Okay. For a 3d tv, your options are pretty much straightforward.

The realistic choice breaks down to a 3d LED and a 3d Plasma.

I recommended a massive 3d Plasma over a 3d LED, but not buying a similar sized plasma to save money.

First thing's first, know what the budget is. Your average and maximum boundaries should be straight forward.

Coming back to the point about size etc, if he's in the mood of enjoying the 3d tv, I'd say get ATLEAST 46" on the bare minimum. 46+ recommened. I have a 46" 3d TV (Samsung Series D6xxx released late 2011 in Pak) and, frankly speaking, I believe I should've bought a 55 incher later on after saving more. My cousin has the 55" 3d LED of the same series, and it's a freaking treat to watch movies in 3d on that.

That said, your options are vast at the moment. I'm waiting for your budget limits to be stated so that I can come down to specific models. I'd recommend a 46" LED to you at the moment, and if you can sacrifice a bit on the sexyness, and the colours and quality, a 52"/55" 3D Plasma.

As for the glasses, it depends on the 3d TV and it's model. The latest TV setups by Samsung which has 2 glasses bundled with it are 3d Stereoscopic glasses with bluetooth based pairing, unlike the series before which had infrared based pairing. The bluetooth pairing is better, in terms of lesser to no crosstalk and gives a great experience over the infrared ones, for me atleast. The only drawback is the very high price at the moment.

Mention your budget and I'll give a more 'full' response with particulars. My answers, however, will be biased towards Samsung, so keep that in mind. I don't have much experience with Sony as the price was sky-rocketting high in comparison when I was searching the mkt for mine. LG came to the market after I had bought mine.

Oh, and there's a 3d tv thread created by 'The Avenger' in the Movies/TV Shows section (I think). It does exist though. Search for it. Browse through the thread. You'll find your answers if you focus enough of it and make the best use out of Google. Good luck!

3D plasma technology came out years back and TV's using this technology came out to be a complete failure. Why?
Here's the thing, the first day you buy a Plasma TV, it would display better than it would after a month. Plasma TV's are known for its pixels to die-off and hence lowering the image quality over time. I really wouldn't recommend Plasma TV's at all.

LED TV's are much more expensive than LCD ones. Most people would fleece you off. I'am not sure about the exact model, but Sony is officially the best company to buy TV's in (from my personal experience). Samsung has definitely come along with more features, a more attractive glossy finish to their screen's and they've even included touch buttons for the ease of access to option's etc.

Where most Sony's don't give all these features, in the end, I'd always rely on the picture quality of an LCD and Sony in this case has always been the best in doing that hands down.
