NASA is teasing space enthusiasts, hinting that it may have some big news to announce about other Earth-like planets in the Milky Way.
The space agency said it plans to share a new discovery from its Kepler Space Telescope at a news conference scheduled for 9 a.m. PDT on Thursday.

The Kepler mission, launched in 2009, is dedicated to finding Earth-like planets in what scientists call the "habitable zone," or the region
near stars where orbiting planets might have the conditions to support the existence of liquid water.

Water is a key ingredient for potentially sustaining life, but if a planet is too close to a star, high temperatures cause evaporation. If a planet is too far, freezing occurs.
Since its launch, the Kepler telescope has discovered more than 1,000 planets and more than 3,000 planet candidates, including those in the habitable zone.

But on Wednesday, NASA hinted that the latest discovery may be one of the most earth-like planets ever found.
"Exoplanets, especially small Earth-size worlds, belonged within the realm of science fiction just 21 years ago," a press release by the agency said. "Today, and thousands of discoveries later, astronomers are on the cusp of finding something people have dreamed about for thousands of years -- another Earth."
The suggestive statement already has the Internet abuzz with theories that the agency might have found a planet capable of sustaining life.
To find out if NASA really has discovered "another Earth," the agency is encouraging space exploration fans to tune into a livestream of Thursday's teleconference, and to check out theirKepler mission website.

Wish we could have world like EVE online. No one ever dies and they roam the galaxy as if they are next city on the planet.

The fact that we cannot visit these planets, at least in our lifetime pisses me off so much. God y u no make me few centuries later.

We'll still be here even after few centuries.

We ain't going nowhere. Not in the next 1000 years at least.

We will be gone before that if our population growth doesnt stop..the biggest realistic enemy of humans are humans.
Maybe over population deserves a thread of its own
Most contemporary estimates for the carrying capacity of the Earth under existing conditions are between 4 billion and 16 billion. Depending on which estimate is used, human overpopulation may or may not have already occurred. Nevertheless, the rapid recent increase in human population is causing some concern. The population is expected to reach between 8 and 10.5 billion between the year 2040[SUP][10][/SUP][SUP][11][/SUP] and 2050.[SUP][12][/SUP] In May 2011, the United Nations increased the medium variant projections to 9.3 billion for 2050 and 10.1 billion for 2100.[SUP][13]
[/SUP]The recent rapid increase in human population over the past three centuries has raised concerns that the planet may not be able to sustain present or future numbers of inhabitants. The InterAcademy Panel Statement on Population Growth, circa 1994, stated that many environmental problems, such as rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, global warming, and pollution, are aggravated by the population expansion.[SUP][14][/SUP]

Earth has lost half of its wildlife in the past 40 years, says WWF
Species across land, rivers and seas decimated as humans kill for food in unsustainable numbers and destroy habitats
And I am sure we are aware of the decline of bees thats happening around the world

We will be here long after the bees are gone. Humans have survived through the Abuses will lead to ban worst.

And yes the population crisis becomes a harsh reality as soon as we hit 15 billion. After that agriculture will be the number one industry on the planet followed by electric power generation.

But we'll even survive that. We'll live longer. Coz as humans we're the toughest motherfuckers in this galaxy.

The sad truth is, even after all that, even after the next long winter which is coming, we'll still be here :(

At most, we'll populate Moon or Europa but we're hopelessly stuck in our local cluster. Won't make it past pluto like ever.

Yeah, this thought really saddens me sometimes. Wish I was either born late when space exploration will be a full fledged thing or it gets developed really early so that I live to see it.

What we know about Kepler 452-b:

  • It's the smallest exoplanet discovered to date discovered orbiting in the habitable zone of a G2-class star, just like the Earth and the Sun.
  • Kepler-452b is 60 percent larger in diameter than Earth and is considered a super-Earth-size planet.
  • It's likely rocky.
  • While Kepler-452b is larger than Earth, its 385-day orbit is only 5 percent longer.
  • The planet is 5 percent farther from its parent star Kepler-452 than Earth is from the Sun.
  • Kepler-452 is 6 billion years old, 1.5 billion years older than our sun, has the same temperature, and is 20 percent brighter and has a diameter 10 percent larger.
  • The Kepler-452 system is located 1,400 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus.

  • They also said that the planet is likely to have lots of clouds and possibly active volcanoes
  • They also said that it receives about 10% more energy than the earth does because of the proximity and age of the nearby star, I think this would mean it would have a little bit of a higher temperature
  • Also since it is 6 billion years old there is way more time than we have had on Earth for life to have developed given the chance
  • For clarity, Kepler-452 is the star, and Kepler-452b is the planet
  • They are confident that the planet has an atmosphere but they have no idea of its composition

I feel really sad to be born at a relatively early time when we are still clueless about so many things. Just imagine the body of knowledge that will be available to people living in the 30th century. I feel the later you are born, the luckier you are.

Our generation is going to miss out on SOOOOOOOOO much. :(

A newly discovered exoplanet, Kepler-452b, comes the closest of any found so far to matching our Earth-sun system. This artist’s conception of a planetary lineup shows habitable-zone planets with similarities to Earth: from left, Kepler-22b, Kepler-69c, the just announced Kepler-452b, Kepler-62f and Kepler-186f. Last in line is Earth itself.

The discovery of a super-Earth-sized planet orbiting a sun-like star brings us closer than ever to finding a twin of our own watery world. But NASA’s Kepler space telescope has captured evidence of other potentially habitable planets amid the sea of stars in the Milky Way galaxy

Unless you're born near to when the world ends, then you're an unlucky son of a Abuses will lead to ban. :p

We outlived Thomas Malthus and his population growth crisis, we'll outlive all of this too, and if shit does hit the fan, we'll deal with it. We have an inability to deal with far in the future problems anyway.

it does not matter when you are born, where you are born is what matters, just imagine if you were born in Ethiopia :p and even in 30th century, there will be much things to be discovered, maybe medical science gets improved and cheap too as now hep c tablet sovaldi is in market but it is EXPENSIVE.

What is peoples obsession with Battle Royale genre. 6 minutes to find a match, 3 minutes to setup a match, 2 minutes to land, 10 minutes for scavanging maybe 2 3 gunfigts and its over. Multiplayer landscape is looking absolute dogshit.
I tried playing Apex Legends once. Couldn't find a gun for 5 minutes straight. If I found a gun, I couldn't find the right ammo for it. Got killed fighting with my fists. Uninstalled it the next day.

After I watched it, I never felt like i watched a show. It was a friggin journey. I got way too attached to Thorfinn and seeing him grow up and find himself and get rid of all the negativity inside of him was just pure bliss.
