BioWare delays Anthem features, including its Cataclysm event

Anthem’s 90-day roadmap gets an update

BioWare said on Tuesday that it’s delaying major features for Anthem, including the limited-time Cataclysm event that was expected in May, as it prioritizes other fixes, like bugs, stability, and “game flow.”
“We set aside time for this work, but the reality is there are more things to fix and improve than we planned for,” BioWare said in an update posted to the game’s subreddit. “While this is the best thing to do for the game, it means some items from the calendar will be delayed.”
The following features planned for the first act of Anthem — the game’s first 90 days — have been delayed:

      • Mastery System
      • Guilds
      • Legendary Missions – Phase II
      • Weekly Stronghold Challenge
      • Leaderboards
      • Some Freeplay Events
      • Cataclysm

While BioWare hasn’t said much about how the Mastery System will work, guilds and weekly Stronghold challenges were, like Cataclysms, much-needed endgame content. BioWare has described Anthem’s seasonal Cataclysm events as the game’s “most ambitious and challenging content.” They’ll feature “time-limited world events that cause physical manifestations to occur, extreme weather, incursions of dangerous enemies and new mysteries to solve,” according to the developer.
“The Cataclysm is an important addition to the game and it’s currently a big focus for the team,” BioWare said on Reddit. “The Cataclysm will bring new challenges and rewards and pushes the story of Anthem forward. As our work continues, we will share more with you in May.”
BioWare released an update for Anthem on Tuesday, which included quality-of-life improvements and a new Stronghold, Sunken Cell.

New Anthem patch finally adds endgame Cataclysm activity

New Masterworks and melee weapons are live in Anthem’s latest patch

On Tuesday, BioWare updated Anthem to patch 1.3.0. This long awaited update adds a host of new features, including the Cataclysm activity for players.
Alongside a new mission, the Cataclysm is the biggest addition in this update. BioWare describes the activity as a mode that evolves over time and emphasizes teamwork. Players can work together through various modifiers to earn seasonal currency and climb the leaderboards.
Players who experienced the Cataclysm on test servers were not particularly positive. It seems the activity tasks players with flying around the open world, completing objectives that every Anthem player is already familiar with, and then defeating a final boss.
Cataclysms were originally supposed to drop much earlier in Anthem’s life, as part of the game’s first 90 days (called Act 1). The studio revealed a delay in April that pushed the Cataclysm out of its intended May window.
In addition to the content updates, BioWare also re-balanced several in-game features.
The Luck stat is completely gone, replaced with Bonus Armor. All drops in the game, up to Grandmaster 1, now function as if the player had maximum luck. Difficulties beyond that have much higher luck chance than previously possible.
Update 1.3.0 adds some new weapons for players to use in the Cataclysms and around the world. The new weapons are the Pulse Accelerators, Volt Casters, and Blade Slingers. Each of these new weapon types also come with Masterwork variants. All Javelins also have a few new Masterwork weapons for existing gear pieces.
The studio added a new gear slot for melee weapons. This allows players to customize what kind of melee damage they do, and allows them to build in more melee centric directions. Support items also have Masterwork variants now.
BioWare reduced the amount of health and shields for most non-boss enemies, as well as further re-balanced some numbers for all enemies.
Anthem Update 1.3.0 is live now for all players.

Seven months after launch, Anthem dumped in EA Access

Not a good sign for a game with tentpole expectations

Anthem, Electronic Arts’ beleaguered open-world action RPG, is now available to EA Access and Origin Access subscribers, just seven months after a thudding launch.
The version available through EA Access and Origin Access’ “vault” of titles is the Standard Edition, although those who subscribe to the PC-only Origin Access Premier tier of service will get the Legion of Dawn edition, which delivers extra armor for each class of Javelin (the mechanical battle suit that player characters wear).

The game is available now in Access’ all three platforms —
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, andWindows PC. Previously it had been part of the “Play First” trials offered to subscribers, which allowed a 10-hour preview of the full game.

