      ‘Arrow’ Season 3 Adds Katana

As San Diego Comic-Con approaches — as well as the premiere dates for The CW’s two superhero shows, Arrow and The Flash — more news about both series has been revealed. Though the pilot of The Flash will debut at SDCC, little is known about Arrow season 3. A few weeks ago, Arrow began casting four new characters for the show’s upcoming third season: two to join Oliver Queen in modern-day Starling City, and two who would play a major part in the season’s flashback story arc.

The two characters in the past who will join Oliver in Hong Kong were tentatively named Toshi and Akiko. The new location for the show’s ongoing flashback story and comments from Arrow’s stunt coordinator, JJ Makaro, on the action scenes of season 3, hinted toward a possible samurai character joining the series.

Now that the characters of “Toshi” and “Akiko” have been cast and their official character names have been released, who they are and how they will fit into Oliver’s story in season 3 is much clearer.

Deadline reported Devon Aoki (Sin City) has joined Arrow as Tatsu Yamashiro; TVLine reported Karl Yune (Real Steel) has been cast as Maseo Yamashiro, Tatsu’s husband. According to TVLine, Maseo will act as Oliver’s handler in Hong Kong, but will grow to become a friend and teacher. Both Maseo and Tatsu are skilled in martial arts, while Tatsu also excels with a katana sword; they will help Oliver grow to become the superhero who now protects Starling City.

Fans of the comics may recognize Tatsu by her codename: Katana, named for the weapon she wields. For those who are familiar with her origin story in the books, it’s unclear whether that will play into the third season of Arrow - though it’s certainly possible. At the very least it seems fans will be treated to a glimpse of Katana in the show, if not a full-blown incorporation of the samurai superheroine.

‘Arrow’ Adds Peter Stormare as Vertigo

Peter Stormare as John Abruzzi in ‘Prison Break’

For now, its best to focus on season 3 of Arrow, which will see Oliver Queen of the past move on from the island that kept him prisoner for two seasons to his life in Hong Kong. Two new actors have already been cast for these flashbacks, but little has been revealed so far about the Arrow’s troubles in the present.

According to TVGuide, the season premiere will feature a new take on the Green Arrow villain Count Vertigo, only this time he’ll be played by Peter Stormare of Prison Break fame. Stormare will take on DC Comics’ New 52 version of the character, also known as Werner Zytle, who is introduced as the new distributor of the drug Vertigo.

Arrow viewers will recall that Seth Gabel played “The Count” in the first two seasons, and was previously assumed to be the show’s version of Count Vertigo. Stormare’s character will instead go by the name “Vertigo.”

Screen Rant readers, were you hoping Arrow would appear in Batman v. Superman? What do you think about the series bringing in a new Count Vertigo?

Arrow season 3 premieres on Wednesday, October 8th @8pm on The CW.

Former Superman Brandon Routh Joins Arrow as The Atom

      Routh returns to DC.

He may have only been able to play Superman once, but Brandon Routh is coming back to the DC Universe in an unexpected way. The Superman Returns star will be joining Arrow in Season 3, playing the recurring role of Ray Palmer, AKA The Atom.

TVLine broke the news on Routh’s casting, also revealing how we’ll meet Ray in Season 3 (minor spoilers follow):

An unparalleled scientist and inventor, Ray will play an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver and (rumored love interest) Felicity as the new owner of Queen Consolidated. Palmer’s plans for Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division will be shrouded in mystery.

As TVLine notes, while The Atom has appeared in several DC animated projects, Arrow will mark the first time the size-changing character will be seen in live-action.

This will actually be the fourth comic book-derived project for Routh (who had a recurring role on Enlisted this past season), following Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.

Yeah baby, Brandon Routh is back. I really enjoyed his portrayal of superman much better than that guy from man of steel Henry Cavil. Plus it looks like Arrow is finally going towards superpower stuff.

Arrow Season 3 Premiere Synopsis: New Romance, New Danger

      WARNING: Arrow Season 1 & 2 SPOILERS.

Arrow continues to be a hit for DC Comics, Warner Bros. TV and The CW, paving the way for a whole lot of new superhero TV series, come fall. However, while the freshman heroes try to find their place in the TV pecking order, the godfather of modern super hero TV is coming back for season 3 after an epic season 2 finale left our hero, Oliver Queen/Arrow (Stephen Amell), fully transformed from hooded vigilante into full-blown hero.

