While Warner Bros. and DC Comics are beginning to flesh out their cinematic universe with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice next year, on the television side, The CW is also expanding its shared DC universe. During season 2 of Arrow, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) was introduced before appearing on his own show, The Flash, last fall.

The Flash debuted to The CW’s best premiere ratings since 2008 and has since featured highly-rated crossovers with its predecessor Arrow. Now, The CW is developing a third series in its DC universe that will include previously established characters as well as some that will be new to TV.

Deadline is reporting a new spinoff is in the works at The CW that is being described as a “superhero team-up show” which will feature characters from both Arrow and The Flash. Brandon Routh and Caity Lotz of Arrow are set to star with The Flash’s Victor Garber and Wentworth Miller. Additionally, the series will reportedly include three DC Comics characters who have never before appeared on a TV series.

Greg Berlanti, co-creator of Arrow and The Flash, will executive produce the series with Flash co-creator Andrew Kreisberg, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim, and Warner Bros. executive Sarah Schechter. Reportedly, the spinoff may be ordered direct to series and debut early in 2016.

Routh, Garber, and Miller are expected to reprise their roles as Ray Palmer a.k.a. The Atom, Dr. Martin Stein, and Leonard Snart a.k.a. Captain Cold respectively. However, as Lotz’s character, Sara Lance a.k.a. Canary, was killed earlier in Arrow’s season 3 it’s unclear whether she will play the same character or a new superhero.

This series has long been in the works at The CW and has recently been alluded to both by members of the network as well as the shows themselves. Earlier this year, both CW President Mark Pedowitz and Guggenheim discussed the possibility of Routh appearing in a spinoff series. Additionally, the recent Firestorm-focused episode of The Flash seemed to indicate the show – and the network – was building to something more than a one-off episode.

However, what that “something more” could be is unclear at this point since this particular cast list leads to some major questions: How will Firestorm be featured if Robbie Amell’s character Ronnie Raymond (a.k.a. the other half of Martin Stein’s Firestorm) doesn’t appear? How can Lotz be included in the series when her character was killed off previously in the continuity?

The spinoff may heavily feature flashbacks or entirely take place prior to these characters’ introductions on Arrow and The Flash. Or, given the characters involved (that is, if Lotz does reprise her role as Canary), it’s also possible this spinoff series could be the “Justice League on TV” referenced by Arrow star Stephen Amell late last year. Or, since this particular cast – Routh Garber, Miller, and Lotz – have not interacted at all within The CW’s DC TV universe, the spinoff may feature separate arcs for each character.

Since so little is known about this spinoff aside from a few characters, it’s difficult to get a real sense for what the show will look like once it premieres. However, if the series doesn’t debut until 2016, there’s still plenty of time for The CW to confirm more actors/characters and announce an official premise for the spinoff.

The Flash airs Tuesdays @8pm on The CW. Arrow airs Wednesdays @8pm on The CW.

[h=1]‘Arrow/Flash’ Spinoff Team’s Final Roster Revealed?[/h]

It’s been known for some time that the ongoing strength of Arrow and the early success of The Flash meant that The CW was actively discussing plans for yet another spinoff series based on DC Comics characters. The first details concerning the spinoff in question claimed the inclusion of a blend of characters (living and dead) from both shows, leaving even devoted fans scratching their heads.

A new batch of details concerning the roles left to cast have arrived, providing some hints to those versed in DC Comics lore. With The Flash preparing to dive headlong into time travel, and previous claims that Booster Gold would likely appear on the small screen, it seems a time-hopping team-up is possibly in store.

Though no official details have been offered, TVLine reiterates the suspicion that the series will star Victor Garber (one half of Firestorm), Brandon Routh (Arrow‘s Ray Palmer), Caity Lotz (the late Canary), and Wentworth Miller (Flash villain Captain Cold). In addition, descriptions of the other three DC Comics characters expected to round out the cast (characters who have yet to be seen in live-action) are also now available.
[h=2]The Mystery Roles[/h]First up, a man known by the placeholder title ‘The Traveler’:

“THE TRAVELER” | Described as a “Han Solo-esque rogue who gets by with his charm, this hero hails from the future, and has journeyed back in time on a secret mission. His razor-sharp wit hides the pain of a man who has lived through serious conflict. He also harbors many secrets, always leaving both his teammates and the audience unsure of his true allegiances.

As badly as some comic fans (and Smallville enthusiasts) would like to hope that this role references Booster Gold, the description – and the claim that these heroes have not been adapted to TV already – implies that Rip Hunter is the most likely candidate. Despite the parallel timelines and realities of DC Comics, few heroes are tied directly to the art of time travel like Hunter – the man known by the title of ‘Time Master.’

The name itself is a moniker, meant to keep Hunter’s enemies from uncovering his true identity, and killing him as a child before he is able to take up his mission of maintaining or, in some cases, correcting the time stream. Where Booster Gold used time travel to return to the 21st Century and become a famous superhero, Rip Hunter travels from era to era in his efforts to keep the universe from chaos (though this new description sounds like a combination of both).

The long term viability of a DC Comics show following a time-jumping hero from one iconic setting to another is easy enough to grasp, and while not outright confirming Booster’s role, the presence of both time travel in The CW’s fiction and a character so closely tied to him is likely a sign of things to come.

The Traveler won’t be alone for the time being, joined by a young woman known by the straightforward title of ‘Female Warrior’:

“FEMALE WARRIOR” | This twentysomething Latina is pretty but unassuming, book smart and socially awkward by day. But by night, when she hears the cry of battle, her fury is ignited and she becomes a fierce warrior — so much so, that sometimes she can become a threat to others.

As readers can see, this Female Warrior could be any number of DC Comics heroines. The implied nature of her character and powers (concealed during the day, embraced at night) is too vague to be nailed down, but there are some possible contenders.

