Bill & Ted 3 Gets An Official Summer 2020 Release Date

The 1989 time travel comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure made Keanu Reeves a star and cemented the cry of “Excellent!” as a ’90s pop culture staple. Talk of a third installment in the franchise, still known only as Bill & Ted 3,has persisted for years, with the original’s co-star Alex Winters most recently speaking about the film’s story, which would catch up with Bill and Ted in their forties.

Keanu Reeves is currently doing the press rounds for his upcoming hit man action-thriller, John Wick, and spoke with ComingSoon.net about several projects he has coming up, touched on the subject of Doctor Strange (more on that subject here) and went into detail about the current draft of Bill & Ted 3.

Screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon wrote the original film and its 1991 sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and have returned to write the third film. When asked if the singular style and voice of the writers – particularly Solomon, known for his quirky touch in films like Men in Black - may be part of the reason Bill & Ted 3 has not yet moved into production, Reeves said:

We have to get the script in the right place. Chris and Ed have been working really hard over a couple of years to get the draft in the right place. What is the reason to make this movie besides nostalgia or the love of these characters. Where can they be in their life that can be a story that is worth telling or has something in it and is funny? They have that. It didn’t help that the first script that they brought in was probably budgeted at $150 million dollars. I don’t know if Bill & Ted carry that much weight. Part of the argument is that it’s not that popular internationally, that’s where so much of the funding for movies comes from these days. They’ve worked on the script and the budget, just trying to get the right script and then get the business side wrapped up, financiers and rights, all the show business stuff.

Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot was reportedly attached to helm Bill & Ted 3, but as the years went by and the film still hadn’t been greenlit, the level of Parisot’s continued involvement was unknown. When asked if the director was still attached, Reeves answered in the positive, saying:

Yeah, Dean’s re-read it and I think he likes it. It’s kind of like… I call it “gravity,” you have to get this mass together to make it happen. In terms of the writers’ voices being too peculiar, in this case no. I think they’ve really crafted something that’s funny. [Bill and Ted have] been weighed down by the burden of having to save the world by the song, and they just can’t write it. They’re losing their wives and their children, they’re losing their families.

Reeves elaborated on Bill and Ted’s crisis – being so obsessed with writing the song they’re supposed to be famous for – with more details, stating:

The future comes back and says if you don’t write the song by this certain time the universe is going to unravel and history and everything is going to change and dinosaurs are gonna walk the Earth. Jesus is playing baseball! All sorts of weird things start unraveling and wormholes are twisting. We have to kind of bring order back, and it’s connected into bringing our families together by writing a song.

Reeves responded to the observation that it would be ideal to bring these characters back without them being “homogenized” by saying:

No! I mean, it’s edgy. There’s a great scene where Bill and Ted are in jail and we’re seeing our future [selves] and they’re all tatted and hard. They’re like, [tough sounding] “What’s up, dude? Hey dude. Hey guy.” “Stop calling me dude!” They want to beat up Bill and Ted because they’ve inherited the life that they f**ked up. They’re miserable and they hate Bill and Ted. There’s some funny stuff!

The ever-candid Reeves also lamented the roadblocks preventing forward progress on the acclaimed Black List script Passengers from Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts, citing “all that show business sh*t” as the main reason financial backing has yet to be found. The wait for Bill & Ted 3 is likely due to a commitment for getting the script right.

We’ve pointed out before that the notion of catching up with franchise characters like this in real time is not new (Clerks II, Dumb and Dumber To), but it sounds like the stars and writers are aiming for something deeper and more meaningful than the novelty of watching Reeves revisit his breakthrough role. Addressing the specter of unrealized ambitions could resonate for more than one generation of audiences, and just might make Bill & Ted 3 worth the wait.

Bill & Ted 3 is currently in development.

The man behind the Adventure Time comic is bringing Bill & Ted back to life

The stars of classic cult film franchise Bill & Ted are making a long-awaited return to comic books with the release of a new six-issue series launching March 15, publisher BOOM! Studios confirms.

Bill & Ted's Most Triumphant Return takes place following the events of the second film Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. This upcoming series will be written by Ryan North, best known for his work on the Adventure Time comic series, and Puss in Boots' screenwriter Brian Lynch will write the new comic with Jerry Gaylord and Ian McGinty creating the artwork.

It's been over two decades since the last time these characters appeared in comic book form, with the release of Bill & Ted's Excellent Comic Book, a 12-issue series published by Marvel Comics in 1991 alongside the release of the film.

