Holla PG, so my main mobile number is Telenor, its been in my use for over 10 years and as everyone knows its extremely difficult to replace your main number.

This is the number that my bank accounts are linked to, where my mobile authenticators are linked, my google account is linked and so on so its absolutely out of the question to simply dump this number. Some of my very old friends from college days and even school have this number and it might be losing contact to lots of people whom i no longer meet on a regular basis.

But i really want to change my network, i have a Galaxy S6 edge for over a year (an LTE enabled phone) and i recently got through the hassle of replacing my telenor SIM to 4G SIM but still no 4G signals to where i work and where i live. ZONG gives me 4G signals at my home and i was thinking of moving to ZONG network with the same number.

Question is what might be technical issues with moving to a different network without changing the number? For example, my google account says my registered number is Telenor 0345-xyz but will changing network mess things up? Anyone with personal experience can shed some light? I have been considering to change the network for over a year now but every time the issues which i may face stops me from going through this.

And oh i thought this thread belongs here because using 4G is my main goal but feel free to move it to appropriate place if you think so.

You posted in the right place, and there are plenty of Telenor haters (including me) in this section.

Their 4G coverage is weak, and is expanding very slowly (if at all).

I get how you don't want to get rid of the number, you can always port out to Zong using MNP (Mobile Number Portability).

This way, not only the number you have, but the code as well (0345) gets ported to Zong, all you'll have to do is request to port to Zong, and do Biometric verification, after which Telenor signals will be blocked on your SIM, and you'll have to visit Zong and get the new 4G enabled SIM from them, with the same number, but a whole new network.

As for Google/Facebook/Online verification, there shouldn't be any issues, but what I'd recommend is that you unlink the number from Google and/or Facebook and then add it again, even though it'll be the same number, it's always a good practice.

Feel free to ask any more questions.

Yeah that's my main concern. Almost every online site/store uses authenticator these days like stripe sms confirmation and removing all of them and registerting new number again seems like trouble.
My ubl account, mcb account, Skrill account, steam, origin, uplay, battle.net, gmail, humblebundle, cyberghost are a few which quickly comes to my mind which uses authenticator or sms confirmation of some kind tied to my mobile number. There are more, MUCH more which i can't remember right now (lmao)

Considering the number itself will NOT change, you shouldn't have any issues, I'd do it as a 'just in case' type of thing.

One way you can test, is after you port, try hitting forgot my password on facebook, and then see if the text arrives normally on your phone or not.

That's IF however you're willing to port out.

Wait for shaheerk to reply, he's ported from Zong, to Mobilink, and now to Telenor, so he should be able to give you an idea of how these SMS authentication based sites are working for him.

Yes technically it shouldn't cause any problem as the number is same but if they check for operators too then it can be a problem. As google explicitly mentions that my number is xyz and its on Telenor.
Someone with personal experience as you said can confirm this better.

Dear
Welcome to Telenor haters club 1st of all.

You can port to Zong without any fear. You registrations like Facebook, Google, Bank Accounts etc will remain as it is.
My primary number was of Ufone but I ported it to Telenor first and than to Zong due to bad network and I never faced any issue. My google, facebook and even mobile banks and registrations didn't effect.
So if Zong is good at your area Go For It.

Thanks, that's the kind of confirmation i needed. I think its finally time to pull the plug and jump from telenor. Although their voice quality has always been great for me but they are lacking in data side for far too long and i just wanna support Zong. They have 4G in my area for around a year now.

I can confirm that FPSC, PPSC and NTS can't send sms notifications to ported numbers. However that shouldn't be your concern if you are not related. I am not sure about Google etc.
I do trust above mentioned guys on suggestion that it wont affect anything else.

NTS, PPSC, FPSC do ask you to provide non ported number to avoid any problem but rest assure there will be no issue. I have receive sms alerts from both NTS and FPSC in previous month on my ported number. So rest assure there will be no issue regarding these sms alerts.

Another vote for ditching Telenor. It sucks. I ported my number to Zong about 14 months ago, and haven't faced a single issue. I've received verification texts from Google, my bank (SCB) and other online services without any problems. So go for it!

I don't know why telenor is still competing with giants like zong and mobilink, they should wrap up now as their services are these days.

I have telenor sim converted to Ufone
It's much better since telenor is quite expensive
A super card lasts me a month easily
Regarding authenticators with Google and apps you won't find any problem
Only issue I have is with my university
Since my sim is converted their system doesn't allow me to receive sms alerts of extra classes or cancellations
Other then that no issues

Yeah when they didn't bid for 4G originally it was a big indication that telenor was not interested any more in serious investment in Pakistan. I am gonna visit zong franchise tomorrow and inquire about the steps needed for porting.
