encounter, but in the closing moments of the film, Rocky learned that the Blind Man was indeed alive thanks to a conveniently timed news report she happened to see as she was skipping town.Director Fede Álvarez and producer Sam Raimi have previously expressed excitement over the idea of a Don’t Breathe 2, with the latter referring to their plans for a follow-up as “only the greatest idea for a sequel that I’ve ever heard! I’m not kidding!” Time will tell if the sequel manages to live up to the 2016 original, but given the enthusiasm of those involved, it sounds like Don’t Breathe 2 will be a project to keep an eye out for. No production start date or release date has been announced as of yet.

[h=1]Don't Breathe 2 Has a Script; Fede Alvarez May Not Direct[/h]

Fede Alvarez says that Don't Breathe 2 has a script and that he intends to get the sequel made, whether he ends up directing it or not. Alvarez confirmed that he had an idea for a Don't Breathe sequel shortly after the original movie hit theaters, all the way back in late August 2016. Sam Raimi, who produced the first movie, even described Alvarez's idea for Don't Breathe 2 as "the greatest idea for a sequel that I've ever heard". However, he also cast doubt on the idea that it will ever happen, for the same reason.
Don't Breathe was very much a commercial success and took in $157 million at the global box office, against a production budget of just under $10 million. Shortly after the film hit theaters, Alvarez signed on to direct The Girl in the Spider's Web (a revival of the Lisbeth Salander series, aka. the Millennium franchise) and has spent the last couple of years working on that film ever since. However, now that Spider's Web is finished and ready to hit theaters next week, Alvarez is starting to shift his attention to the projects he's been keeping on the back-burner of late - the Don't Breathe sequel included.

Alvarez spoke about two such projects - Don't Breathe 2 and a sequel to his
Evil Deadreboot - during an interview with MovieWeb to promote Spider's Web's release. Between the pair of them, Alvarez indicated that the Don't Breathe sequel was more likely to happen first, simply because it already has a screenplay ready to go. He also acknowledged that Don't Breathe 2 is the more interesting project for him from a creative perspective and that he wants to get the ball rolling on the film sooner than later - even if it means he's unable to direct it himself:

It doesn't mean that we won't make them. And that I make them might not be that I'm directing, but I might be producing. They're just ideas right now. Nothing to announce officially. We do have a script for Don't Breathe 2. That's the only difference. We don't have a script for Evil Dead 2. But we do have a script for Don't Breathe 2 that we wrote. Once I'm done with [The Girl in the Spider's Web] we're gonna start thinking of ways to bring that story to the screen. Me directing or me producing. It really depends on the time that we'll have. I'm particularly excited about that because it's a really different sequel, when it comes to sequels. It's a very different approach and I'm excited about that.

The original Don't Breathe was a subversive home invasion thriller that followed three young thieves - including, Evil Dead's Jane Levy as the protagonist Rocky - as they try to rob a blind old man's house, only to discover that the old man is far more dangerous than he appears... and is hiding a very sick and twisted secret, no less. Ultimately, Rocky manages to escape the house alive and seemingly kill the old man during the film's climax (her companions having already been murdered along the way), only for the final scene to reveal that the elderly fellow was able to survive their last encounter.
While Don't Breathe 2 could easily wind up being a rehash of the first movie (albeit, with the blind old man invading Rocky's house, this time around), Alvarez has long maintained that he has something far more inventive than a mere recycling of the original film's plot in mind. The Blind Man, as he's listed in Don't Breathe's credits, made for a pretty memorable antagonist (thanks in no small part to Stephen Lang's performance) and it would certainly be interesting to see what Alvarez has in mind for both the character and Rocky in the sequel. However, because Alvarez is also attached to direct the Jim Henson Company's Labyrinth sequel right now, that may force him to hand the directing reins over to someone else - lest Don't Breathe 2 find itself on the back-burner once again.

We will bring you more details on Don't Breathe 2 as they become available.

Don't Breathe 2 Gets August 2021 Release Date

Don’t Breathe 2, the sequel to the 2016 runaway horror hit, gets a release date, with the movie slated to hit theaters in August 2021.

Sony has announced Don't Breathe 2 will be released in August 2021. The film is a sequel to the 2016 runaway horror hit Don't Breathe, starring Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, and Stephen Lang. Filmed under just a budget of $10 million, the film made over $150 million at the box office and received a 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

All of that success seems to have paid off now, as Sony announced that the sequel Don't Breathe 2 will be releasing on August 13, 2021. Fede Álvarez, who won the approval of horror fans with his twisted modern update of Evil Dead, will not be returning to the director chair. Co-writer and Álvarez's longtime collaborator, Rodo Sayagues, will instead be making his directorial debut with this one.

While fans of the original are hesitant that Álvarez's absence as director will hurt Don't Breathe 2, there's much to look forward to, not least because horror fans are starved for some good old-fashioned fright cinema. Despite most productions being forced to shut down, the film, shot in Serbia, carried on, with Lang confirming on his Twitter that he had wrapped his scenes for the sequel.

So far, only Lang is confirmed to return in Don't Breathe 2, reprising his role as the Blind Man. Likewise, plot details for the sequel have been kept under wraps. In the original film, three friends (Levy, Minnette, and Zovatto) break into the home of a blind veteran (Lang) to steal money they know to be inside the home. The trio is in for a rude awakening, though, when they realize that just because the man can't see doesn't mean he doesn't know how to fight back.