Bill & Ted 3: Keanu Reeves Says They’re ‘Trying to Get the Story Right’

Since its release back in 1989, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure has become a 1980s classic. The campy adventures of surfer-tongued rocker goofballs Bill S. Preston, Esquire (Alex Winter) and “Ted” Theodore Logan (Keanu Reeves) left an indelible mark on pop culture, spawning a sequel and a short lived cartoon show, as well as launching the careers of its stars. However, after 1991’s Bogus Journey, the excellence went on a long term hiatus.
After a couple of false starts, including a 2012 script (with an attached director) and a 2014 Keanu Reeves-based discussion about an updated version of the characters, Bill & Ted fans were still left in wondering what comes next. Last year, Alex Winter was upbeat about Bill & Ted 3 while promoting his Deep Web documentary, but there hasn’t been much forward momentum since then.
Now, Keanu Reeves returns with a mixed bag update about the possibility of a totally excellent reunion. Speaking with IGN, he admits that the long-awaited sequel was still somewhat in a holding pattern. However he was hopeful, explaining that the script was moving forward, with studio involvement, but Bill & Ted 3 wouldn’t come to fruition until everything felt right with the script. Reeves explains:

Keanu Reeves Shares Bill & Ted 3 Story Pitch

While it can sometimes be a bit hard to remember after spending so much time in a post-Matrix world, there was a time when Keanu Reeves most iconic role was easily that of time-traveling metal-head Ted “Theodore” Logan in the 1989 cult classic Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Despite – or perhaps even because of – the abject silliness involved in Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted’s titular journey through time, the movie carried with it a party-like atmosphere that has helped it continue to pick up new fans in the decades since its release.
Earning over $40 million at the box office on an estimated budget of only $10 million, Bill & Ted naturally returned two years later for an even crazier sequel, entitled Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. While neither as beloved or as profitable as the original, Bogus Journey has gone on to earn its own – albeit smaller – cult of followers, a group that revels in odd sequences like the titular duo playing Twister with the Grim Reaper after being murdered by evil robot versions of themselves. (Yes, it’s that kind of movie.)

In the years since Bogus Journey, star Reeves has publicly teased the creation of a potential third installment multiple times, only to see things halt at the idea stage. While it remains to be seen whether Bill & Ted 3 will ever actually happen, Reeves once again discussed the prospect during a recent talk show appearance on BBC-One’s The Graham Norton Show (via The Wrap), offering up his story pitch for the film.
“There’s a cool story. Basically, they’re supposed to write a song to save the world and they haven’t done that yet. So the pressure of having to save the world — their marriages are falling apart, their kids are kind of mad at them. But then someone comes from the future and tells them if they don’t write the song it’s just not the world, it’s the universe. So they have to save the universe because time is breaking apart. So then elements of the past come in.”

In Reeves’ proposed Bill & Ted 3, it would seem that while God gave rock and roll to everyone, he didn’t necessarily equip Bill and Ted with the tools required to craft a song capable of saving humanity. It’s really not surprising that they would be struggling. After all, they were just two underachieving teenagers before Rufus arrived to thrust them into an intergalactic fight for the future.
With the knowledge of what they were eventually meant to do constantly weighing on their minds, it’s likely that Bill and Ted have never really been able to have a normal family life, considering that their wives are from the 1400s. Still, one hopes the Wyld Stallyns will eventually get it together, in truly excellent fashion.

Bill & Ted 3 is Officially Happening

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are officially returning to play the world’s most righteous rock n’ roll time travelers in Bill & Ted 3. Before Wayne and Garth or Bevis and Butthead, there was Bill and Ted. 1989’s Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure introduced the rocking doofus pair in a sci-fi comedy involving time travel via phone booth, the kidnapping of famous figures for the purpose of passing history class, George Carlin as a future man and lots of air guitar.
For the 1991 sequel Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, the time travel shenanigans of Excellent Adventure gave way to a story about Bill and Ted traveling to hell, outwitting Death and making him their ally and returning to earth to defeat their own android doubles. In the years since Bogus Journey seemingly wrapped up the saga of Bill and Ted, rumors have sprung up about a possible third film. Recently, those rumors became more concrete, with talk of Bill and Ted 3 solidly coming together.

Now, there is official news to report about the future of Bill and Ted. BLOOM announces that at long last, the movie will go forward under the title Bill and Ted Face the Music, with Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves returning in the leads. The movie is currently in pre-production, with a script by original creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon and Galaxy Quest‘s Dean Parisot confirmed as director (he has been attached to the project since 2012). Reeves and Winter said in a statement:
“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm we’ve got a dream team!”

Confirming plot hints teased in a 2017 interview with Keanu Reeves, the new movie sees Bill and Ted in middle-age living lives nothing like what was promised after they supposedly launched themselves on a path to rock stardom in the original films. The pair has written thousands of songs by this point, but none of them is the promised tune that would save humanity. Now thanks to their musical futility, the space-time continuum is tearing around them. Bill and Ted have no choice but to embark on another excellent time travel adventure, accompanied by their daughters, more historical figures and several musical legends. Their goal? To find the greatest song ever written and restore order to the universe.
Though never huge box office hits, the original Bill and Ted movies achieved a special place in pop culture thanks to their silly comedy, charmingly goofy lead performances and memorably wacky plots. Recapturing that particular magic will be tough, but going by the description, Bill and Ted 3 at least has the wacky plot part down pat. Also promising is the presence of Dean Parisot, whose Galaxy Quest has a zany-yet-earnest spirit very similar to the Bill and Ted movies. In another positive development, William Sadler’s Death reportedly shows up in the new script and will be included in the movie.
We will provide updates as Bill and Ted 3 heads from pre-production into actual shooting.

