Christian cross is used in wars to denote those crusaders which did actually wear it. So if you are portraying those people nothing wrong with it. We've seen it used in horror movies for exorcism and I think the Christians actually believe in exorcism. Have you ever seen the statue of Jesus Christ in a sewer or on the gateway to hell? No that'd count as a disrespect. Surely any sane person won't do that. So why are you disrespecting Islam by showing Quranic verses in toilets and using our God's name and the cloth of Kaaba on the gateway to Hell or demon world whatever that is?
You are free to use symbology to create a sense of association but keep in mind "with what" are you associating the symbol? Nobody would like to see their religion's statues and symbols in a sewer or on the gateway to demon world. But I've only found cases like these with Islam. Maybe it's an alluring religion but the only thing I ask is have a thorough understanding before using these symbols.
True but there is a difference between a skewed understanding of the people in general and a skewed understanding of their religion. If you have a skewed understanding of others' religion I'd say better shut up and don't do anything related to it unless you really know what you are doing. That's it. There have been numerous cases like these such as COD's favela map where the Quranic verse was written in the toilet.
And I don't know if it's really true but I've read it was a pure Quranic verse written on that frame of the picture in the toilet. How can you have so much Abuses will lead to ban time as a Non-Muslim, to find a quranic verse and use it as a texture of a picture frame inside a "toilet" ? Surely you can portray a mosque or museum in a game and put it there but in a toilet I'd say that's wrong. I might be wrong here and maybe it really wasn't intentional as @
iampasha stated, maybe they put a dozen of those frames everywhere around the map and due to
lack of knowledge they
didn't give it much thought when putting it in the toilet as well but that's clearly my Point.
"When you are dealing with someone else's religion, take extra care don't just skim through like it doesn't matter. Be a proper human being and respect and get knowledge about other's religion before doing such things."
Anyways I don't get butthurt over things like these but what's wrong is wrong. You can't deny that. I'm not against using Islamic things and history in video games, instead I'd encourage other developers to do it but do so after getting proper knowledge. I don't care whether it's intentional or not but the least you can do is if you are a game developer or working for some company, raise a voice if you are working with these people and make them understand it's quite wrong to do this. That's what I'm asking, nothing more.
Edit:- Found a nice article where Muslims in the Video Game industry did a panel discussing this topic
https://venturebeat.com/2016/03/28/how-the-west-fails-to-represent-muslims-correctly-in-video-games/
I particularly like the points such as "Why do the Muslims have to be represented by faith and not by nationality. Just because someone has a beard and is Arab-looking doesn't necessarily mean he is a Muslim." Most COD games portray villains as Muslim terrorists but wouldn't it be better if you researched on this topic and find that people like these aren't Muslims even if they claim to do so. Adding some lines spoken by an American MC where he discusses on this morality topic against the Muslim terrorists while fighting and rejects him being a Muslim would surely give a more philosophical flavor to the game while providing a flexible and non-rigid view of the Muslims as well.
