Power supply thread
From A long time I was thinking of creating a power supply thread in which members can discuss their power supply queries, graphics card power requirements and total system power supply estimate .I will also update the thread with the availability of new hardware. If you are confused in selecting the right power supply for you just tell your pc specs here or just send me a pm and I will suggest you a good power supply according to your budget.
I m starting from graphics card general power requirements so:
THE GRAPHICS CARD POWER REQUIREMENTS
Keep one thing in mind that the entire list is based on PCI-EX graphics cards
I search on many website for the power requirements of the graphics cards and so far this list is accurate and correct and I gave the whole list in simple text format so you can easily check it out even with a slow internet connection and itís also easy for me to update this type of chart
in the above list I search for all the cards and give a general graph of their power requirements and how much amperes they consume as graphics card use the +12v rail
Now I m moving towards the processors and their power requirements and I m only write on Intel CPU because mostly peoples in Pakistan use Intel
POWER REQUIREMENTS FOR PROCESSORS
Old processor used the 5v rails of the power supply but as power demands increased, the high currents required to supply sufficient power became problematic. With the introduction of the Pentium 4 microprocessor, Intel changed the processor power supply to operate on +12 V and added a separate connector ATX12V to new power supply same thing is used in graphics card so for both things we have to check the +!2v rails on the power supply
You can see that all the dual core and core2duoís are using same amount of power but latest processors use power then these processors and while checking the requirements of a pc power you have to check the power consumption of processor and graphics card and leave the other components because they donít use much power
The power requirements of all the other components can be determine as:
ē A power supply its self consume a power of 5 Ė 15watts
ē A cooler consume as low as 1watt power (excluding fan)
ē A motherboard consume 8 Ė 20 watt of power
ē A hard disk consume a power of 4 Ė 8 watts
ē A ram consume 6watt of power
ē A case fan can consume 1-10 watt
so you can see that all the other components of pc does not need much power the total power consumption of these items will not more then 50watt means they only consume a power of 4-5a most of the components use +3v rails and 5v rails but as the +12v rails is major and most important voltage of the power supply so we always check +12v rating on the power supply before buying.
FOR GRAPHICS CARDíS WITHOUT EXTERNAL POWER CONNECTOR:
In simple words some graphics cards donít have external power connector they consume less then 65watt power
So If you have a graphics card which does not have a external power connector and you are using a normal dual core pc then donít worry about any thing and install the graphic card in the system because at least all power supplies have minimum 10a on 12v rails and they can run a graphics card which needs 50-60watt or 5-6a some low ends and mid end gaming cards donít have external power connector such that 5670 and 4670 these cards consume low power then 65watt and they can easily run on any bulk power supply
Over clocker always worry about their power supply requirements and their consumption so if you are over clocker then on a save hand it is better to get a branded power supplies because non-branded power supplies donít have good efficiency and they does not give better results and if your pc needs 20a then it is better for you to get a power supply which have more then 25a so you can easily over clock processor without any problem
And now I think its time to move on into the power supplies discussion so in Pakistan we have 5 different brands of power supplies available, these are; CORSAIR, XIGMATEK, SILVER STONE, COOLER MASTER and ANTEC.
After a long work I collect the different power supplies specs, there voltage ratings and output power and many more about these power supplies and gave you general type of chart on power supplies and also mentioned power supplies with there supported graphics cards so we are starting from the corsair :-
Now I gave you a general chart on the power supplies specs their supported cards
And the entire list is based upon more then enough principle and I overestimated all the cards specs and while buying a power supply it is better to choose a power supply that have more then enough power to run the cards and this list is totally base on this
For example a corsair 400watt can run gtx285 in some cases but I didnít write it because if you over clock the processor or installing a hardware that consume extra power then its better for you to Get a good power supply for this
NOTE: NOW as we have so many new power supplies from different companies like corsair, antec, xigmatek, cooler master, thermal take, XFX, Silverstone, and many others and it is now too much difficult for me to get the full specification of every power supply and mention its supported cards here because this industry is expanding day by day so from now on I will only mention the power consumptions of different products like processor and graphics card and you have to do the other work yourself. Always check the +12v rating before purchase the power supply as I mention above. Or ask for it in this thread or make a new thread but always mention the Number of Amperes on +12v rails in order to get the required information from us.
