      Is this normal?.

I have a partition of 315gB. Formatted it fully using NTFS system.

I have my doubts about the free space. It sows 314gB free and 500m used.

Any formula to calculate how much space is taken by NTFS formatting?.

Well if this is not your Primary Windows drive, even then its possible for some of windows "permanent & unremovable files" to be allocated there.
And they really cannot be removed just like that.

They only way that you may remove it is:

      - When you're first installing Windows in a specific drive e.g. C: Drive, keep any other drive unformatted.
      - Only after installing windows in the C: drive, then you can quick format the rest of the drives and see how much space they're using.

Like this, windows can only get to install all the files in the C: drive.
