Kingsman Movie Prequel is Officially Titled The King's Man

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Gemma Arterton, Tom Hollander, and more have joined the cast of Kingsman: The Great Game, Matthew Vaughn's prequel Kingsman movie. While Taron Egerton starred in the first two Kingsman films, the third entry in the franchise will not star him and will instead go back to an older period for the secret organization.
Vaughn has big plans for the Kingsman franchise, and the next step will be a World War I-set story that follows a new lead character by the name of Conrad, a young son of a British Duke, played by Harris Dickinson. At the time of his casting, it was also revealed that Ralph Fiennes joined the movie, and there has been plenty of casting news since then too, with Charles Dance, Daniel Brühl, and more reportedly enrolling in the ensemble.

Thanks to some new information from Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye, it appears Kingsman: The Great Game has several brand new cast members. Bamigboye revealed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is reuniting with his Kick-Assdirector for the prequel film in an undisclosed role. He shared in some follow-up tweets that Gemma Arterton, Tom Hollander, Djimon Hounsou, and Alison Steadman have all joined the cast. Arterton will play the nanny of Conrad, while Hollander will play three different members of Queen Victoria's family tree.

The reunion between Taylor-Johnson and Vaughn is a long time coming, but also will be a return for Taylor-Johnson to bigger, more mainstream movies. After a string of blockbusters that included Godzilla and Avengers: Age of Ultron, he has transitioned more into independent cinema, which resulted in a Golden Globes win two years ago for Nocturnal Animals. Arterton has similarly gone to smaller movies as of late, while Hollander just appeared in Bohemian Rhapsody and Hounsou will be in both Captain Marvel and Shazam! early this year.

It appears that Vaughn has once again managed to assemble an impressive cast for his latest Kingsman movie based on these additions. Fox previously set a November 2019 release date for an untitled Kingsman movie that is believed to be The Great Game, and Bamigboye's mention of filming now being underway backs up prior reports that
filming would begin in January. The plan is for Vaughn to direct both Kingsman: The Great Gameand Kingsman 3 back-to-back, with just a short break in between. If that is still the plan, then the full cast and start of production on Kingsman: The Great Game signals the beginning of Vaughn's master plan to potentially close out the Kingsman story.

Kingsman Prequel Delayed to February 2020

Fox has delayed Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman prequel to February 2020 and given its old November date to James Mangold's Ford v. Ferrari, instead. The move comes at a time of great change for the studio, with Disney projected to finalize its purchase of 21st Century Fox's assets in March. This will reportedly result in thousands of job losses at Fox and sweeping alterations to the studio's larger release slate, as well as a monumental shift in the larger media landscape that gives the Mouse House an unpredecented monopoly.
The Kingsman prequel, which is currently titled Kingsman: The Great Game, is the next step in Vaughn's plans to build a shared Kingsman universe that includes a TV series and sequel to 2017's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, in addition to a spinoff movie about the Statesmen. It's not clear yet how the Disney-Fox deal will impact those plans, especially if The Great Game under-performs after the previous Kingsman films took in more than $400 million apiece. The delay to February could be part of Fox's attempt to improve the prequel's box office prospects, seeing as the original Kingsman: The Secret Service struck gold when it opened that month back in 2015.

THR is reporting that the Kingsman prequel will now hit theaters on February 14, 2020, with Ford v. Ferrari taking its former spot on November 15, 2019. The delay isn't altogether surprising, considering The Great Game only just started production with a top-notch cast that's confirmed to include Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Gemma Arterton, Stanely Tucci, Matthew Goode, Djimon Hounsou, and Charles Dance, among others. That means Vaughn will now have an actual year to finish shooting and editing the film, as opposed to the nine-month turnaround he was previously facing.

As for Ford v. Ferrari: the movie is a biopic about the Ford company's attempt to unsurp its top competitor Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans. The film was originally scheduled to arrive this summer on June 28, which was always a bit odd considering it has awards season contender written all over it. Indeed, in addition to its prestigious historical subject matter, the movie's being cowritten and directed by Mangold (who's coming off his achievement with
Logan) and features Matt Damon and Christian Bale as its leads, with names like Jon Bernthal and Outlander's Caitriona Balfe filling out the ensemble. With a cast and production team that stacked with talent, it's not hard to imagine this one gaining traction in the next Oscar race.

Circling back to Kingsman - The Great Game should dominate the Valentine's frame when it opens next year. The prequel will face off with movies like the
Nimona comic book adaptation and an untitled Disney live-action fairy tale, but is expected to earn the same R-rating as its predecessors and will serve as counter-programming to those far more family-friendly films. Meanwhile, Ford v. Ferrari will open against Bill Condon's con artist drama The Good Liar and Paul Feig's rom-com Last Christmas. All three releases are geared towards older audiences, but are pretty different from one another and shouldn't have too much trouble attracting a decent-sized crowd over the week before the far more competitive Thanksgiving frame.

