Boardwalk Empire is an upcoming American television series from premium cable network HBO, set in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Prohibition era. Starring Steve Buscemi, the show is adapted from Nelson Johnson's book, Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City by Emmy award-winning screenwriter and producer Terence Winter of The Sopranos.


The pilot episode was directed by Martin Scorsese and he is expected to continue to be creatively involved in the ongoing production. On September 1, 2009, HBO picked up the series for an additional 11 episodes. The series is scheduled to debut on September 19, 2010.
Filming was done on a specially created set in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

A period gangster drama is exactly what was needed to fill that void left by the Sopranos when it finished. Let's face it there hasn't been a great dramatic TV show ever since The Sopranos and Six Feet Under came to an end. This show has the potential to try and be in that league, here's hoping it succeeds at it.

oh man are you sure there hasn't been anything better than the sopranos ever since?? have you seen the "THE WIRE" ... that is maybe the best crime drama ever on tv... yes... well that is a cop drama so a little different... but still ... that is the highest rated tv series on imdb of all times... and it is one amazing series... lolz... kiera knightely loved it so i started watching it and man wire is atleast the best cop series of all times.. seeing that this upcoming series is a gangster series... i will have to watch... but i want scorsese to end his obsession with gangsters... especially italians... it ain't cool no more dude... especially when he got all out of ideas and went for the remake of internal affairs and claimed all the glory he did not deserve... i ain't his fan no more... damn ******...

yes it is his playground... but it is getting old... too old... he hasn't shown any variety... always the gangster stuff... he never takes a break from crime... he is a great director no doubt... but i just feel that his time is past... or he needs to change shit up... get into something new... and that 1920's crap is just too much over done now... oh no tv series... he thought maybe he can go back to his fav. jack off point in history and try to make something which others will mistake as a masterpiece... i am tired with his crap... no love for him after departed... italian gagsters make me puke now... let it be... that shit was from the last century... it is the end of his career... he isn't even good enough to make any black gangsters crap cuz he is stuck on the EYEtalians...

FYI from between Casino (1996) and The Departed (2006), Scorsese made no gangster movies. In that that time he made

-Kundun - about the Dalai Lama, yeah Scorsese made a movie about the Dalai Lama
-Bringing out the Dead
-Gangs of New York - To this day my favorite Scorsese movie. Unlike anything he'd done before, epic scale
-The Aviator - The story of Howard Hughes' genius and madness
He also made two superb music documentaries, one about Bob Dylan (No direction home) and one about the Rolling Stones(Shine a Light)

Every one of his movies sets itself apart from the rest, the subject material is just so diverse. He only made ONE other gangster movie and that was Goodfellas. Goodfellas was nothing like Casino as Casino was nothing like The Departed. There are a lot of people that deserve to be labeled generic but you're totally off here. Now please stop deriding arguably the best director in the biz right now just because you didn't like one of his movies.

Reviews are in and surprise, surprise they're all positive. A very healthy score of 90 over at metacritic. Series premieres tomorrow (if anyone cares )