The fact that these three characters have yet to be seen in live-action is only worthy of note if they are well-known, or at least in moderate demand. But even that is hard to pin down with so vague a description: it could apply to Kendra Munoz-Saunders, the modern “Earth-2″ version of Hawkgirl (whose identity is a combination of Kendra and a reincarnated spirit), a heroine popular in DC’s animated universe, but could also apply to many other heroines.

The notion of an unassuming young woman being possessed by supernatural powers isn’t uncommon for DC: it’s the power behind Hawk & Dove (planned members of TNT’s Titans), a few members of the young superhero team Infinity, Inc. - even Wonder Woman’s daughter. Without more information on the character, it’s hard to offer a more informed guess – and the same is true of the third role:

“MYSTERY HERO” | An African-American male in his twenties will fill the role of a regular, street smart guy who unexpectedly gains powers, and then, as part of the team, regularly quips about the insanity of the situations.

Unfortunately, that description is about as bare-bones as a superhero origin story can get. Online speculation has already pointed to the electrically charged hero Static, given the character’s ethnicity and previous animated series, but with WB planning a live-action Static Shock program – and their willingness to create diverse casts where possible – it’s simply a guess.

What is clear is that the rumors all point to the next CW series being based on a team, not a star. And until more details are revealed, the inclusion of Sara Lance (Lotz), Leonard Snart (Miller) and Professor Martin Stein (Garber) - without Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) – is still more confusing than exciting. Booster Gold may play a part in the overall series (or universe to come), but it’s clear a large piece of the puzzle has yet to be revealed.

Will this new series be set in an alternate reality where Sara Lance was bound for a different fate? Will the series be set before or parallel to Arrow‘s timeline? The presence of Rip Hunter – time and universe enforcer – and a character whose existence defies such rules could prove telling. But would The CW be ambitious enough to break their own shared universe rules with just their third series?

We enjoy speculating about the future of The Flash/Arrow universe as much as anyone, but we welcome all theories and suspicions about the real identities of these new team members. So be sure to share them in the comments.

The Flash airs Tuesdays @8pm, Arrow Wednesdays @8pm on The CW.

[h=1]‘Arrow/Flash’ Spinoff Doesn’t Have A Title Yet; Will Air During Next Midseason[/h]

Fox’s Gotham may be its own standalone world focusing on self-contained origin stories of iconic Batman characters, and NBC’s Constantine may already be over, but that’s not slowing down the construction of a DC Comics shared TV universe. In fact, it’s already starting to explode.

On The CW, Arrow helped launch a new successful series based on The Flash, and potentially sharing the same world might be the upcoming CBS show Supergirl - which has already been picked up for a full season – and the upcoming TNT series, Titans. Andrew Kreisberg, executive producer on three of these series (and writer/showrunner on Arrow) isn’t stopping there though. He’s also helping develop an additional spinoff series for The CW’s programming, utilizing existing characters from Arrow and Flash, but details on this new series remain largely a mystery.

Kreisberg, alongside producer Greg Berlanti, are helping coordinate what we hope will become a shared DC TV universe that spans multiple networks. But, even if CBS and TNT keep their own programming as just that – their own – there’s no stopping the growth of a franchise just on The CW.

Robbie Amell as Firestorm

When Brandon Routh joined the cast of Arrow as a character who’d become the superhero known as Atom, the creators behind the show, including Marc Guggenheim, didn’t shy away from listing him as a potential character for his own spinoff. The same talk was heard from the Flash camp when they introduced Robbie Amell as Firestorm. And that’s (sort of) what’s happening.

An Arrow/Flash spinoff is in the works, described as a team-up that will embrace time-travel, a plot device about to be explored in The Flash. A few familiar faces have already been confirmed, including Routh, and the other half of Firestorm played by veteran actor Victor Garber, alongside Arrow’s Caity Lotz and Flash’s Wentworth Miller. A few new characters will join the main cast as well, but like the title of this series, they’ve not yet been named.

What we do know, from the words of Arrow star Stephen Amell this weekend at Kansas City’s Planet Comicon, is that the Arrow/Flash spinoff will air next year during the midseason, early 2016, so expect the beginnings for season 4 of Arrow and season 2 of Flash to help setup this third series.

Brandon Routh as Atom

With both current CW DC shows making an appearance at Hollywood’s PaleyFest 2015 this past week, Andrew Kreisberg answered quite a few questions about the second half of each show’s current season and the upcoming spinoff where he told Green Arrow TV on the red carpet that it won’t be long before we find out exactly how Caity Lotz’s Black Canary will be a part of this show given her … concluded storyline in Arrow.

“I think by the Spring, you’ll know. We want to keep some surprises going, but we’re really excited about that series…. just to add another leg to the tripod, and complete it. We’ll get to see some of the characters that we’ve seen and introduce a whole bunch of new characters, and show them all in a different way, and have the show really feel different. As different as Flash feels from Arrow, this new show will feel different from both of them.”

As for the title of the show, the creators and network are very unsure at this point and it seems the project came together pretty quickly and is going to be based on who they can sign, beginning with the names they locked down above.

“I don’t know. It’s still very early in the process on that. We had to make sure to get as much of the cast set as we could before we sat down to break this mega-series with all of these characters, rather than be do that and have people say they’re not interested.”

Does the idea of a team-up featuring both new and returning characters appeal to you? Should Robbie Amell’s Firestorm be a main character in this series as well? Would you rather see another popular DC Comics character lead their own third show on the CW Network?

[h=1]‘Flash’/’Arrow’ Spinoff to Feature Major Unused DC Villain[/h]

In the three years since Arrow debuted on The CW, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg’s DC TV empire has been growing at an impressive rate. Arrow spinoff The Flash is still only in its first season, but already there are plans for another spinoff within the same universe – and, the two producers are also in charge of CBS’s Supergirl TV show.

Whereas The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl are all clearly focused on one superhero in particular (with others dropping in for either guest or regular roles), the upcoming spinoff will be a team-up show featuring Ray Palmer AKA The Atom (Brandon Routh); Martin Stein AKA one half of Firestorm (Victor Garber); Leonard Snart AKA Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller); Sara Lance AKA Black Canary (Caity Lotz); and three other superheroes from DC comics who have’t yet been featured in either of the current shows.

