Child's Play Movie Reboot Gets Summer 2019 Release Date

Rumors about the Child's Playreboot have potentially revealed Chucky's new origin story. It was announced back in July that a reboot of the 1988 horror film was in development at MGM and those rumors proved to be true since the film's expected director Lars Klevberg teased the beginning of the production for Child's Play.
Child's Play is one of several long-running horror franchises that just won't die. After director Tom Holland's first film, six sequels released. Most recently, Cult of Chuckydid well with the horror community, since it brought Alex Vincent back as Andy Barclay, and was even certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was directed by Don Mancini, who has worked as a writer on all seven installments of the series and has directed the past three Chuckyfilms. While he won't be involved with MGM's reboot, Mancini is currently working on a Child's Play TV series with actor Brad Dourif attached to once again voice the demonic doll. The origin of Chucky has stayed mostly faithful to the original film, but it looks like the reboot will be tweaking it quite a bit.

Unknown sources explained to ComicBook how the origin story of Chucky will be altered compared to the 1988 film. The story is rumored to be about a possessed "Buddy Doll" who is programmed to be violent and have zero limitations by a Chinese factory worker named Chen. Chen is then said to kill himself after re-programming the doll. In the original film, serial killer Charles Lee Ray put his soul into a Good Guy doll by using Voodoo before his physical body was killed by pursuing police officers.

There haven't been a lot of solid details about MGM's Child's Play reboot; however, Liv Tyler was reportedly being considered for a role. That being said, the progress being made on the film reboot shouldn't effect Mancini's TV show since the rights to the character are rather complicated. MGM owns the rights to the first film while Universal owns the rights to the sequels meaning both a Chucky TV show and a movie could potentially be in production at the same time.

If this rumor about Chucky's new origin turns out to be true, it will drastically change how the evil doll is created. There is also some merit behind the rumor since it was previously reported that this version of Child's Play would focus on a
high-tech version of Chucky. This news may anger some long-time horror fans since it would reinvent the character, but it wouldn't be the first time an iconic horror legend has been altered from the source material. Regardless of what happens with the reboot, it really does seem like Chucky will be a friend till the end since the character doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon.

Child's Play Creator Negatively Reacts to Reveal of Remake's Chucky

Via Twitter, Mancini reacted to Chucky’s new look in MGM’s reboot with a simple (but very straightforward) message. Fans of Mancini and the Child’s Play franchise celebrated his reaction, and have been showing their support to the filmmaker.

Starring in the reboot will be Gabriel Bateman as Andy Barclay, Aubrey Plaza as Karen Barclay (Andy’s mother), and Brian Tyree Henry as Det. Mike Norris. The story will follow the same line as the original, in which a mother gives her son a toy doll as a birthday present “unaware of its more sinister nature”. However, it's been heavily rumored that Chucky’s origin will be entirely different: instead of being possessed by a serial killer, the story will be about a possessed “Buddy Doll” programmed to be violent by a Chinese factory worker named Chen, who later kills himself after re-programming the doll.

Child's Play Movie Reboot Gets Summer 2019 Release Date & Poster

MGM and Orion Pictures' reboot of Child's Play, featuring an updated high-tech Chucky, gets a summer 2019 release date as well as a new poster. An unlikely hit upon its release in 1988, the original Child's Play brought a killer doll spin to the slasher movie genre, introducing audiences to the now-iconic Chucky, a kid's toy with the soul of a serial killer.
Sequels ensued after the success of Child's Play, the last coming with 2017's Cult of Chucky. The original movie was more-or-less a straight-forward thriller, but subsequent installments in the franchise would take things in a more outrageous and at times even satiric direction. Now, Orion Pictures and MGM are seeking to rebootChild's Play with a redesigned Chucky, and Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henryheading up the cast.

Production recently kicked off on the new Child's Play, and now Orion has announced a release date for the reboot. Fans of killer-doll mayhem should mark their calendars, as Chucky returns to screens on June 21st, 2019. Interestingly, this release date will put the movie in direct competition with another horror remake in Sony's The Grudge. Two such films coming out the same weekend - assuming release dates don't move before then - is just more proof of how big horror movies are becoming as blockbuster season players. In addition to the release date, the studio also revealed new poster art. See the poster below:

"More than a toy, he's your best friend," is obviously a reference to the originalChild's Play "Good Guy" doll, whose packaging included the tagline "He wants you for a best friend." In another nod to the original Child's Play, the new "Good Guy" doll is named "Buddi," an homage to the real-life "My Buddy" doll that served as inspiration for the look of Chucky.
The new movie's brief official synopsis reads, "Child’s Play follows a mother who gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature." That is basically the exact synopsis of the original Child's Play, so fans can look forward to a reboot that sticks pretty close to the source material at least in terms of story. As for Chucky himself, it's already been revealed that the new doll will be updated for our more technologically sophisticated times, and indeed a close look at the box in the above poster reveals nods to this fact as well. Chucky will also get a new origin storythat doesn't involve a serial killer taking possession of the doll, but instead sees a Chinese factory worker re-programming the high-tech toy to have no limitations.

It remains to be seen whether fans will embrace the new take on Chucky, but it's perhaps worth noting that original Child's Play creator Don Mancini has already indicated
that he's not a fan. Of course, Mancini continues to develop his own Child's Play TV series with original Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif on board, so he has reason to be competitive.

Mark Hamill is Voicing Chucky in Child's Play Remake

Mark Hamill has officially been tapped to voice Chucky in the upcoming reboot of Child's Play, which is set to release later this year. Hamill previously teased a big announcement coming today on his social media accounts, though most were assuming it had something to do with the upcoming Star Wars movie.
The role of Chucky was made famous by Brad Dourif, who portrayed the character in seven films and will continue to voice the character in anupcoming television series (which takes place in the original continuity, unlike the reboot). Two different versions of the character existing at once might seem confusing enough, but the rebooted Child's Play will be released theatrically and has a more recognizable cast (including Aubrey Plaza as the star) compared to the original timeline, which has existed as a straight-to-video property for quite some time.

The announcement of Hamill in the role of Chucky in the rebooted Child's Playwas confirmed at WonderCon, with the actor himself announcing it via video. Hamill promises to "present the character in a way you've never seen him before" and that he's excited to be playing such a well-known character. For a look at the full announcement, check out the video below:

While it's certainly a shocking move bringing an actor of Hamill's caliber to the role of Chucky, it actually fits with the actor's past. Hamill is well-regarded for his voice acting work, from his time on Batman: The Animated Series as the Joker to Hobgoblin in the '90s Spider-Man animated show. He's also been nominated for several different awards for his voice acting, including a Daytime Emmy Award. This isn't even getting into his legendary performances as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films. While some fans may be disappointed that Dourif is being replaced (and that the Chucky will get a new look) in the upcoming reboot, Hamill is arguably a great choice to fill his shoes.

Even so, reboots of famous horror films are quite a gamble for studios to make. Rarely do they ever live up to the original in the eyes of both general audiences and critics. That has changed somewhat in recent years, with the remake of
IT being a monstrous hit and the upcoming Pet Sematary remake getting solid early reviews. Perhaps this reboot of Child's Play can follow suit; and with a cast like Plaza and Hamill at the helm, it's easy to imagine that being the case. Still, fans will have to wait until this summer to decide for themselves how it ranks among the long-running series and how it compares to the forthcoming television series.
