      iPad help - ( iOS n00b here )

      AOA

I recently got myself an iPad1 WiFi only version. I could have had gotten an iPad 2 but i got a good deal on this one and decided to test the water before plunging in.

The first thing that i noticed was the fact that its on 4.2.1 which to me seems rather old considering 5.0.1 is out i believe which brings in a lot of goodies. I being an Android user am used to rooting and custom ROMs now so being on the latest OS version is second nature to me. Should i update to iOS 5.x.x?

I believe the problem would come with an unteethered jailbreak (BTW, what the bloody hell it that anyway?) for which a solution is due soon according to this developer who has come up with an unteethered JB. However, i was thinking that suppose i download a ton of apps before updating, i wouldnt really need the JB for a while, right?

Coming to apps, while mine has tons of them in it already, i would still like to know if im missing out on something. So kindly share 10/15 apps/games that you guys believe are a must have for the iPad. Also from where am i supposed to be getting them? Cydia i believe?

As far as updates are concerned, i can update the OS through iTunes. Now once thats done, lets suppose i go up to iOS 5 or something like 4.3.3 maybe, how exactly am i supposed to JB this thing? I would appreciate a guide or a link. I know about things such as Cydia and Redsnow and all, but only the very basic stuff.

Also, i wonder if there is some way to backup the apps installed in it? Something like Titanium on Android so that i can selectively restore apps.

I would also like to know if i can change the name of my iPad. You know, the tag that comes up when i connect it to iTunes. I dont really want to format it until i can restore the many apps that are installed on it.

Lastly, im wondering if getting a Bluetooth keyboard or a USB powered one is a good idea? I would then be using it as an Ultrabook of sorts (albeit a heavily underpowered one) for taking notes in classes instead of playing games on it during lectures. Which also leads me to the question, which accessories should i be using with it? I have ordered a skin for its scratch-prone back already. I also have a rather ugly-ish case for it, which i intend to change.

Any and all suggestions would be welcomed.

      Let me give you hint..

Tethered jailbreak means when you reboot or turn off your iPad, you will loose your jailbreak and then you have to jailbreak again ...

With UNtethered, you don't loose jailbreak after rebooting or powering off...

Update to 4.3.3... Nothing above it and jailbreak it by visiting www.jailbreakme.com in Safari browser on your iPad... That's the simplest method... Ios 5 jailbreak when releases then download and upgrade to it... Not now

for learning to download and jailbreak official 4.3.3 go to
      www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=15889
      Very easy and comprehensive tutorial..

Since you have only iPad1, download
      4.3.3 (iPad 1): iPad1,1_4.3.3_8J3_Restore.ipsw

      there is no backup application

      Visit http://iphonecake.com/appcake/en/
to download cracked appz and games...

Umm, JJDoctor pretty much answered everything but here are two other ways to get games on your iPad.

      1. Download installous through Cydia and download them directly on your iPad.
      2. Download them by going to apptrackr.org and sync them with iTunes or any other program like ifunbox (I recommend iTunes for syncing games cause ifunbox crashes many times while transferring)

P.S Check out toucharcade.com for new games for your iPad. It has a lot of reviews etc.

Thank you. Reading up on JJD's links. Will visit your link after that, Cydia and Installous are installed already.

Alright, so after a rather hectic week, i tried to update the FW on the iPad.

      I followed the steps in the iClarified guide. I downloaded the FW and tried to update it. iTunes unzipped the file, however it gave the following error;

The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194)

So i did a Google search and came across this webpage:

      http://www.ipadforums.net/jailbreaki...or-3194-a.html

I followed the guide and downloaded TU. First thing that i noticed was that all the 5 boxes were checked, so i unchecked the 2nd and 4th one. The next thing i noticed was that there isnt any Apply Changes button on my TU. The third thing i noticed was that the TU in the guide is v4.33 while mine is v5.10.
Anyways, i unchecked the two boxes, and closed TU. Tried the update, it gave the same error. So i restarted both the iPad and the laptop however iTunes still gives the same error. I checked TU again and this time both the 2 boxes shown in the guide were unchecked on start.

No idea what to do now, need help again guys.

Umm no. I havent upgraded to iOS 5. Double and triple checked this. iPad still shows 4.2.1. iTunes shows same. Also give the option to upgrade to iOS 5 if i want to.

Simply said, im still on 4.2.1
