Street Fighter 5’s next trio of characters revealed

Includes DLC, new Arcade mode and more

Capcom will release Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition, an updated version of the fighting game that includes new modes and the first two seasons of downloadable characters, on Jan. 16, 2018, the company announced today.
Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition will add Arcade Mode, Extra Battle Mode and new V-Trigger moves to the fighting game. Capcom also promises a vast gallery of illustrations and “a completely redesigned” user interface for the game.
Here’s how Capcom describes the two new modes coming to Street Fighter 5:
In the upcoming Arcade Mode, players can reminisce in the Street Fighter series history as they celebrate the last 30 years of the multi-million selling franchise. Choose from six different paths and compete in matches against CPU opponents to reveal unique endings based on player performance. In Extra Battle Mode, a new series of time exclusive challenges will be available for players to use their Fight Money for the chance to receive an exclusive premium outfit each month. Complete all four challenges each month and receive a special premium costume exclusive to this mode. With extra challenges being added and more unannounced content on the way, Street Fighter V will continue to deliver new and refreshed content on a regular basis throughout 2018 and beyond.
As seen in screenshots of Arcade Mode in the gallery below, players will be able to fight through a series of matches and bonus stages based on past Street Fighter games (the original Street Fighter, Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter Alpha and more).
Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition will be priced at $39.99 on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. Existing owners of Street Fighter 5 will get Arcade Edition’s new modes and UI improvements — but not its DLC characters, which are sold separately and can be earned with in-game Fight Money — for free via an in-game update.

Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition trailer teases some sweet new moves

New V-Triggers, mix ups and more

When Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition hits PlayStation 4 and Windows PC next year, the update will include new moves — specifically new V-Trigger attacks — for every character. But that’s not all that’s coming in Capcom’s update for Street Fighter 5, as illustrated by a new teaser trailer for Arcade Edition.
In addition to new V-Triggers, new combo extenders, mix ups and abilities will be added for characters like Ken, Guile, Birdie, Menat, R. Mika, Ibuki and others.
In addition to new moves, Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition will include UI improvements and new modes. The re-release will be priced at $39.99, but existing Street Fighter 5owners will get that new content for free via an in-game update.
Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition hits PS4 and PC on Jan. 18, 2018.
Capcom also revealed some new costumes coming to Street Fighter 5, including “nostalgia” costumes for Chun-li, Balrog, Birdie (who gets his six-pack abs back) and Karen, as well as a batch of festive holiday costumes for Alex, Menat, Karin and Cammy. You can see those, plus two additional combat costumes for Chun-li, in the gallery below.

Street Fighter 5’s third season of characters revealed at Capcom Cup 2017

All six characters will be part of the Arcade Edition

During the finals of this year’s Capcom Cup fighting tournament at PlayStation Experience, Street Fighter executive producer Yoshinori Ono revealed all of the upcoming season three characters for Street Fighter 5.
Fans expected at least one announcement during the live event: the debut of fan favorite Sakura, as she’s been teased for quite some time. They got exactly what they expected, with Sakura’s introduction to Street Fighter 5 immediately following the closing ceremony of the Capcom Cup.
In her trailer below, not only do we get to see Sakura’s most recent incarnation (which sees her transitioning from schoolgirl attire to something a bit more business casual), but we also get to see both of her V-Trigger moves. In the upcoming Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition, every character will get a second V-Trigger move, which is a special skill unique to each character. We also caught a first glimpse of the new stage appearing along with Sakura, Kasugano Residence, which appears to be Sakura’s backyard.

As customary with each new character reveal, Sakura’s trailer teased the release of the other characters included in season three, which will be hitting Arcade Edition when it launches on Jan. 16. What fans didn’t expect was yet another trailer, this time for the cinematic opening for the Arcade Edition, which revealed all of season three’s characters.

Fans watching live at the Capcom Cup finals cheered in excitement at the sudden reveal of multiple favorites returning to the Street Fighter 5 cast, including Blanka, Sagat and Cody. The trailer also revealed two brand new characters: G, who looks like an Abraham Lincoln-esque brawler whose body is partially covered in gold, and Falke, who appears to be associated with series newcomer Ed.
While we know that Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition is set to launch on PlayStation 4 and PC on Jan. 16, along with Sakura, the release schedule for the rest of the new characters has not be confirmed yet.

