      Firmware update issue

i have just gotten a 160gb ps3 ( Ntsc-J ) on monday 6-27-2011, and the shopkeeper updated it to 3.55 however when i went home it says i need to update it to 3.66 ( i really want to play online ), but it said that if my ps3 shut downs during the installation process of the update, i may not be able to turn it on again ( that is really scary ) so i was wondering if my ps3 shuts down ( loadshedding ) during installing the update, does that mean that the entire ps3 will never work again ),

and for downloading the update manually i have a ntsc-J ps3, so should i download the us version of the 3.66 firmware update?

and please answer my 1st query it is very troubling =|

Firstly, firmware updates for PS3 are universal, so even if you download the update from the US PlayStation site and install it on your NTSC-J PS3, it will work fine !

Secondly, I'm not sure about this, but about a year or so ago from now Sony released a firmware update which included a recovery image which would get installed on your PS3 .. Its like a 'Safe Mode' for the PS3 and it's used when the OS on the PS3 is screwed up .. You can install an update from there, reset the databases, accounts, etc ... I think if your PS3 shuts down during a firmware update then you might still be able to boot into this recovery image and try to install the update again from there .. But I'm not sure about this as I've never had to face this problem ..

What I do is to avoid the risk of my PS3 shutting down during an update due to load shedding, etc, I first switch the power in my house to my generator, so that WAPDA can't screw my PS3, install the update, and then switch back to WAPDA ..

And its okay for the PS3 to just suddenly shut down during normal operation (e.g. playing games, etc ..) .. You'll just get a message the next time you start your PS3 to shut down using the shut down option, etc ..
