Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Sequel Casts Danny DeVito

We've already received word from Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman that Jumanji 3will be released for the 2019 holidays, and now franchise star Dwayne Johnson has confirmed the film is "officially underway." Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle, the reboot/sequel to the 1995 original starring Robin Williams was a smash success for Sony. The movie is the studio's highest grossing film domestically and has earned almost $1 billion worldwide. Due to the financial success of the flick, it was no surprise that the studio would be quickly working on a third installment in the franchise, bringing back cast members Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black.
A Christmas 2019 release date will see Jumanji 3 once again go up against another powerhouse franchise. Star Wars: Episode IXis also scheduled to release then, once again pitting the two franchises against each other at the box office. Welcome to The Jungle hit theaters just five days after Star Wars: The Last Jedi opened in 2017. Both movies were box office gold and Sony is gearing up for another billion dollar battle.

ohnson took to his Instagram account to announce that the sequel had officially kicked off, also confirming that Welcome to the Jungle writer/director Jake Kasdan has returned, and will team up with writers Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg to pen the script. Once again, Johnson will be doing double duty on the film, serving not only as star but as executive producer as part of his Seven Bucks Production company.

Many were skeptical that the reboot of the Robin Williams classic would be successful, but the box office numbers don't lie. Johnson has also become a fan favorite and box office draw, appealing to the masses by appearing in a wide variety of movies from Disney's family flick Moana to the raunchy R-rated comedy Baywatch as well as starring as a former pro football player turned sports agent in HBO's hit Ballers. It seems that much of what Johnson touches turns to gold and Sony is banking on an even bigger box office with the Jumanjisequel. Johnson is also a pro at social media and knows how to get his fans and followers excited about his upcoming projects. There's no doubt that Johnson will keep his fans and followers up to date on all Jumanji 3 developments, continually building excitement up until its release date.

The actor, producer and director also confirmed that all the cast members from Welcome to The Jungle
will be returning in the sequel, tagging them all in his post. Welcome to The Jungle saw four teenagers get sucked into a video game version of Jumani where they became their video game avatars. Gillan will return as Ruby Roundhouse, Johnson as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Hart as Franklin "Moose" Finbar and Black as Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon as well as Nick Jonas as Seaplane McDonough.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Sequel Casts Danny DeVito

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Danny DeVito will join Dwayne Johnson and company in the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji 3.Crazy Rich Asians actress Awkwafina also recently joined the cast of the action-comedy follow-up, which is due to begin filming in early 2019.
Now a movie and TV legend, DeVito first became a star thanks to his Emmy-winning role as Louie De Palma on the classic sitcom Taxi. The diminutive actor, known for his high energy and gruff delivery, developed into one of the most unlikely leading men in Hollywood in the 1980s through roles in movies like Ruthless People, Twins and Other People's Money. DeVito scored one of his most memorable roles of all-time when he played the Penguin in Tim Burton's 1992 superhero sequel Batman Returns.

      As reported by
Variety, DeVito will now return to the world of franchise action by taking on a role opposite Dwayne Johnson in the next installment in theJumanji series. Details of DeVito's character are being kept under wraps. The actor of course has experience teaming up with major action stars, having worked alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the comedies Twins and Junior. DeVito joins a Jumanji ensemble that includes Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan. The film is a follow-up to 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which was a surprise smash for Sony with grosses of $962 million worldwide. The film was itself a loose sequel to the 1995 Jumanji starring Robin Williams.

Indeed, DeVito himself could have starred in the original Jumanji, as the film arrived in the middle of his peak period as both an actor and director. After becoming a major comedic star, DeVito crossed over into the world of directing with Throw Momma From the Train, which he followed up with the black comedy The War of the Roses and the beloved dark children's film Matilda. In recent years, DeVito has settled into a leading role as Frank on the long-running sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. DeVito is also set to work with Burton again in the live action
Dumbo, and there's still talk of him re-teaming with Schwarzenegger for the comedy sequel Triplets.

Over the decades, DeVito has certainly established himself as one of the most distinctive and popular comedic actors around. Sony's follow-up to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle had already put together an interesting ensemble with Awkwafina joining Johnson, Hart, Black and Gillan, but now that cast is even spicier with DeVito lending his madcap talents to the mix. Sony is hoping to hit big with their next Jumanji movie,
which is set to go up against Star Wars IX in the 2019 holiday window. The last time a Jumanji film took on the biggest brand in the galaxy, the underdog knocked the champion from the #1 spot at the box office.

Nick Jonas Officially Returning for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Sequel

Actor and singer Nick Jonas is officially returning for the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel. Jonas will reprise his role as Alex for the follow-up to Sony's 2017 installment. The untitled Jumanji sequel, the third in the series, is set to release in December.
The news surrounding Jonas' return comes just after the core young cast was announced to return for the sequel, including Alex Wolff, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, and Morgan Turner. The major stars of the 2017 sequel, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan will also be back to reprise their roles as the teens' video game avatars. They will be joined bynewcomers to the franchise, Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, and Awkwafina.

The confirmation of Jonas' return (via Deadline) indicates that each main protagonist has signed on for the next Jumanji journey. Not many details regarding the plot have been announced, but it seems quite obvious that the teens will get sucked back into the world of Jumanji. Technically, Jonas played the Jumanji avatar, Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough, the fifth player in the game. The in-game character was controlled by a teenager named Alex who was stuck in the game for 20 years before the other teens found him.

How the teens get forced back into Jumanji will certainly be interesting considering they presumably destroyed the game. Director Jake Kasdan will look to expand the Jumanji lore just as he did with the last installment. The video game aspect added a modernized feel to the sequel but it was the stellar cast that really drew in audiences. Fans of the original film were initially skeptical of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. It went on to become a mega-hit for Sony so it would be no surprise to see the franchise continue to grow for years to come. Whether or not the main cast stays on board for the duration is yet to be determined, but if this latest sequel proves successful, their involvement seems inevitable. As of right now, Jumanji 3 remains as one of the most anticipated films of the year.

Even if Jonas' return to the sequel is for a minor role, he's still set for a very busy year. Aside from his recent marriage to Priyanka Chopra, he booked roles in the upcoming films,
Chaos Walking and Midway. Jonas is also voicing a role in the animated film, UglyDolls, hitting theaters this May. In total, Jonas has four films slated to release this year. He even has his eyes set on taking over the role of Batman. Add that to his music career and the man is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
