Speaking to our colleagues at PC Gamer in its recently-published interview, Newell said one of Valve's failures over the years was to assume that Microsoft would improve Xbox Live so it could update its games regularly for free.

When asked if its mistake on Xbox Live was to assume Microsoft would let Valve update its games more often, Newell said:

"We thought that there would be something that would emerge, because we figured it was a sort of untenable... Oh yeah, we understand that these are the rules now, but it's such a train wreck that something will have to change.

"That's why we're really happy with the current situation with the PS3," he said. "We're solving it now in a way that is going to work for our customers, rather than assuming something is going to emerge later that will allow us to fix this."

Microsoft has a notoriously closed approach to its online service compared to PSN, with developers allowed as little as one free title update (though there are exceptions) and limitations on the amount of free game content they can release.

In fact, in its recent paid-for Red Dead Redemption add-on Rockstar included all the free-of-charge content from its previous Free Roam pack, "due to the platform network's restrictions on numbers of free packs we can give away."

Valve told CVG last month that it'd love to put its Steamworks dev suite on Xbox Live, but Microsoft seemingly isn't budging.

Valve's Erik Johnson echoed Newell's comments: "The lack of updates on the 360, for TF2, is also a total failure," he said. "Those are the ones that sting the worst because... it got all the way through to customers. It's like a bug. If you fix a bug before it ever ships, it's pretty cheap. If you ship it and then fix it, it's really expensive. Those ones are really bad."

In particular It's a huge turnaround for Newell, a man who once called PS3 "a waste of everybody's time" - something for which he later apologised for to owners of the console.

Heavy Rain director and Quantic Dream founder David Cage has hinted that his next project could be a multi-platform release.

Heavy Rain was, of course, a PlayStation 3 exclusive - but the game's success appears to have given Cage the belief that Quantic Dream's next title can capture a wider audience.

"With Heavy Rain it was right, but after Heavy Rain the question can be asked whether we should stick to one platform or open out to different platforms," he told GI.biz.

"Now that we're established why are we limiting ourselves to one share of the market when we can reach more? There are pros and cons and it's not an easy decision."

"We're not looking at anything, we have people asking, and we're seeing different options," he added.

"We're really thankful of Sony's support and the relationship we have because there are very few publishers that would have supported Heavy Rain the way they supported us."

Cage has already said that he is reluctant to do a direct Heavy Rain sequel but the next Quantic Dream title has already been written.

One thing we think is almost certain, however, is that Cage's next idea will retain the essence of Heavy Rain as a game, which, as Cliff Bleszinski has said, seems to have started its own genre.

In Halo: Reach, players experience the fateful moments that forged the Halo legend. It’s the story of Noble Team, a squad of heroic Spartan soldiers, and their final stand on the planet Reach, humanity’s last line of defense between the terrifying Covenant and Earth. This darker story is echoed by grittier visuals amid a backdrop of massive, awe-inspiring environments. Characters, enemies and environments are rendered in amazing detail by an all-new engine designed to deliver epic-scale encounters against the cunning and ruthless Covenant.
*important characters/things are highlighted in bold

A little bit of back story i wrote about the events and important characters in the story that only those who've read the novel are familiar with. I hope this helps you appreciate some of the moments in the game better than you would have otherwise.
_____________________

The planet Reach was the center of Human Research and development. It was also extremely well defended. An armada of frigates lined up and ready for battle at a moment’s notice. Multiple orbital defense stations all set up at key points with Heavy-duty MAC cannons – One round could push clean through a covanent Capital ship. If that wasn’t enough, there were tons more MAC cannons on ground around the entire planet.

The planet was the Fortress so to speak. Most of the population believed the defensive and offensive capabilities of the planet were more than enough to handle any covanent invasion fleet…or any invasion fleet they had yet encountered in the past.

The planet was also home to the Spartan – II program, which John (Mastercheif) had been a part of. He, along with around 70 other kids were kidnapped from their homes from various systems (galaxies) around the universe and were brought to Reach and put through training so brutal that was, in some ways, un-ethical.

They were all very young…as young as 6 years old, but they all had some specific physical and mental capabilities that were exceptional from normal human beings, making them eligible for the program and the un-imaginably painful physical augmentation where the candidates were given specific (illegal) medicines to genetically enhance their strength, speed and reflexes tenfold.