The next Play First trial coming to the service is FIFA 20on Sept. 19 for all platforms, although Premier subscribers on PC get the whole game, untimed, on the same day.
Anthem got a significant title update on Sept. 4 (version 1.4.0), following one at the beginning of August that added the Cataclysm end-game activity originally promised for the spring. Though Electronic Arts and BioWare have pledged continued support and say they have ongoing plans for the future of this new franchise, the game has been a critical disappointment and a glaring underperformer in terms of revenue.
Other games coming to EA Access today:

      • Out of the Park Baseball 20 (basic edition)
      • The Escapists 2
      • Ultimate Chicken Horse
      • Vambrace: Cold Soul
      • Yooka-Laylee

Report: BioWare doubling down on Anthem, might bring it back as ‘Anthem 2.0’

Rumors of the loot shooter’s demise are premature, developers say

BioWare is working to overhaul and redeploy Anthempotentially as an all-new product on shelves — according to a Kotaku report quoting anonymous sources at the studio. EA itself declined to comment on the story.
The salvage operation hints at the present state of the multiplayer loot-shooter, which has seen big-name project managers depart recently, and was dumped into the EA Access catalogseven months after its February launch.
Still, “Anthem 2.0,” or “Anthem Next,” as it is reportedly being informally referred to, will deliver a “drastically” changed game, involving the mission structure, loot and world itself, according to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier.
Anthem launched in almost complete dysfunction, with performance problems and a bland design that failed to deliver on the game’s marketing hype. Kotaku also detailed the manifold problems in Anthem’s conception and development back in April, which drew a very defensive reply from BioWare and Electronic Arts.
Not soon after, BioWare began backtracking on an ambitious 90-day roadmap of post-launch support that developers had drawn up. That delayed, by three months, the release of Cataclysm, end-game content that is a staple of the open-world, massively multiplayer loot shooters that Anthem was meant to compete with. Cataclysm finally arrived in August, butfailed to energize the game’s remaining player base.
Kotaku’s report cautions that “many of the details are still in flux, and there’s no clear timeline” for Anthem’s makeover, whatever it entails. Developers are considering a series of updates similar to what was seen with No Man’s Sky, which struggled during its launch in 2016, but recovered in 2018 with a comprehensive update called No Man’s Sky Next.
BioWare could also release “Anthem 2.0” as an entirely new game, Kotaku reported, though it’s unlikely that original Anthem owners would be forced to purchase the game again.
Still “It’s safe to say that Anthem won’t suddenly transform into a brand-new franchise,” Kotaku says. “BioWare’s plan is to zoom out and overhaul the gameplay systems that most have agreed don’t work.”
Kotaku, of course, has a lot more detail; you should check it out.

      BioWare is officially redesigning Anthem

The game’s seasons will be put on hold so the developer can work on the larger update

      Image

Bioware’s Anthem has had a rough time post-launch.
Players criticized the game’s lack of content, and poor loot progression system, and the lack of certain endgame content available for the launch of the game only made things worse. But, after a year of updates for the game, BioWare has announced that it is slowing down production on Anthem in order to redesign the game.
The team is going to work to “reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges, and progression with meaningful rewards,” according to the official blog post. The team will also work to preserve the game’s flying and combat mechanics, which many players enjoyed.

Anthem will also be online in its current state until the design is ready for launch. BioWare will continue to run in-game events, refresh the store, and will occasionally revisit past seasonal and cataclysm content so the remaining Anthem players will have something to do while they wait for the new version of the game.
This announcement of the new redesign for Anthem comes a few months after reports from Kotaku stated that the studio was still committed to the game, despite its early shortcomings and struggles. The idea of an Anthem 2.0, as mentioned in those reports, sounds similar to what Bioware is describing here.
BioWare’s post doesn’t give a clear indication of when this Anthem redesign is set to come out, however it does mention that the project will likely take “months.” On top of that, the post says that one of the goals of the redesign is to do “something we’d like to have done more the first time around — giving a focused team the time to test and iterate, focusing on the gameplay first.”