According to a new Variety interview with Berlanti, Captain Cold will also be joined by a villain who’s brand new to the DC TV universe. The showrunner said that he wants the spinoff’s villain to be “distinct,” and that it will be a “big character who hasn’t been used yet.” As for the rest of the cast and the superheroes that have yet to be announced, Berlanti explained that the intention was to make the group as ragtag as possible.

“In picking them, it was very much about picking, ‘who are some of the most popular characters we’ve created?’ and also, tonally, who went with who? How disparate could we make it? And we’re also introducing these three new characters that we’re casting right now… I think it’s really important that we have another female hero on the show, and this one is really exciting. I can’t wait for people to find out — we just have to cast it right, as always. And then you want that Rat Pack-y kind of vibe of all this crew hanging out, as disparate and as different as they are.”

Casting calls for the spinoff have offered some very vague details about who the three new superheroes will be: a time traveler, a female warrior, and a mystery hero. The generic nature of the descriptions makes it hard to pin down exactly which comic book characters these are, though our best guess for the time traveller is Rip Hunter. Similarly there are a lot of “big” villains in the DC universe who haven’t yet appeared in Arrow or The Flash, though it’s possible that the spinoff’s new villain will be specifically an enemy of the Atom (for example, Chronos), Firestorm, or one of the other featured superheroes.

Speaking at PaleyFest last week, where exciting new trailers for The Flash and Arrow were shown, Berlanti compared the spirit of the spinoff to movies like The Magnificent Seven and Ocean’s Eleven, where the strength and appeal is derived from the ensemble cast. “We have a lot of lone gunmen and sheriffs in town,” the showrunner teased.

We’ll keep you updated on the Flash/Arrow spinoff as development continues.

[h=1]‘Flash/Arrow’ Spinoff Casts Ciara Renée as ‘Hawkgirl’[/h]

The exact plot or reality-defying facts surrounding The CW’s next spinoff in their shared Arrow/The Flash universe may still be kept largely under wraps, but one more actress – and DC Comics superhero – can be added to the confirmed cast. Whether she should be considered one of the heroes ‘never before seen’ on TV isn’t clear, however (appearing in a minor role in Smallville).

The role in question is that of Kendra Saunders a.k.a. Hawkgirl, gifted with a set of wings and centuries-old battle instincts. The actress set to bring her to life, however, is far less well-known: Ciara Renée, who has quickly made a name for herself on the stage, not the screen.

The casting news comes courtesy of Deadline, following not long after the first descriptions of the remaining cast members were revealed (but without any real clues or hints as to which DC Comics heroes they referenced). We speculated at the time – colored, perhaps, by some wishful thinking – that one of the women mentioned could be Kendra Saunders. Now, that suspicion has been confirmed.

“FEMALE WARRIOR” | This twentysomething Latina is pretty but unassuming, book smart and socially awkward by day. But by night, when she hears the cry of battle, her fury is ignited and she becomes a fierce warrior — so much so, that sometimes she can become a threat to others.

Exactly how faithful to the heroine’s origin and superpowers the showrunners will keep is up for debate. As much as The Flash and Arrow have both waded into the realm of metahumans, a young girl who is either the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, or bonded with the spirit of her ancestor (depending on classic/alternate versions of Kendra Munoz-Saunders) – complete with a set of wings powerful enough to put Pegasus to shame – is something else entirely.

The casting announcement describes the heroine as “beginning to learn that she has been repeatedly reincarnated over the centuries,” with her warrior side emerging when in danger. That is in keeping with the comic book version of the origin story, but how such a mystical ability will be fitting alongside heroes firmly rooted in technology – A.T.O.M., Captain Cold, Canary(?) – remains to be seen.

Welcome @CiaraRenee8 to the madness!! #Hawkgirl #Arrow #TheFlash
— Andrew Kreisberg (@AJKreisberg) March 30, 2015
It should encourage fans to know that when describing the addition of new DC Comics characters to the spinoff, executive producer Greg Berlanti seemed particularly enthusiastic about adding another woman to the team – provided they found the right actress:

“In picking them, it was very much about picking, ‘who are some of the most popular characters we’ve created?’ and also, tonally, who went with who? How disparate could we make it? And we’re also introducing these three new characters that we’re casting right now… I think it’s really important that we have another female hero on the show, and this one is really exciting. I can’t wait for people to find out — we just have to cast it right, as always. And then you want that Rat Pack-y kind of vibe of all this crew hanging out, as disparate and as different as they are.”

We’ll keep you up to date on more news about this spinoff series or Hawkgirl arrives, but for now, what do you think of the casting and character’s addition? Does this news confirm that the showrunners are truly looking to create a Justice League on the small screen, or do you have still have questions about the show’s direction?

[h=1]‘Flash/Arrow’ Spinoff Adds Arthur Darvill as Time Traveler ‘Rip Hunter’[/h]

If The CW has some official announcements to make regarding the next Arrow/Flash spinoff, then they had better make them quick. After word arrived that the team-up series would be adding DC Comics superheroine Hawkgirl to the cast (played by Ciara Renée), now comes confirmation of the actor who will be anchoring the series – as DC’s resident Time Master, Rip Hunter.

After previously released casting descriptions teased ‘The Traveler’ among the cast, it seemed Rip Hunter would be the version of the ‘man out of time’ appearing in the spinoff series. Now we know that Arthur Darvill – best known for his role as Rory Williams on Doctor Who – will be bringing the character to life (alongside still-unannounced cast members).

The news comes way of Deadline, offering a description of the role in keeping with that previously released. In short: a tortured soul in a “Han Solo-esque” wrapper:

“THE TRAVELER” | Described as a “Han Solo-esque rogue who gets by with his charm, this hero hails from the future, and has journeyed back in time on a secret mission. His razor-sharp wit hides the pain of a man who has lived through serious conflict. He also harbors many secrets, always leaving both his teammates and the audience unsure of his true allegiances.”