The founder of the program was a civilian doctor, Doctor Halsey. She wasn’t with the military, but due to her contribution to the program she worked close with them, inside the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) on Reach. She had been like a mother to the Spartans they never had. She had watched all of them grow up in front of her through the years into the lethal killing machines they were trained to. All of the Spartans deeply respected her and may be feared her seemingly cold personality; her stare could punch a hole straight through that half-ton armor and make them second guess themselves at times. Most of them didn’t really know how to react with her due to her non-military status – standard protocols of engagement obviously didn’t apply.

Another thing most of you might not know is the relation between Cortana and Dr. Halsey. Cortana was Halsey’s personal AI – literally. All the AI’s were based off or were copy of another human’s brain. They inherited the features of that person, their voice, emotions, personality and general way of communicating with someone. Now you know why the chief cared so much for Cortana; she was the closest thing to Dr. Halsey he had, and he had promised her safety to the Dr.

The time the game starts is only a few weeks prior to the start of Halo 1. The covanent show up on Reach undetected and before long, a full-scale invasion is underway. Hundreds of millions of people die during the ruthless confrontation and eventually the entire planet gets taken over and later, glassed. Only the UNSC frigate “Pillar of Autumn” captained by “Captain Jacob Keyes” manages to escape the battle with the Chief and Cortana on board.

As per "The Cole protocol" which dictates that if only escape is the only logical choice during a battle against the covanent, the said UNSC frigate should perform a slip-space jump using COMPLETELY random coordinates. The only condition being that those coordinates DO NOT point at the direction of Earth. Doing so, if the covanent even follow that frigate, they'll be following them into unknown space.

After the Pillar of Autmn escapes Reach and initiates The Cole Protocol to perform the slip-space jump, they arrive at an unknown artifact....Halo. Thats where Halo 1 starts.

It is a very emotional, intimate and extremely down-to-earth story as you and the rest of the Noble team desperately try to save the planet. Their attempts at sparking some hope through their heroics are ultimately useless, and the entire struggle they put in…everything goes to waste.

Or does it?
In a move that will be celebrated by those who enjoy Xbox Live's headset communication for their ability to scream expletives at their opponent in multiplayer FPS titles -- and possibly lamented by those opponents -- Xbox Live Studio's Jerry Johnston claimed in a session at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival that the company will be upgrading the quality of voice communication on the system.

As reported by Eurogamer, the company plans to "upgrade the codec and audio infrastructure" with the dashboard update that will come this fall with the launch of Kinect.

"The codec we used when we first launched was a low bit rate codec and we stuck with that," Johnson explained. "We launched and we said we required broadband. We required a 64k connection, which not many people think of as broadband any longer. But that was the minimum requirement to run the service at the time. It's time for us to move on. Especially if we want to think about broadening -- a crackly headset on the top of your head -- not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment."

Metal Gear Solid: Rising is Kojima Productions' first multi-platform title on which development is happening concurrently across PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. According to Shigenobu Matsuyama, the game's creative director, this is now becoming the norm amongst Japanese studios.

Asked by VideoGamer.com if it is important for Japanese studios to embrace the Xbox 360, Matsuyama said: "I think it's very important for the future of Japanese publishing. We see publishers - Capcom have started a little bit earlier than us - and I can say most of the Japanese studios have seen the importance of going multi-platform, and our studio as well.

"I think we're now really ready to go multi-platform at once, I mean development cycle wise. I think this will be a normal trend for Japanese studios in the future."

Matsuyama also commented on the importance of the PC as a gaming platform.
"What surprised me when I came to Germany were also the PC games," he said. "Living in Japan, PC games are not really mainstream, but seeing them here I thought that this PC area is also a place that we need to consider more seriously."

Metal Gear Solid: Rising doesn't currently have a release date, though the title is expected at some point in 2011. Catch the full interview with Shigenobu Matsuyama right here.

A video of the Halo Reach ending has been uploaded to YouTube. Uh oh.

A CVG reader has sent the link to us and we've checked it out. Bad times.

We won't give anything away - indeed, we haven't watched it in its entirety - but we've seen enough to know it's definitely the real ending. (Or at least one of the endings, perhaps).

Looks like someone somewhere deserves a very slow handclap.

CVG reported that Halo: Reach has been accessed by hackers on on Saturday. The group managed to circumvent a block on Xbox.com, which was supposed to provide code for the full game to reviewers only.
Microsoft is "aggressively" pursuing the perpetrators - but that hasn't stopped the code being leaked onto BitTorrent sites.

Here is some info regarding about the next Xbox console.

