Jessica Jones Season 3 Officially Ordered by Netflix

As expected, Netflix has ordered Season 3 of Marvel’s surly private investigator series, Jessica Jones. The show has already set up a few potential arcs for Season 3, along with some sneaky MCU shoutouts. (Just don’t expect an actual MCU movie/TV show crossover any time soon.)
Netflix’s exploration of female empowerment and PTSD was a critical hit after Season 1 garnered loads of positive reviews lauding the series for its accurate portrayal of mental illness and sexual assault. Season 2 didn’t quite land on the equal footing. Without a traditional villain, and with a little bit slower pacing, some felt Season 2 lacked direction. Nevertheless, with massive character growth for Jessica’s friends Malcolm and Trish in Season 2, viewers continue to connect to the series in a major way (as showrunner Melissa Rosenberg noted in her interview with Screen Rant earlier this month).

That love from the fans has provided the series with enough steam to prompt a third season order from streaming giant Netflix. The announcement, which comes just a little over a month after the premiere of Season 2, seemed practically inevitable. But with Netflix’s more cutthroat policies and a newfound penchant for canceling shows with little warning, along with the kerfluffle over Disney’s new streaming service, the fate of Netflix’s Marvel series has been under much debate in recent months. The official Jessica Jones twitter account confirmed the season order in a post earlier today. Check out the post below:

There are already a few hints at where the series could end up in Season 3. Trish’s struggles with her powerless identity and yearning to be a hero herself could very well be a sign that Hellcat is on her way. By the end of Season 2, Jessica seems to have shunned all of her closest friends, but she hasn’t quite lost hope yet. She appears to be attempting to move forward her super-boyfriend Oscar. Still, there’s absolutely going to be fallout from Trish’s actions over the course of Season 2, so it’s a certainty Jessica will be pulled back into this world.
Season 2 managed to spread its wings just a little and pulled in some less than subtle references to the MCU; including, a nod to the superhuman prison The Raft, which has implications for where Season 2 falls in the MCU timeline relative to the events of Captain America: Civil War. And, of course, Stan Lee himself put in a brief appearance in Season 2. Again though, there won’t be any MCU movie/TV show crossovers coming any time soon with Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo saying a crossover between the MCU and the Marvel/Netflix series is “practically impossible.”

Jessica Jones Season 3 Is Releasing In June On Netflix

      Netflix confirms the
Jessica Jones season 3 release date will be in early June, though the exact date is not yet known. When Jessica Jones season 1premiered in 2015, it was the second series to debut as part of Marvel TV and Netflix's deal for a whole mini-universe of Marvel Cinematic Universe programming. The first was Daredevil, then Jessica Jones was followed by two other solo series - Luke Cage and Iron Fist - before the four heroesteamed up for The Defenders. The Punisher also joined the universe as a spinoff from Daredevil. However, now Jessica Jones season 3 is the last remnant of Marvel and Netflix's once-successful partnership.

      Starting with the
cancellation of Iron Fist, Netflix eventually axed all of its live-action Marvel TV shows, effectively ending the streaming company's deal with Marvel. After Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil were officially cancelled, shocking fans of the respective series since their most recent seasons were well received. Then, Netflix cancelled The Punisher and Jessica Jones in one fell swoop, though the streamer promised to air the already completed Jessica Jones season 3. Now after The Punisher season 2 debuted in January, Netflix is gearing up to debut Jessica Jones season 3, with a June release window now confirmed.

Netflix released a new video previewing what's new on the streaming service in the first half of June 2019 and though it doesn't reveal the exact
release date for Jessica Jones season 3, a short clip of Krysten Ritter as the titular character confirms the show will return next month. Netflix did something similar for The Punisher season 2 release, teasing its window before later revealing the exact premiere date. See the Netflix video below, the Jessica Jones segment begins at 3:35.

Since this video covers the first half of June, it's most likely Jessica Jonesseason 3 will premiere either Friday June 7 or Friday June 15, with the latter being more likely (if it were the former, we'd probably have a trailer already). Of course, Netflix has been gradually moving away from only releasing content on Fridays, so if the streaming service has decided to debut the final Jessica Jones season on a day of the week other than Friday, there's no telling when its release date could be. Still, thanks to this video we know
Jessica Jonesseason 3 will release sometime between June 1-15, which means Netflix will be ramping up marketing and fans can expect a trailer soon enough.

As for what fans can expect from
Jessica Jones season 3, it's possible the show will give its titular private eye a more concrete ending than her fellow NYC-based Marvel superheroes. Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist all ended on cliffhangers because the showrunners didn't know the series were ending. While Jessica Jones was cancelled after the show had wrapped filming, it's possible the series had always planned a satisfying ending due to showrunnerMelissa Rosenberg leaving after season 3. Whatever the case, Jessica Jonesfans will get to see how her story on Netflix ends when the season premieres early next month.