We’ve already gotten spoilerish details and casting announcements for Arrow season 3; today we have a synopsis for the season 3 premiere, which carries the ominous title of, “The Calm”.

Posted over on Zap2It (which sources The CW), the synopsis for the Arrow Season 3 premiere reads as follows (MILD SPOILERS):

“In the aftermath of this victory, Season 3 opens with Arrow now a hero to the citizens of Starling. Crime is down, people feel safer, and Captain Lance even calls off the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Basking in his success, Oliver believes he can finally have a private life and asks Felicity out on a date. But the second Oliver takes his eye off the ball, a deadly villain reappears in Starling, forcing Oliver to realize that he can never be Oliver Queen — not as long as the city needs The Arrow.”

Count Vertigo in the ‘Young Justice’ animated series.

We already know who the “deadly villain” is: the Peter Stormare version of Count Vertigo. What’s odd about this supposed synopsis is that it words the appearance of Vertigo as a ‘reappearance,’ instead of “a deadly new villain.”

In the original casting report, Stormare’s character was detailed as being a spin on Werner Zytle, who is the modern version of Count Vertigo featured in DC’s New 52 continuity. In the comics, Zytle is a fallen aristocrat from Eastern Europe who regains power through organized crime – and it sounds like Arrow will be angling for a similar storyline. That makes the wording of the synopsis a bit inaccurate – however, the real question is: will Stormare’s Vertigo finally have his trademark balance-disrupting powers?

      Felicity.

Finally, fans will no doubt zero-in on the supposed romance between Oliver and Felicity featured in the season 3 premiere. Romantic subplots have not always been Arrow‘s strongest point (read: Laurel) – but personally speaking, this one sounds like a tease, rather than a major seasonal plot thread. One of those “Just as they were finally about to kiss…” bait-n-switches, you know?

Arrow season 3 Premieres on Wednesday, October 8th @ 8/7c on The CW.

But first, be sure to catch Stephen Amell introducing the new DC TV Universe at San Diego Comic-Con 2014 on Saturday, July 26th @ 8pm.

‘Arrow’ Season 3: First Look at New Count Vertigo

With the third season premiere of Arrow still more than two months away, the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con last night debuted the first trailer for the upcoming season as well as more details about the crossovers planned with Arrow’s spinoff, The Flash. The CW’s original superhero series has generated a lot of buzz for season 3 by casting plenty of new characters who are well known from the DC comics: Katana, The Atom, and a new version of Count Vertigo.

Now that the trailer has debuted, we have our first look at some of these new characters. While Katana (both as Tatsu Yamashiro and her superhero self) and The Atom were absent from the video, Palmer and Count Vertigo (Peter Stormare) did make an appearance.

In the trailer, a brief clip of Count Vertigo is shown, getting a quip in at the Arrow’s expense: “Some things never die, you for example.” When the new version of Count Vertigo was announced, the casting description listed him as a spin on Werner Zytle (the most recent incarnation) from DC’s New 52 relaunch.

Whether Stormare’s character will share a name with Zytle remains to be seen, but he will certainly share some back story; Zytle is from a fallen aristocratic family in an Eastern European country and regained power through organized crime. We previously wondered if this new version of Count Vertigo on Arrow would finally have his comic book character’s Vertigo effect powers (altering balance and inducing dizziness in his opponents).

Though many fans of Arrow and the DC comics are certainly hoping for a full-fledged Count Vertigo, it seems unlikely due to the nature of The CW’s superhero series so far. As Greg Berlanti, producer on both shows, said, Arrow is set in a world of crime while The Flash in a world of science fiction. Aside from the physical and mind altering substances featured on Arrow, the show rarely — if ever — deals with superhuman powers.

So how will this new Count Vertigo be characterized on Arrow? While the first incarnation was an ostentatious drug dealer, it seems Stormare is playing up the organized crime background established by Zytle (especially in terms of accent and wardrobe). Whether Stormare’s character will receive any modifications not shown in the trailer that will give him his trademark abilities, remains to be seen. In terms of introducing those powers to the world of Arrow, that seems the most likely route.

Arrow season 3 premieres on Wednesday, October 8th @ 8/7c on The CW.
