First of all, wrong section. This thread should be in Software Section.
As for Win8 ... its a PreBeta Release. Its not meant for ordinary users like you and me. Better to stay away from it because i KNOW you wont be able to cope with the problems it'll create for you.
If your PC specs are good enough, install the Windows 7 Ultimate.
As for Your Data ... well you can Install Windows on your C: drive without losing any data on other drives, because only C: drive will have to formatted during another OS installation. Other drive partitions remain intact as long as you dont play around with 'em.
If you like to keep your Windows XP (i will advise against it though, because its time to move on) ... Another option would be to create a DUAL BOOT with XP and Win7. (Forget Win8, wait for a final release) ... which will require you to install the Win7 on a DIFFERENT partition of your drive. And that partition should be clear of your other data.
NOTE: Make sure you backup your SaveGames before installing another windows because you'd be likely to format your C: drive and Save Games are always in C: drive.
Also Forgot,I have WIN XP SP2
