Everybody loves to eat. But how many of you love to cook and are proud of it? The world's best chefs are men anyway :duke:

So I was wondering what to cook for the family today; Sunday being a weekend and all. Decided to challenge my baking skills and picked Apfelstrudel (or Apple Strudel as it is known in English). It is a layered pastry filled with apples and raisins having origins in present-day Austria.

The most challenging part is making the pastry. Legend has it that it is supposed to be so thin one should be able to read a newspaper through it. I never got that far but stretched it enough without breaking the dough.

Added a touch of cinnamon and some sugar to the apple, rolled the dough into a caterpillar and set it to bake for 30 minutes till the pastry was golden-brown. Prepare your taste buds! and don't jealous

Mmmm......... the aroma of baked apple! I would suggest powered sugar and whipped cream to go alongside a slice of Apple Strudel.

living in Germany for nearly past 3 years now has forcefully made me a cook....actually, if I am completely honest, I can cook or bake almost anything by now.

Gordon Ramsey ftw

I can only cook Eggs (Scrambled, Fry, Omelette), Tea, and fry already-made stuff and create burgers/sausages/sandwiches from them. :p

I can make a nasty English breakfast, with scrambled eggs, having butter and cheese, sausages, meat loaf and bacon. Though ran out of bacon a long time ago and still months before I'll get it again, I use turkey meat strips or if all else fails, chicken. Along with it fresh juice or English tea, slightly buttered toasts, with a side of mushrooms, beans and a little cottage cheese lightly fried on the pan.

And that's the extent of my cooking skills.

Yes everybody, it was delicious. Pie dishes are usually dry so it's essential to have an add-on to moisten it. Cream is good while syrups can also be used.

That's nothing to be ashamed about. You're better than most girls out there. I swear 'khana daari' amongst the new generation of women folk is at an all-time low nowadays.

I like cooking but i am too lazy to go to some big store for buying the required ingredients. However, i have made breakfast a lot of times and things ive cooked so far includes: frying an egg, omelette (with onions and a lot of spices), roasting bread, preparing tea, sandwiches and frying/boiling pre-cooked products. p.s. its fun to load up a mainstream dish with K&N's products and the end result also turn out to be yummy.

Can me has recipe?
Pancakes are the easiest dish to make. Takes barely 10 minutes from mixing ingredients to readying it. Just follow any recipe on the internet and you're good to go.

Find authentic maple syrup to go with it if you can. Pancake syrup is no good, full of corn syrup and artificial maple flavouring.

@Muaaz (http://www.pakgamers.com/forums/member.php?u=68) You should buy a Steak grill pan. It gives the steak those characteristic grill lines. Yours still looks absolutely delicious though. Good job with those potato wedges on the side :D

By the way, what do you marinate the meat with? Vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, soy sauce, yogurt?

Muaaz
01-09-15, 09:07 PM
Ottoman - Yeah I have been considering getting a grill pan for a while. Had one back in Pakistan. As for the recipe, it's extremely simple.

Marination: None. Yep, that's right.

Recipe: I pre-eat the pan and brush it with a chunk of butter so that it evenly spreads. The temperature of the steak that you plan to cook is important; the closer to room temperature, the better. Before dropping the steak into the pan I sprinkle salt and pepper and rub some olive oil and try to flip only once when its cooking. I like my steak medium-rare and juicy so I avoid poking it when it cooks as it drains the juices. At the same time, I toss some chopped capsicum, onions, green onions and thinly sliced tomatoes and sautee them.

Ideally you want to use an undercut piece. There are two long strips of undercut in a cow and most of the local butchery will have no idea about this. You may want to check out Zenith in Lahore, they know it well and that's why they run out pretty quickly.

It's just cooking man, don't get discouraged. I mean, ultimately you're just having fun because you don't have to cook for others all the time.

I used salt, pepper and garlic powder in moderate quantities. The most important thing is the quality of the meat you use, and the fat content. An ideal meat/fat ratio is 80:20.

As for the sauce, I used fresh cream cheese (cuz I didn't have mayonaisse), Asian sweet n' sour sauce (similar to Chicken Tempura sauce you get with K&N Tempura), and capsicum/chilli sauce.

Yeah, I'm guessing it was the meat. Had been kept in the freezer for quite some time to the point where it started oxidizing and got a little brown-ish.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take another crack at it.

04-09-15, 04:19 PM
Always use fresh meat dude, that's the core of a good, juicy burger. Avoid putting it in the freezer after purchasing otherwise you'll have trouble crafting the patties. Store in the refrigerator after purchasing, and use it within 2 days.

Also, don't overcook it and don't poke or press it with the tong or whatever handler you use while it cooks otherwise you'll drain out the juices.

Pleasant I did it man. Made everything myself including tartar sauce and fries. It tasted so damn good that I couldn't believe I made something this delicious. This was hands down the best fish n' chips I have ever tasted, no exaggeration.

The fish was super crispy and most importantly, completely odorless. On the inside, it was very "khili khili" instead of soggy because I dried it completely before battering it.

The tartar sauce was epic. I used mayonnaise, chopped pickled cucumber, minced parsley, lemon and pepper.

The fries were also very crispy and golden brown. I made them in two shifts, lightly fried them first and then let them rest and then fried them at high heat to get the crispy perfection. Topped them off with salt and garlic powder.

Finger lickin' good (y)

Lovely stuff. I see you didn't peel off the potato skins. Chips taste best that way.

True man, and the two-phase frying process ensures they come out crispy. They tasted much more fresh and natural compared to boxed fries that I used before. I don't see myself going back to dabbay walay fries after this.

Made 'Hackbällchen Toscana' yesterday. Translation is Meatballs with Toscana Sauce.

Seasoned meatballs with salt n pepper and put them on a baking dish. Put slices on mozarella cheese on top of them and filled the dish with toscana sauce (powdered form, mixed with cream)

Baked for 25 minutes and served with fries. Super tasty.

Nope, this dish isn't supposed to contain pasta. And that's because Mozzarella cheese available in Pakistan is a ridiculous joke. I went to Pak in July and the mozzarella cheese that I found in local bakeries looked like a cube of butter. Actual Mozarella cheese is milk white in color and is contained in some kind of preservation liquid, which is drained before using the cheese.

This is what mozzarella cheese looked like, that I used.

Google farmers cheese they supply in lahore. Fresh mozarella.

Dont buy local super market cheese its crap. More like desi ghee

Buy imported mozzarella.

Adams buffalo cheese is amongst better ones here.

The liquid mozarella is only available with farmers cheese

Try bigger stores like Hyperstar etc. They typically have imported cheese, which I hope is as good as it's available abroad. The prices are steep, so expect to pay a bit more than you might like to.

Before marriage, I have been living alone and was regularly cooking. I was very good at daal maash, bhindi, shaljam and fry gosht.

I have not been cooking after marriage but making only tea very rarely in absence of my wife.

Recently, I cooked qourma type thing but got no appreciation at home. I put it on the Facebook and result was almost same. Everybody said its too oily. Still it was tasty enough.

My wife is a good cook so therefore I don't feel any need to exhibit my potential anymore. [emoji14]