Though some comic fans may still be disappointed to see that the time traveler in question is not Booster Gold, the new description of the typically no-nonsense Rip implies that some of Booster’s wit and charm could be adopted this time around. Unfortunately, the presence of a comic book character so clearly tied to time travel makes the structure and purpose of this new spinoff both more and less mysterious.

On the surface, the presence of a time traveler helps make sense of the fact that Caity Lotz (who played Sara Lance, the first Canary on Arrow) is set to appear on the series, despite her character’s fate. However, it remains unclear if Lotz will be reprising her role or will return in the guise of yet another DC Comics character (viewer confusion be damned).

Since Rip Hunter is usually depicted as a man intent on keeping space and time stable, using time travel to weed out anomalies or others meddling with the past, his future in the same universe as The Flash could already be clear. With Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) only recently stepping into the realm of time travel (and acting quite irresponsibly), continued re-writes of history in The Flash‘s future could help usher in Rip Hunter. But where the show goes from there is still a total mystery.

Fans will need only wait until the 2015-2016 midseason when the series launches, although official details on the show (anthology, time-hopping sci-fi, alternatue universe?) should come before then. For now, what do you make of the new casting? Are you happy to see them added to The CW’s hared universe, or are you holding off excitement for another hero or heroine?

The untitled Flash/Arrow spinoff is expected to premiere next during the 2015-2016 midseason.

[h=1]‘Flash/Arrow’ Spinoff Titled ‘The Atom’ For Now; New All-Star Team Up Featurette[/h]

It seems like just yesterday that fans of The CW’s DC Comics universe were in agreement: Arrow was where joy and laughter went to die, while the cast of The Flash embraced the lighter side whenever possible. All that has changed (or plenty of it) now that the Reverse-Flash storyline has reached a boiling point, with Nora Allen’s killer finally revealed - hidden in plain sight all along. What better time for a visit from some friends?

As the “All-Star Team Up” episode title suggests, The Flash will have company when it returns on April 14. A new featurette explains exactly why Arrow regulars Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) will seek the aid of S.T.A.R. Labs’ finest, and how their presence may help, or hinder Barry (Grant Gustin) as his investigation into Harrison Wells begins.

Previous trailers have shown that Felicity – Barry’s earliest friend in the Arrow/Flash universe – would be filled in on just what’s changed between he and Dr. Wells, but the new video keeps her involvement to a minimum; not a bad thing, since she has enough to worry about with her own boyfriend donning a suit of armor and fighting crime at home.

But it won’t just be Ray Palmer whose crime-fighting game is taken to the next step before the current seasons of both CW shows are brought to a close. Exactly what “problem” of Ray’s will be solved, or what A.T.O.M. upgrades may lie in store (we still wouldn’t hold our breath for shrinking) isn’t clear, but we do know that Arrow‘s Black Canary will receive a new spin on the classic “Canary Cry.”

It remains to be seen if the team assembled in Central City will still be referred to as “the fun one,” given the murderer in their midst. Not to mention that villains returning with a vengeance, brand new enemies threatening Barry’s life, and shocking betrayals teased for the show’s final run of season 1 episodes. Maybe some time with friendly faces beforehand isn’t such a bad idea.

In other Flash/Arrow news, SpoilerTV reports that the still untitled spinoff series has been given the placeholder name ‘The Atom’ – not all that surprising, given that Ray Palmer was among the first characters confirmed for the TV show. Expected to debut during the midseason break of 2015-2016, the show will almost certainly bear a different title, given the presence of DC Comics characters like Hawkgirl, Rip Hunter, and one half of Firestorm.

We’ll keep you posted on more crossover details and spinoff rumors, but with so much tension building in The Flash‘s universe, is the mysterious spinoff series an afterthought at the moment? Sound off in the comments.

The Flash returns Tuesday, April 14 with “All-Star Team Up” @8pm on The CW.

[h=1]‘The Flash/Arrow’ Spinoff Going Straight to Series; Premieres January 2016[/h]

Given the unexpected twists being played out in season 3 of Arrow, and the building momentum towards The Flash‘s first season finale, The CW’s optimism in their DC Comics properties is understandable. They’re so optimistic, not only is the team behind both existing shows crafting a spinoff series, but are doing so in almost total secrecy – and now, we may have an idea why.

According to new details offered by Victor Garber (The Flash‘s ‘Professor Martin Stein’), the series will begin production this August for a 2016 premiere. We say series, not pilot because according to the actor, The CW has already seen enough to give a full series the green light.

That in itself isn’t shocking: not only did The Flash prove a strong enough project under Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg to merit its own series, despite early plans for a backdoor pilot, but the addition of established characters (The Atom, Black Canary, Firestorm) can’t hurt either.

Even so, the producers and network have been notably silent in the weeks leading up to The CW’s media upfronts on May 14, hinting that an official reveal and presentation could be in the works. In an interview with BroadwayWorld, Victor Garber was asked about his involvement in the series, confirming he’ll reprise his role, and offering previously unknown specifics:

“They are going to unveil more details about it soon – I believe they are going to do something for it in May at the upfronts… it’s a spin-off from THE FLASH, which I have been working on for a few [episodes]. To be honest, it is very wild for me that at this point of my life I am now in that world – I am now a half-superhero!
“The character I play is half of Firestorm, so conjoined – together – they are Firestorm. It’s been very wild and fun for me to do it… I think it’s going to be a very fun ride. I really honestly can’t tell you much about it except it is completely new and it will involve a lot of interesting people. We haven’t filmed any of it yet – but, it is going straight to series. We start filming in August and it will be on [The CW] in January.”

Exactly what the “something” is that the network has planned for the project’s grand unveiling will whet fan appetites, but aside from a possible teaser composed of existing footage, some cast photos, or synopsis, a simple title seems to be the most likely result. At present, the show is simply being referred to as ‘The Atom,’ but word has appeared in multiple places online that a subtitle of Legends of Tomorrow could be planned – drawing on the building universe and subplots of time travel already confirmed.

