Rambo V: Last Blood Gets a September 2019 Release Date

Sylvester Stallone will reportedly star in the long in-development Rambo 5 with an eye on directing the film as well. Already a superstar thanks to the success of Rocky and the film’s many sequels, Stallone created yet another big screen icon 1982 with First Blood, the story of a Vietnam War veteran named John Rambo, who kicked into survival mode when he became the target of a tyrannical law enforcement official when he turned up in a small town.

With a modest budget of $15 million, First Blood became a solid box office hit, grossing $47.2 million domestically. It was a big enough return to give Stallone the opportunity to make Rambo: First Blood Part II in 1985, which scored a blockbuster $150 million stateside. Not surprisingly, Rambo III followed suit in 1988, but since it earned a disappointing $53.7 domestically, Stallone all but retired the character the actor-filmmaker brought the action character back one more time for Rambo in 2008. Like the previous installment, however, Rambo earned an underwhelming tally of just $42.7 million at the domestic box office, and the character went dormant once again. Even though he’s been working on a script for years (and has even considered making a Rambo TV series), it still comes as a somewhat unexpected development that Stallone is finally bringing Rambo out of retirement one more time.

According to Screen International, Stallone is slated to star and possibly direct Rambo 5, even though the film has not been confirmed by the actor-filmmaker’s representatives. The publication says Stallone is working on the script, which surrounding the kidnapping of the daughter of one of Rambo’s friends. Deadline adds, “Rambo, who has been working on a ranch, crosses the U.S.-Mexican border and quickly finds himself up against the full might of one of Mexico’s most violent cartels.”

While the return of Rambo will come as great news to Stallone fans, it will be interesting to see whether the Rambo character will have enough appeal to draw in audiences over 35 years after the debut of the original film. Obviously, Stallone struggled to recapture the popularity of Rambo – after his peak in First Blood Part II – with the third and fourth Rambo films, so Rambo 5 is no doubt a huge risk.
Stallone has defied the odds before, however, as he brought Rocky Balboa back to the big screen in a respectful way with the character’s supporting role as the aging trainer to Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), in Creed in 2015, which paved the way for Creed 2 to release this coming November. With any luck, Stallone will be taking the same tact with John Rambo in Rambo 5 by portraying the character in the proper stage of his life rather than making his actions and abilities seem unrealistic. Or, it could be that he’s doing the film to effectively pass the torch on to somebody else, which is obviously the purpose of the Creed films.

Rambo 5: Sergio Peris-Mencheta Cast As Last Blood's Villain

Rambo 5: Last Blood has found its main villain in Sergio Peris-Mencheta. Rambo 5is a project that’s been stuck in development hell for years, and at one stage it appeared doubtful it would happen. Stallone resurrected the iconic soldier for 2008’sRambo and talk of another sequel soon followed. The story was originally based on a book named Hunter, which followed a legendary tracker being tasked with hunting a feral monster created by the government. Stallone felt the story would make a natural fit with the Rambo character, but after the concept met with fan derision, he went back to the drawing board.
The actor soon became absorbed in The Expendables series, so Rambo 5 was put on a backburner. Over the years it would resurface, only for another project to push it back again. Stallone also had something of a falling out with the production company behind it, which led to him announcing his retirement from the franchise in 2015. A TV series exploring Rambo’s Vietnam days was put in development shortly afterward, but now Stallone will reprise the role one final time for Rambo 5: Last Blood

Rambo 5’s story finds the character living a quiet life back in America when a friend’s daughter is kidnapped by human traffickers; he soon mounts a bloody rescue mission to Mexico to save her. Naturally, this won’t make him any friends with the cartel in charge, and now Deadline is reporting Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Snowfall) will play the main villain of the story.

Paz Vega was also recently cast as a journalist Rambo befriends during his new mission. The previous Rambo ended with the character returning home after decades in self-imposed exile, and the first look photos of him dressed in rancher clothes have come as a big surprise to fans. He'll no longer sport long hair either, but recent photos posted to Stallone’s social media accounts confirm his trademark knife will return.

Apparently, part of Rambo 5: Last Blood’s long development was down to Stallone feeling that maybe the series ended on a strong note with Rambo, and he wanted to make sure there was a worthwhile story before sporting the bandana and M-60 again. If that’s the case, it’s encouraging the project is finally moving ahead, because just like Rocky, Rambo is a character that means just as much to Stallone as it does to his fans.

Rambo V: Last Blood Gets a September 2019 Release Date

Rambo V: Last Bloodhas officially gotten a September 2019 release date. The first Rambo movie titled First Blood was released in 1982, starring Sylvester Stallone as a Vietnam War veteran being hunted down by a corrupt sheriff and his deputies. Ever since then, John Rambo has become an action movie icon, appearing in a number of films over the years.
Stallone has starred in each Rambosequel since 1982, but he has also acted as a writer for the original film and each of its sequels. Stallone even went as far as to star in, write, and direct the fourth Rambo film in 2009, which was simply called Rambo. Rumors of a fifth Rambo go back all the way to 2008, butStallone confirmed Rambo 5 was moving forward and would be titled Rambo V: Last Blood back in 2014. The official plot synopsis for Rambo V: Last Blood is currently unknown, but new Rambo V images that were released this month tease another rescue mission storyline, as well as Rambo going up against a cartel. Now, it looks like Rambo V: Last Blood has officially gotten a release date.

According to The Wrap, Lionsgate has set a September 20, 2019 release date for Rambo V: Last Blood. So far, not a lot of movies have been given a September 2019 release date. Rambo V will see direct competition from the Downtown Abbey movie as well as Black and Blue on that date.Rambo V: Last Blood will also be facing competition from IT: Chapter Twoand Spies in Disguise, both of which are being released earlier in the month.

While Stallone is obviously returning for the Rambo sequel, he will also have some fresh faces appearing on screen with him. Actress Paz Vega will co-star in Rambo V: Last Blood, appearing as a journalist who accompanies Rambo in his fight against a cartel who kidnapped her sister. In October 2018, it was also announced that Sergio Peris-Mencheta would be playing the villain of the film, although not a lot of details surrounding his character are known at this time.

While Rambo V: Last Blood may be facing some stiff competition in September, die-hard Rambo fans are still likely to come out to see the newestRambo flick. After all, this is supposedly going to be Stallone's last outing as Rambo, as we have seen Stallone start to retire some of his famous characters.
Creed IImarked Stallone's last appearance as Rocky Balboa, and he now seems to be retiring another one of his famous characters this year. Needless to say, Stallone will no doubt be able to pull people back to the theaters for Rambo V: Last Blood in September simply on nostalgia alone.