Street Fighter 5 finally feels like a complete packageTwo years after its release, Arcade Edition fleshes out the gameStreet Fighter has to serve many different roles to many different types of fans. The series longevity and memorable characters appeal to casual fans, giving them an arcade mode and story to tear through, while its methodical pace and high skill ceiling give competitive players a lot to chew through. But when Street Fighter 5 came out back in 2016, fans across that spectrum were somewhat disappointed. The game’s lack of story mode or arcade mode made many people wonder exactly what they were spending $60 for, and its original roster wasn’t favored by pro players. While a lot of additions have been made in the last two years — including 12 DLC characters and a three- hour story mode — Street Fighter: Arcade Edition finally puts the current game in a final package that should satisfy pretty much everyone. New skills for every character, a robust arcade mode and a cleanly defined visual style make this feel like the Street Fighter game we were expecting two years ago.street fighter five arcade mode menu Street Fighter 5’s new arcade mode. Each previous game inspires its own string of fights. CapcomStreet Fighter: Arcade Edition’s titular arcade mode feels like far more than just a welcome mat for casual players. It features simplified versions of the storyline for each previous Street Fighter entry, going all the way back to 1987’s Street Fighter. It uses the characters that would have been available in that title (or in some cases, appropriate stand-ins), with obvious spots to slot in fights from the third wave of DLC characters (like Sagat as the penultimate boss of Street Fighter 2). These fights made me wistful, especially when I was taking on M. Bison on a crisp, HD version of his Street Fighter 2 stage. They even include the ridiculous bonus stages, like barrel smashing. The V-trigger system was Street Fighter 5’s most celebrated innovation, and Arcade Edition offers additional triggers for each fighter, which are selected before the match. These attacks power up characters in unexpected, nostalgic ways. Ryu’s second V-trigger is a counter that will crumple opponents when it connects, in the same way his focus attack would in Street Fighter 4. Ken gets access to a flaming, spinning kick that pulls opponents in, and Chun-Li’s new trigger — an energy blast that can be linked into combos — seems far more useful than her other V-trigger.A couple characters get fantastic new normal moves too. As a Ryu player who has not enjoyed him as much in Street Fighter 5, his new Donkey Kick feels like a solid addition, with both reach and power. The game’s new UI update is also pretty fantastic. I always appreciated the character art in this game, but it felt like the UI and game cohesiveness was lacking, especially when compared to the beautiful, thick ink brush strokes seen all over Street Fighter 4. In its new form, Street Fighter 5 sports glittery gold title cards, as well as wipes at the start of the match — little touches that are meant to invoke going live for a high-stakes bout.gold ui elements of street fighter 5 arcade edition on match screenArcade Edition’s UI updates on full display. CapcomThe game also feels snappier. The PlayStation 4 version of the original Street Fighter 5 suffered from nasty load times for matches (and playing would sometimes kick my PS4’s fan to buzzsaw volume levels). Matches in Arcade Edition were noticeably faster to load into; I was honestly surprised when the first one popped up so quickly.Street Fighter 5’s third season of DLC characters is just warming up with Sakura’s release. The series staple, who is now a little older than her previous high school iterations, plays with some of the same shoto moves as she’s always had, with some versatile additions. Her V-skill, Haru Kaze, is a speedy jump that can quickly put you in an opponent’s face, offering lots of combo opportunities. I love that Sakura blends the old and new, and hope she’s exemplary of how the rest of the season’s characters — a mix of favorites like Blanka, Sagat and Cody, and fresh faces like the mysterious G and Falke — flesh out the roster, taking what makes Street Fighter great and evolving it.Capcom has always promised Street Fighter 5 will be a singular title, eschewing the many-versions-under-one-number system it had employed for previous franchises entries. While some players may be salty that Arcade Edition offers the game’s 12 DLC characters for free to new players (characters could be purchased as part of a season pass, or by earning in-game Fight Money from completing challenges and matches), they’ll still benefit from the arcade mode, UI adjustments and character balance changes, which are being patched in for all Street Fighter 5 owners. But Arcade Edition is the perfect invitation for new players or those who passed on the game the first time around. Now, more than ever, is the best time to jump in.

Here’s Blanka in Street Fighter 5

The Amazon warrior will be available on Feb. 20

Blanka is coming to Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition next week, Capcom confirmed today. The character, who first appeared in Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior, will be the second fighter added to the game as part of Street Fighter 5’s Season 3 DLC.
Street Fighter 5’s Season 3 Character Pass costs $29.99, and Blanka will be available individually for $5.99 or 100,000 Fight Money.
In a new gameplay trailer, Capcom shows off Blanka’s new moves. Here are the official descriptions of his V-Skill, V-Triggers and Critical Art skills, via the Capcom Unity blog:
      V-Skill: Coward Crouch
Blanka immediately ducks for cover for a short time before rising back up. His V-Skill can avoid many attacks, including fireballs. After performing Coward Crouch, Blanka can follow up with either Wild Lift (Punch Button) or Raid Jump (Kick Button). Wild Lift sees Blanka move forward while swinging his arms up to launch the opponent in the air and can be followed up by a normal, special move, or even a Critical Art. Using Raid Jump, Blanka swiftly jumps in the air where he can use any mid-air attack to advance.
      V-Trigger I: Jungle Dynamo
Blanka’s V-Trigger I gives his special roll attacks more damage and can then be followed up by certain attacks, including his Critical Art. It also powers up his Electric Thunder and changes the animation so Blanka steps forward while unleashing the electric current. On hit, the opponent is launched slightly in the air and can be followed up with a rolling attack.
Finally, Jungle Dynamo unlocks Ground Shave Rolling (HP+HK), which can be used as a combo extender or a way to charge in. This move was a super move in previous games, but is now a special move in SFV: AE.
      V-Trigger II: Lightning Beast
Lightning Beast unlocks a special move, Rolling Cannon (Direction + HP+HK), which can be performed after using Rolling Attack, Back Step Rolling, and Vertical Rolling. Rolling Cannon can be used in multiple ways, such as extending a combo for more damage or changing positions to surprise the opponent.
      Critical Art: Dynamic Rolling
In this Critical Art, Blanka slams his opponent into the ground in a series of electrifying rolls that ends in a move reminiscent of Lightning Cannonball from Street Fighter IV.
Blanka will have a variety of looks in Street Fighter 5, with an ornate battle costume and a throwback classic costume. But it’s his story costume — Blanka dressed like a plush toy version of himself — that’s most interesting.
