DCs Great Expectations: The JLA Movie

How one crucial movie will determine the future of DC comics tinsel town story.

The first comic I bought was Justice League International issue #65 July 1994 (for Rs.10!), and have since then been a JLA fan in particular and a DC fanatic in general. Over the years I’ve witnessed stories ranging from the most stupid (villain attacks funeral only to be taken down by dirt), controversial (gay relationships when it wasn’t dealt with in mainstream comics) to some of the most amazing storylines in comic book history period (Tower of Babel, Fallen Angels storyline, Mageddon Warhead). This franchise has risen from several incarnations and subgroups over the decades such as JL Taskforce, JL Europe, JL International to the current JLA and has had a roster of several hundred characters once you count in the golden and silver age members (5 variations of the Flash ftw!).
You all know the score with Marvel movies right? They came they saw and they made the Avengers movie which seemed like a coup-de-grace after hits like Ironman, but instead turns out to be the cornerstone of Marvels planned DOMINATION of comic book adopted movies in Hollywood made from this point til the end of time.
What does DC do all this time? Why they are churning out more and more good stories for the average nerd next door who’s busy living off his parents money and buying comics and chugging nachos+redbull combos. What about all that potential cinema going demographic you may ask? Why that’s been taken care of by a certain Christopher Nolan and his Bat fetish…he’s made not only the greatest comic book movie ever but one of the greatest movie ever by creating The Dark Knight, so don’t you worry your little head its all fine and dandy.
Except in about ten years when Marvel Studios is making a grand finale TRILOGY of the Avengers, which is probably gonna have some real A-list Hollywood stars attached to it by then, no ones gonna remember Nolan as a DC Comic book Movie creator, neither his films as one, why?? Coz his legacy was sullied by the cheap reboot that came in 2013 starring Josh Duhamel/Adrian Brody/Gary Busey as Bruce Wayne.
That’s the reason why my inner fanboy lies awake at night planning the Ultimate JLA movie ever that could beat Avengers and shove that broken Ironman repulsor glove right up their…

1) Image Counts.

I’ll be honest guys; This is what I’m expecting we’ll get in form of JLA Movie:

Spandex adds ten pounds I swear!

Why? Google “wonderwoman pilot 2012” and you’ll understand.

What we need is this:

Notice the difference? The above is a snapshot of perhaps the most epic times in Justice League history; when it was blessed with someone who was both a seminal artist as well as a terrific writer. Mr. Ross co-wrote the Kingdom Come storyline, which pits Batman and Superman on a deliciously plotted collision course among a well written moral grey area. It was something comic industry had never seen before, brilliant story and artwork together, not like this.

Look at the Ross version; it can easily be mistaken for a real life photo of an unknown cast audition photo (or atleast drawn from one!).

This is what Justice League movie needs, Realism. Where Marvel showed its heroes can fight together and defeat near omniscient evil from another dimension wearing rainbow colored underwear, DC needs to just tell a good story…its steller cast will do the rest!

2) Reverse Engineering:

Consider; before 2007 announcement of Ironman, how many people outside comicdom knew of Tony Stark? If you said Thor you’d get a standard definition about the Norse diety tho not associated with something called Marvel Comics and certainly not Ironman! Or how about Captain America? How many people realized he was a leader of something called the Avengers? Maybe couple thousand? Now everyone who’s not living under a rock knows all these heroes and loves them. Marvel had to spend millions on advertising not to mention the hefty big budgeted movies, almost fail along the way (remember Ang Lee’s Hulk anyone? Lol) and wait 5 years before the world was ready to accept someone shooting arrows can bring down a thousand ton spaceship and hitting paydirt.

That’s where DC has the advantage… Everyone’s familiar with the two most Iconic characters in DC universe – Batman and Superman. There’s no need to make lengthy introduction stories as these guys have been around for decades… Its lock and load comrade! What DC needs to do is make a solid Three Hour movie that gets the ball rolling for its main roster, and then continue making smaller character based movies down the line. It’s the exact opposite of Avengers. It’s exactly what you do in TV show Pilots!

