      Halo 3 split screen issue

guys I hooked up my xbox 360 to my hdtv today and ran halo 3 split screen to test it out. The problem is when you go split screen two black bars appear on both sides of the screen (as in 4:3 letterbox aspect ratio). Single player campaign, the menus, dashboard are all widescreen. Is it supposed to be like that or is there a setting I'm missing out on?
