Demon's Souls Goes Offline in May for North American PS3 Owners

The North American version of Demon's Souls will go offline on May 31, publisher Atlus confirmed today, putting an end to the PlayStation 3 game's groundbreaking online multiplayer component. Demon's Souls players will have a chance to say goodbye to their fellow phantoms with two special events planned for the month of May.
According to a report from Game Informer, Atlus will hold two special World Tendency events in May, which fans can vote on.
Atlus cites the cost of supporting Demon's Souls online servers in its announcement about the closure.
"It has been a tremendous honor and privilege for all of our staff at ATLUS to have been involved with so innovative and groundbreaking an interactive entertainment experience," reads a portion of a statement from Atlus VP of sales and marketing Tim Pivnicny. "We poured our heart and soul into every facet of our involvement with Demon’s Souls, particularly the title’s memorable Deluxe Edition, which served as the only avenue through which to purchase the game’s official strategy guide. It was also of the utmost importance for us to sustain the game’s online experience as long as possible, even beyond the point at which sales could help to offset the expense. Regrettably, the online servers cannot be sustained forever and now the end draws near."
Demon's Souls was originally released in North America on October 6, 2009, giving us a little more than two and a half years in the world of Boletaria. The online action ends on May 31 at 11:59pm PST.