Although they might wanna dial back the mystery a lil bit

3) Epic Heroes: Cold War

Quick, how many of you creamed when you saw the Avengers trailer showing Thor, Cap and Hulk facing off against one another? its essential for heroes to fight someone other than the bad guys coz a) its good eye candy and you get to cheer like crazy b) it’s a nice way to pass time leading to the final showdown vs disposable hunks of alien machinery.
For JLA, we don’t need the whole team fighting off and spending one hour establishing the fact that yes Hulk does have the biggest gamma radiated wiener of em all, we just need this:

http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/batman-vs-superman2.jpg

Pictured above: definition of “Epic”

Yes ladies and gentlemen, we don’t need five films to portray a fight between the Kryptonian and the Bat, we just need to dig in! can you imagine if the trailer just teased of a potential conflict between Supes and Bats? Fans would go crazy speculating if it’d be an all out brawl (Alien vs Human) or more of an epic verbal sparing ala De Niro and Pacino’s legendary coffee table exchange in Heat?
And we’re not even talking about the main Villain Mr. Badguy yet!

4) Epic Villains: Yes, Mr. President.

See, sometimes art imitates life imitating art. Case in point; Lex Luthor a.k.a President of the United States in DC comics continuity.

Wonder if his linage links to someone in Ireland?

What we got here is a plain simple human being born and raised on this earth, having no super power, BALD, one of the worst guys in DC history becoming the President and making life all sorts of miserable for our beloved spadex wearers… much like our Government no? or if that’s too mundane for you, try Darkseid:

That’s the whole JLA Movie right there!

5) Details baby, details!

Which brings me to the most important aspect of all- finding a competent Director. To helm an ensemble cast is no mean feat, and as witnessed by Hollywood large-cast-of-A-list-junk like New Years Eve, its tick difficult to find someone competent enough for this juggling act. I don’t know if they prayed to Cthulhu or some other dark entity that landed them someone like Christopher Nolan, but they better start puckering their lips again for collective butt kissing of A-list directors like Scott brothers, Vince Vaughn or Wachowskis or Paul Veerhoven or gasp! even David Cameron himself (a thousand nerds just died imagining that!).
The crucial factor is not making eye candy or explosions or closeup shots of Black Canary’s fishnets… its not even just about creating a blockbuster summer movie; its ultimately going to be about DIFFERENTIATING between a JLA movie and Avengers. Remember tinsel town execs are pushing for a 2014-15 date, a date around which we will have definitive news about the release of the next Avengers movie. It should be about why people should spend to watch just another group in slightly different colored spandex fight bad guys?

Current rumor is that both Ben Affleck and Wachowski 'siblings' are is being considered for Directors chair, but seeing the way the post is been changing past couple of years, its uncertain who will finally be the one to yell action at the Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman 3way scene outtake!

End Word.

Honestly, right now I’m seeing a lotta parallels between DC/Marvel and any Pakistan-Australia match. While one player is firmly entrenched and continuing its march towards obvious victory, other is still experimenting with new players and heroes and whatnot…signs of a house divided to be sure. Its do or die for DC no doubt, and Marvel has successfully diversified its business into Hollywood. Can you imagine the revenue streams coming from its franchises as compared to those from its comic book sales? And already ‘written material’ consumption is on the decline, with most media available online including interactive comics etc.

DC should take heed from Nolan’s Batman universe where everything is grounded in reality. And by that I don’t mean the ‘practical’ Bat-Tumbler, but the real reactions to a superheroe’s deeds that carries forward instead of just dying before the credits roll, where evil, evil villains don’t plan on destroying the whole planet, but rather just two Ferry boats and even than one of ems filled with convicts, and most important of all, where theres just a smidgen of a chance that at the end of the day, heroes you have been rooting for might not live to see the next day.