The timetable offered by Garber also fits with previous reports that The CW would be launching the show in the 2015-2016 midseason (possibly starting as a replacement for The Flash and Arrow‘s winter break, a la Marvel’s Agent Carter). Since Garber doesn’t estimate of the length of the production, it remains to be seen if this ensemble series will have a condensed run – but it’s most likely.

Unfortunately, the interviewer doesn’t press about the potential of reuniting with the other half of his Firestorm identity, Ronnie Raymond – played by Robbie Amell (The Duff) – meaning Amell’s absence from the spinoff remains as much a mystery as ever. The circumstances of his teased return to The Flash offer one possible explanation, but… it’s one that fans may not like.

The same air of mystery surrounds the return of Caity Lotz, playing the now-deceased Sara Lance a.k.a. Black Canary (although we’ve got our own theories on her return as well). It may be too much to hope that those questions will be put to rest during the network’s media upfronts, but at this point, fans will likely be happy for any official details.

Fans can now mark their calendars: the untitled Arrow/Flash spinoff begins production in August 2015, with the series set to debut on The CW in January 2016.

[h=1]‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Stars Talk Hawkgirl and White Canary[/h]

As the the people behind CW superhero shows The Flash and Arrow work to create brand new seasons, many fans are anxiously awaiting the debut of the upcoming spinoff DC show, Legends of Tomorrow. The first trailer revealed the Emerald Archer and the Scarlet Speeder will have cameos, but this new series is going to give several lesser-known DC characters in the spotlight. That includes the immortal (and brilliant) Vandal Savage as the big bad, versus a team that includes Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), White Canary (Caity Lotz), and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée), among others.
Legends of Tomorrow won’t begin to air until 2016, but its preview has fans speculating. Whether it’s wondering about the show’s tone or how the series will juggle so many characters, viewers of the CW’s DC shows certainly have a lot to think about. Luckily for them, the cast and crew have been doing plenty to promote the series, including providing information about White Canary and Hawkgirl in particular.

From The Web

Speaking with CTV, Lotz and Renée shared a few more facts about their roles. Renée’s character, Hawkgirl, made a brief cameo in the Season 1 finale of The Flash, and she explained Legends of Tomorrow will basically serve as an origin story for her character, Kendra Saunders:
“She’s just kind of figuring out that she has this power – this kind of overwhelming anger that turns her into a warrior. She doesn’t quite understand it. She’s kind of realizing that she’s has past lives, which is also a weird kind of thing to realize as well. So, I don’t think necessarily she’s a superhero yet, but she definitely has something interesting going on.”

As for Black Canary returning as White Canary, the trailer reveals that she will indeed be resurrected by the Lazarus Pit. Lotz promises they’re taking her character, Sara Lance, in a new direction and it won’t just be more of the same with her skilled heroine:
“I’m excited to see what happens ’cause we want to make it different. There’s going to be changes. This is still Sara Lance, but there has to be repercussions of everything she’s been through, so I’m hoping that we get to really play with that stuff.”
When Thea Queen was dipped into the Lazarus Pit in the latest season of Arrow, she briefly lashed out and had a temporary loss of her memories. However, her resurrection came just a short amount of time after being stabbed by Ra’s al Ghul. Sara Lance has been dead since the first episode of Arrow’s third season and, without giving any blatant spoilers, Lotz explained that’ll impact Sara’s actions in a noticeable way:
“It’s going to have a toll. Just like Thea went into the Lazarus Pit and you saw how that affected her, and Sara’s dead for a long time. So I feel like there’s going to be a big shift.”

In the comics, White Canary was actually one of Black Canary’s villains and she didn’t have a lot of appearances. An extraordinarily gifted and deadly hand-to-hand combatant, White Canary set her sights on Black Canary after the hero defeated her brothers – individuals who are also exceptionally skilled in martial arts. In Arrow, Sara Lance becoming White Canary could symbolize her resurrection – a brand new start – but given the negative and drastic side effects the Lazarus Pit can have on a person’s mind, this may also hint at her occasionally lashing out in more villainous ways.
Considering Ra’s al Ghul is now out of the way, it’s possible Nyssa al Ghul – Sara’s former lover – could be the one to bring Black Canary’s body to the Lazarus Pit. That, or Rip Hunter – a man from the future – will be the one to bring up the idea of resurrecting her.

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Delayed Until Spring 2016?

Joining Arrow and The Flash next season will be DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, only the latest television series featuring DC Comics’ characters to air on The CW. Legends will be unique among the DC/CW offerings for a number of reasons, but especially for its focus on an ensemble of heroes and villains rather than a sole starring character.
The first trailer for Legends of Tomorrow introduced audiences to the series’ time-traveling team, comprised of characters who first appeared on either Arrow or Flash (he Atom, Canary, Firestorm, Captain Cold, Heat Wave) but also newcomers to the ever-expanding DC/CW universe (Hawkgirl and Rip Hunter). It isn’t entirely clear how this mix of heroes and villains comes together, but Hunter’s insistence that the fate of the future is at stake implies it’s a threat unlike anything the DC/CW universe has faced so far.

Much like how Agent Carter filled the midseason hiatus of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, many expected Legends of Tomorrow would serve a similar purpose on The CW. Both Arrow and The Flash typically break for several weeks during December and January, which leaves an opening for another superhero show to fill that void during the winter months. But when The CW began announcing the premiere dates for their fall 2015 season, Legends of Tomorrow was nowhere to seen. And while technically a midseason premiere doesn’t qualify as part of a network’s fall lineup, it was a little surprising for there to be absolutely no mention of Legends.
The following day, a new Twitter account created for the Legends of Tomorrow writers room (there are similar accounts for both Arrow and The Flash‘s writers rooms) sent this tweet, seemingly confirming that Legends has been delayed until spring 2016:
Hello World! Who else is super excited about Legends of Tomorrow, premiering Spring 2016 on the CW? DC's Legends of Tomorrow Video - First Look: DC's Legends of Tomorrow | Watch Online Free
— LoT Writers Room (@LoTWritersRoom) June 25, 2015
However, judging by the inclusion of a “?” it seems that even Legends of Tomorrow‘s writers are unsure just when their show is premiering. Most shows return from their midseason hiatus in March or April, and were Legends to begin airing at the same time, that gives The CW a very busy schedule just brimming with superheroes.

