Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update adds Link from Breath of the Wild

      New characters and modes

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is coming to the Nintendo Switch on April 28, the company announced today.
All of the tracks and characters from the Wii U version of the game will be available on the Switch port, plus all DLC content and characters. New characters will also be available to play in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, according to a press release, including Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy from Splatoon, as well as King Boo, Dry Bones and Bowser Jr. The game will allow for up to eight players in local wireless multiplayer.
New modes, including Balloon Battle and Bob-omb Blast, will be available to play in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, along with new courses like Urchin Underpass and Battle Stadium. As previously reported, players can now carry two items at a time, both a primary and a secondary. Items from older games, including Boo (the item-stealing ghost) and the Feather, which gives players a high jump in Battle mode, will also make a return in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Nintendo will also introduce a Smart Steering feature, which will keep players on the track and make gameplay easier for more novice players. The game can be played in 1080p in TV mode and 720p in portable.

Nintendo revealed the first look at Mario Kart 8 on the Switch in its original announcement video for the console last October. In the video, the “Yoshi Circuit” course from Mario Kart: Double Dash on the GameCube can be seen. That particular course was made available as DLC content for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U in 2014.

Nintendo first announced it would be releasing a successor to its Wii U in March 2015. The system was codenamed “Nintendo NX,” but Nintendo confirmed it was called the Switch this past October. The hybrid console allows for both standard, home console gaming through a TV and portable play. Players will reportedly be able to switch over from the stationary console version to the handheld without losing their place in the game.
Nintendo also confirmed the Switch would use game cartridges, called game cards, but added these would be different from game cartridges used for the 3DS. As a result, players will not be able to use their 3DS cartridges on the Switch.
The Switch will be released on March 3 for $299.

Mario Kart 8 on Switch’s upgrades make it worth picking up again

All the reasons why you’ll wanna double-dip

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the next marquee game heading to the Nintendo Switch. An overview trailer released by Nintendo today shows why owners of the original game on Wii U may want to pick up the kart racer a second time when it hits Switch next month, with a glut of new features and content exclusive to the re-release.
      New characters

There are new playable characters in the Switch version ofMario Kart 8, ranging from more Mario faves to two of the kids (or squids?) from Splatoon. These new characters are Splatoon’s Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy, alongside King Boo, Dry Bones and Bowser Jr. All together, that makes for 42 possible racers total. (As a bonus, the Splatoon characters bring their own custom karts to the game, too. That means there’s at least two more karts to choose from.)
      New Battle mode

The beloved Battle mode gets a major revamp with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with fiver different ways to play adding diversity to the multiplayer feature.
These include the original Renegade Roundup, which has one team trying to put the other in jail in a set amount of time. The match is spent busting renegade racers, who in turn are busting out of jail cells before time’s up.

The rest of Deluxe’s Battle mode, which includes eight courses, is derived from familiar gameplay styles. There’s the classic balloon battle, the Bob-omb Blast mode from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart Wii’s coin-obsessed challenge and the capture the flag-like Shine Thief.
      Returning items

Players can now hold two items at once, a feature that went missing from Mario Kart 8 on Wii U. Also returning are the Boo item, which can be used to rob other racers of the items they’re most attached to, and the Feather, which hasn’t been in the game since the original Super Mario Kart. This item lets players jump high into the air to escape any other racers or threatening items on the ground.
      New ways to play

As we discovered at an event in January, Mario Kart 8 includes some unique — and surprisingly fun! — ways to play on Switch over the Wii U. For one, there’s the Joy-Con steering wheel peripheral, which is a plastic shell for a single Joy-Con controller. Think of it as Mario Kart Wii’s Wii wheel accessory, only ... better. It’s hard to quite articulate why that is; perhaps its the comforting amount of weight and grip it adds to the tiny Joy-Con. All we can say is, we had a blast using it to play the Switch version of Mario Kart 8.

The Switch also lets two friends play together in portable mode without the need of an extra controller, thanks to the console’s included pair of Joy-Con controllers. We’d love to see some Snipperclips-style functionality (and chaos) added to Mario Kart, so this is a Deluxe-exclusive feature to be excited for.
Mario Kart 8 is out April 28, with the separate Joy-Con wheels sold in packs of two for $14.99 the same day. Check out 30 screenshots below for another glimpse at the Switch version.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is Amazon’s best-selling game of 2017 so far

      It’s even above Zelda

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the first major Switch game since the console’s launch, is already the top-selling video game of the year so far on Amazon.
The best-selling gaming products of 2017 aren’t actually games; the top two spots on Amazon’s list are occupied by PlayStation Store gift cards, with $20 at No. 1 and $10 at No. 2. But Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is right behind them in the third slot.
That feat is inherently nothing to sneeze at, but it’s even more impressive with some context. Nintendo just launched Mario Kart 8 Deluxe today, April 28. Amazon updates this particular list daily, so the retailer’s pre-order numbers alone may be entirely responsible for getting the game this high on the list. And the kart racer is doing better than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is officially the Switch’s best-selling game at this point; it outdid the console itself in March, with 2.76 million copies sold worldwide.
Remember also that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a full-price re-release of a Wii U game that’s nearly three years old — the original Mario Kart 8 launched in late May 2014. And a lot of people already own it: Mario Kart 8 is by far the best-selling game in Wii U history, with 8.31 million copies sold as of March 31, 2017. But if Amazon’s sales are any indication, the majority of Switch owners may also end up buying Deluxe.

Check out our preview of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for more on the differences between it and its Wii U predecessor.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe patched with Nintendo Labo support

This is a very fun surprise for owners of both experiences

Nintendo Labo was already a fun toy if you stuck to the software and pieces that came in the package, but Nintendo has increased the value of the Labo Variety Kit by patching Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with support for the motorcycle handlebars Toy-Con.
This means that you can turn your existing Labo construction into a portable, arcade-style controller and play Mario Kart by twisting the throttle, turning the handlebars and leaning into turns. Labo's limited racing game that was included with the package plays in a similar fashion, and full Mario Kart support for the controller is a great surprise.
The software update is available now. This is an efficient way to get people talking about both Labo and Mario Kart 8 again, and maybe some fans who own one but not the other may complete the collection. Judging by the reaction of my kids after watching the video, I have a feeling that playing Mario Kart in the standard way is now a thing of the past in our house.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update adds Link from Breath of the Wild

Nintendo adds new Legend of Zelda content for free

Nintendo released an update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch today that adds a new playable character: Link, wearing the Champion’s Tunic, from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
In addition to Link, the version 1.6.0 patch for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also adds the Master Cycle Zero, the motorcycle that was added to Breath of the Wild in 2017 as part of that game’sChampions’ Ballad downloadable content. Rounding out the new content are a set of new tires, called Ancient Tires, and a new glider, based on Breath of the Wild’s paraglider.
The update also includes unspecified “revisions to improve gameplay,” as well as some unlisted content, according to Nintendo’s support website.
Check out The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Link in action in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the trailer above.
