Microsoft: Alan Wake Missed Sales Expectations, Next Remedy Game Has No Publisher Yet

In a recent interview with Joystiq, Microsoft made some interesting statements about Remedy's next game.

Microsoft Studios hasn't signed next Alan Wake project, would 'love to work with Remedy again'
by Christopher Grant on Jun 10th 2011 1:00AM

Oskari Häkkinen, head of franchise development for Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment, told Joystiq last month that, in fact, a new Alan Wake project was under development. Admittedly, we were getting a little ahead of ourselves when we arrived at E3 this year in full Alan Wake cosplay so the absence of the latest A. Wake project – rumored to be an XBLA title called Alan Wake's Night Springs – hit us pretty hard.

So we tracked down Microsoft Studios chief Phil Spencer to grill him about Remedy's reveal and the dearth of Alan Wake games in Microsoft's E3 lineup. "I read that," Spencer said, laughing about the news. "I don't know that they've signed it with anybody." While Spencer told us that Wake "didn't sell as well as we would have liked," he was clear that it wouldn't affect their working relationship. "I'd love to work with Remedy again," he told us. "We have ongoing conversations with them."

So if Microsoft isn't privy to what Remedy's working on, who is? "I think the stuff they're doing now they wanted to incubate, Mattias and the team," Spencer said. "They wanted to incubate internally. Like I said, I don't think they've signed it with anybody."

^ But why would someone pick Alan Wake 2? The original was a commercial disaster. Maybe they should work on something new and release it by 2012 or 2013.

Not every new IP is bound to be a hit. The game undoubtedly has potential to become a lot more than it is right now. Abandoning it would be such a waste.

Sad. Really sad indeed. I was so looking forward to Alan Wake 2. Now this is really sad. Here's to hoping some publisher like EA takes the IP and makes it multiplat and releases it.

The game was a 'disaster' as it had to be 'dumbed' down for console adaptation. Remember this was to be the highlight title for vista and DX10.1. That never came to fruition as M$ got greedy (or something to this effect).

If you read what Remedy had said about the game, it had to be cut down so that it would run on the x360. The game that you see is not Remedy had created, but what M$ had demanded!

Is it any difficult for MS to publish the next game? No. But since they didn't get as much $$$ as they wanted from the last game, they think it's better to p*ss off the hardcore gamers and fans instead of taking such a risk again. It's evident from their last conference how much they care and they will stick with Kinect stuff because it pays off no matter if you like it or not.

Sony's exclusives for PS3 never sold well except for the last few yet they are still keeping up with the sequels along with PS Move games. Not taking sides here but that's the way it is.

You be 'W'asted. You be 'J'ayed. Best of both the worlds!