There hasn’t been an official announcement for Legends of Tomorrow‘s premiere date, but if the intention was for the show to fill that midseason slot, that may no longer be the plan. If the series premiere was indeed pushed back from winter to spring, it suggests the show may have come upon some unforeseen issues during production. These could be effects related given that Legends will feature a wide array of powers for its characters to wield, including The Atom’s shrinking ability which was only glimpsed briefly during the trailer.
Do you think The CW chose to delay Legends of Tomorrow‘s premiere or was it always their intention to go into spring with a full slate of superhero shows? What could have been the reason for the push back? Sound off in the comments below!

[h=1]‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ Casts Falk Hentschel as Hawkman[/h]

As the cogs slowly turn bringing the DC Extended Universe together in big budget blockbuster movie form, The CW has already carved itself out a neat little DC TV universe that’s been steadily growing since the initial success of Arrow. That show now exists in the same continuity as its spinoff, The Flash, and both shows will soon share that continuity with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, another spinoff that will feature a team made up of superheroes (and supervillains) from both The Flash and Arrow, as well as new characters from DC Comics.
Among the new characters is Kendra Saunders a.k.a. Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée), the latest reincarnation of an ancient warrior who has the ability to grow wings out of her back. In the comic books, Hawkgirl’s fate is tightly interwoven with that of Hawkman, her male counterpart and soulmate, who has similar abilities. Hawkman is set to appear on all three of The CW’s DC shows, and now we know who will play him.

TheWrap reports that Falk Hentschel (Transcendence) is taking on the role of Carter Hall a.k.a. Hawkman, who will appear first on Arrow and The Flash before making his debut in Legends of Tomorrow. According to the character description, both Carter and Kendra “can access the powers of the Hawk God, Horus,” which is how they are able to transform into their winged alter egos. A previous report said that Carter is able to access memories of all 5000 years of his various lives, whereas Kendra is “born anew” each time and therefore has no idea who Carter is at first.
Hentschel recently starred in CBS’s short-lived legal drama Reckless and guest-starred in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two as mercenary Marcus Scarlotti. He’s also played supporting roles in feature films like Transcendence and White House Down. According to TheWrap, Hawkman will “play a major role” on Legends of Tomorrow, which could mean that he’s in line to become a series regular.
Falk Hentschel in ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

The full superhero team in Legends of Tomorrow includes Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jay Jackson (Franz Drameh), the latter of whom is rumored to be the second half of Firestorm. There’s also the recently resurrected White Canary (Caity Lotz), criminal duo Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heatwave (Dominic Purcell), perky billionaire Ray Palmer a.k.a. the Atom (Brandon Routh), and time traveller Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill). They are brought together for the first time in a mission to kill immortal supervillain Vandal Savage.
By crossing over three different shows, The CW is experimenting with an interesting support structure. Even if fans lose interest in the plot of one show, they will likely keep watching it anyway in order to keep up with what’s going on in the DC TV universe at large. According to this latest report, Hawkman will make his first appearance on crossover episodes of The Flash and Arrow, thereby helping to promote Legends of Tomorrow in the same way that Barry Allen’s introduction on Arrow encouraged people to follow his character into The Flash.
Are you a fan of this casting choice? Sound off on what you think the Hawkman/Hawkgirl storyline could be in the comments below.
Arrow returns for season 4 Wednesday, October 7th, at 8PM on The CW; The Flash returns for season 2 Tuesday, October 6th, at 8PM on The CW; Legends of Tomorrow is expected to air on The CW in early 2016.

[h=1]‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ Casts Casper Crump as Vandal Savage[/h]

Back when the DC’s Legends of Tomorrow trailer first dropped, it was revealed that the newfound team of heroes and villains – which includes Atom, Captain Cold, White Canary, Firestorm, Heat Wave, Hawkgirl, and time-traveler Rip Hunter – would join forces to prevent the immortal fiend Vandal Savage from taking over the world. It wasn’t announced which actor would step into Savage’s boosts, but plenty of other information has been released to help keep fans excited about the CW’s upcoming comic book show.
It’s since been confirmed that Hawkman is also heading to the show and that The CW’s third series in its DC TV universe will be built-up in the upcoming seasons of Arrow and The Flash. As those two shows have the task of exploring these main characters even further and planting seeds for what’s to come, it looks like Legends of Tomorrow’s big bad, Vandal Savage, will also appear in The Flash and Arrow before causing all kinds of trouble in Legends of Tomorrow.

Variety reports that Danish actor Casper Crump, pictured below, has landed the role of the 6,000 year-old villain. Vandal Savage has one simple goal: world domination. The bad guy has appeared in several animated projects (Justice League, Justice League: Doom, Young Justice), but this marks the first time Vandal Savage has received the spotlight in a live-action series. There was an individual inspired by Savage in Smallville (played by former Superman Dean Cain), but the enemy went by a different name. Fans will finally get to see Crump’s version of Savage in an upcoming crossover episode for The Flash and Arrow.
News of Crump’s comes shortly after reports that Falk Hentschel will become Hawkman on Legends of Tomorrow (after he too debuts in the aforementioned Arrow/Flash crossover episodes). It’s looking like the upcoming crossovers will be must-watch episodes for anyone even remotely interested in Legends of Tomorrow; not only is that an effective way to get fans pumped for the new series, but it can also get more casual fans interested in the forthcoming DC series.

Only time will tell how Crump’s performance will be as the iconic DC fiend, but the above photo certainly proves Crump looks the part. One thing is for sure: he needs to come off as both menacing, incredibly wise, and extremely cunning. Now it’s just a matter of seeing the villain’s costume design and hearing what kind of accent the villain will have. Either way, he absolutely looks like Vandal Savage already, so the announcement is off to a promising start.
Crump will also appear in 2016’s Tarzan live-action movie with Margot Robbie, Alexander Skarsgard, and Christoph Waltz.

