Splatoon 2’s last content update comes in December

How do you do, fellow squids?

he release date comes from the company’s most recent Nintendo Direct presentation. Alongside the date announcement, Nintendo showed off some new gameplay from the multiplayer shooter.
A new mode revealed during the Direct is called Salmon Run, and it’s basically Splatoon 2’s version of a horde mode. The PvE mode pits a team of Inklings against some very disturbing salmon monsters as they try to collect new items called Power Eggs.
Splatoon 2 will also receive a new series of amiibo. There are three new figures heading to stores: a new color of Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy and a Squid. After syncing these amiibo into the game, they’ll become your friend, remembering custom outfits, weapons, gears and options.
NintendoWe already got to play some Splatoon 2last month as part of a global stress test. New weapons promise some innovation on the game’s unique formula, but overall, Splatoon 2 seems a lot like good ol’ Splatoon — and that’s not a bad thing.

Splatoon 2’s single-player mode revealed in new trailer

Hero Mode returns and brings a familiar face with it

A new trailer tacked onto the end of today’s Nintendo Direct shows off Splatoon 2’s single-player mode. Alongside some more hints at the game’s surprisingly deep storyline, it offers a tour through the sequel’s glossy sights.

What we’re treated to in the trailer are some looks at the various stages kids and squids will ink their way through over the course of Hero Mode’s missions. They’re a bit reminiscent of the areas from Splatoon on Wii U — which is nothing to complain about. Yet these stages also appear to take place in more diverse locations and feature some different faces than those in the previous game. Check out the gallery below for a taste of what’s in store.
Before that, though, is a cutscene that reintroduces one of the game’s central figures. We’re most excited to see how the return of Marie, the Squid Sister whose dramatic breakup with fellow idol Callie has fueled much of Splatoon 2’s intrigue thus far, plays into the game’s plot.
Nintendo’s released several chapters of a prologue that explains how the pair parted ways following Splatoon’s final online event. This trailer doesn’t close the book on the story just yet, so we’ll have to wait until July 21 to find out what this all means for the future of Inkopolis’ most beloved musical duo.

Splatoon 2’s best mode has a frustrating quirk

Some are playing the new horde-style mode and nothing else

Splatoon 2 is a worthy follow-up to one of the Wii U’s flashiest games, according to reviewers. What really makes it worth the dip is its co-op mode, Salmon Run, which has already won over so many fans that it’s become a trending topic on Twitter ... even though Nintendo doesn’t want us to play too much of it.
If you’ve seen us play Salmon Run live on YouTube — the archive’s below, if you missed it — you have a sense of how this mode works. Up to four players work together to take down three waves of enemies, each of whom have unique weak spots and drop golden eggs in their wake. Hitting the egg quota before time runs out moves you onto the next wave.
It’s intense, it’s ridiculous and it’s great team-bonding. We’ve been excited about people getting into Salmon Run since before the game launched, and now that it’s here, people are singing its praises.

It even became a big trending topic in Japan when Splatoon 2 launched last Friday.

In Japan, it's not #Splatoon2 that's trending on release day, but its co-op mode #SalmonRun.

The only problem? Salmon Run is only playable online on a schedule, putting some severe limits on what many think is Splatoon 2’s most fun addition.

When Nintendo revealed how Salmon Run’s online portion worked, players were both confused and preemptively annoyed. We’ve asked Nintendo as to why Salmon Run works like this online, but consider that other games have similar rotating live events. It’s just a shame that Salmon Run is so, so fun — the kind of fun that we want to check out as much as possible.
Luckily, Salmon Run is rad in local multiplayer too, if you have pals around. There’s also Turf War to play online whenever ... but that horde mode is a special kind of novelty that won’t wear off for a while.

Splatoon 2 update coming this week raises level cap, adds stages

Two stages from the original will return to Splatoon 2

Splatoon 2 is getting a significant update on Thursday, Nov. 23 that will eventually add five new stages, new gear and a raise in the level cap, plus additional amiibo functionality and more.
The update is free. The newest battle stage, called MakoMart, will join the game on Nov. 24. Three more — Shellendorf Institute, plus the return of Walleye Warehouse and Arowana Mall from the original Splatoonwill arrive soon.
The Salmon Run mode will add the Salmonid Smokeyard stage to the rotation. “In Salmonid Smokeyard, a wide gap on the beach divides two upper platforms, with fan lifts being the quickest way to traverse the two platforms,” Nintendo said. “Teamwork is required to use the fan lifts effectively.”

How will Splatoon 2 be affected by Nintendo Switch Online?

The multiplayer-based game could be the most affected by the subscription service, but its producer isn’t worried

Despite the recent release of its first paid, single-player expansion, Octo, Splatoon 2remains a multiplayer-first game for most of its community. Nintendo Switch’s online capabilities were free when the game launched, which helped support and expand the player base — and continues to do so. With the premium subscription service Nintendo Switch Online on the way, however, should players be concerned about a shrinking multiplayer field or, worse, a greater divide between experienced Squid Kids willing to pony up and tentative newcomers testing the waters?
Producer Hisashi Nogami doesn’t think so, he told Polygon. But he does anticipate some changes to how people approach the game once the Nintendo Switch Online barrier goes up this fall.
“We don’t think it will have no influence,” Nogami said. “We imagine it will have some sort of influence or effect by the addition of Nintendo Switch Online. [But] we want to use Nintendo Switch Online’s addition as a way to redouble our commitment to the community and reaffirm for them that we’re going to support this game more and more.”

What that will probably look like is a continued, consistent flow of updates to the multiplayer modes. Those include weapons, costumes and stages, and roll out to all players at no cost. (Splatoon’s priorities in both multiplayer and free content is what makes the $19.99 OctoExpansion particularly surprising. Nogami says the team has no current plans for more single-player, premium releases, however.)
The promise of new things to play with in Splatoon 2 will hopefully sway anyone put off by the upcoming, $20-a-year requirement to keep playing the modes they had already been playing for a year. Nintendo Switch Online will, in effect, change Splatoon 2 from costing a one-time fee of $59.99 to $59.99 plus an annual subscription fee for however long you want to keep splatting opponents with your Inklings.
For Nogami, the pending Nintendo Switch Online fees only encourage the team to double down on providing a fair experience for all online players.
“It’s not to say that there’s no possibility that we’ll ever consider releasing some paid premium multiplayer content,” he explained, which would add another barrier of entry to Splatoon fans. “The main thing we want to maintain is this even playing field for players.”

Splatoon 2’s last content update comes in December

Eight new weapons, two more abilities coming in 4.3.0

Splatoon 2’s last content update is coming Dec. 5; after that, it will just be balancing and map tweaks and other minor adjustments for post-release support. A Splatoon fan account on Twitter picked apart all of the details and shared what’s coming earlier today.
Update 4.3.0 will be the last one to include new weapons. This one will deliver five, four of which are known — the Ballpoint Splatling Nouveau, Nautilus 79, Custom Explosher and Bloblobber Deco. Whatever it is that’s coming from the Kensa Collection isn’t known or named yet.

Two other abilities will be added: Bomb Defense Up DX, which combines the existing abilities Cold Blooded and Bomb Defense Up and Main Power Up. Main Power Up is weapon dependent; for example, with it equipped, the Aerospray MG increases its ink coverage area, and the Splat Roller increases its damage.

Splatoon 2 fans can still expect more Splatfests and ongoing post-release support until next year; this just marks the end of new in-game content. Splatoon 2 launched July 21, 2017; the first Splatoon, on Wii U,saw free content updates for about six months, with the game’s final Splatfest taking place about a year after its May 2015 launch.