I always found Justice league way better than avengers , even in animated movies and comics , apart from marvel civil war series which pawned every other awesome comics . The problem with DC/WB cause WB owns DC is they never took marvel as competitor , cause the money of marvel was going to paramount , sony and other studios , all the panic thing started when Disney bought marvel all the movies stuff rights revenue going direct to Disney and some other movies rights expiring mean Disney getting back rights of almost all the movies , Sony hit panic they rebooted spiderman so that rights remain .
WB knew there is gonna be Avengers but when its gonna be they didnt knew they thought they marvel might struggle to make one and will drag it around 2015 etc , while DC themselves failed to start Superman movie early , cause Nolan dont take two projects same time he do 1 by 1 . Since WB franchise of Batman is over now and Harry potter over to plus the huge success of avengers has panicked them to start JLA sooner than latter .

Why JLA will be a disaster , even if nolan takes on seat of producer JLA will be disaster , cause apart from batman and superman they are not creating any movie on Flash , wonder woman, Green Arrow , while Green Lantern it self was a disappointment . Plus like marvel they didnt tied those actors for JLA movie , and they gonna bring new actors to be batman , superman , etc in JLA movie plus no connection kinda , many people will wander whats the story is all about . While there are rumors of Wonder woman cameo in upcoming superman movie , but still i believe WB should have connected those characters and tied A list actors of there movies to contract of JLA

Call me a fan boy but the only reason I like DC is cause of Batman. Now as cob by said DC did not work on characterizing the jla so people won't know when they watch it. They could do a superman and Batman movie but jla will suck huge time. First off they need good actors. Look at the portrayal of tony stark by drowney. Jla always had better comic story line than the avengers but bringing then live so soon will only damage the image. Superman movie and Batman is done, green lantern sucked but it got the job done, all they need is a good wonder woman, flash and man hunter movie. The avengers brought Loki as villain where as darkseid and luthor can cause 10 times more havoc then him. Its all about the plot execution and right now a jla movie is not a good bet because avengers will just blow it away and damage its image

XxRebellionxX , cobby;guys u totally missed my point: It doesnt matter wat sorta good/bad movie WB/DC gave before... this is the start of something new albeit good or bad.

You have to realize the effort its taken Marvel starting from Ironman in 2007 to Avengers 2012, is just not possible under normal circumstances,,, especially if your'e talking abt someplace like Hollywood where people get rich or get screwed in a matter of seconds. Its the wholehearted effort of one very determined old jew: Mr. Stan 'The Man' Lee! and as much as I hate to admit it, him along with his right hand man and best friend Avi Arad (you;ll notice his name in quite a few press releases etc relating to the movies). thats why Stan Lee has cameos in almost all Marvel movies... to show the world he cares abt his babies! When was the last time we saw someone represent 'Face of DC comics'? Sad.

Theres new hope in the form of DCs relaunching all their main titles in "DC 52"... if that gets translated into Cinema world, past be damned, and DC comics brings in some good writers/artists who command influence in comic-dom AND hollywood like Paul Dini only then theres a chance of seeing a good JL movie.

U see stanlee cause he created those characters and is alive , bob kane and billy finger both are dead , so who shuld dc bring in movies for cameo which no one cares , and DC was owned by WB way long before disney got marvel , its all about hard work which WB never did with DC , while marvel kept on having private finance for there movies by selling rights to studios n then Disney pop up . So its all WB fault for not creating DC a good franchise , apart from batman tim burton and Nolan one and Old supermn DC/WB has failed most of the time with its movies on comics , look at new superman that came , green lantern , Johana F Hex .
Marvel started there comic book movie with howard the duck which got flopped but they kept on fighting , its like WB is more scared for bringing movies cause its there money on the movies while marvel had studios money on there movies , now its stable and Disney is just enjoying the hard work of avi Arad and Lee work of bringing things to franchise