Kingsman Prequel The Great Game Reportedly Moving Forward At Disney

Kingsman: The Great Game is reportedly still happening after Disney's purchase of Fox assets cast some doubt over the franchise's future. Over the past year, the entertainment industry has been dominated by talk of Disney purchasing certain Fox assets and after a protracted period of negotiation, rival counter-bids and legal wrangling, the deal was finally completed earlier this year. Of course, this means that Fox's properties are now in the white-gloved hands of a certain Mickey Mouse, including X-Men, The Simpsons and theKingsman franchise.
Based on the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons graphic novel of the same name, Matthew Vaughn's original Kingsman was released in 2014 to widespread critical praise and considerable box office success, as it merged the worlds of spy-action and comedy in a unique and refreshing way. Sequel The Golden Circle hit theaters in 2017 with a star-studded cast, making a similar amount of money but attracting a more mixed reaction from fans and critics. A third filmhas since been announced titled The Great Game, set during the spy organization's formative years and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Charles Dance, Gemma Arterton and many more new faces.

According to THR, Disney are now in the process of deciding which acquired properties they want to press on with and which are being ditched and the report lists Kingsman: The Great Game in the former camp. The prequel was green-lit at Fox by their film president Emma Watts, who has since been retained by Disney and this may have played a part in the decision.

Since the Disney-Fox deal was completed, various in-development movies have been cast aside, the most profile arguably being Mouse Guard, based on the comic book series by David Petersen. As such, the future of Kingsman 3was far from certain and it remains to be seen whether there will be more casualties in the coming months. It was reported at the time that Mouse Guardwas dropped because it was deemed too expensive for a non-franchise film. This may also help explain the decision to carry on with Kingsman, as the series has an established following and the second film didn't show any significant drop-off in box office.

While this news will no doubt come as a huge relief to those looking forward to the third Kingsman installment, Disney's approach may prove concerning for some movie fans who champion original material over endless sequels and remakes. Kingsman: The Great Game is undoubtedly a safer bet than an ambitious project like Mouse Guard but in an industry that is centered on creativity and imagination, building new franchises is just as important as continuing established ones, if not more so.

Kingsman: The Great Game is currently slated for release on February 14th 2020.

Kingsman Movie Prequel is Officially Titled The King's Man

Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman movie prequel is officially titled The King's Man. Based on Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar's The Secret Service comic books, the Kingsman films launched with 2015's Kingsman: The Secret Service, with Vaughn directing a cast that included Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie served as an origin story for Egerton's character, Gary "Eggsy" Unwin, and followed him as he transformed from an ex-Royal Marines trainee to an agent who works for Britain's top-secret spy organization, aka. The Kingsman.
The Secret Service was mostly received well-received by critics and earned enough at the box office ($414 million worldwide on an $81 million budget) to get a sequel green-lit. The second film, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, didn't go over so well with critics, but still made a bundle ($411 million on an $104 million budget), and led to Vaughn getting the go-ahead on a Kingsman movie prequel. However, the film will not be titled Kingsman: The Great Game, as the director himself recently confirmed.

Instead, Fox has announced the the film is simply called The King's Man. You can check out the official logo above, then read on for the prequel's newly-released synopsis:
As a collection of history's worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them. Discover the origins of the very first independent intelligence agency in THE KING'S MAN, directed by Matthew Vaughn, coming to theaters February 2020.

Written by Vaughn, his writing partner Jane Goldman, and Karl Gajdusek (Oblivion), The King's Man will take place in the early 20th century and - as suggested by its title and synopsis - reveal how the Kingsmen came to be in the first place. Among those starring in the film are Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Brühl, Djimon Hounsou, Gemma Arterton, and Matthew Goode, in addition to Charles Dance and Harris Dickinson. The latter previously made a name for himself playing J. Paul Getty III in Simon Beaufoy's Trust miniseries, and may continue to break-out as an actor over the forthcoming months, thanks to his roles in August's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance prequel series and October's Disney live-action sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Fittingly, he's also playing the young protagonist in The King's Man, with Fiennes' character serving as his mentor (a la Eggsy and Harry Hart from the previous Kingsmanmovies).

Speaking of Eggsy and Harry (Firth) - Vaughn has said that he intends to eventually complete both the pair's story and his original Kingsman trilogy with
Kingsman 3 (official title TBD). The filmmaker hasn't changed his plans since Disney bought Fox either, and recently indicated that production on Kingsman 3 could begin around the same time that The King's Man hits theaters in early 2020, if not sooner. Hopefully, the director's Kingsman prequel will go over well enough with fans that they're left wanting to see even more of this particularly idiosyncratic comic book-based universe. Otherwise, that could mean trouble for the next movie and whatever other Kingsman world-building that Vaughn's got planned.
