single channel memory

i wanted to know what is the difference between single channel memory and dual channel memory???i recently got XFX 630i after some research i found that it operates in single channel memory......before that i had 945GCCR but i never really understood the difference???

and this the right thing to ask here or in other section??

from what Ive heard, dual channel doesnt give any significant performance gains. but the apparently, it doubles the bandwidth of memory which should double the performance as well.

can i put different bus speed of rams in single channel architecture??i did it in dual channel and it workd fine