Xbox 720 or Xbox 3 draws a lot of speculation, so let's find out what we know so far regarding the hardware, graphics, release date, games and more.
We have tried to gather as much information as we can about the Xbox 3 or Xbox 720 and what it'll have in store for hardcore Xbox fans and maybe even the average gamer. The article is entirely based on rumors and speculation with some known facts included.
       		Xbox 720 | Xbox 3 - Graphics and Capabilities

The current generation of graphics for consoles has been about HD resolutions and most recently we've seen 3D gaming entering the foray. The Xbox 360 does offer full 1080p HD support also known as true HD for some games, but most of the current gen games for the system are actually running at 720p native resolution due to frame rate issues and the ageing hardware. It's also been confirmed that Crysis 2 will be coming in 3D on the Xbox 360 so that means Xbox 720 will definitely be supporting 3D gaming and it will most probably be without those pesky glasses.
So what can we expect to see on the Xbox 720 or Xbox 3, well, according to sources as quoted by VE3d "ATI-AMD will provide Microsoft with GPUs for its next generation", but it has not been confirmed. What about resolution? Will we be seeing Ultra HD(UHDV) which is touted to be the replacement for current HDTVs.
For those of you who don't know, Ultra HD uses 7,680 x 4,320 pixels in a widescreen aspect ratio of 16x9, making for a total of approximately 33 million pixels (33 megapixels).
At the moment Ultra HD is simply not a viable option, the uncompressed video and audio recorded in ultra HD takes up a whopping 3.5 terabytes for an 18 minute clip. The prototype ultra HD screen also consumes an insane amount of electricity.
There have also been rumors that the Xbox 720 or Xbox 3 will be improving the current line-up of Xbox 360 games by increasing frame rate, draw distance, graphics, textures, etc. according to Joystiq.
Xbox 720 | Xbox 3 - Hardware and Capabilities

Xbox 360's hardware has been blighted by the infamous RROD, even the most hardcore Xbox fans might agree that they would have liked a more reliable system and it is quite apparent that Microsoft will be be putting more emphasis on testing the system before releasing it this time around.
According to an interview with EGM in 2008, Robbie Batch, President of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft, said,
We started thinking about the next generation before we shipped the Xbox 360. It doesn't start with a date. It starts way upstream with silicon development. From that comes a series of data points. You start making early technology choices. It's an evolving thing. Stuff doesn't become concrete until you get inside a window of when you have to ship, more than 18 months or so out.

At the moment, we weren't able to find any rumors or speculation about the processor which is set to power the Xbox 720 or Xbox 3, so we can't say anything about that.
We have already mentioned in the Graphics section that it is rumored ATI-AMD will provide Microsoft with GPUs for its next generation system. It was also rumored that Intel was hoping Microsoft would be using their so-called revolutionary Larrabee chip, but the Larrabee project was cancelled in December 2009 so that possibility goes out of the window.
There is much debate whether the Xbox 720 will support Blu-ray disk format or will be digital based, well, according to an EEDAR analyst, Greg Short, the next generation of consoles are set to be digital based only due to a surge in small development studios, which rely on such distribution methods for their smaller, lower budget titles. We personally feel that this might not be the case as their is a lot of variations in the Internet speeds around the world and it will take some courage to provide no kind of disk support at all.
Unless Kinect ends up being a complete failure, Motion Control support is an obvious possibility with built-in Kinect support. As for hardcore gamers they would rather prefer staying away from the gimmicky motion controls and stick with the controller but would welcome Keyboard and Mouse support.
Xbox 720 | Xbox 3 - Release Date

Microsoft has repeatedly said that they believe in Xbox 360 having a much longer life-span compared to its predecessor. In an interview with Develop in late 2009, Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer said the company is focused on evolving the current Xbox 360 console, with additions such as Project Natal, and is not interested in pushing brand new hardware out the door anytime soon.
So we probably won't be getting our hands on the console in 2011 or even 2012, but with the rate at which PC graphics are surpassing the current gen consoles hopefully some info is revealed at E3 2012 or we'd be very disappointed.
Xbox 720 | Xbox 3 - Games

About the games, well, we haven't heard much but we found two rumored stories, one from 2008 and another recent one regarding Bungie's next IP. An Activision-published action series developed by Bungie is being "planned, engineered and designed" to potentially appear on Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 via CVG.
The other one concerns a first party sequel that was being developed for the 360, but is being moved to a next generation console as reported by Destructoid back in 2008.
Xbox 720 | Xbox 3 - Dashboard and UI

Microsoft has drastically evolved the dashboard of the Xbox 360 already in its 5 years of existence so it's expected that we'll be seeing a fresh interface. We haven't heard anything on this one, most probably it'll be even more social.
Kindly share any more rumored info that you might have heard or read concerning the next Xbox in the comments below.
