Who didn't see this coming? The lack of exclusives hurts a console in the long run, and this is a great case study in that regard. Meanwhile, Game Pass subscriptions have doubled, though it's questionable as to how profitable it is for MS. Things aren't looking bright for the next Xbox consoles.
Microsoft putting games on PC and Game Pass is hurting them in the long run, thanks to lower Xbox Live Gold and hardware revenue. This does the end user no favors either, as Xbox first-party games are also embracing the service-like business model to justify their cost of development.
It'll be interesting to see how their next console fares, with consumers knowing well in advance that everything available on the platform can be played elsewhere.

Topping Steam charts but not putting a dent in charts like NPD. Says a lot lol.

Growth in overall revenue is not unexpected, as there are more gamers each year. Game Pass is bringing in revenue, but is it profitable? How much of the revenue translates to profits? Both Sony and Nintendo share their fiscal net profits.

Obviously, the YoY %age increase in hardware revenue is going to be huge with the launch of a new console. How many units sold tho? And what's the split between Series X and S? lol

LMAO

Imagine thinking a $2 trillion company has to adhere to the same format of reporting as Sony or Nintendo. Hilarious.

Game Pass is bringing in revenue, but is it profitable?
PS5 is bringing in revenue, but it is being sold at a loss 🤷‍♂️

A bigger SoC (than PS5), higher yield issues as a result, higher quality components, "full RDNA2 features zomg"...being sold at a loss is a bigger concern wrt the Series X lol.

PlayStation reported $3.23 Billion gross profits from a revenue of $25 Billion in FY20. The stats are crystal clear. Xbox made $15 Billion gaming revenue, but where are the profits? We know PlayStation is profitable regardless of whether the PS5 hardware is. But what about Xbox?

We know Xbox just spent $7.5bn on Zenimax and is releasing all their games on Game Pass, whereas Sony doesn't think this model is sustainable for them. Go figure "zomg profitable" lol

Sony also has other businesses but announces FY stats for each division and doesn't roll them up with each other to make the less successful ones seem like they're thriving 🤷‍♂️

Moar Personal Compooting...is this legal? 🤣

The funny thing was that Sony's gaming division kept Sony's other departments (specifically the mobile department) floating, whereas for the Xbox, it was the other way around lol i.e. other MS's divisions keeping Xbox afloat and then buying their kid studios to play with now in hopes of being "profitable".

And the notorious stopping of reporting numbers for Xbox sales by MS when PS4 launched lol

Exactly. This might be Xbox's last console generation if the hardware fails to be profitable. Here's hoping Game Pass fans are aware the service's price will increase once a certain million subscribers have been hauled in via cheap deals lol.

The person who owns a digital only console is talking about blu ray royalties....yikes!

No way?!? Subscription services don't remain at launch price forever? Shocking revelation. 🤣

Fortunately, Game Pass more than justifies its price already 🤷

Fantastic!

On Playstation's side, devs are still charging for remasters.

Judgement is going for 30$.

MS is pounding them this gen.

So umm ... If I may interrupt the strategy discussion of multi billion dollar companies ...

Any recommends on whether a 1080p or a 2k screen is better for a Xbox Series S?

Series S's max output is 1440p, so that.

The Series consoles both support VRR, so if you are planning to get a monitor for it, I'd say try to secure one which supports Freesync.

I would really really recommend against series S..it may seem like a good value but when you look closer it's anything but

VRR believer among us. Who woulda thunk Chandoo would switch to a monitor for console gaming.

Now how to get on the DLSS hype train? :p