The Flash
season two begins Tuesday, October 6, at 8PM on The CW; Arrow season four begins Wednesday, October 7, at 8PM on The CW; and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is expected to debut in early 2016 on The CW.

[h=1]‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ Producers Talk Comic Book Inspirations[/h]

With Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad furthering the launch of the DC Extended Universe next year – paving the way for the eventual Justice League film – audiences will soon witness other DC characters besides the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel grace the big screen for the very first time. Of course, on the small screen side of things, The CW has already introduced an extended universe and plans to form a ‘justice league’ of its own with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
While Arrow established a gritty world tinged with the possibilities of the fantastical and impossible, The Flash blew those doors open, expanding the world to include ideas like superpowers, time travel, and alternate realities. And now that the sandbox has been filled, Legends of Tomorrow will have plenty of room with which to introduce lesser known characters (e.g., Rip Hunter, Hawkman, etc.) while embracing a new formula for storytelling.
What we know of the series so far comes from clues provided in the first trailer, pegging the newly cast Vandal Savage as the “big bad” with machinations for world – and time – domination. Featuring several stars from Arrow and The Flash, the show centers on Rip Hunter’s attempt to assemble a team to stop Savage. That said, there’s still plenty we don’t know. Fortunately, The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Phil Klemmer to learn more.
In terms of inspiration, Guggenheim referred to both Dan Jurgens’2011 limited run Time Masters: Vanishing Point and Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis’ Justice League International as starting points for the writing staff. While the former effectivelydepicts “Rip Hunter and a crazy combination of characters” in action, the latter serves as a basis for the show’s lighter, more comedic tone a la The Flash (rather than Arrow). Still, the show will not shy away from darker themes altogether, with Klemmer hinting at betrayals, characters turning evil (or, in Captain Cold and Heat Wave’s case, returning to evil), and even the possibility of death.
“Some of these characters might not make it for the full trip; some might be lost in time.”
As for whom these doomed characters may be, the producers remained mum; though they did reveal one character who will not be making an appearance anytime soon: Booster Gold. Despite being Rip Hunter’s father in the comics and a DC fan-favorite, the 25th century hero may be “being groomed for bigger things,” Klemmer said (a future DC film, perhaps?).
http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/Booster-Gold-DC-Comics.jpg
This does come as a bit of a disappointment, considering he and his robotic sidekick, Skeets, would fit right in with the show’s lighter tone, while also supplementing interesting commentary on the idea of heroism as tied to celebritism. Heck, we’d love to see Oliver give Booster his signature eye roll.
Regarding other characters who will appear on the show, the producers talked briefly on Falk Hentschel’s Hawkman a.k.a. Carter Hall. In addition to being 5,000 years old, the character will retain his memories of his past lives unlike his female counterpart, Hawkgirl. Fans of the comics know Hawkgirl as an alien from the planet Thanagar, and while Guggenheim did not confirm if the show would retain this same heritage, he did imply a faithful adaptation.
“You’ll get a clear picture of what her origin story is and you’ll actually get a chance to see it. Fans of the comics will recognize an awful lot. It’s probably one of the more faithful origins that we’ve told.”
http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/Hawkman-Hawkgirl-CW-Universe.jpg
Staying true to Hawkgirl’s comic book origin would certainly make possible a plethora of future plot threads – one specifically aligned with Keller’s ominous implications of betrayal above. In the series finale of the animated series Justice League, Hawkgirl initially betrays humanity – and her fellow league members – when her people, the Thanagarians, invade and attack Earth. While such a massive storyline is more suited to cinema, the complex dynamics involving trust, family, and allegiance would certainly prove ripe for exploration on television.
The last bit of information involved the mystery character known as Jay Jackson. While Klemmer confirmed, “Jay Jackson is not code for any other DC superhero,” that does not necessarily mean he won’t be a hero – just not one already established. But with so many other heroes joining the show, Legends may need to scale back, especially if it plans on boasting an opening monologue like Arrow and The Flash. “My name is Rip Hunter, Ray Palmer, Sarah Lance, Leonard Snark, and Shiera Hall” just doesn’t have the same ring to it as “My name is Oliver Queen.”

[h=1]CW President: ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Is The Last DC Spinoff For Now[/h]

With seven superhero films hitting the big screen in 2016 – followed by eight in 2017, if Fox keeps its Fantastic Four 2 slot – there’s no doubt cinema has fully succumb to the capes and cowls movement. Even the small screen, despite its wider scope and variety of content, has adopted the trend, boasting 14 comic book-inspired series for the 2015-2016 season. And leading the charge on the television front is The CW (which, for all intents and purposes, might as well stand for ‘Comic World’).
Counting the Vertigo adaptation iZombie, nearly half of The CW’s original programming is comprised of DC Comics properties. After the success of Arrow, the network quickly added The Flash; and after its own tremendous success, audiences could hardly blink before DC’s Legends of Tomorrow appeared on the horizon. Existing in the Arrow/Flash universe, the spin-off will feature pre-established characters (i.e. Atom, Captain Cold, etc.) while introducing many new ones to the network as well.

That said, The CW has no intention of becoming ‘The DC.’ In an effort to prevent superheroes from completely overshadowing the network, President Mark Pedowitz (hat tip CBM) stated – during the 2015 Television Critics Association press tour – that after Legends of Tomorrow, the DC universe’s small screen expansion is on hold: “There is no intention, at this point, to spin anything else off.”
The confirmation should not come as a surprise, nor a disappointment, to viewers. While both Arrow and The Flash have seen indisputable success, they arguably follow a more traditional storytelling format and feature less obscure comic book protagonists compared to Legends of Tomorrow – which will adopt a formula similar to that of Power Rangers. At the risk of overstuffing (or overpowering) the TV lineup even further, The CW will help itself – and small screen superheroes in general – by taking a few much needed breaths, waiting to see how Legends and even CBS’s Supergirl ultimately perform.