Bill & Ted 3 Gets An Official Summer 2020 Release Date

Orion Pictures has set an official Summer 2020 release date for Bill & Ted Face the Music, aka. Bill & Ted 3. It's been thirty years now since Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure hit theaters, in the process introducing Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as the loveably dim-witted teenaged musicians turned time-travelers Bill and Ted. While a sequel titled Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey was released just two years later, it's taken several decades for a third installment to get off the ground, due to factors ranging from a lack of funding to its stars' busy schedules (especially Reeves).
However, during all that time, Winter and Reeves have never wavered in their fondness for the Bill & Ted movies, nor their desire to bring the characters back for a third go-round. The project finally got a green-light last year, with the actors returning and Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) directing from a script by original Bill & Ted screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. Now, with filming slated to get underway in New Orleans this summer, the film has gotten an official launch date to boot.

Orion has revealed that Bill & Ted Face the Music will reach theaters next year on August 21, 2020. Winter and Reeves themselves announced the news in a video, where the pair thank their fans for their longstanding support in making the threequel a reality. You can check the clip out, below.

According to the film's synopsis, Bill & Ted Face the Music will pick up with Bill and Ted as middled-aged men who have yet to fulfill their destiny: creating the song that will give rise to a utopia, hundreds of years into the future. Needless to say, the concept of the Wyld Stallyns as forty or fifty-something slackers is inherently funny on its own and part of the reason why fans have never given up on hoping that the movie would become a reality. The threequel's creatives have always affirmed their desire to do right by the Bill and Ted characters too, and spent (literally) years writing and refining the script on spec. So, hopefully, the final result will prove to be worth all the effort they've poured into making it happen.

As for Bill & Ted Face the Music's release date: it puts the film in a decent position to perform well at the box office. Mid to late August is traditionally less competitive than the rest of the summer movie season, which should give the sequel more room to breathe and thrive commercially. It's the only film slated to arrive that day right now; but, even when that changes, Bill & Ted shouldn't end up having to do battle with any major tentpole releases. And with
Coming to America 2 being scheduled to arrive two weeks earlier, August 2020 will be an unexpectedly busy month for belated comedy sequels in general, it seems.

Bill & Ted 3 Adds Kristen Schaal, Holland Taylor

      The cast of
Bill & Ted Face the Musiccontinues to grow, with both Kristen Schaal and Holland Taylor signing on. The titular pair, played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves - and known collectively as the rock band Wyld Stallyns - first debuted in 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. On the verge of failing high school, they were aided by a man from the future named Rufus (George Carlin) who reveals that they were destined to write the music upon which a peaceful, utopian world would one day be formed. Gifted with a time-traveling phone booth, Bill and Ted journey through history in order to guarantee they pass their final test and ensure they weren't separated. The film was a surprise hit, prompting the 1991 sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

A third installment has been a cult film fan's pipe dream for many of the years that followed. Despite occasional signs of hope from the film's stars, the prospect of continued Bill & Ted adventures - outside of the animated series - seemed destined to remain in limbo. An announcement in March, however, revealed
an official release date for the film. And, if that wasn't proof enough for fans of the films, the new installment officially began filming at the end of June. Original Bill & Ted screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon returned to write the script, and Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) has been confirmed to direct.

According to EW, Schaal and Taylor have officially joined the cast and will play key roles in the sequel. Taylor (the upcoming To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You) will play The Great Leader, who is described as "the most powerful person in the universe - the center of which is San Dimas, Calif., 700 years in the future." Schaal (Toy Story 4), meanwhile, will play Kelly, a messenger from the future, likely serving a similar function to Carlin's Rufus in the original installments.

The two actresses won't be the only new faces on the cast. The film recently cast Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving as the duo's grown-up daughters, Billie and Thea, respectively, and Barry's Anthony Carrigan was also recently confirmed to be playing the main antagonist. Jillian Bell, meanwhile, will play the families' therapist; and alongside Reeves and Winter, the third outing will also see the return of William Sadler as Death, as well as Hal Landon Jr. and Amy Stoch as Ted’s father (police chief Chet Logan) and both character's one-time stepmom, Missy, respectively.

Little is known regarding the adventure the iconic pair (and their new families) will find themselves on. With the world starting to unravel, however, and on the verge of collapse, it will be up to them to finally live up to their long prophesied destiny. It also remains to be seen how large of a role both Schaal and Taylor play in the film. Whatever the case, Schaal has proven her comedic abilities time and time again, in both animation and live-action outings, including
Bob's Burgers. Equally, Taylor has numerous acclaimed performances to her name and is no slouch in the comedic department, appearing in such classics as The Truman Showand Legally Blonde. As such, the already stellar cast just grew even more and will surely have fans even more excited to see Bill & Ted Face the Music finally hit theaters.
