well i have read what most of the guys are saying over here, and most of it is pretty much true.
- girls get an edge around here, particularly good looking girls; not only in the selection/ interview process but also in during the job work etc etc. u know what i mean.
- ur grades dont matter, only to the extent like you need to have 70% marks or a 2.5 gpa to sit in ABC company recruitment test.
but what i have experienced during my professional life is
- references matter!!!! whenever there is a vacancy in a company, the boss will ask his colleagues or subordinates to tell him of some good guy they know. Alot of companies here hire via internal references. so much so, sometimes even the HR emails the employees to refer CVs for XYZ position.
- However much u decorate ur CV, we wont read it
that's it. you will be asked a few questions about the job role that is required from you, a few other questions and if the answers are satisfactory you're good to go
Agreed i'm in recruitment and nothing pisses me off more than excessive garbage on CVs or highly decorated CVs.
At the same time, i've come across CVs with utter bullshit in them, went to so and so school that is ranked no.3 or whatever. or people don't put dates of graduation or job durations.
I dont even bother calling such people.
To be fair interviewing is an art, we have a recruitment team of 6 people and we all work individually, the strange bit is that none of us ever check the same things or value the same things the same way. It usually takes me 15 minutes at most to assess a potential candidate, then again i've always been exceptional at people skills and hence why i chose HR as a profession and not to mention actually having best practices drilled in my skull in multiple seminars and workshop during my Msc.
i give candidates different advice that is dependent on the company they go to. If the hiring person likes dynamic fresh thinkers i try to make sure they highlight that. If the hiring person is a power tripping ego maniac i tell them to be submissive and listen and agree to everything he says.
One of the most retarded questions ive ever been asked in an interview was " If you were an object what object would you be ?". I was amused and insulted at the same time. The reason most interviewers ask this question is to test how good people are thinking on their feet. Your answer doesnt matter because the next question is going to be why would you want to be that object. That is the real test. I answered the woman "Umm, it doesn't matter what i want to be, what you're looking for is how i'll justify my answer here, you're testing my ability to think under pressure and in a dynamic method." She was like ummm yeah, no it's part of the process blah blah. Her co-interviewers started laughing and they offered me the job. She to this day still does not like me.
I would never recommend asking questions like that, because it's insulting to intelligent people. An interview is supposed to be about getting to know the person and figuring him out. It's not meant to be a gauntlet. If you make him comfortable he or she will tell you about themselves without any question and they'll let their guard down. Seating arrangements matter, your opening statements matter, your attitude matter, body language matters. Truth is that interviewing a candidate is harder than being interviewed but considering the power rests with the recruitment staff, they get away with their bullshit.
Recruitment is a two way process, a candidate is also judging the company in his interview. A high profile person (talent) will always have other companies pursuing him and may make up their mind that they dont want to work with a company with such idiots. The war for talent is one of the biggest concerns of HR but very few people do anything to ensure they keep talent.
P.S. if anyone needs a job or a career switch or just basic help with interviews. drop a pm, i'll be more than happy to accommodate you.