There is of course the possibility that Legends will not score well; thus, acting prematurely by planning, say, a Hawkgirl spin-off before the character receives the definitive fan seal of approval would only cripple the network. As such, caution is the name of the game, especially with superhero fatigue lingering near. And it is this same caution that originally prevented The CW from initially taking on Supergirl, before the show flew on over to CBS. At the TCA presentation, Pedowitz (via Deadline)addressed his regret regarding the decision.
We hadn’t launched ‘The Flash’ yet, we weren’t ready to take on another DC property. In hindsight we probably should’ve gone that direction… Sometime you lose great shows.
Spreading out the crop of superhero programs to other networks may prove beneficial to Pedowitz, though, in terms of exposure and limited risk. Whereas the failure of one DC series on the CW could negatively impact or even sink its entire shared universe ship (think ‘Battleship’ strategy), the success of Supergirl on CBS – a more “mainstream” network, if you will – could bring an increase in viewership to Arrow, Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow, while making cross-network crossovers that much more likely.
Overall, the lack of any further DC-CW shows in the foreseeable future is not a sign of foreboding, but one of potential; it is the calm before (hopefully) another potential superhero storm.

[h=1]Legends of Tomorrow: Stephanie Corneliussen To Play Valentina Vostok[/h]

After the successful launch of Arrow and the even more successful spinoff series The Flash, The CW has proven that they’re capable of supporting an ever-expanding DC Television Universe. Fans can look forward to a lighter season of Arrow and the exploration of the multiverse in the second season of The Flash, both of which promise to add new characters to their shared universe.
With the animated series Vixen currently airing on CW Seed and spinoff series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow slated for 2016, the character roster in the shared universe is growing at an impressive rate. Though the trinity (Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman) are absent from the shows, most of DC’s famous heroes and villains are being adapted on The CW.

The Wrap reports that Stephanie Corneliussen (Mr. Robot) has joined Legends of Tomorrow as Valentina Vostok. Vostok is a Russian scientist during the Cold War, suspected of aiding series villain Vandal Savage (Casper Crump). The character will be featured in a multi-episode arc, during which Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) will be trying to earn her affections and determine where her true loyalties lie.
Valetina Vostok was created by Paul Kupperberg and Jim Aparo and first appeared in Showcase #94 in 1977. In the book she is a high ranking pilot in the Soviet Air Force who steals a plane and attempts to defect to America. However, her escape fails and she ends up crashing the plane.

Vostok is a significant character in large part due to her connections to the Doom Patrol, a superhero team made up of heroes who are alienated by their powers. Her plane crashes on the same site where the original Doom Patrol perished and she is fused with a negative energy being that originally inhabited Doom Patrol member Negative Man. Granted the same radioactive powers as the deceased hero, she adopted the moniker Negative Woman and joined the newest incarnation of the Doom Patrol.
Legends of Tomorrow is adopting a new plot structure, one that will allow for the miniseries to tell a self-contained story. Once the heroes stop Vandal Savage, presumably they will go their separate ways until a new threat appears on the scene. CW President Mark Pedowitz has stated that there will be no new DC spinoffs at this time. However, The CW has an opportunity to use Legends as something of an anthology series, focusing on parts of the DC Universe that wouldn’t necessarily mesh with The Flash or Arrow.
In other words: introducing Vostok on Legends of Tomorrow (and, in turn, the CW/DC-verse) now could serve a springboard for a new story centered on the Doom Patrol, in a future installment.

[h=1]Legends of Tomorrow Cast Adds Peter Francis James[/h]

Both Arrow and The Flash return with new seasons in only two weeks, but we still have a few months before the debut of The CW’s newest addition to their DC Comics programming slate — Legends of Tomorrow. Expected to premiere in the spring, Legends will feature a team of DC television heroes and villains working together against an enemy more powerful than anyone they’ve encountered before — Vandal Savage (Casper Crump).
The Legends team includes The Atom/Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), White Canary/Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), Professor Martin Stein/Firestorm (Victor Garber), Heatwave (Dominic Purcell) and Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller). They’ll be assembled by newcomer and time traveler, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill), and joined by another pair of new-to-DC TV heroes, Hawkman and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee & Falk Hentschel).

Before appearing on Legends, however, Hawkman a.k.a Carter Hall will first crop up during this year’s Arrow/Flash crossover, likely in some way connected to Palmer, seeing as in the comics the two characters are old friends. But Hall won’t be the only Legends character who’ll appear: Dr. Aldus Boardman, a new character played by Peter Francis James, will first appear alongside Hall during the episode, before also continuing on to Legends of Tomorrow (via ComicBook.com).

Dr. Boardman doesn’t seem to originate from the comics and therefore was likely created just for the show. Described as a Classics professor from St. Roch University, Boardman is said to have spent his career researching the history of Hawkman and Hawkgirl and how it connects with the immortal, Vandal Savage. Because of this, he’s apparently our heroes (and villains) only hope of finding Savage.
With the concepts of resurrection and immortality having already been introduced in the DC/CW universe, it only makes sense for Legends of Tomorrow to build on those ideas. And no DC characters better represents those concepts than Hawkman and Hawkgirl, better known as doomed lovers Prince Khufu and Chayara — cursed to meet, fall in love and die, only to be reincarnated to act out the tragedy all over again, for eternity.
The catch is that Prince Khufu, or rather Carter Hall, retains all the memories of his past lives, while Chayara, or Kendra Saunders as she’s now known, begins anew with each reincarnation. It isn’t clear exactly how Boardman’s research into Hall and Saunders’ strange and tragic condition will connect with the search for Savage, but surely he’s learned something useful. After all, with Hall retaining some 5,000 years of memories, he must at least be somewhat knowledgeable of the fearsome immortal.
There’s no firm premiere date for Legends of Tomorrow, though the series is expected in early 2016. Season 2 of The Flash premieres Tuesday, October 6 and Season 4 of Arrow premieres Wednesday October 7.
